Manchester United are the most in-form side in the Premier League but their recent positive results have all come against teams from the bottom half of the table.

Their next test against Newcastle United will be a great marker to understand where Erik ten Hag’s team currently lie. The last time the two sides met this season was in the Carabao Cup where Eddie Howe’s team emerged 3-0 victors.

United had lost at St James’ Park last season and their preparations for the game was far from ideal as the team’s flight to Newcastle upon Tyne was cancelled at the last moment.

Shaw as LCB

As per Manchester World, the Dutch manager is contemplating making a tactical change ahead of tonight’s encounter with Luke Shaw set to start as centre-back.

Since his return from injury, the Englishman has played in the Everton and Galatasaray matches in his familiar left-back position.

Ten Hag has utilised this ploy in the past, especially in the absence of Lisandro Martinez, who suffered a season-ending injury last term.

The Argentine is currently sidelined and United have played Victor Lindelof in that position and while the Swede does possess fantastic vision, a left-footed defender naturally has more angles to pass to.

Ten Hag’s preference for a left-footed defender is also partly responsible for Raphael Varane‘s reduction in game time with Ten Hag reluctant to pair the both of them.

Ploy worked wonders last season

Shaw’s passing ability is certainly underrated and he can effectively help the side play out from the back against a rampant Magpies at home. This will mean either Diogo Dalot or Sergio Reguilon plays as the left-back.

“Erik ten Hag is considering deploying Luke Shaw at centre-back for Saturday’s trip to Newcastle United, ManchesterWorld understands.

“With Martinez injured, Shaw is United’s only real left-footed option in that role and could line up alongside Maguire at the heart of defence against Newcastle, with Sergio Reguilon starting at left full-back.”

Last season, Shaw was excellent at the heart of defence and United fans will hope that the tactical shift ends up working as United prepare for the busy festive period.

Manchester United rode their luck at times, especially in the first half but in the end, secured their most emphatic win of the season, overcoming Everton 3-0 at Goodison Park.

The plaudits will rightly go to Alejandro Garnacho for scoring a worthy winner of the goal of the season award while Kobbie Mainoo shone on his first-ever start in the Premier League.

It was also a fantastic result in terms of the defending as United kept their third clean sheet in a row and have now gone 312 minutes in the Premier League without conceding, the best current record in the league.

Maguire, Lindelof keep yet another clean sheet

Manager Erik ten Hag has been forced to tweak his defence often, due to the number on injuries but seems to have found a working partnership for now.

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof kept their second consecutive clean sheet and the pair were imperious against the Toffees in front of a charged-up Goodison atmosphere.

The much-maligned pair have been criticised in the past and they had to withstand a storm in the last 15 minutes of the first half but they stood tall and Andre Onana came in clutch at times to ensure yet another clean sheet.

The duo made eight clearances each, as they repelled countless long balls as the team from Merseyside tried to go direct. Both made an interception each as well.

In terms of duels, the duo combined to win eight aerial duels, with Everton utilising set-pieces and long balls to try and get Dominic Calvert-Lewin into the game.

They switched the play cleverly and got their side on the front foot with seven successful long balls and the performance was another reminder as to why Raphael Varane is sitting on the bench.

Ten Hag’s Varane stance vindicated so far

The Frenchman is not used to being so low in the pecking order and there are growing reports that the World Cup winner could be on his way out of the club in January.

Ten Hag has denied the rumours of a rift with the defender, whose poor injury record meant the United boss was forced to start Maguire in the first place.

The former skipper has hardly put a foot wrong and has combined to great effect with both the Swede and Jonny Evans, who is currently out injured.

The injury situation and the number of fixtures coming up means the former Real Madrid superstar will get his chances but he will admit that the duo ahead of him have done well in his absence.

Manchester United travelled to Goodison Park to take on an aggrieved Everton side who had just suffered a 10-point reduction brought against them by the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag had to be content with a place on the stands as he was serving a one-match touchline ban following a fourth booking of the season during the Luton Town game.

The Dutchman started Andre Onana in goal with a defensive four of Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw ahead of the goalkeeper.

Kobbie Mainoo started as United’s deepest-lying midfielder alongside Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes.

In Rasmus Hojlund’s absence, Anthony Martial led the line with Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho on either flank.

Here are three things we learned from Manchester United’s 3-0 win against Everton.

Outstanding performance from Mainoo

Ahead of the game, all eyes were on Mainoo after confirmation that he was in Unuted’s starting XI.

The midfielder enjoyed a very successful pre-season but his momentum was halted after picking up a devastating injury against Real Madrid.

He returned a few weeks ago but understandably, supporters have had to be patient to see the Carrington academy graduate return to action and make his mark – he did not disappoint at Goodison Park.

Mainoo was brilliant in his passing and how well he handled the ball. The United star kept possession well and almost certainly never lost it.

Especially in the opening 45 minutes, the 18-year-old was vital in relieving mounting pressure by virtue of the way he kept possession.

He regularly came deep to collect the ball from the back four before feeding it to his midfield partners or the forward players.

The thing that was perhaps most noticeable about Mainoo’s game was just how well he did under pressure. At times, he was surrounded by two or Everton players but he was not fazed – he calmly walked out of his duels with the ball.

Mainoo was strong in his actions and one could not tell he was making his first start in the Premier League.

The youngster was a defensive colossus. He came up with crucial blocks and interceptions without which, the Toffees could have possibly scored a few more goals.

During a period in the first half, Everton were putting United under pressure and looked set to find an equalizer after Garnacho’s wonder strike, but Mainoo’s brilliance in the middle of the park and in his defensive third kept them at bay.

The biggest compliment that can be paid to the dazzling Mainoo is that he significantly outperformed and outshone Fernandes and McTominay, who have hundreds of competitive appearances under their belts.

Compared to Mainoo, Fernandes and McTominay’s contributions were at a minimum. A very promising and dominant performance from the sensational Mainoo who has a bright future ahead of him.

United’s forwards back scoring goals again

Another huge positive from the game is that United’s forwards are back amongst the goals once more.

Before the game, the attacking players currently available to Ten Hag had just one Premier League goal between them – Rashford’s away goal against Arsenal at the Emirates on September 3.

However, only three minutes into proceedings in Merseyside, Garnacho found the back of the net with his fantastic bicycle kick that is arguably a goal-of-the-season contender.

11 minutes after the interval, Rashford who has been struggling for form doubled the Red Devils’ lead from the spot kick.

Martial won the penalty after being brought down by Ashley Young inside the Everton box. Fernandes unselfishly handed Rashford the penalty, seemingly to get his confidence back.

Martial clinched United’s third of the match to ensure whatever hopes Everton harboured of making an unlikely comeback were dashed.

The Frenchman produced a superb chipped finish to secure the win.

United’s forwards have come under intense scrutiny and criticism this season for failing to finish their chances but against Everton, they did well considering they didn’t have a lot to work with.

Before the match, Ten Hag told reporters that he was assertive his attackers would eventually click and start firing again.

The manager’s faith was certainly repaid in kind.

Hopefully, the goals now continue coming in plenty for the forwards who greatly needed the confidence with a number of crucial fixtures coming up.

There is still a place for Raphael Varane in this team

Among the players who did not cover themselves in glory was Lindelof.

More than once, the Swede was outdone by rival stars. Dominic Calvert-Lewin especially gave him a hard time all game.

Time and time again, Calvert-Lewin easily dispossessed Lindelof who appeared to be struggling with the Englishman’s physicality a bit.

Sean Dyche’s stars had chances to score and would have undoubtedly felt bad not to get even a consolation prize.

Luckily, Lindelof’s shortcomings did not cost United too much.

There has been plenty of talk about Varane’s exclusion, with Ten Hag preferring a partnership of Maguire and Lindelof.

If there is one thing to take from the game is that there is still a place in the team for the World Cup winner.

Ten Hag has said multiple times that Varane is still in his plans and gong off Lindelof’s display, it wouldn’t be outrageous to think that the former Real Madrid man can get his starting berth back.

He definitely brings about more calm, composure and steel in the backline.

Victor Lindelof voluntarily handed over his captain’s armband on Sunday night to Swedish teammate, Albin Ekdal.

Ekdal was playing in his 70th and final international appearance for his national side and according to Manchester United’s official website, the United number two decided to relinquish the captaincy for one night only.

The experienced Swedish centre back has played 246 times for United and 64 times for his national team. Lindelof was also recently the hero when he scored the winning goal in the Red Devils latest 1-0 win over Luton Town before the international break commenced.

The former Benfica man has also had the privilege of captaining the Scandinavians since August 2021, following Andreas Granqvist’s retirement.

Tonight would be different though, as “the Iceman” opted to let his colleague enjoy the responsibility of leading out his side for the night.

Ekdal was given a standing ovation as he left the field of play after 72 minutes at the Friends Arena in Stockholm.

The night itself was a successful one for Sweden even if their campaign has been far from satisfactory. The Swedes beat Estonia 2-0 in their final group game with goals from Viktor Claesson and Emil Forsberg.

Lindelof himself played the full 90 minutes and achieved a 7 rating on sofascore.

The defender had a quiet night, keeping a clean sheet for his side and only needing to intercept the ball once. Lindelof impressively won three out of four aerial duals and also had a strong passing accuracy of 87%. “The Iceman” even completed one successful dribble.

Sadly however, Lindelof and his teammates will not be participating in this summer’s Euros as they finished a distant third in their group with a meagre ten points collected from eight games.

Lindelof himself posted on social media after the game in honour of Ekdal, “end of a great journey. It’s been an honour my friend”.

The Swedish defender has fame already for being a nice guy.

The Peoples Person reported back in 2020 that the then 26-year-old was holidaying in his hometown of Västerås when he spotted a thief snatching a woman’s handbag and making his escape on a bicycle.

The former Benfica defender sprinted after the thief and held him down for five minutes until the police arrived. A spokesperson for Manchester United claimed “Victor feels that he just did what anyone else would have done in that situation”.

Lindelof will be hoping with the international break now over, he can keep up his pre international break form and continue helping his club side propel up the league table.

A few Manchester United stars were in action for their national sides as the November international break carries on.

Scott McTominay was named in Scotland’s starting XI for their UEFA Euro Qualifiers match against Georgia. Victor Lindelof also started for Sweden vs. Azerbaijan as did club skipper Bruno Fernandes who received Roberto Martinez’s nod in midfield when Portugal came up against Liechtenstein.

Here’s a roundup of how these United stars performed for their respective national teams.

Scott McTominay (Georgia 2-2 Scotland)

McTominay once again got on the scoresheet as Scotland held Georgia to a 2-2 stalemate at the Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia grabbed the opener 15 minutes into the game. However, McTominay restored parity just four minutes after the break.

The United midfielder found himself inside the Georgia box and carefully placed the ball into the corner of the goal.

It was the seventh goal in seven EURO 2024 qualifiers for the Carrington academy graduate who is certainly enjoying life.

Kvaratskhelia gave Georgia control of proceedings once again in the 53rd minute. It would have been enough to win the match but an extremely late goal in the dying embers of the game from Lawrence Shankland saw Steve Clarke’s men get a share of the spoils.

During the 90 minutes he was on the pitch, McTominay had an impressive 53 touches of the ball. He successfully delivered 42 of the 43 passes he attempted, managing a pass success rate of 98%.

The 26-year-old made one key pass. He attempted two crosses and found his target just once.

McTominay embarked on one dribble and came out on top. He won two of the ground duels he delved into. He failed to win the one aerial challenge he was required to contest.

The midfielder’s defensive game was lacking a little bit. He failed to register even one tackle, interception or clearance. This is undoubtedly something he will be keen to work on.

Victor Lindelof (Azerbaijan 3-0 Sweden)

Lindelof was part of the Sweden team that found itself at the end of a 3-0 battering by Azerbaijan.

The United defender slotted at the heart of his country’s backline to form a centre-back partnership with Filip Helander.

During the time he was in action, Lindelof made one clearance and as many tackles. He was dribbled past in one instance.

He made one error that directly led to an Azerbaijan goal.

Lindelof won two of his four duels on the ground. He also successfully challenged two of his six contests in the air.

The 29-year-old had 106 touches of the ball to his name and an impressive pass accuracy of 85% from the 79 successful passes he delivered to his teammates.

He made one key pass.

Lindelof tried to ping the ball long on 15 occasions. He found his target 10 times. The defender also created one big chance.

He set out on one dribble, which he completed successfully.

Bruno Fernandes (Liechtenstein 0-2 Portugal)

United captain Bruno Fernandes played for 67 minutes as Portugal eased past Liechtenstein in a 3-0 win.

The Selecao’s goals were grabbed by Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Cancelo.

Fernandes registered 97 touches of the ball and a pass accuracy of 86% in what was an all-action display from him in the middle of the park.

The playmaker made two key passes.

He only found his target with one of his seven crossing attempts. Fernandes did not complete any of his two dribbling attempts and won two of the five ground duels he delved into.

Fernandes only managed to put in one tackle.

(Stats obtained from Sofascore)

Portugal face Iceland next on Sunday.

The post Seven Manchester United players free to talk to European clubs from January appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

]]>

Many Manchester United fans will be dreaming of a busy winter window that will kick-start their season domestically and abroad.

However, the major stories from transfer windows are not always about who your clubs brings in, but also on who they decide to cut ties with.

Man United have seven players who have contracts ending in June 2024 and face an uncertain future beyond the end of the current campaign.

The Mirror has drawn attention to the players that could be moving on to new pastures in the summer. One rule of the transfer window is that “any player looking to move from one English team to another as a free agent can only open talks after entering the final month of their previous contract”. However, they can negotiate with foreign clubs from the January previous to the expiry date of their deal.

Safe in this knowledge, let’s take a look to see which of the seven Red Devils may opt for this route.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

The Mirror are downbeat on Wan-Bissaka’s chances of staying at the club. They sum him up as a player who has “veered from dependable player to a lightning rod for fan criticism”. The publication believes it is unlikely he will be offered a new deal. At the start of the season the English fullback seemed a shoe-in for a new contract but things on that front have certainly cooled down of late.

Consequently, The Peoples Person has reported that Ten Hag is interested in bringing in his own right back but many would argue that Wan-Bissaka may provide more effective backup than Diogo Dalot. Additionally, Wan-Bissaka would most certainly be of interest to English teams such as West Ham, so it is improbable that he would lack attractive offers from mid table Premier League clubs if United decide not to renew his deal. Unlikely to go.

Victor Lindelof

The Swede is another name that could depart the club in the summer. The Swedish captain has had plenty of admirers from abroad such as Atletico Madrid, so if he were to desire a new challenge, he would have numerous options as a free agent. However, Lindelof has already played 15 times for the club this season due to the defensive injury crisis and even scored the winning goal against Luton. Nonetheless, Victor may fall down the pecking order as United have been linked to many new central defenders including Jean-Clair Todibo, so the Swedish defender may choose this path, as he is certainly the most sought after of the seven. Likely to go abroad

Antony Martial

The French forward is probably a much clearer case. While Wan-Bissaka and Lindelof remain relatively popular players where you could envision a future back-up role at the club, Martial does not enjoy this reputation among supporters. The Frenchman has been heavily critiqued and has seemingly lost largely everything that made him winner of the Golden Boy award in 2015. Not many English clubs would be willing to sign the attacker but as long as he asked for sensible wages, a list of European clubs would most likely be attracted to him. The Peoples Person recently stated that Inter Milan and PSG are among such teams. Likely to go abroad

Hannibal Mejbri

The 20 year old Tunisian Mejbri is enjoying something of a breakthrough year, having played 5 times already for the Red Devils in this campaign and also having scored a wonder goal against Brighton in September. United do have an option to extend for a year and it is hard to see them not at least taking up this option. The Tunisian is hot-tempered and still has much to learn but it is unlikely that club or player are willing to give up on each other yet. Unlikely to go just yet

Jonny Evans

The Northern Irishman was a surprise signing during the summer but like Lindelof, has had to fill in more than he had probably anticipated due to the injury-ravaged defensive department. Despite admirably deputising, future summer signings at centre back, again like Lindelof, will most likely see Evans leave the club. He could decide to retire as he had contemplated before joining United or play for a lower division English team. Likely to go, but not abroad

Tom Heaton

The 37 year old keeper saw the arrival of two new keepers in the summer and has not played yet this season. The United academy graduate almost joined Luton Town in August but this deal collapsed. Heaton will most definitely leave unless offered some sort of coaching job, but again, he is unlikely to try and secure a deal abroad at this point in his career. Likely to go but not abroad

Alvaro Fernandez

The young Spanish left back will probably have developed the taste for first team football. Last season he played 42 times for Preston in the Championship and has been a regular for Granada in La Liga this year. He is highly rated at United and it is likely the club would love to tie him down to a new contract. However, with Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and possibly even Sergio Reguilon potentially in front of him, he may not have the patience to wait for his chance. Especially as the youngster is from Spain, he could well try and pursue a move to his homeland or elsewhere in the winter. Likely to go abroad

Manchester United put in yet another far-from-convincing performance but managed to scrape through with a 1-0 win against Premier League new boys Luton Town.

Profligacy in front of goal from the forwards was once again on display with Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho, and Marcus Rashford spurning glorious opportunities.

It required a second-half strike from Victor Lindelof to secure all three points and the United defender was asked about how he felt after scoring the winner.

“It was very nice. I don’t get to score very often anymore so it was fun to do it. Then it’s always special to do it at home in front of all the fans,” the Swede was quoted as saying by Fotbollskanalen.

Lindelof backing ETH

It has been a difficult season for the Red Devils with the club losing as many as nine games in all competitions so far and there has been a lot of heat put on manager Erik ten Hag.

The British media have been fueling sack rumours while claiming that the Dutchman might be losing his grip over the dressing room with the players downing tools.

But the Sweden international claimed it was far from the truth and maintained that the Dutch boss had not “lost the dressing room”. He also pointed out the fact that United are the most in-form team in the league at the moment.

“It has been tough, of course. In terms of performance, it has been up and down, we haven’t quite reached the level we wanted.

“And there will always be a lot written about a club like Manchester United. Other teams have been praised for their start to the season, but we are still only four or five points behind, I don’t know exactly.

“It’s not terribly bad, but certainly not at the level we want to be.”

The Iceman, as he is popularly referred to as, has been forced to don multiple hats during the current campaign, including playing as the left-back.

Despite injury worries in defence, the former Benfica star has not got as many chances in the heart of defence as he would have liked.

But Lindelof claimed competition for places was helping everyone improve, including himself and that he is looking forward to contributing more towards the team’s success.

Lindelof hoping to do better as season progresses

“It’s a little different. I’m not really used to it (playing as LB). I’m a player who can play in many different positions and I can do a job there but it’s definitely not the position I’m best at.

“Competition is always good, in a club like United there should be competition. I feel that I performed at an okay level. Then, of course, I can always do better.”

His contract with the 20-time English league champions ends next summer but the defender remains hopeful of extending his stay at the club he arrived back in 2017.

United hold an option to extend his deal by a year and that is likely to be triggered soon. “I get to see what happens. There is an option and it will most likely be activated,” the United star claimed.

Manchester United became the most in-form team in the Premier League with their victory over Luton Town before the international break.

However, that victory didn’t come easy as missed chances had them sweating looking at the prospect of more dropped points before an unlikely hero emerged.

Victor Lindelof’s calm finish in the second half sent United on their way to three points and the Swede has now been recognised as one of the best performers across Europe’s top leagues for that weekend.

With a WhoScored rating of 8.21, Lindelof rubs shoulders with the absolute elite of European football.

Alongside him in a three-man defence are PSG’s Marquinhos and Cagliari’s Dossena.

The frontline is the stuff of nightmares for any defenders, including Real Madrid pair Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr, along with Kylian Mbappe.

Shifting the focus back to Lindelof, the fans and the manager will hope that he joins Harry Maguire in a season of resurgence of the old guard.

The defender was having a nightmare season and had recently missed time due to injury.

His return came at the best time for Erik ten Hag as Jonny Evans is set for a spell on the sidelines and Raphael Varane remains mysteriously out of favour.

Just like Maguire, Lindelof took the opportunity with both hands and ran with it against Luton.

With a two-week international break window before United’s next game, away to Everton, he will likely be recognised for his efforts by retaining his place in the team.

The manager has shown that he picks the team based on form recently, with Maguire and Evans keeping their esteemed colleagues out.

Even Ten Hag-favourite Antony has been relegated to a bench role after consistently bad performance so Lindelof can expect to start against Everton on November 26.

Fans will hope that this is the start of a sterling run of form for the Swede because the United backline could really use all the luck right now.

Diogo Dalot 7- Restored to his preferred right side and had a lot of joy overlapping on his stronger foot. Had a good cross for McTominay which could have got him an assist.

Harry Maguire 7- The diagonal ball to Garnacho looked like a tactical ploy by Erik ten Hag and he found plenty of time to execute it as Luton didn’t press high. Had some forays forward and looked secure in defence.

Victor Lindelof 7- Calm and unassuming game, till he became the unlikely scorer of the winning goal. Really needed that performance after a chastening run pre-illness.

Sergio Reguilon 6- Looked too eager to impress and play it forward and in the process, needlessly gave it away many times. Much improved in the second half.

Scott McTominay 5- Should have done better from Dalot’s cross as he headed it over. United could do with a bit more thrust in the attacking box.

Christian Eriksen 5- An injury added to Erik ten Hag’s nightmares when he came off in the first half with a non-contact injury, regularly the worst one.

Marcus Rashford 4- He’s being forced to play his way into form because Ten Hag’s options are limited and it’s just not working for him right now. Erratic again in attack and snatching at chances he would have buried last season.

Bruno Fernandes 6- Was burdened with the creator-in-chief role again as he tried to force chances after getting agitated by Luton’s deep block. Still looks like the only player likely to create something.

Alejandro Garnacho 6.5- The game had the best and worst of Garnacho at display as he showed attacking instincts and fearlessness but suffered from hesitation when the final product needed to be delivered. Missed some great chances.

Rasmus Hojlund 7- Fans await an update on his injury nervously. His overall play leaves no good stone unturned but the ball just won’t go in for him in the league. Missed the game’s best chance early on as he shot straight at the goalkeeper from less than 10 yards.

Substitutes:

Mason Mount 6- Had a chance to impress with Eriksen coming off early but again struggled to stand out despite his hard work and efforts. His Premier League duck for United remains unbroken.

Antony 6- Came on for Garnacho and impressed immediately, laying on a chance on a platter for Rashford. The cameo off the bench should be his role for the next few games.

Raphael Varane 6- Not much impact.

Anthony Martial 5- He will need to step up if Hojlund is out for an extended time but nothing he has shown so far makes that a realistic expectation.

Manager Erik ten Hag 7- A much-improved performance and the scoreline would have been far more comfortable if the forwards remember how to finish.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford was part of the group that took part in a light training session ahead of his side’s crucial Champions League clash against FC Copenhagen.

Rashford of course missed United’s game vs. Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday after he suffered a heavy knock during training before the game,

Erik ten Hag told reporters that it was decided there was no need to risk the Englishman with a number of important matches coming up.

Rashford was spotted undertaking drills alongside his teammates, in what will come as a major boost to Ten Hag in terms of selection.

It remains to be seen whether Rashford will be fit enough to line up against Jacob Neestrup’s men at Parken Stadium.

Also present in training was Victor Lindelof. Lindelof missed the Fulham game due to illness. All signs point to the fact that he has recovered and will be in contention to feature against FC Copenhagen.

According to The Manchester Evening News, Kobbie Mainoo was not spotted at Carrington earlier today.

Mainoo was on the bench during the weekend and also made the matchday squad for the derby defeat at the hands of Manchester City.
