The Myth of Multitasking: How Phones Destroy Focus

Humanly Possible

Humanly Possible

“Only human” people say and think we’re all the same
That when it comes to discipline, we all must have low aim
One person gets discouraged and thinks, “No one could succeed!”
They think that their own shortcomings apply to the whole breed

“Only human” I have heard until it’s made me sick
“Only human” from the lazy, close-minded and thick
“Only human” from the ones who grew up with excess
“Only human” from those who think only God can bless

I recognized my shortcomings both in body and mind
Before my grey hairs had grown in but unlike most, declined
To excuse all my weakness as the limits of my race
Instead of shrugging, “Only human” like a weak disgrace

I sought out other humans, both alive and from the past
Whose strength, intensity, resolve and fortitude was vast
I did the work and hunted them, pursued without relent
I sniffed them out by tracking their indomitable scent

And while the lazy sensitives grew wider and more frail
And followed other wimps, I found the WARRIORS to hail
Samurai and knights, soldiers, mystics, a Savior too
Who kept his GRACE while being KILLED (“only human” like YOU)

Time and time again I found these humans who did hone
Their minds to steel, bodies to rock and fire in their bone
I saw what lack of passion did: love handles and a gut
Excess making body weak and mind stuck in a rut

And I compared that laziness and excess to the Lords
The Warriors, the Kings, the humans who all worked towards
Pushing limits, being more and choosing what they feel
Refusing to give up control, to whine, to cry, to kneel

“Only human” say the ones who sit and wait and think
“This is it” and never push their limits to their brink
But there are some who chose to stand, to run and to believe
“Human possibility” is not something to grieve

Self-Control, Self-Respect & Courage

Weak Stick

26 Jan

“The cigarette does the smoking – you’re just the sucker.”  ~Author Unknown

Weak Stick

A lot of traits do come to mind
When I see smokers pull
A cigarette out from a box
And take a deep breath full

Of chemicals, carcinogens
And nicotine and tar
Here’s the picture that they paint
When sucking that cigar

I see a lazy person who
Wants to feel better fast
I see an futile person who
Can’t learn that it won’t last

I see a selfish person who
Pollutes the air we breathe
I see a full grown baby who
Still has the need to teethe

I see a foolish person who
Keeps wasting all their dough
To paint their lungs a darker shade
And make the tumor grow

I see a weak person who doesn’t
See the strength inside
I see a coward who searches
For close places to hide

I see a corpse that’s wasting time
And money and the love
Of all their friends and family
And maybe God above

I see an ingrate piss away
Their health when there’s so many
Who’d give the world to have it back
‘Cause they do not have any

I see a slave with no courage
To break free from their chains
A wimp who can’t withstand withdrawal
Who can’t endure the pains

A spoiled rotten little brat
Who thinks life’s all about
Comfort, pleasure, luxury
Taking the easy route

I challenge every smoker to
Accomplish this one feat
Next time that you get a craving
Before you light that treat

Throw it on the ground and crush
That weak stick with your heel
And throw the rest down there as well
And give them the same deal

Don’t cry about how much they cost
You’ve burned a lot before
Makes no difference if they’re in
Your lungs or on the floor

Crush those weak sticks and then wait
For those shakes to begin
Instead of looking for a fix
Focus and look within

Concentrate and clear your mind
And take it like the rest
Don’t tremble and cry for help
Stand up and beat your chest!

Growl, show some backbone and
Control your weakened mind
Stop being so aloof and
To your own strength so blind

Weaker ones than you have quit
And they put you to shame
Every time you feel the sudden
Urge to light that flame

Lazy, futile, selfish, baby
Foolish, weak and coward
One step closer to a corpse
With every stick devoured

Ingrate, slave, a wimp and spoiled
Rotten little brat
Who doesn’t realize where the
True calming force is at

And sensitive because they never
Want to hear that they
Are doing anything wrong, but
They don’t use that ash tray

Take a look at your sidewalk
Next time you take a stroll
Count the cigarette butts that
You see on your patrol

Then say smokers aren’t lazy
Aloof and big ingrates
Foolish, weak and cowardly
And all these other traits

“But hey, I smoke and I always
Put my butt in the trash!”
Good for you, now go collect
All of your drifting ash

Repercussions

Repercussions

Some may think that I’ve got an
Inflated view when I
Take a look at myself and
Admit my strength is high

But don’t mistake me for someone
Who’s perfect in all ways
Off the road of discipline
This poet sometimes strays

The difference between warriors
Who grant themselves a “cheat”
And people with no self-control
Is that we don’t mistreat

Our bodies by abusing them
Without the thought of what
The repercussions will do and
Not let that door be shut

When you make the wrong choice for
Your health, you must accept
What you have to do in order
For it to be kept

If you have an extra large
Order of fries for lunch
You better make some time tonight
And a few sit-ups crunch

If you smoke, you should just quit
But if you lack the will
At least look in to Mullein Tea
So that your lungs don’t fill

With all the garbage that your cig
Pumps in to turn them black
Exercise and fresh air too
Will save you from the hack

And if your vice is that too often
You procrastinate
You better cancel some events
To keep your schedule straight

You don’t get to waste your time
And not get your work done
But still go out to parties with
Your cohorts and have fun

Repercussions tell you to
Pick up the phone and say
“Sorry, I can’t make it ’cause
I dragged my ass all day”

Repercussions whisper in
Your ear when you ignite
A cigarette by telling you
About your lung’s black plight

And they grab you by the gut
When you’ve had too much food
Reminding you how much more time
On treadmill you’ve accrued

I’m not perfect, never was
Today I stuffed my face
Twice as much food than I needed
So now to erase

The extra calories that I
Don’t need to do my grind
I’ll amp up my workout tonight
And kick my own behind

I’ll pass on having something good
For dinner like a steak
And definitely no dessert
Like ice cream, pie or cake

When repercussions make my meal
It’s salad every time
If you cannot pay the price
Then don’t commit the crime
