Patience

Patience

Patience isn’t something that
You can flip off and on
It can’t be gained with intellect
And can’t be forced with brawn

You can’t use complex formulas
In order to be calm
Logic doesn’t help that much
When folks aren’t in your palm

And muscle won’t change someone’s mind
When they refuse to hear
Instead of building up patience
You’re just instilling fear

So then the question begs to ask
“Just how does one keep cool?
How can I be more patient
Instead of act the fool?”

The answer comes in knowing that
Nothing is instantly
The cost is not with brains or brawn
But time that is the fee

I know that you will likely say,
“I haven’t got the time!”
Because you’re busy focused on
Your own successful climb

But that’s exactly where you’re wrong
So maybe it will aid
To think about it in this way
Of what your time is made

Time’s too big a concept for
People to comprehend
So break it down in smaller parts
To moments that append

You may not have the time to deal
With some kind of distress
But you can spare a moment to
Clean up a person’s mess

No one has the time to put up
With a person’s slip
But give a moment and you’ll see
Your patience start to grip

It may be hard to wait for someone
To get back to you
But give one moment and one more
The more that you accrue

Is directly related
To patience you amass
Benching moments just like weights
And building up your class

So next time someone does you wrong
Or tries to pass the buck
Don’t let yourself get all upset
And start to run amok

Take a moment from your stock
Of time you have to use
‘Cause that’s the price that patience costs
So have you paid your dues?

The Time That’s Left

The Time That’s Left

A quirky twist of fate to be imbued with the belief
That we will live forever, yet our time on Earth is brief
We make bold declarations that “Tomorrow, things will change!
Tomorrow the battle begins! I’ll plan and rearrange!”

Procrastinating since we think because we’ve lived this long
Precedent would prove that we’ll for many years prolong
While all the truths which do dispel this naive ignorance
Are scoffed at, scorned, evaded or met with indifference

“Healthy” people dying of a heart attack at fifty
Time cut short despite their abstinence from drugs and whisky
Young lives cut too short because a mishap with car
Fate ignores how talented they were with a guitar

Children filled with love and life and innocence close eyes
And breathe their final breath despite their mothers’ prayers and cries
In one quick blink the life that was is now longer there
And though we witness death each year, so few seem to beware

“Tomorrow this, tomorrow that” despite constant reminders
“Tomorrow” is not guaranteed regardless of your blinders
So live for something that in fact you do possess right now:
This moment, wake up, look around, breathe deep, my dears, somehow

Be present and get up and do the things you have delayed
Revel in the chance, the gift and do not be afraid
The time that’s left is not something to look upon in fear
The seconds that remain are something to love and revere

Time is almost up, my dears, get up and make the most
May I remind that very soon your spirit leaves its host?
And what will the survivors say? That you just sat and thought?
Or that you were a Warrior and PUSHED and STRIVED and FOUGHT?

Wait…

31 Aug

“Life was always a matter of waiting for the right moment to act.” ~Paulo Coelho

Wait…

When something is important and you need it right away
It isn’t so important that it should cause you dismay
Wait…

When someone asks a question and you rush to do your best
To find the answer, stay calm while that question is addressed
Wait…

When someone says or does something that you find irritating
Before you blurt out something you’ll regret that’s laced with hating
Wait…

Take a deep breath, fall silent and take a moment to
Think about your reaction before you start to spew
Wait…

Regardless of if you think that it’s rude to make them wait
Sixty-seconds never altered anybody’s fate
Wait…

But sixty-seconds is enough time to decide which course
Is best to take and will not leave you saddled with remorse
Because you lost your temper or you got stressed to the max
Waiting is the most effective response to attacks
So wait…

Not That Busy

21 Feb

“When you are asked if you can do a job, tell ’em, ‘Certainly I can!’ Then get busy and find out how to do it.” ~Theodore Roosevelt

Not That Busy

A peculiar phenomenon
That I have always seen
Takes place whenever someone’s asked
To come out and convene

To take part in a get-together
With like-minded folks
There always seems to be a few
Who you just cannot coax

Because they’re “busy,” they have something
Going on that day
A thing that only takes up just
A fragment of their play

I’ve heard it time and time again,
“I’ve already made plans”
But what they say they’re busy with
Only few hours spans

I’ve even heard some blow it up
To wipe out a weekend
Events only four hours long
To the next day transcend

What is it about the mind
That says “You must recover”
“Write off the next day as well
For fear fatigue will hover”

I’ve heard some say they couldn’t make
A two minute phone call
Because they were so “busy” that
They were not free to stall

And yet I’ve seen those same people
With no minutes to spare
Drop it all to sit before
The TV and just stare

Watch their shows and movies and
Play endless video games
And later boast about their busy
Non-stop hectic claims

You’re not that busy, no one is
Don’t let your mind run wild
Don’t fall for thinking there are too
Many duties compiled

Call yourself on your B.S.
And don’t exaggerate
Never act as though you have
Far too much on your plate

Because each person knows the truth
That we are not that busy
Very few of us do reach
The point of being dizzy

Do not let your mind inflate
What’s being asked of you
And for the tasks you have right now
Take moment to review

Are you really that busy?
Is time really that rare?
Is stopping for a moment something
You would never dare?

I can only speak for one
In complete honesty
It wasn’t until I admitted
“I’m not that busy”

That my production level rose
And my training began
And people started calling me
“A wise, hard working man”

Busy

10 Jan

“Beware the barrenness of a busy life.” ~Socrates

Busy

Sorry, I don’t have the time
To talk to you today
I’m too busy with my life
To hear what you’ve to say

I’ve got this thing to do right now
And it can’t wait a sec
But maybe if things do ease up
Can I get a raincheck?

Not sure when that will be though
This thing is so high stakes
I’m so invested and full-blast
I can’t put on the brakes

I wish I could put it on hold
And ask what’s new with you
But you have to understand
My spare moments are few

I’ve barely got the time to eat
Or make a change of clothes
Or watch the playoff game tonight
Or other favourite shows

Sorry, I wish I could help
There’s so much going on
I’m so tied up in my affairs
I’m just a bit withdrawn

With what is going on around
The world outside of me
Hopefully I’ll have time to
Open my eyes and see

That the greatest purpose in
Life is to serve others
Maybe once things calm a bit
I’ll have time for my brothers

I’ll tell you what, this thing I’ve got
Could hold on just a bit
It’s not the end of the world if
We take the time to sit

And now that I think twice about
This other thing I’ve got
It won’t take as much time as I
Thought that it would allot

And since there’s times I’m really bored
And have nothing to do
I’d feel like such a hypocrite
To have no time for you

When I stop and ponder how
The word “busy” is used
I realize I’m just asking
Myself to be excused

For only having time for me
And my selfish affairs
It’s not a word that’s ever used
By anyone who cares

So strike what I said earlier
I’m not busy at all
My stuff can wait ‘till later on
I’ve got time for your call

It’s funny how despite how busy
Every day would seem
I didn’t realize that time’s
Passing was not extreme

There’s always moments to step back
From our busy day’s work
Service is the one job that
We shouldn’t ever shirk

Short Wisdom

Short Wisdom

There isn’t much that can be said
If only a few words are read
Wisdom isn’t nice and short
And small attention spans just thwart

If you are serious about
Gaining some of wisdom’s clout
You’ll have to make the time to read
‘Cause it’s not a trait gained through speed

Try Harder

1 Sep

Try Harder

When you try your best and it doesn’t work
And you lose your cool and then go berserk
Try harder

When you make a plan that’s not in the cards
When you’re tackled short of just a few yards
Try harder

When you get a message and you think it can wait
And you put off responding ‘till a later date
Try harder

When you’ve had a bad day that’s pushed you to the brink
And you try to find solace by grabbing a drink
Try harder

When you’re mad at someone ’cause they screwed up once more
And you unload on them with your vengeful roar
Try harder

When you know you should go for a jog or a run
But you stay on the couch because it’s more fun
Try harder

When you’re asked for your help but you tell them “I can’t”
Because you’re so busy you’ve no time to grant
Try harder

When you see something weird and make fun with jokes
‘Cause your personal tastes are not like those folks
Try harder

When you throw in the towel and whimper “I quit!”
‘Cause you can’t bare to take another big hit
Try harder

When you come home from work and just sit on the couch
And spend your evening being a tired grouch
Try harder

When someone you love doesn’t get your attention
When their thoughtfulness doesn’t get any mention
Try harder

When you read or see something that brings up your mood
But you don’t share with others so they’ll feel renewed
