Way of the Warrior

Way of the Warrior

When Shinrai came of age, time came to plot out his life’s course
Naturally, he looked to his parents and their path’s source
Among the many maps laid out before the strapping lad
Were designs and directions taken by dear mom and dad

Which were passed on to them as well by grandma and grandpa
Passed for generations, morals, rules, beliefs and law
He glanced around at other maps laid out for his young peers
More safe and easy, beaten paths, more familiar frontiers

Many maps with many names, all promising great peace
Each one claiming to be the one way to make pain cease
As all his peers chose the same path that their parents did take
Something seemed off to Shinrai, it seemed like a mistake

Though those who drew these maps had best intentions for their kin
“Following” to Shinrai meant the quest would not begin
“Why,” Shinrai asked a colleague, “do you desire a guide?”
“‘Cause I don’t know the way!” his frazzled colleague did confide

“Perhaps not now,” Shinrai replied, “but where is all your trust
That you will find your OWN way if you are bold and robust?”
The colleague chuckled, grabbed his map and waved young Shinrai off
Belittling, dismissing, disrespecting with a scoff

“Coward,” Shinrai whispered, “EXCUSE ME?” the colleague yelled
“Coward,” Shinrai said again, “your spirit has been quelled”
The colleague spewed words of defense, but Shinrai did not hear
Just background noise like all the rest, words laced with dread and fear

As Shinrai scanned the laid out maps, one old parchment he spied
Dusty and untouched in years, all weathered, torn and dried
He picked it up and heard the warnings of his dreading mates
“Are you nuts?! If you take that path, only pain awaits!”

He dusted off the cover, “Way of the Warrior,” it read
He looked at all the cowards clutching their designs with dread
He unfolded the dusty map, but nothing was inside
No rules and no instructions, no advice to be applied

Some laughed at the sight but Shinrai understood it well
Though no direction was given, the old map did compel
He folded it back up and placed it with the other ways
“That one inspires more than all the rest,” he did appraise

Empty-handed he did leave while others warned with fright
“How will you know what to do?” Shinrai replied, “With might
With focus, with resolve, with faith in myself, iron will
By honing, training, awareness, with patience, poise and skill”

The others searched their maps for all these words Shinrai did preach
But all they found were words like “pray” and “hope,” “desire” and “reach”
They called him crazy for a time, but after many years
All of them, despite their detailed maps, shed many tears

While Shinrai blazed his own path, in control of destiny
Never frazzled by maps vows which never came to be
Good or bad, it was HIS choice, and revel it he did
Trusting and following only what his OWN heart bid

Pushed

4 Nov
PushedDid you push yourself today when ego said “I’m tired”?
Did you do what you needed instead of what’s desired?
Did you sacrifice your sweat in order to be stronger?
Did you strain and breathe harder in order to last longer?
Did you lodge a hard, swift kick right onto your own ass?
Or did you take it easy, just sit back and smoke some grass?
Did you put your feet up and take a big swig of beer
And turn on the TV and ask others to bring you cheer?
Did you sit and just consume and hope it all works out?
And then when the shit hits the fan all you will do is pout?
Because when you had chances to forge your mind into steel
All you did was take it easy and eat a big meal
Have a couple drinks, some smokes and try to feel so good
While being stressed out because things aren’t going as they should
Accountability is hard for people who don’t push
It’s much easier to blame others while sitting on your tush
The Warrior is pushed from all directions, but it pales
To their own push and that is why a Warrior prevails
‘Cause nothing that life has to throw can ever match the force
A Warrior uses to keep him or herself on course
“I wish I had your patience,” many normals tell the one
In one hundred, perhaps they would if they neglected fun
And comfort, ease, and luxury for focus and resolve
The Warrior’s not born this way, they’re built, forged and evolve
With pushes every single day, each hour, minute, second
The push is why the Warrior is one with to be reckoned

Dilution

Dilution

They ask themselves, “How come I feel so sad, so mad, so bad?”
And then they ingest substances and suddenly feel glad
Everything is right again, the world’s a better place
But quickly all that happiness dissolves without a trace
Once again they feel so sad, so mad, so bad once more
And want to know the secret of how they should wage their war
With everything that bothers them, depresses, causes pain
They search and search but always balk at the answer: abstain
The key to handling all the things that life throws in your way
Is simply, “Don’t dilute yourself,” it all leads you astray
The alcohol, the drugs, the smokes, the food, it just dilutes
Who you really are, it drags, it slows and it refutes
Human beings weigh themselves with anchors that they think
Bring them joy but truth is that it simply makes them sink
They question “Why?” and “How?” yet never see the irony
How can you be stronger? Have more grace? Awake and see?
By showing some self-discipline, by not acting so weak
By having patience and great faith and being more unique
By stepping away from the crowd that drinks and smokes and tokes
Recognizing that their way of “dealing” is a hoax
That putting something in your body to make all things right
Actually diminishes all your natural might
They ask the Warriors just what their secret is, but want
Something far less difficult, something more nonchalant
And never recognize the Warrior is pure, condensed
Undiluted, focused and prepared to go against
Any of life’s challenges, the fear, the pain, the death
Undiluted by the booze, the nicotine or meth
“I wish I had your discipline,” the normals often say
“Wishing,” just another form of dilution decay

Shame on You

24 May

“Whatever is begun in anger ends in shame.” ~Benjamin Franklin

shame
Shame On You

I see your pouty face and hear
The anger in your voice
And my only response is:
“Shame on you, that’s the wrong choice”

You whine and cry about how there’s
No choice, that you are forced
To have a boo-boo face because
Your wants were not endorsed

You think because you did not get
The thing that you desired
That you are justified, that your
Anger is now required

You think that when things do not go
Your way, you have the right
To unleash your hostility
To kick and scream and fight

Shame on you because you battle
Everything except
The only thing that is the cause
The one thing that has kept

Yourself from being patient, graceful
Having empathy
You fight the innocents but not
The real culprit of “ME”

Angry that you did not win?
The fault lays just on you
Upset it didn’t go as planned?
You’re selfish, yes that’s true

You want so much for yourself that
You have lost your perspective
You think that you are important
Not part of the collective

You dwell within your selfish thoughts
Instead of walking miles
Within the shoes of others to
Understand their own trials

They couldn’t get the job done right
So now you throw a fit?
Don’t expect this warrior
To give a single shit

Don’t expect a warrior
To tip-toe on eggshells
Instead I’ll raise my voice louder
And hammer upon bells

And tell you that you’re a shameful
Self-centred, spoiled brat
That you expose your true self with
These fits; a coward rat

You have no grace to deal with it
Because your heart just cares
About yourself and doesn’t think
About other’s affairs

No, I won’t apologize
Or say, ‘There, there, tap, tap”
My only consultation is to
Shut your selfish trap

Your mommy and daddy did you
Disservice by allowing
These kid-like temper tantrums with their
Sympathy and bowing

So now the rest must deal with a
Full grown infant who pouts
And bickers and complains and frets
And bellyaches and shouts

Shame on you for lack of strength
For lack of self control
Shame on you for being such
A small-minded, weak soul

Self-Control, Self-Respect & Courage

Developing Discipline

23 Oct

Developing Discipline

How does one develop, raise
And strengthen discipline?
Self-restraint, the power to
Control, endure, to win?

Discipline is key to conquering
So many vices
But cost of discipline is the
Unlikeliest of prices

Discipline is not “gotten”
It’s already possessed
It is a trait with which you were
From birth already blessed

But it is buried underneath
The pleasures and the bliss
When it is time to have some fun
It’s what folks do dismiss

“How do I get disciplined
Like you?” some folks will ask
“You don’t get disciplined,” I say
“There’s no training or task

Discipline is what is left
When other things are lost
Discipline comes with great pain
Suffering and exhaust”

It is uncovered when your shoulders
Feel like great big spikes
Are stabbing, twisting into them
Two sudden lightning strikes

You learn just how much discipline
You have when both your knees
Are weak and you feel that you could
Be knocked down by a breeze

Your discipline is not a choice
But comes quite automatic
When you have had a few too many
Things that were dramatic

Happen in your life, the loss
Of parents, friends, a child
Losing these pieces of you
Keep you from getting riled

The trials of life will chip away
Like sculptor with a stone
It chips away at all the flesh
And meat ‘till it hits bone

And that is where your discipline
Resided all along
The iron will enabling
To be graceful and strong

*Loss* is the “big secret” to
Discovering that power
It doesn’t matter how many
Great books that you devour

It doesn’t matter how many
Great mentors instruct you
Discipline is not something
You get, gain or accrue

Maybe when you lose your health
You’ll stop having that smoke
Maybe when your heart’s diseased
And you’re told soon you’ll croak

You’ll have the discipline to eat
Foods much lower in salt
And have the strength to abstain from
The things which are at fault

Maybe when you’ve lost much more
Than most people endure
All the things which you’re addicted
To will lose allure

Wish you luck with conquering
Those vices that you fight
May you endure great loss and then
Finally see the light

Honor Code

20 Jun

Honor Code

Honor is a tough concept
To adhere to a code
That no one can enforce, for many
Folks it does forebode

To be accountable to self
To one’s own set of rules
One that you form on your own
Not one that’s taught in schools

To think a little deeper and
Decide what’s right and wrong
Only those self-disciplined
Focused, patient and strong

Have a chance to write that code
And stick to it each day
Only Warriors do not
Their honor code betray
