What People Will Think

28 Apr
What People Will Think

You know what must be done but 4 words always hold you back:
“What will people think?” has always halted your attack
Those 4 words keep you from doing the things that must be done
To own your life and live with confidence but everyone

Casts judging eyes which make you second-guess yourself and say
“They’ll think I’m weird or crazy” if you choose a different way
But here’s the truth about what they will say if you decide
To empower yourself and choose to not blend in or hide

The cowards will think, “I wish I could be so very bold”
The narcissists will think, “There’s one less that can be controlled”
The fighters will think, “If they can then perhaps I can too”
The Warrior won’t think a thing ‘cause they’re right beside you

Do not be timid with your health, opinion or your soul
Do not allow what others think to unnerve or cajole
The weak and selfish will think poorly, the strong will be inspired
And none of it will play a part in what will be acquired

When you have done the work and earned unyielding self-respect
When you have sacrificed and sweat and kept your ego checked
When you have paid the price for iron will and steely grit
Nothing people think will ever coerce you to quit

Deserving

7 Dec

“Deserve’s got nothing to do with it.” ~William Munny, “Unforgiven”

deserving
Deserving

I walked past a small woman who
Madly shouted at phone:
“I deserve much more than this!”
Which made me simply groan

So many people out there
Who think they do deserve
Who only think about what they
Should get, not how to serve

A Warrior is free from stress
‘Cause they deserve nothing
No one owes them, they don’t wait
For what the world will bring

They do not do a task or deed
With thought of what’s been earned
Outward rewards are something
Which Warriors have spurned

The only thing a Warrior earns
Originates within
Self-respect, self-confidence
A jutted-out strong chin

Head held high ‘cause they’re content
With what they have worked for
What they deserve does emanate
From deep within their core

And so this angry lady stands
And spits her hateful rage
‘Cause someone once again did not
Properly guess her wage

They didn’t give her what she thinks
That she “deserves” so now
She’ll piss and moan and whine and cry
And constantly allow

Others to decide what she
Deserves and always be
A spoiled little child when
Some others don’t agree

The Warrior is not prone to
Such unskillful behavior
Because they know they don’t “deserve”
A damn thing, not a favor

Not a payback, not a debt
Not one thing is expected
From anything outside which is
Why they are not affected

By misjudgement, misunderstanding
Unfair distribution
The Warrior just looks within
For all their restitution

Code of Bushidō: Honor (Meiyo)

9 May

Code of Bushidō: Honor (Meiyo)

Honor is integrity
Adherence to a code
Unimpaired and unwavered when
Others choose to goad

Honor’s not a part-time thing
No momentary lapses
In integrity when someone
Else’s peace collapses

Warrior’s will hold fast and
Honor the code they follow
With poise and grace through difficult
Times while others will wallow

Honor is a self-respect
That’s earned and can’t be bought
It cannot be stolen and to
The selfish can’t be taught

It is the courage and resolve
To make the right decision
Even when you’re not under
Anyone’s supervision

Honor is not sacrificed
To lie or cheat or steal
To take a shortcut that will make
An easier ordeal

The Warrior-Knights earned themselves
The reputation of
Being men of honor ‘cause
They held themselves above

Basic human desires
Like comfort, ease and pleasure
They knew pursuing just those things
Made men of little measure

Honor’s held in high regard
‘Cause it’s a selfless act
To sacrifice your own yearning
So that your code is backed

And it’s a virtue that lairs
And thieves cannot deny
They say “There goes a warrior
Who’s much stronger than I”

Confronted

22 Jan

“When people do not respect us we are sharply offended; yet in his private heart no man much respects himself.” ~Mark Twain

Confronted

A fascinating thing occurs
When others do confront
Ego puts up defenses
When we hear truth that’s blunt

When we’re alone, we’re well aware
We are far from perfect
But when there’s someone else around
The ego goes unchecked

Suddenly we do no wrong
And those who are candid
Make us feel with their review
Like cow being branded

We feel put on the spot and are
Afraid they know the truth
We say things like “You don’t know me!”
And start to lose our couth

The fear is that the things we think
Are most imperative
Are really insignificant
For what we need to live

I’ve heard from hundreds who have said
“Your rhymes are truth to me”
And many times they did not fill
The reader with much glee

They did not feel all warm and fuzzy
Like when they have read
A sugar-sweet one-liner where
Not one tough truth is said

You’ll never get control of your
Ego with head in sand
Confrontation need’nt be
Battled like your last stand

Take a breath and listen to
The pounding in your chest
The buzzing in your brain that’s making
You feel oh so stressed

Forget about the person that
You think has brought this on
Only for a moment pretend
That they are now gone

And look within to see the true
Culprit which brought you stress
The two-faced ego which before
When alone did confess

To you that you are not perfect
That you have made mistakes
That you are riddled with regret
And don’t have what it takes

It’s those who do not shy away
From confronting ego
That finally do break its grip
And learn, evolve and grow

They do not let it control them
Instead, it’s on their chain
Fully under control so that
Peace and grace can reign

The Fool

5 Jan

“To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.”  ~e.e. cummings, 1955

The Fool

There was a fool who worried of
What all the others thought
Their respect and acceptance was
What he constantly sought

He tucked away his own pleasures
For fear that they’d make fun
He didn’t speak his mind for fear
That all of them would shun

He fell in line and followed what
The others said was sane
Even though he couldn’t ignore
The voice in his brain

Telling him “This is not you
It’s just a guise to please
All the others so they will
Be constantly at ease”

One day this fool crossed paths with
A warrior who spoke
His mind and when others heard
They all called him a joke

They said because he walked alone
And didn’t follow suit
That he was crazy, weird, insane
A total cake of fruit

The irony was when the fool
Called the warrior one
The warrior just smiled because
Irony is fun

“Who’s the fool?” the warrior asked
“The one who shows no fears?
Or is it someone who’s afraid
Of hearing others jeers?

So they change everything they are
Their look, their mind, their goals
Just so that the other fools
Won’t rake them over coals”

The warrior then walked away
To himself still so true
“Fool!” the fool shouted at him
“You are one through and through!”

But something lingered in his mind
The warrior had peace
A calmness and strong confidence
That simply wouldn’t cease

Not with ridicule or taunts
Or accusations of
Lies, hypocrisy, no he
Was simply filled with love

With courage, passion and resolve
And more that the fool thought
The more he realized his ways
Were making him distraught

By living for approval that
He never had achieved
He saw the fool of himself that
He had completely weaved

Every time the others saw
The warrior and scoffed
And how the warrior shrugged off
Their barbs like they were soft

The fool could not help but think that
The others had it wrong
The more they mocked, the more the fool
Felt he did not belong

‘Till one day that fool stood apart
And did reveal to them
His true self, not a fool at all
So they chose to condemn

And finally he understood
That self-respect was worth
More than the combined respect
Of all the fools on Earth

Impressed

27 Dec

“Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like.” ~Will Smith

Impressed

There’s only one you must impress
And it is not your boss
It’s not your family or friends
Or the man on the cross

It isn’t strangers that you don’t
Know anything about
There’s only one you must impress
If you are to gain clout

If you are to gain some peace
And focus and resolve
When trying to impress you must
Just your own self involve

No one else can judge you or
Knows what your limits are
Better than you do yourself
And knows how very far

You can push yourself to going
When you are applied
When you focus, concentrate
And increase your short stride

“I’m impressed” from someone else
Should not make you that proud
If that voice inside of you
Says “You have not allowed

Yourself to go the extra mile
To give a little more
To push your limits even further
Than they were before”

The catch is that your voice inside
Is never satisfied
It never will say “I’m impressed”
And fill you with great pride

And that’s exactly why you should
Always pay it most heed
While others will say “Well done!” your
Voice inside says “Exceed!

Keep it up, don’t let up now!
You aren’t finished just yet
‘Impressed’ won’t happen ‘till you’re sore
And tired, drenched in sweat!”

They say we’re our own worst critics
I’d like to redefine:
I say that no one but ourselves
Can so strongly incline

Nothing but that inner voice
Can push you all the way
Past “impressed” to something more:
Fulfillment to display
