The Only Time

16 Nov

It’s not very humble of me to say it, but I’m I’m very generous. I was raised to always offer help without waiting to be asked, and never expect anything in return. I’m a gift giver as well, and when I give, I never expect anything in return. HOWEVER, what I’ve observed for most of my life is that a majority of people aren’t immediately accepting of these kinds of gestures of thoughtfulness and caring. Some genuinely didn’t want to inconvenience me by taking up my time (it’s amazing how many people feel as though they’re a burden on others) and the ugly truth is that many of them are too selfish to allow another person to be selfless. One of my best friends growing up was an extremely cheap & selfish person who was always worried about “owing” me whenever I would give a gift such as on a birthday or Christmas, even though I made it clear I expected nothing in return. I’ve come to realize that even if you strive to be selfless and serve others, a lot of people won’t take you up on your gesture, and even discourage it to soothe their own conscience. It’s then and only then that warriors don’t care, and do what they feel in their hearts is right anyway.

The Only Time

The passion of a warrior
Is always paramount
They never utter, “I don’t care”
Except on one account:

Often times when we do go
The extra mile for
Another to do something nice
That person will implore

“You shouldn’t have, I can’t accept
Don’t worry, I decline”
The warrior will not retract
And say, “Ok, that’s fine”

It’s when another won’t welcome
A gesture of goodwill
That warriors say, “I don’t care
I’m offering it still”

The world is filled with selfish people
Who offer so little
Because the few times when we give
Most people just belittle

They don’t appreciate or they
Think the price is too high
The gesture is revoked which leaves
The giver asking “Why?”

“Why should I offer my help?
Why should I strive to dare?
Why should I go out on limbs?
Why should I even care?”

ALWAYS care except for when
Someone won’t let you give
In selfless service is how we
Were all designed to live

The only time we should not care
Is when someone says, “No
I cannot accept this from you
Too much will I then owe

And even if there is no debt
The cost to you’s too great”
A warrior won’t let someone
Diffuse their selfless trait

“I don’t care,” is what they say
Do with it as you please
It’s no concern of mine if my
Caring causes unease

Throw it in the garbage or
Sell it or give away
The gesture’s what’s important, not
The reply that you say”

Many will not let you give
While asking nothing back
Their selfish hearts won’t understand
How you yourself do lack

The need to even up, pay back
To make everything square
So when they try to hold you back
Just tell them, “I don’t care”

Christmas Warriors

Christmas Warriors

Christmas is upon us and
There’s cheer within the air
It’s the only time of year
Most people seem to care

Smiles are given readily
And no one walks away
Without a kind greeting of, “Have
A Merry Christmas Day!”

But ever stopped to wonder why
So many are so nice?
Why everyone is friendly instead
Of greeting with ice?

The truth is that as humans, we
Prefer to follow trends
We feel the Christmas spirit ‘cause
We’re copying our friends

And strangers that we see around
It’s easy to feel joy
When everyone around you does
Their best not to annoy

So then we have to ask ourselves
Who started this here trend?
Answer: Christmas Warriors
Who all refused to bend

The people who put their trees up
Two months ago and heard
Most people just scoff and say
“Already? How absurd!”

The people who stayed excited
Despite the rolling eyes
“Bah humbug!” and all other ways
That people would chastise

Take a moment to give thanks
To warriors who started
All the cheer we follow now
It’s them who first imparted

They didn’t let the regular
Aloof demeanor quell
The Christmas spirit in their hearts
Instead, they let it swell

So for the Christmas Warriors
Who bring that spirit back
Every single year and are
Greeted with only flack

I’d like to give my gratitude
For sticking by their passion
Even though November’s not
When Christmas is in fashion

Thank you for beginning this
Good will that we all feel
Thanks for leading all of us
With your great Christmas zeal

Birthday Warrior

Birthday Warrior

I do not dread the knowledge that
Another year has passed
Those who wish to not get older
And act so aghast

When their age goes up a year
Make both my eyebrows raise
They don’t seem to be grateful for
Three hundred sixty-five days

They groan and moan about how they
Are losing all their youth
They just lament because they’re getting
“Too long in the tooth”

And let the wrinkles, grey and aches
Blind them from the real gift
A present that each year gives this
Warrior quite a lift:

I’m older, I have just survived
Another year on Earth
I’ve met more challenges and I’ve
Increased my strength and worth

People tried to steal my joy
But I turned back their raid
I walked headlong into danger
While others were afraid

Confronted selfish, ugly people
That most did avoid
Watched plans all go straight to shit
Without getting annoyed

Looking back on the past year
I have no swell of pride
Because that is a trait that Warriors
Do not abide

I simply am content that I
Served my duty in life
I served some strangers
Enemies, my family and wife

And will do so this coming year
The candles on the cake
Should not be mourned, they’re simply a
Reminder you’re awake

You’re still alive, you’re still breathing
Your mission still goes on
Blow them out and continue
To show your grace and brawn

Happy Birthday, King of Kings

25 Dec

“What is Christmas?  It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future.  It is a fervent wish that every cup may overflow with blessings rich and eternal, and that every path may lead to peace.”  ~Agnes M. Pahro

Happy Birthday, King of Kings

Happy Birthday, King of Kings
Today we honor you
A day that peace, benevolence
Good will and hope renew

We give each other presents because
Many don’t know how
To show we care with words so we
Use our gifts to endow

All our love and gratitude
To ones that we hold dear
Embarrassment is not something
A warrior does fear

Christmas is one of the few
Times of the year that we
Believe that words speak louder than
Actions to high degree

So when a gift is given, warriors
Will all make sure
Intentions behind their gesture
Are in no way obscure

“I love you,” “I appreciate,”
“I cherish,” “I respect”
Warriors aren’t afraid to
Acknowledge and connect

Let your guard down and be honest
With your cherished ones
Show your brothers, sisters,
Mothers, fathers, daughters, sons

Wives and boyfriends, girlfriends, nieces
Nephews, grandparents
Uncles, aunts and all the rest
That your love is immense

It’s all about serving the King
And the path that he laid
May that path be one that’s never
Diverged from or strayed

Peaceful Christmas

24 Dec

“I do like Christmas on the whole…. In its clumsy way,
it does approach Peace and Goodwill.  But it is clumsier every year.”  ~E.M. Forster

Peaceful Christmas

Merry Christmas, everyone!
I hope it’s filled with joy
But warriors are realistic
And know some annoy

Many waited until now
To get their shopping done
Recall my rhyme on consequences
It won’t be much fun

You’ve chosen to put it off ‘till
The very last minute
No complaining or frustrations
Or throwing a fit

Breath real deep as you brave all
The madness at the mall
Accept the situation that
You create when you stall

Many will have family
Come by for Christmas feast
And if you never have parties
Your stress will be increased

Recognize you’ll fall to level
Of your training now
Of course you cannot handle it
When they all come for chow

You cannot have a get-together
Only once a year
And expect all day to feel
Peaceful, joyous and cheer

Everything won’t go exactly
As you’ve planned today
Let it go and just allow
Things to flow as they may

Keep in mind the reason for
All of our celebrations
For presents and for all your guests
Let go your expectations

It isn’t about you at all
This day’s for something more
This day’s your opportunity
To show that you adore

All your friends and family
And others on the Earth
This is how the warrior
Honors the Savior’s birth

A symbol of pure selflessness
An icon of pure love
Embodiment of acceptance
From the Lord up above

Remember that when something threatens
To disrupt your peace
On your Christmas day, all those
Annoyances release

And don’t forget to keep it up
On 26th as well
Let it be a launching pad
For training to propel

And if you keep it up for an
Entire year, you’ll see
Just how peaceful your next Christmas
Will happen to be

                                         ~Merry Christmas, warriors!

To get discounted cheer!

Lots of toys and gadgets that
Have been priced way too high
Are now on sale but we warn you:
There’s limited supply!

You’ll have to come down early and
Wait outside in the cold
There won’t be any rain checks or
Placing items on hold!

When we open, you will have
To rush through our front doors
Shoving past the other patrons
To get what is yours!

You’ll have to shuffle very quickly
Past the other buyers
Who are just as focused as you
On getting their desires!

Hopefully you’ll get there first
And beat them to your treasure
It’s every man and women for
Themselves and their own pleasure!

Sorry if you didn’t get
To that TV in time
But so far selfishness is still
Not considered a crime

Hopefully you can find something
Else we’ve got on sale
It would be quite a shame to wait
In line to no avail

But don’t worry, it’s still much fun
To come out and take part
In all the madness of buying
Cheap presents from the heart!

And we must say, you bring joy to
Us sellers on sale days
By doing your impression of
Some rats loose in a maze!

It’s entertaining to see you
With flyers in your hands
Trying hard to satisfy
Those material demands!

Because it isn’t Christmas ‘till
The gifts are bought and wrapped
Once you’re in the maze, you can’t
Get out, no sir, you’re trapped!

So pick up something that’s on sale
For that special someone
A mother, father, husband, wife,
Daughter, niece, nephew, son!

Buy it just to show you care
And save yourself some cash
All it’s going to cost you is
Your patience as you dash!

Birthday

10 Nov

Birthday

A birthday is one day out of
Three hundred sixty-five
When people take a moment to
Notice that you’re alive

People that you haven’t heard
From in weeks, months or years
Suddenly make an effort
To send their joy and cheers

Well wishes because we’re told
That when someone was born
Is the one day of the year
That we should all adorn

That person with our honesty
Our caring, gratitude
To let them know directly without
Having to elude

At risk of sounding ungrateful
To those who drop a line
And wish a Happy Birthday, let me
Try to disentwine

The day that I was delivered
From my dear mother’s womb
From the single day of year
Where everyone does bloom

And stop and take a moment to
Give thanks and send their love
I’m starting to think that for some
It’s more a routine’s shove

How often do you call up
A friend or family member
Right out of the blue and tell them
That you do remember

All of the great memories
That both of you have shared?
Or do you wait ‘till their birthday
To show them that you cared?

Is it weird for you to say
“I love you” if it’s not
The same day that the doctor slapped
Their ass and tied the knot?

Is it awkward for you to
Wish them well for their sake
Unless there are wrapped presents and
Lit candles on a cake?

When was the last time you made
An effort to connect
And didn’t wait for a birthday
To pay all your respect?

This warrior poet can’t help
But think that birthday’s are
Just another holiday
From Hallmark and on par

With Christmas, Easter, New Year’s and
Mother’s and Father’s Day
One day of the year we’re told
That it’s time to display

Our genuine affection to
The ones that we care for
Hallmark doesn’t think for me
I know I can do more

Warriors think for themselves
And so for my close friends
And family, this warrior
Won’t follow Hallmark’s trends

I do not care what day it is
Because the time is now
Regardless of the date, I take
This moment to avow:

I wish you all the best in life
I wish you strength and peace
I hope your stresses will shrink and
Your patience will increase

Happy Today, warriors
You all have immense worth
Now aren’t you glad I didn’t wait
Until your day of birth?
