In Loving Shape

15 Nov

In Loving Shape

You cannot run a marathon
Unless you’ve done the training
No one’s won an election
Without lots of campaigning

You cannot be well versed on topics
Without much research
Your soul or spirit cannot grow
If confined to one church

In all aspects of life we can’t
Do things we hope to do
Unless we do the work to get
In shape to see it through

Which brings us to the people who
Wish they could show more love
Despite their wants they do not have
Much training to show of

And how does one prepare themselves
To love all selflessly?
By loving themselves just as much
To very same degree

Much of loving lies in caring
Protecting, defending
How can one love others when
To themselves they aren’t tending?

How can someone who abuses
Their bodies with drugs
Or alcohol or cigarettes
Hope to give loving hugs?

How can someone who slowly
Poisons their veins with junk
Clogs their arteries and makes
Their heart strain, lurch and clunk

Hope to care for someone else
And rise to do what’s needed
To take care when their own advice
Goes constantly unheeded?

How can someone not in shape
From loving their own body
Caring for it, protecting
So that it isn’t shoddy

Hope to be in any kind
Of shape to love another?
If you can’t help yourself, how much
Can you do for your brother?

Your sister? Mother? Father? Friend?
Your children and your pets?
The most love you can give is the
Same as your body gets

So show some love and make the choice
That’s not rooted in craving
Physically and mentally
We should ourselves be saving

Not torturing ourselves over
Regrets from the past
And not consuming things that have
Bad effects that will last

Get in loving shape by caring
For your own well-being
Then you’ll start to see your love
For others fully freeing

What People Will Think

28 Apr
What People Will Think

You know what must be done but 4 words always hold you back:
“What will people think?” has always halted your attack
Those 4 words keep you from doing the things that must be done
To own your life and live with confidence but everyone

Casts judging eyes which make you second-guess yourself and say
“They’ll think I’m weird or crazy” if you choose a different way
But here’s the truth about what they will say if you decide
To empower yourself and choose to not blend in or hide

The cowards will think, “I wish I could be so very bold”
The narcissists will think, “There’s one less that can be controlled”
The fighters will think, “If they can then perhaps I can too”
The Warrior won’t think a thing ‘cause they’re right beside you

Do not be timid with your health, opinion or your soul
Do not allow what others think to unnerve or cajole
The weak and selfish will think poorly, the strong will be inspired
And none of it will play a part in what will be acquired

When you have done the work and earned unyielding self-respect
When you have sacrificed and sweat and kept your ego checked
When you have paid the price for iron will and steely grit
Nothing people think will ever coerce you to quit

Master Manipulators

Master Manipulators

They chuckle right away, a big and hearty, cheerful laugh
Setting you at ease with smiles that’d fail a polygraph
They butter you right up with compliments, “You’re looking well!”
Jokes and witty comments, they expertly weave their spell

They use basic psychology to get just what they want
Appealing to the ego while they act all nonchalant
Actors who don’t have a stage, they mingle with the crowd
Using all the right words to make you feel tall and proud

And many victims fall for it because they’re malnourished
For any positivity to make them feel flourished
So many have so little confidence that these fake smiles
And compliments are rarely met with suspicious denials

There’s no technique to vet them out, no manual or checklist
Just one intangible feeling that will always assist:
Empathy, a trait they lack, it stops from doing harm
Reminding us we’re connected, but they instead use charm

Because they’re disconnected which is why they always use
Manipulate for their own gain even if they abuse
Your empathy will unmask them and show how paper thin
That smile is, if they are pressed it shows under that grin

Is someone who’s empty inside and desperate to have “more”
Past all the charm is something sad and dark you can’t ignore:
Weakness, fear and selfishness disguised behind the lure
And when you do persist to ask, the ruse will not endure

Though they exploit emotions in all others, they can’t stand
To talk about their own, it’s an off-limits, taboo brand
Dare to delve with empathy and then just watch how fast
That charming smile dissipates when they feel they’re harassed

And that’s because the joy they flaunt is simply a veneer
Which hides a scheming, green-eyed monster with a jealous sneer
Perhaps you’d rather not know and prefer all the fake praise
But with awareness, such kudos will make an eyebrow raise

Ego Poetry

21 Apr
Ego Poetry

“Poetry is truth” they say, “confessions of the soul”
But most ballads that I have read are written by a troll
An ugly, weak and selfish monster known as the “ego”
Most poetry that I’ve observed speaks just of pain and woe

They speak of selfish attachment, how much a love is missed
They dwell on things that are no more, luscious lips that were kissed
Lament about an emptiness within caused by egress
Pain and suffering in rhyme, it’s purpose: to depress

These kinds of rhymes are not accounts of the spirit within
For spirits have no attachment, no desire, no skin
Spirits are unbreakable, indomitable too
But wordsmiths guided by their egos have confused the two

No matter how pretty the words, if the message is clear
To be of sorrow, misery, uncertainty or fear
Then that is not the soul’s confession, just the ego’s chant
Wanting, wishing, praying, hoping, failing, hurting, can’t

Read my words and see my soul, I only speak of might
Of letting go, of empathy, of charging towards the fight
Of taking eyes off of the goal and revelling within
The challenge with intensity and focus, not chagrin

Each time a poem flows it is because my ego hands
The feather quill over to something within me that stands
A Warrior soul with no desire, no lament, no wailing
Only words of enduring, of conquering, prevailing

The Pursuit of Happiness

20 Apr
The Pursuit of Happiness

A basic right of life you have been told since you were small
“Pursuit of happiness” they guaranteed since you could crawl
They promised that you were entitled to your happiness
But added the world “pursuit” which has caused you all your stress

“Pursuit,” ironically, is what has caused anxiety
Desire, as the Buddha said, keeps you from being free
Wanting, hoping, praying for the things that bring you joy
Ironically are the same things which all your peace destroy

The very act of desire is what robs us of bliss
For wanting is the ego’s path into the dark abyss
That’s not to say we cannot try or train or have a goal
To fall down and get right back up is the will of the soul

But craving a specific outcome in close-minded way
And being blind to other results is the ego’s way
Pursuit is not required, happiness is where you stand
There to be enjoyed by only those who don’t demand

Love Thy Enemy?

30 Dec

Love Thy Enemy?

I’ve seen a couple folks who feel their spirit has been roused
Their inner Warrior’s awakened as my writes were browsed
They warn how all those before them should beware what’s to come
They threaten others because “A Warrior I have become!”
How sad and misguided to have missed the point so badly
Yes, enemies must be fought…but do not do so madly
Yes, a sneer may don your lips and teeth bared with true grit
But deep inside the heart, nothing but pure love should emit
Posturing and performance may be required to
Dissuade the ignorant normals who know not what they do
But deep inside where no one sees, there must be empathy
There must be courage to admit, “I love my enemy”
To say “I understand you even if I don’t condone”
To say “It hurts me to do this, your pain is not alone”
A Warrior is so plugged in, connected, so aware
That though sometimes they inflict pain, to do so causes wear
It is a choice that’s made with great deliberation since
To cause pain to another person causes SELF to wince
Most who have not awakened don’t suffer the effects
Right away, the “guilt” or “conscience” takes some time to flex
But truly what we should call this is “Empathy” my friends
And if you are a human being, there’s no way to cleanse
You are connected to them all, both loved ones and your foes
And you can’t start an argument or have it come to blows
And “win” because your foe incurred more hurt than you sustained
That is why after the rush, eventually you’re drained
‘Cause even the most self-absorbed, egoic person feels
Empathy for all those villains, scoundrels, tricksters, heels
Try your best to hate them, you will fail no matter what
And that’s because you’re here to LOVE, it’s programmed in your gut
So when you feel like talking tough about how they will pay
Be sure to take a moment and mention your own dismay
Perhaps if you would ponder self-destruction, you’d relent
You wouldn’t be so quick to fight a years-long argument
Let it go and wish them well, there’s no battle to “win”
Instead focus all of your strength on the great war within

Nurture Thyself

28 Dec

Nurture Thyself

“Do you love yourself?” the question is so often asked
“Of course!” the answer’s said with a smile that expertly masks
A body that is not nurtured, it’s slow and brain is fogged
Black tar coating lungs and grease within arteries clogged
An irritated attitude, frustrated and hostile
“Yes, I love myself!” some say despite all of the bile
That does reside within them, that love quickly turns to hate
When they don’t get their way, they grow offended and irate
And all because they’re weakened by the lack of nurturing
The failure to treat their body like it’s a Queen or King
To love thyself means to encourage your own health and strength
To stimulate, develop, foster, go to any length
To sacrifice in order to fuel love’s demanding fire
To not just say the concept but to work, to do, perspire
And when the work is done, you won’t need to answer the question
Your glowing skin with pinkish hue will serve as your expression
Your wide awake and alert eyes will provide your reply
Your focused thinking, energy, cheer and joy will reply
Love yourself? Of course you do! Who’d admit they do not?
But do you nurture yourself? That will take a bit more thought
