Screw Ups

Screw Ups

We’re told that should stand by those
Who are having it rough
But there’s a point where even Warriors
Say “That’s enough”

We show support and have hope much
Longer than most would last
But there’s a point where patience should
Be a thing of the past

And that’s with Screw Ups, people who
Aren’t trying very hard
People with ingratitude
Who simply disregard

The caring and concern that their
Friends and family show
Once again, the Warrior
Says what causes most woe

“What you’re doing hasn’t,
Doesn’t, and won’t work for me
I’m letting go ‘cause you’re a Screw Up
Of highest degree”

The Warrior lets go and stops
Letting Screw Ups frustrate
They don’t hold animosity
Or any kind of hate

They simply give up hope which is
An act most cannot do
We want to think that everyone
Could improve and come through

The Warrior’s a realist
And knows a truth that’s bleak:
Some people are permanently
Selfish, scared and weak

The Warrior has the courage
To let the Screw Ups go
They must fend for themselves if they
Do stand a chance to grow

And Warriors are weary when
A Screw Up says they’ve changed
They know that transformation won’t come
From being estranged

It comes from striving, pondering
From giving, sacrifice
It comes from letting go of self
Which is a heavy price

That most Screw Ups just cannot pay
Because “self” is their life
They place their own happiness before
That of a husband, wife

A son, a daughter or parent
A stranger or a friend
Quit on Screw Ups and your time
On better causes spend

God’s Hands

15 Mar

“The buck stops here.” ~President Harry S. Truman

God’s Hands

I hear a lot of people say
“I’ll leave it in God’s hands”
They pass the buck and hope that He
Deals with our life’s demands

Another trouble comes around
And off it goes to God
Another package sent right up
That’s screwed up, broken, flawed

“What is this? Some turmoil?
God’s hands still have some room
He has plenty of space for all
My misery and doom”

The Warrior’s relationship
With He who did create
Is one that is a bit different
Than sending just their hate

The Warrior is well aware
That there’s a higher power
But they will never pass the buck
Wash hands of it and cower

The Warrior is filled with strength
Because they know their source
They’re forged from something paramount
An immovable force

They are derived from One who can’t
Be controlled or destroyed
And being a supreme power
It never does avoid

Troubles, hardships, struggles, tests
Annoyances and stress
This Creator does not hand off
Instead it does address

And so the Warrior’s inspired
To face those same demands
Bravely by themselves and not
Pass it to their God’s hands

They feel assured to know that their
Creator watches on
But they can handle it themselves
With their own grace and brawn

Never will you hear a Warrior
Pass any buck
“Give me that!” they say and snatch
Grasp, grapple, grip or pluck

Whatever is the task at hand
And clasp it firmly tight
The Warrior knows each conquest
Bring them to a new height

“Don’t worry, I’ve got this one”
The Warrior tells God
You’ve done enough for me, and for
That I greatly applaud

But now it’s time for me to stand
To rise up and to deal
It’s easier to kick ass if
I stand rather than kneel”

Move On

23 Oct

Move On

For warriors the words “I quit”
Are never, ever spoken
But there’s another phrase we should
Utter when wills are broken

Not our own, the will of a
Warrior can’t be cracked
I’m speaking of the ones we try
To inspire and impact

Rest assured, my warriors
There will be those who can’t
Reap any of your wisdom
‘Cause their ego won’t grant

Any idea that did not
Originate with them
Words can’t reach their hearts unless
They came from their brain stem

I’ve watched in awe as people have
Argued against the fact
That we all have the power to
Triumph over what’s lacked

That focus, training, concentration
Effort and resolve
Is the only way to grow
To adapt and evolve

“Yeah, but” is the way they start
And that’s enough for me
To wash my hands and realize
They’re not a good trainee

They want a comfortable life and
Don’t want to have to sweat
They want all of the world’s joys but
Don’t want to pay the debt

They beg the Creator to take it
Easy on them, please
Warriors instead live by
The wise words of Bruce Lee’s:

“Do not pray for easy lives”
The Dragon once did say
“Pray for the strength to endure
Difficult ones today.”

If you’re a warrior and you
Stand before someone who
Doesn’t have the will to hear
Your words and follow through

Do not fear that you’re quitting
You’re not, you’re moving on
Your strength is needed other places
Where it will help spawn

Courage and resolve within
The people who are able
To want to try to grow in peace
And make their stresses stable

Move on ‘cause you’re wasting precious
Time as well as air
Move on to other people who
Are passionate and care

Let go of egotistical
Self-centered people that
Are too set in their ways to ever
Be moved by your chat

Move on with confidence in knowing
That you tried your best
Head up, chest out and take comfort
In knowing you addressed

A simple-minded person who
Can’t find the time to try
Who’d rather bitch and whine and sob
And fret and stress and cry

And wait for someone else to come
And fix all their issues
Warriors are well aware
You’ll need more than tissues

You’ll need to see that what you need
Is not the help of God
It’s not a friend or two or three
Or an entire squad

What you need is already
Within you, but it’s hard
So for the ones who don’t like it
The warriors discard

They leave behind the ones who drag
Without any remorse
And if a seed’s been planted, then
We’ll see you down the course

Shrug

9 Sep

Shrug

One act that you’ll never see
A warrior commit
Is shrugging, the symbol of those
Who want to say “I quit”

The shrug is often coupled by
A half-hearted fake smirk
“Whatever” is the battle-cry
Of those who can’t stand work

“Meh” is something else they say
To show they are aloof
Maybe even roll their eyes
As more symbolic proof

That they just don’t give a damn
“Whatever,” shrug it off
“Doesn’t matter anyway”
Is what they often scoff

But warriors know better ‘cause
It matters every day
Every single little thing
In every single way

The only time a warrior
Shrugs is when it’s with weights
Sets of ten or twelve of heavy
Cold cast iron plates

A warrior does not half-smirk
They bear their teeth and beam
Next to “meh” and “whatever”
Their phrases are extreme

“Never!” is a common one
And “I can!” is as well
“Just do it!” is a classic
That still makes effort swell

A warrior does not roll eyes
They focus straight ahead
They do not quit the task at hand
They “just do it” instead

They never will apologize
For being so intense
Because the other option is
For them just too damn dense

Shrugging, quitting, saying “meh”
And not giving a crap
Barely having enough will
To muster a golf clap

Telling all “there’s nothing that
I can do” with their shoulders
While the warriors dig deep
And by themselves, move boulders

Maybe next time that a shrugger
Wants to “meh” and sigh
Instead, they should try baring teeth
And fire in their eye

Stoke the flame of their spirit
And let intensity
Overcome that task and leave it
Drifting as debris

Or just shrug and then say “Whatever”
Then sit down and veg
And roll their eyes at warriors
And their “just do it” pledge

Try Harder

1 Sep

Try Harder

When you try your best and it doesn’t work
And you lose your cool and then go berserk
Try harder

When you make a plan that’s not in the cards
When you’re tackled short of just a few yards
Try harder

When you get a message and you think it can wait
And you put off responding ‘till a later date
Try harder

When you’ve had a bad day that’s pushed you to the brink
And you try to find solace by grabbing a drink
Try harder

When you’re mad at someone ’cause they screwed up once more
And you unload on them with your vengeful roar
Try harder

When you know you should go for a jog or a run
But you stay on the couch because it’s more fun
Try harder

When you’re asked for your help but you tell them “I can’t”
Because you’re so busy you’ve no time to grant
Try harder

When you see something weird and make fun with jokes
‘Cause your personal tastes are not like those folks
Try harder

When you throw in the towel and whimper “I quit!”
‘Cause you can’t bare to take another big hit
Try harder

When you come home from work and just sit on the couch
And spend your evening being a tired grouch
Try harder

When someone you love doesn’t get your attention
When their thoughtfulness doesn’t get any mention
Try harder

When you read or see something that brings up your mood
But you don’t share with others so they’ll feel renewed
Try harder

Finish It!

26 Aug

Finish It

Being someone who works hard
At many different things
I’ll often get a person who
Comes up to me and sings

“I’ve got an idea that I think
May be right up your alley!”
The problem is they don’t stick to
It until the finale

If someone gave me a nickel
For every great idea
I’d have enough to purchase both of
North and South Korea

They talk about their master plan
Excitement in their eyes
Strictly focused on the joy
That will come with the prize

But somewhere down along the road
Towards the finish line
Things don’t always go so smooth
What’s this, a steep incline?

An effort that must be expended?
Sweat that must be poured?
Oh no! Some hard work before you
Can claim your sweet reward!

I’m not the brightest guy around
I’m not the wisest either
Most talented in my field
Or passionate, I’m neither

The key to my success has been
That I will never quit
While everyone is tapping out
I just will not submit

I haven’t finished everything
That I’ve ever conceived
But the ratio of all
The things that I’ve achieved

Is high enough to make me proud
Of all the things I’ve finished
One or two things in limbo
Don’t make me feel diminished

But most of the ideas I hear
Don’t ever leave the ground
It starts with so much excitement
But then I have to hound

And pester and ask, “What’s the word?
Have you done any work?”
More often than not I hear
That they have had to shirk

Their wonderful idea because
They’ve been extremely ‘busy’
This pattern of vigor and then
Indifference makes me dizzy

Hold on to that feeling of
Excitement at the start
You’re going to need it all the way
Because it will depart

As you find out it takes time
And effort to complete
This wonderful idea you have
This monumental feat

Sorry if I come off crass
But I’ve just had my fill
Of great ideas that people have
Before they climb the hill

I’ve had too many conversations
Where I ask about
That great idea that never flew
Because someone bailed out

“Finish it!” I can’t resist
From saying anymore
“Shut your mouth and move your legs
Until they’re nice and sore”

‘Cause anyone can talk about
A great idea that came
It’s the ones who finish it
That will get the acclaim
