The Neverending Battle

11 Nov

Not every war is justified, and not every soldier is there because they want to be. Many of them have been manipulated into bearing arms through fear of repercussions. A true warrior knows that simply having a heartbeat comes with repercussions. Pick your battles wisely, and never fight a battle for someone who wouldn’t pay the price required to fight it themselves.

“My conscious won’t let me go shoot my brother, or some darker people, or some poor hungry people in the mud for big powerful America. And shoot them for what? They never called me nigger. They never lynched me. They didn’t put no dogs on me. They didn’t rob me of my nationality. Rape and kill my mother and father. What I’m gonna go shoot them for what? I gotta go shoot them, them little poor little black people and little babies and children and women. How can I shoot them poor people? Just take me to jail!” ~Muhammad Ali

The Neverending Battle

Private Bennings hears three bullets
Whiz right by his head
Two of them hit Jefferson
He falls to the ground, dead

The enemy unleashes a
Salvo of mortar shells
One explodes in front of him
He hears the ringing bells

He tries to find his bearings but
Can’t seem to turn around
He realizes it’s because
Beside him on the ground

Are his two legs as well as an
Arm plus a couple fingers
Though no longer a part of him
Their phantom pain still lingers

He drops back to the ground and looks
Straight up into the sky
He wonders how he wound up here
As he begins to cry

The recruiter had promised him
An education paid
A job, a house, a family
No cause to be afraid

They told him he would be part of
The world’s fighting elite
Unstoppable, invincible
Beyond any defeat

He doesn’t even know what this
Big war is all about
Why was he on the front line?
“I’m just a simple scout”

He closes eyes and whispers, “God
I’m coming home to you
I’m sorry,” and his God replies
“You know not what you do”

The medic rushes forward and
He searches for a pulse
The sight of blood and guts and veins
No longer does repulse

“Hang on,” the medic says although
He knows Bennings is gone
Another wasted man used as
An expendable pawn

“I’m sorry,” Bennings says with his
Last breath and then he dies
The eighth man that he’s lost today
But still the medic cries

“Madness,” medic thinks and he
Scrambles back to the trench
“Madness,” he cries out as rain
And dirt and blood still drench

“All for madness,” medic says
“Disguised as greater cause
All to feed the egos of
The men who make the laws”

He hears another soldier scream
And quickly jumps to feet
A bullet tears right through his heart
He feels his life deplete

“Release,” he thinks as peace and quiet
Wash over his mind
Release from war, from hate, from death
From that which is mankind

“Let them fight their neverending battle
I don’t care”
The medic says as bombs explode
He says a final prayer:

“Dear Lord, it is my final wish
That you forgive this man
For not standing against the ones
Who came up with this plan

Forgive me for not having the
Courage to stand opposed
To men who tell me to kill others
With hearts that are closed

Dear Lord, forgive me for allowing
Haters to lead me
Dear Lord, I give what’s left of this
Tired man unto thee”

The medic dies and the war rages
On ‘till end of time
‘Till birds no longer sing and ‘till
Poets no longer rhyme

It rages ‘cause of fear by men
And women who don’t stand
Against the type of people who
Give “KILL!” as a command

facetoface

Into War

To war you must sometimes decide
To head into, to walk, to ride

To face the selfish ignorants
To aid the weak, be their defense

Against all those who take and take
The cowardly who aren’t awake

The ones who do lack empathy
Who just one point of view do see

In war we must engage these boors
Cowards run, but one endures

The Warrior stands face to face
And only does exhibit grace

No anger or hostility
Just searing, painful, third-degree

Of truth is hurled at all who hurt
For their own gain, let us assert

Let Warriors step up and walk
And stare in eyes of those who talk

And talk and talk but do so little
Let us show them just how brittle

Their selfish egos really are
As we draw blade of truth and scar

With words like “Coward,” “Selfish,” “Weak”
“Self-centered,” “Self-absorbed” and “Bleak”

No insults hurled, just what’s observed
And truth will make ego unnerved

Do not fear the war on hate
It is every Warrior’s fate

To walk into the fire though
All others run away in woe

Towards the things which irritate
Which scare and cause to be irate

To stare into its pupils and
Refuse to budge, to make a stand

To say, “You move” to bullies who
Wish you as well would say “Adeiu”

If more would go into this war
And not think of it as a chore

If more would face the ugliness
Instead of saying, “Too much stress!”

Then those who bully and torment
And tease would finally relent

Because they’d know there was a price
And every bully would think twice

They’d think, “Perhaps I’ll hold my tongue”
For fear a Warrior’s among

The timid masses and would go
Into war, stand toe to toe

And give them not a single inch
Not be afraid and never flinch

Stare into their hate filled eyes
And say, “I can see through your guise

I can see past this mask you’ve made
And it does not make me afraid

You don’t have an effect on me
So lean in, come look close and see

That I was born to face, confront
To step in path and take the brunt

And still survive to just repeat
To go to war while rest retreat”

And into war we’ll always walk
With those who disrespect and mock

It’s into war where we reveal
Our iron will and grace of steel

Remembering

In remembrance of every Warrior
who sacrificed EVERYTHING
for an ideal
for a cause
for us

Remembering

When I wake in my bed
Soft pillow under head
I remember

As I watch stunning dawn
While I put my clothes on
I remember

When I go grab a seat
To have something to eat
I remember

As I drive off to work
And the streets aren’t berserk
I remember

As I look at the sky
And see no warships fly
I remember

As I think of my rights
Which were won through your fights
I remember

As I think of the men
Who will not breathe again
I remember

The price that you paid
So we’re not afraid
I remember

The freedom of speech
And for our dreams to reach
I remember

To praise a Creator
And not a dictator
I remember

When troubles arise
I’ve no moans or cries
‘Cause I remember

I won’t disrespect
All you did protect
‘Cause I remember

That it cost you your lives
But your legend survives
‘Cause I remember

I’ll always remember…

Madness vs Wisdom

Madness vs Wisdom

At the dawn of time, two forces
Came into existence
One was Wisdom, made of peace
And Madness, from resistance

The force of Wisdom saw things as
The way they really were
Madness, on the other hand
Saw what it did prefer

And when it turned out things were not
Precisely as it wanted
Madness lost control and felt
Frustrated, angry, haunted

It couldn’t let it go because
It thought that it knew best
Wisdom on the other hand
Did never feel as stressed

It took its peace of mind in knowing
That things cannot be
Exactly as the vision in
Your mind that you may see

Instead it opened itself up
To different paths and ways
Seeing obstacles as more
Than annoying delays

Wisdom recognized that those
Are opportunities
To learn, to train, to grow, not just
Struggles meant to displease

Eventually there came a day
When Wisdom and Madness
Crossed each other’s paths and blocked
Each other’s own progress

Madness used it’s anger and
It’s hateful, spiteful talk
It circled and it attacked and
It pushed and pulled and stalked

Wisdom fought with all its strength
But not by the same means
Instead it relied on its training
And all its routines

It let Madness do all it did
And did not expect more
It stood firm with its peace of mind
And waged a peaceful war

And what Madness soon learned was that
It could not maintain hate
For an indefinite time
It was far too much weight

It grew tired and silent in
The face of Wisdom’s peace
The hateful words and violent acts
Eventually did cease

And as Madness sat and recouped
Wisdom simply walked on
Walking into horizon
Until all trace was gone

It didn’t gloat of victory
It let it go instead
Just as it did with the acts
That had intended dread

Madness would recover and
Many foes would it thwart
But against one enemy
It always came up short

Madness vs Wisdom was
Always the same outcome
Because Wisdom was not entrenched
It never could succumb

It flowed and bent and let go of
Whatever came its way
And when the two collide, it’s still
The same result today

Pop Culture Poetry: Sarge (G.I. Joe)

Sarge

Ten-hut, you maggot! On your feet
You spineless little puke!
I’m not all warm and fuzzy like
That other sergeant, Duke

My job’s to whip you into shape
And yeah, I’m talking WHIP!
It will not take a long time to
See I run a tight ship

‘Cause stakes are high and we’re at war
With ruthless terrorists
When you’ve emptied your last clip
You’ll come at them with fists!

And if they blow your arms off then
You’ll kick ‘em in the brass
And if they blow your legs off too
You’ll bite them on their ass!

Do I make myself clear, grunt?
There is no “quit” for you!
I don’t care if your heart stops
And if your face turns blue

You will continue as a corpse
You spineless little worm!
Death is not something that makes
A real G.I. Joe squirm!

It’s just an itty, bitty little
Setback for us, son!
You will get up, you will dust off
And then reload that gun!

You will not stop because the stakes
Are this flag that I wave
You will help keep it “Land of Free”
As well as “Home of Brave”

Now drop and give me twenty, slime!
Before this here baton
Finds its way across your face
And makes that smile gone!

Ok, not bad, at ease, disease
You didn’t make me sick
Hit the showers and your bunk
And give your wounds a lick

Because if you thought this was bad
Just wait until tomorrow!
You haven’t seen the slightest bit
Of real heartbreak or sorrow!

You’ll do it ‘cause I tell you to
You’ll run and jump and show
The enemy that we’re the best
While yelling out “YO JOE!”

DISMISSED!

Pop Culture Poetry: Hands of Steel

20 Aug

Hands of Steel

This traveller comes
From far away
A planet in
Full disarray

A world severed
By hate and lust
For power that’s
Left dead to rust

This shepherd sees
The end is near
And knows he must
Leave all that’s dear

He calls his flock
To board their ship
But are so weak
They can’t equip

The vessel to
Defend from foes
The traitors board
And come to blows

The shepherd uses
Hands of steel
To show his flock
Just how to deal

With anyone
Who tries to take
The peace that they
Want to remake

He knows even
Though they are fleeing
Freedom’s the right
Of a sentient being

He grabs a foe
And hoists him high
And hurls him at
The foe’s ally

The two careen
Into their chief
He swats them off
Like a small leaf

The silver scourge
Lifts on his arm
An instrument
Of deadly harm

The cannon swells
With purple light
But before
It can ignite

Two hands of steel
Come forth and grab
The cannon and
Then throw a jab

Across the silver
Terror’s face
Knocking him
Off of his base

The shepherd lands
A mighty kick
Which dents his
Nemesis’s thick

Armor and he
Doesn’t wait
With hands of steel
He grabs the plate

And spins the silver
Scourge around
Off of a wall
Then to the ground

The scourge smiles
A hint of pride
As the two
Leaders collide

He recalls how
The shepherd was
And what he’s now
Become because

Of being pushed
To his limit
Most others
Already quit

But this shepherd
Was a rare breed
He refused
To concede

The freedom of
All of his friends
Where many hid
This one defends

“It’s over” the
Steel scourge does roar
And his own
Steel hands now bore

Towards the shepherd’s
Optic lights
Overpowered
But still fights

His followers
All see him hold
His own against
A foe twofold

The strength of him
And ten times more
Experienced
In any war

His bravery
Rouses his flock
And soon with hands
Of steel they knock

And strike and blast
Those who attack
The time has come
To all fight back

The red and yellow
Brothers team
To throw the blue foe
Through a beam

The pacifist
Evades the sting
Of a null-ray
And grabs a wing

And hurls the foe
Towards the aged
Red warrior
Who’s now uncaged

The silver scourge
Sees all his weak
Prey’s courage now
Somehow pique

He now knows he
Must cut the head
Off of the one
Who’s courage spread

He bores down on
The shepherd’s throat
As wires snap
The scourge does gloat

“Die” his raspy
Voice does growl
But an ally
Is on the prowl

The black and white
Brother jumps on
While the small green
Brother with brawn

Grabs hold a leg
The two give all
To save their shepherd
From the maul

It’s all he needs
With hands of steel
He takes control
Makes his foe reel

The silver scourge
Has no one to
Come to his aid
Where is his crew?

Why don’t they help
The fight he’s in?
He sees the white one
At him grin

And then remembers
He trusts no one
Their treacherous
Help he needs none

The shepherd sees
The scourge lose trust
In all his troops
And knows he must

Always have it
For all his team
It’s what makes
His side supreme

Before the duel
Can be decided
The ship becomes
All misguided

It spins out of
Control and stalls
Pulled towards
The Earth and falls

Swooping down
To then collide
Crashing into
Mountainside

Everyone’s
Eyes slowly dim
The shepherd knew
Chances were slim

But as his mind
Does fade away
A heavy heart
Will never weigh

He fought with hands
Of steel and saw
That none of his
Flock did withdraw

They did not cower
They did not weep
They followed bravely
Rose to keep

Their freedom and
They made him proud
They broke free of
The fearful shroud

His lights go out
He sleeps and waits
To hear the telling
Of their fates

When one day rock
Will not conceal
All the mighty
Hands of steel
