Sick

28 Nov

“I enjoy convalescence. It is the part that makes the illness worth while.” ~George Bernard Shaw

Sick

This warrior is sick today
Seems that I’ve caught the flu
No, I will not whine and cry
Because the time was due

I have been very grateful for
The health that I’ve enjoyed
One cannot expect life to be
Of sickness devoid

Speaking of your aches and pains
Will not do any good
Your effect on other people
Should be understood

You don’t do yourself or others
Any service if
All you do is moan about
How you are sick and stiff

Always keep in mind that it
Will soon have run its course
Illness isn’t something that
Must be met with remorse

Use it as a chance to see
How much health means to you
Run a little further when
You are over that flu

Walk an extra mile when
You have beaten that cold
Hit the weight room harder when
That fever’s lost its hold

Don’t be so dramatic and
Just cry of agony
Bide your time and be patient
Until you’re illness-free

And when you are, resume your fight
By giving it your all
Sickness isn’t more than just
A momentary stall

Workout Whiners

“Stop whining!” ~Arnold Schwarzenegger

Workout Whiners

“Ow, my arms are sore today
‘Cause of P90X”
So many do complain as they
Rub sore muscles and flex

Why are there so many trainers
Who instruct their pupils
On how to get bodies in shape
But not how to tone scruples?

The exerciser is driven
With goal of looking ripped
But rarely are they told to be
Of soreness nondescript

It doesn’t do them any good
To cry about their aches
Keeping your mouth shut about
The soreness is what makes

A person grow much stronger and
More disciplined as well
The point is not just to endure
It’s to have grace through hell

Look at all the great athletes
From years gone by ‘till now
How many of them complained
Of soreness and said “ow”?

How many great boxers, bikers
Football, tennis players
Whined about their workouts and
Were pessimistic sayers?

Keep in mind next time you’re coached
If they forget to teach
That in addition to hard work
It’s vital not to screech

It’s part of mental discipline
To absorb all the strain
Take comfort that it will pass
And don’t complain of pain

And for those who will respond with
“It is quite good to mention
Anything that’s bothering
For the sake of prevention”

You’ve missed the point, this topic’s not
About what you sound like
When you’re throwing weights around
Or riding on that bike

It is about the little aches
That we complain about
The little soreness that we could
Accept but choose to pout

Awakened muscles used for the
First time in quite a while
Of course they’re going to protest and
Treat pain sensors hostile

“Stop whining” as Arnold said
And so many before
The soreness in your muscles is
Part of the workout chore

Misery Recovery

Misery Recovery

Many of my writes contain
An upbeat, hopeful tone
But there is a much darker mood
To which I’m also prone

I’m not perfect and don’t always
Feel very high on life
Case in point: yesterday was
A day that caused me strife

One thing in particular
Can be named as the root:
My selfish own desires which
Became my main pursuit

I’m not talking materials
Like cars or clothes or toys
Such things never lead to any
Lasting timeless joys

I’m speaking of intangibles
A body with no pain
One that could keep up with me
And actually sustain

Other things like wanting others
To not be selfish
Wanting them to not just worry
About their own wish

Wanting people to just see
How ego holds them back
How it skews a harmless phrase
Into a cold attack

Wanting people to be grateful
For all that they’ve got
Not just being complacent
And thinking they have squat

Wanting them to have no fear
And not hold others down
Discouraging the swimmers, shouting
“You will surely drown!”

One day later, now I see
The cause of my distress
The simple reason is one that’s
Quite simple to address:

I wanted, very simply put
A craving, wish or need
And anytime you think about
Your own comfort and greed

Anytime you wish something
Would make your life more smooth
Anytime you wish you had
Something to lull and soothe

You’ll just end up with misery
Because that’s not your task
Ever notice selfish people
In joy do not bask?

But those who give all of themselves
The people who inspire
Are radiant with love and have
So many that admire

Let go of your wants and just
Accept the things that are
You cannot draw blood from a stone
Or light from a dark star

Try your best and pay attention
To things you can do
And for the things you can’t, simply
Let go and let pass through
