Spread The Fear

23 Oct

Spread the Fear

The radio turns on to wake you for the next work day
The first thing that you hear is how the world is in dismay
People being run over by cars that fled the scene
Another child missing and another murdered teen
A cop shot down by bad guys while making an arrest
Right between the eyes and then a couple in the chest
Earthquakes tearing buildings down and storms that loom ahead
The more you tune in to the grief the more the fear is spread
It slowly crawls off of the page, TV, or radio
And creeps into your mind where it will never cease to grow
Countries warring with each other, “What if it spreads here?”
Economy is crashing, “I’ll lose all things I hold dear!”
And more you fear, the more you’ll tune back into the fear vendors
Hoping that someone will rise to become our defenders
Surprise, surprise, there’s just more fear, there’s just more ache and dread
Just more reasons to stay home and not get out of bed
At some point you have to admit that what they’re dolling out
Is no different than a drug that you snort up your snout
Tuning in to hear the constant destruction and death
Makes you just like a junkie who’s addicted to meth
You’ve snorted, shot up and smoked it so long that now you’re hooked
“A car crash on the 401? Ah, now I’m feeling cooked”
“I’ve gotta see the news tonight! Some kid got knifed at school!”
And when that story’s done, you’ll wait for the next piece that’s cruel
I turned my news off long ago when it was clear to me
That every venue in the news reported “balance free”
They focused more on fear and dread and less on things with hope
Their business is in dealing their despair inducing dope
I know this for a fact because I put them to the test
Recently when I embarked an altruistic quest
I set out to raise funds and hope for cancer patients who
Are battling a bigger fear than news could ever brew
Some local papers said to me “We’ll think about it some”
Guess they needed time to try to spin it as more glum
And others, no response at all. Not interested in hope
More concerned with spreading fear than helping patients cope
Same goes for the TV stations, all except for one
Not enamoured with the tale since there’s no smoking gun
Point proven both to myself and hopefully to you
About the kind of message that the newsman likes to spew
You won’t find hope or strength or faith when you go turn that dial
All they want to dispense is all of their fearful bile
Stop the spread and tune out from the news that does no good
The stories that discourage you from seeing things that could
Set your mind at ease and rouse your passion and your nerve
To realize the greatest purpose in life is to serve
The fear wants you to stay inside and keep serving their needs
Listening to their commercials bringing them proceeds
The fear will keep you in your house, curled up in a scared ball
Only when you turn it off can you start walking tall

Drama

“The fact is we can only love what we know personally. And we cannot know much. In public affairs, in the rebuilding of civilization, something less dramatic and emotional is needed, namely tolerance.”
~E. M. Forster

Drama

Drama, drama, everywhere
We sit ‘fore TVs and we stare
And watch the actors all exaggerate

Reactions to their dilemmas
Our real world drama is because
These make-believers amplify their hate

They’re given gold awards when they
Animatedly convey
Their over-the-top responses to pain

And those who have no reaction
Fail to garner much attraction
They’re “bad actors” because they do refrain

From whining, crying, being weak
It’s tears and rage that we do seek!
And in real life when that pain comes about

We mimic all those great actors
When dealing with our detractors
As we shout, scream, bellow, argue and pout

The Warrior’s a different breed
No actor on TV does lead
How they react when challenges arise

To get upset and let top blow
Like Nicholson and De Niro
Is lowly, weak, pathetic and unwise

The Warrior knows full well that
Such drama in real world falls flat
It does not lead to Oscar winning scenes

It only leads to selfishness
To ignorance, to ache and stress
And so they leave it for the TV screens

They calm their nerves and steady face
They take deep breathes, remember grace
And they deliver their words with great poise

While all the normals imitate
The drama that they think’s so great
On TV but in real world does destroy

Not That Busy

21 Feb

“When you are asked if you can do a job, tell ’em, ‘Certainly I can!’ Then get busy and find out how to do it.” ~Theodore Roosevelt

Not That Busy

A peculiar phenomenon
That I have always seen
Takes place whenever someone’s asked
To come out and convene

To take part in a get-together
With like-minded folks
There always seems to be a few
Who you just cannot coax

Because they’re “busy,” they have something
Going on that day
A thing that only takes up just
A fragment of their play

I’ve heard it time and time again,
“I’ve already made plans”
But what they say they’re busy with
Only few hours spans

I’ve even heard some blow it up
To wipe out a weekend
Events only four hours long
To the next day transcend

What is it about the mind
That says “You must recover”
“Write off the next day as well
For fear fatigue will hover”

I’ve heard some say they couldn’t make
A two minute phone call
Because they were so “busy” that
They were not free to stall

And yet I’ve seen those same people
With no minutes to spare
Drop it all to sit before
The TV and just stare

Watch their shows and movies and
Play endless video games
And later boast about their busy
Non-stop hectic claims

You’re not that busy, no one is
Don’t let your mind run wild
Don’t fall for thinking there are too
Many duties compiled

Call yourself on your B.S.
And don’t exaggerate
Never act as though you have
Far too much on your plate

Because each person knows the truth
That we are not that busy
Very few of us do reach
The point of being dizzy

Do not let your mind inflate
What’s being asked of you
And for the tasks you have right now
Take moment to review

Are you really that busy?
Is time really that rare?
Is stopping for a moment something
You would never dare?

I can only speak for one
In complete honesty
It wasn’t until I admitted
“I’m not that busy”

That my production level rose
And my training began
And people started calling me
“A wise, hard working man”

Do The Possible

26 Oct

Do The Possible

Many people focus on
The goals that are immense
The wishes deemed “impossible”
By those with “common sense”

We’re riddled with encouraging
Uplifting words of how
Nothing is impossible
When there’s sweat on your brow

But here today, I’d like to shed
Light on a different type
Of task, the kind that’s possible
The kind that gets no hype

It’s in the possible things where
We often come up short
So for these possibilities
Let me give this support:

When you’ve finished dinner and
You want to have some more
Remember that it’s possible
To get up and ignore

The food that’s on the table
It’s quite possible to place
The leftovers back in the fridge
And show your waistline grace

If you’re sitting on the couch
And watching some TV
It’s possible for you to click
It off and that room flee

Possible to walk outside
And walk around the block
Possible to choose your health
Over the TV’s schlock

If you’ve got the munchies, it is
Possible instead
Of eating junk, to grab some veggies
‘Till you’re feeling fed

When someone starts to piss you off
It’s possible to breathe
And keep your cool instead of getting
Upset while you seethe

It’s possible to say “Thank you”
When someone’s kind to you
To show appreciation for
The selfless acts they do

It’s possible to say “I love you”
To one that you love
All your shy throat and mouth need
Is just a little shove

So ask yourself, “What’s possible?”
The things that aren’t that tough?
And do the possible instead of
Impossible stuff

Timeless/Placeless

Timeless/Placeless

The reason why so many hear
The label “warrior”
And visions of chain mail and swords
And horses start to stir

Is because they’re all used to letting
Time and place define
Certain ways of life and letting
Those old days confine

The same thinking “within the box”
Is why so many feel
Their current location’s the only
Thing to them that’s real

They go to work in factories
And think that’s all they are
Just a working stiff who’s looking
Forward to the bar

They go to work in an office
And see the drab décor
And think it’s no place to allow
All their passion to roar

They sit at home and since it’s all
Familiar and boring
They doze off on the couch while
Watching TV, loudly snoring

They think that the ways of the knights
Paladins, samurai
Have all expired because time
And place do not apply

And that’s where every single one
Of them has missed the point
It doesn’t matter what the day
And neither where the joint

A warrior is not defined
By where he or she stands
A warrior is always one
At work or beach’s sands

And neither does the time of day
Or month or year define
When one is a warrior
When one can show their spine

When one can show their passion and
Their raw intensity
The calendar does not constrain
From who we’re meant to be

Think outside the box, don’t be
A simple minded bloke
It’s time that we stopped letting our
Surroundings blind and choke

To a warrior it makes
No difference when or where
The creed is something that’s followed
As long as you have air

So if you’re able to breathe deep
Wherever you are now
Then that’s the perfect time and spot
To take the warrior’s vow

To live your live with strength and peace
And fortitude and grace
To focus and serve selflessly
Regardless of the place

Or year it says on calendar
It’s not about the fashion
It’s not about an armored suit
It’s all about the passion

Have Book – Will Travel

2 Oct

Have Book – Will Travel

Feeling bored? Feel like you need
To take a trip somewhere?
Here’s a tip that doesn’t call
For flying through the air

Crack open a book and lose
Yourself within its pages
Many different worlds have been
Constructed through the ages

Oh, I know, you’re one of those
Who doesn’t like to read
Your lack of patience and craving
For TV does impede

But how often can you tell me
You’ve been completely drawn
Into all those TV shows
That only seem to spawn

Commercials for all the things
On which you’re pushed to spend?
Not to mention plot lines that
Don’t ever seem to end

And how easy is it to be
Transported elsewhere if
You’re in a movie theatre
And all you hear is sniff

And coughing, chatting, rustling
And chomping of popcorn?
All of these distractions leaving
You just feeling worn

Grab a book and crack it open
Sit down and breathe deep
Yes, I know the first few pages
Always seem so steep

But just like with anything else
If you can get momentum
You’ll be amazed at what that boring
Book will soon become

Despite not having flashing lights
Or any blaring tunes
Soon you’ll realize the best
Way to spend afternoons

Is not sitting in front of your
TV with mouth agape
Far off look in your eyes while
You’re hoping for escape

Only in the pages of
A good book will you be
Whisked away to other places
That you’d never see

Because the pages call you to
Be creative as well
To picture people and places
Imagine and foretell

It’s true when they say “less is more”
And most would not dispute
When a movie’s adapted
It isn’t as astute

As the book it was based on
Because they’ve taken out
All of our imagination
And put in throughout

Blaring sounds and S-F-X
And other baby food
Meant to spoon feed our senses
And keep all our eyes glued

Grab your remote and turn off
The lights and all the noise
Settle down with a good book
And the tale it deploys

Let your own imagination
Take you for a ride
Let the prose be your path and
Let author be your guide

Use those brain cells, interact
With stories you take in
Don’t just sit and vegetate
Because that does wear thin

Eventually you’ll feel boxed in
Because you’ve seen it all
Never having any say
Because of that fourth wall

But with a book you’re in control
Of what you hear and see
Not just shackled to the couch
But far away and free

The reason most enjoy the book
More than the movie is
Because the reader has more say
With books than with show biz

The reader can decide how someone
Would say certain lines
The reader is responsible
For clothes and set designs

The reader is empowered and
That’s why we all get lost
In the pages of the novel
And why they exhaust

Because we all participate
In the tale being told
Invested in the characters
As the myth does unfold

So turn off your TV and grab
A good old fashioned book
Or load one on your iPad, Kindle
Computer or Nook

And have a safe journey to where
The story will take you
Bon voyage, auf wiedersehen
Aloha, ciao, adieu
