Welcome Back!

18 Nov

Welcome Back!

I’ve always made an effort to keep
In contact with friends
But sometimes that constant effort
Feels lopsided and ends

There have been many who, through years
Have only waited for
Me to put the first foot forward
And walk through the door

“Welcome back!” I hear them say
When I broadcast again
“Haven’t seen or heard from you
Since, oh, I don’t know when!”

But I don’t feel like I’ve been gone
I’ve been here all along
Though they think I have been silent
I’ve been singing my song

The vast majority to which
I speak to will reply
“Welcome back!” because they’re so
Used to saying goodbye

But there’s a handful of true friends
Who do reciprocate
And never give a “Welcome back!”
Because they do not wait

They never wonder, “Where you been?”
Because they make the call
Because they send the note
No matter how minor or small

They are the Alex’s and Sue’s
The Richard’s and Gab-May’s
The ones who do not just reply
They’re warriors who say

“Hello!’ and are not just an audience
Waiting for more
They never give a “Welcome back!”
Because they don’t ignore

The effort that it takes to be
A true friend and maintain
To nurture, sustain, prolong and
No fear enters their brain

No doubt if they should bother and
No shyness to speak up
No laziness to take a drive
And chat over a cup

I do appreciate the “Welcome Back!”’s
That I receive
But know that silently I say
Each time, “I didn’t leave”

Still here, still breathing
Still pounding my warrior chest
Still conquering my pain, still pondering
Still feeling blessed

Still singing, still snarling, still showing
My fierce razor fangs
My feather quill still writes and my
Steel sword still swings and clangs

I simply take a side step and
Remove myself from stage
Still here, just not under spotlight
Off to the side I wage

So ask yourself, next time you tell
An old friend, “Welcome back!”
Were they really gone or did you
Not pick up the slack?

Are you a friend who doesn’t wait
Or audience on hold
Do you wait and say, “Welcome back!”
Or do you act more bold?

You Are Loved

17 Nov

You Are Loved

When someone tries to make you feel
As though you do not matter
When someone criticizes what you do
Instead of flatter

When someone tells you to give up
And that you won’t succeed
When someone tries to make your faith
Within yourself recede

When someone who could help chooses
To not show empathy
When someone who could ease your pain
Instead hurts more with glee

When many band together and show
No thought or concern
When all those souls who could have helped
Do nothing except spurn

Remember you are loved by those
Who aren’t made of cold stone
Remember you are loved and that
You are never alone

You are loved by family
Who share your blood and bone
You are loved by friends who care
By picking up the phone

You are loved by survivors
Who know life isn’t fair
You are loved by warriors
Who boldly, bravely dare

You are loved by me because
I know the pain you feel
And since you are a warrior
You’ll endure it with zeal

And most importantly remember
You are loved by YOU
For all the strength and poise and grace
And courage you imbue

The Scorpion and the Frog

16 Nov

The Scorpion and the Frog

There was a frog who swam along
The river one fine day
He came upon a scorpion
On the shore in dismay

“What seems to be the trouble?”
The frog asked with some concern
“I need to cross the river!”
The sharp-tip tailed one did yearn

“Would you be so kind and give
A ride upon your back?”
The frog thought, then thought twice, then thrice
And cautiously said back:

“I’m not so sure that would be wise
I fear that you would sting
And I would sink and drown since I’m not
Much for snorkeling

“Don’t be silly!” the scorpion said
“I’d sink along with you!
I can’t swim or breathe submerged
To do so, I’D be through!”

“Hmmm,” the frog thought to himself
“That’s true, you’d drown as well
Ok, I’m always pleased to help
Climb on board for a spell!”

“Thank you!” scorpion said with joy
And creeped upon the back
‘Bout halfway ‘cross the river
The passenger did attack

The tail snapped down and stinger pierced
The frog and he went numb
“Why?” he asked with shock and sank
Surprised at the outcome

“Because,” the scorpion replied
With apathy so cold
“I am a scorpion, it’s in my nature
In my mould”

“But you’ll drown too!” the frog gurgled
As they hit river bed
“It’s what I do, I cannot change”
And soon they both were dead

In Loving Shape

15 Nov

In Loving Shape

You cannot run a marathon
Unless you’ve done the training
No one’s won an election
Without lots of campaigning

You cannot be well versed on topics
Without much research
Your soul or spirit cannot grow
If confined to one church

In all aspects of life we can’t
Do things we hope to do
Unless we do the work to get
In shape to see it through

Which brings us to the people who
Wish they could show more love
Despite their wants they do not have
Much training to show of

And how does one prepare themselves
To love all selflessly?
By loving themselves just as much
To very same degree

Much of loving lies in caring
Protecting, defending
How can one love others when
To themselves they aren’t tending?

How can someone who abuses
Their bodies with drugs
Or alcohol or cigarettes
Hope to give loving hugs?

How can someone who slowly
Poisons their veins with junk
Clogs their arteries and makes
Their heart strain, lurch and clunk

Hope to care for someone else
And rise to do what’s needed
To take care when their own advice
Goes constantly unheeded?

How can someone not in shape
From loving their own body
Caring for it, protecting
So that it isn’t shoddy

Hope to be in any kind
Of shape to love another?
If you can’t help yourself, how much
Can you do for your brother?

Your sister? Mother? Father? Friend?
Your children and your pets?
The most love you can give is the
Same as your body gets

So show some love and make the choice
That’s not rooted in craving
Physically and mentally
We should ourselves be saving

Not torturing ourselves over
Regrets from the past
And not consuming things that have
Bad effects that will last

Get in loving shape by caring
For your own well-being
Then you’ll start to see your love
For others fully freeing

Spread The Fear

3 Oct
Spread the Fear

The radio turns on to wake you
For the next work day
The first thing that you hear is how
The world is in dismay

People being run over
By cars that fled the scene
Another child missing and
Another murdered teen

A cop shot down by bad guys while
Making an arrest
Right between the eyes and then
A couple in the chest

Earthquakes tearing buildings down
And storms that loom ahead
The more you tune in to the grief
The more the fear is spread

It slowly crawls off of the page,
TV, or radio
And creeps into your mind where it
Will never cease to grow

Countries warring with each other
“What if it spreads here?”
Economy is crashing, “I’ll lose
All things I hold dear!”

And more you fear, the more you’ll tune
Back into the fear vendors
Hoping that someone will rise
To become our defenders

Surprise, surprise, there’s just more fear
There’s just more ache and dread
Just more reasons to stay home
And not get out of bed

At some point you have to admit
That what they’re dolling out
Is no different than a drug
That you snort up your snout

Tuning in to hear the constant
Destruction and death
Makes you just like a junkie
Who’s addicted to meth

You’ve snorted, shot up and smoked it
So long that now you’re hooked
“A car crash on the 401?
Ah, now I’m feeling cooked”

“I’ve gotta see the news tonight!
Some kid got knifed at school!”
And when that story’s done, you’ll wait
For the next piece that’s cruel

You won’t find hope or strength or faith
When you go turn that dial
All they want to dispense is
All of their fearful bile

Stop the spread and tune out from
The news that does no good
The stories that discourage you
From seeing things that could

Set your mind at ease and rouse
Your passion and your nerve
To realize the greatest purpose
In life is to serve

The fear wants you to stay inside
And keep serving their needs
Listening to their commercials
Bringing them proceeds

The fear will keep you in your house
Curled up in a scared ball
Only when you turn it off
Can you start walking tall

Selfie

20 Sep

Selfie

A camera placed in every hand
In 10 years time, each ego’s grand
The selfie shows us just how far we fell

Before each person could record
Each moment, folks were not so bored
The focus was on each flower’s sweet smell

Then came phones with quite the app!
An instant, easy way to snap
A picture…but the subject matter shows

Instead of taking the world in
Too many are focused within
Before the bathroom mirror they all pose

Expressions on their face reveal
How little passion, vigor, zeal
These self-absorbed self-muses do possess

Ever notice how most who
Take selfies seem a bit askew?
No smiles, just a blank look of distress

“Look at me!” it screams aloud
“Please pay attention!” to the crowd
But no one cares ‘cause they take selfies too

Hoping someone else will care
And compliment their done up hair
Their clothes, their looks, but no one takes the cue

Fishing for a thumbs up or
A comment, every selfie whore
Does walk the streets of Twitter, Instagram

And Facebook looking for a stroke
For their ego but it’s a joke
With no punchline, just an unfunny sham

They snap and snap and snap away
And post and post and post each day
“It’s me!” It’s me! It’s me!” is their sad song

A camera placed in every hand
To take pictures of all that’s grand
How did this lovely idea go so wrong?

You’ll Have To Kill Me

18 Sep
You’ll Have To Kill Me

There was a Warrior named Peace
The irony was grand
Other’s threats would not surcease
Fore he would take a stand

There would be those who’d warn of pain
But Peace said, “Not enough
Unless it’s death, it’s all in vain”
He’d boldly call their bluff

“Financial ruin!” some would crow
But Peace would then retort
“While I still breathe there is no woe”
Those threats young Peace would thwart

Time and time again they’d try
To strike fear in his soul
But Peace would never quake or cry
He’d dare a tougher goal

“You’ll have to kill me” he would give
A warning of his own
“You’ll win when I no longer live
When I am dust and bone”

And this is how young Peace did learn
That cowards don’t spill blood
They do not fight or cut or burn
Each threat is just a dud

Words used to intimidate
The comfort-addled weak
Quick to threaten, scold, berate
And dishearten the meek

But when a Warrior does raise
The stakes to death and life
These threateners are in a daze
So few unsheathe their knife

What they desire has low cost
They’re unwilling to pay
The price of fury and exhaust
To get their selfish way

Times have changed and very few
Are called to pay that price
They’ll use just words to threaten you
But never will they slice

They’ll talk and talk but never pound
They’ll urge but never slit
In idle threats no one has drowned
At least, no one with grit
