Grind

Grind

Too many look past
The sweat and the grind
Want the gold prize
But are idle inclined

Now I don’t claim
To be some dynamo
To tell you the truth
I’m feeling quite slow

From the aches and the pains
That are holding me back
But slow as I go
I don’t curb my attack

‘Cause it’s not about how
Fast you finish the race
In fact there’s no finish
It’s all in the chase

It’s running the road
That you know never ends
And pushing yourself
When it always extends

Accepting that there
Is no end in sight
Pushing on boldly
With all of your might

Not looking beside you
To see how the others
Compare with your pace
Or you with another’s

It’s about your potential
Finding your limit
And pushing it further
When you’d much rather quit

It’s about being spent
Completely tapped out
Then roaring with vigor
A primeval shout

“I’ll never give up
It’s not in my code
I’ll keep trudging on
Even though slowed”

Endurance and faith
Conviction and will
Awake in yourself
And in others, instill

And after a while
As others have sat
And you’ve ground your feet
Till they’re ragged and flat

They’ll marvel at all
That you have attained
From running the road
From not being chained

And they’ll want the same
And maybe they too
Will have the conviction
To follow it through

But remind them that it
Does come at a price
Before they lace up
Give this sound advice:

“There’s no end in sight
There won’t be a finish
The harder you grind
The more you diminish

It’s the warrior’s code
To give it your all
And when legs start to buckle
Well, then you can crawl

The goal is to always
Be moving forward
That is the prize
The grind will reward”

Seek

Seek

Sorry but the old saying isn’t
“Sit and ye shall find”
It takes the movement detailed in
The aforementioned grind

You won’t find what you’re looking for
Unless you choose to seek
If all you do is sit at home
You’ve got the wrong technique

‘Cause no one found a single thing
By sitting on a couch
Complaining about everything
And being just a grouch

Seeking is what brings about
The changes in  your life
Don’t be scared that it will cause you
Suffering and strife

The truth is that there really isn’t
Much to fear out there
Scared of what people will think?
The truth is they don’t care

So why should you then care about
Whatever they may say?
Let them give their two cents worth
And then be on their way

Afraid that someone will say no
To something you request?
Ask again and once again
It works, I will attest

Send a letter every week
Like Andy in Shawshawk
Show them your tenacity
And take it to the bank

That no one can deny someone
Who tries their very best
Perseverance is the key
To closing every quest

Use each opportunity
To make another one
Everything’s connected to
The place you have begun

Now get up and out the door
And seek the thing you need
“Seek and ye shall find” it says
So seek and you’ll succeed

Survivor

Survivor

This is the legend of a man
Whose brothers numbered four
The five performed for thousands who
Did admire and adore

The eldest was the Yellow Rose
Of Texas, big bad Dave
This ornery tall cowboy was
Rambunctious, just and brave

Second was the Golden Warrior
Kevin, more soft spoken
The graceful barefoot hero whose
Focus and poise were token

Brother number three was Kerry
Muscle upon muscle
In the gym, the Modern Day
Warrior showed great hustle

Brothers number four and five
Were Michael and young Chris
They both possessed the same heart which
Nobody could dismiss

At first it seemed the tale would be
About a dynasty
The legend of five brothers and their
Endless winning spree

But life does not always work out
Exactly how it’s planned
This legend was not of success
But what one can withstand

The first to go was Yellow Rose
And thousands came to mourn
But no one took it harder than
The four who had been born

By the same mother, and three years
Later Michael followed
Leaving three remaining brothers
Feeling as if swallowed

By grief, despair and sadness and
In four years Chris fell too
The youngest of the boys had let
Too much heartache accrue

The pair of brother warriors
Remaining tried their best
To persevere, but Kerry had
Endured an extra test

He’d wiped out on his bike and lost
His right foot so his pain
Was physical as well and led
To drugs which strength did drain

And two years after Chris had died
The Texas Tornado
Had fought as long as he could and
Felt it was time to go

Shortly after that, their father
Joined his boys as well
Leaving one survivor to
On whole tragedy dwell

For years the crowd would wonder how
Much longer he would last
Rarely had one person had
So much sadness amassed

But years went by and legend changed
To one of strength and hoping
All by himself this survivor
Wrote a legend of coping

An influential lore of how
One must let go, move on
No matter what you lose, tomorrow
Always brings new dawn

A legend of the power of
Not focusing on loss
Finding peace and strength from friends
And the Man on the cross

Being grateful for the things
That still remain in life
His faithful fans, his children and
For thirty years, his wife

This legend of a survivor
Should serve to carry you
In times of tragedy and loss
It’s helped me carry through

And though the Golden Warrior
Is a brother no longer
He’s been blessed as a father of
Brothers making him stronger

Always keep in mind your legend
Isn’t ever finished
As long as you do not let grief
Make your spirit diminished

Survive the trials and the tests
Survive life’s very worst
Survive the feelings that you are
Unlucky or are cursed

Take control of destiny
And with warrior strength
Become a survivor who will
Endure at any length

Charlie Mike

12 Feb

“If you are going through hell, keep going.” ~Winston Churchill

Charlie Mike

There will be times in life when you
Feel that you’re overwhelmed
You’ve suffered too much loss and feel
The wheel cannot be helmed

It starts to rain and won’t ease up
It just proceeds to pour
It’s in those times you should recall
The words of our brave Corps

“Charlie Mike” is what troops say
When plans all go to shit
They do not abort their mission
Instead, they deal with it

“Charlie Mike” from the NATO
Phonetic Alphabet
The letters “C” and “M” declare
It isn’t over yet

It means “CONTINUE MISSION”
And it has carried me through
Times of loss and sorrow when
I knew not what to do

When I could not devise a plan
In face of all the strife
“Charlie Mike’s” the one plan that
Helped me go on with life

When your mind is elsewhere and
You’re too focused on grief
“Charlie Mike” will move your legs
And help turn a new leaf

Regardless of your losses
Even if they’re catastrophic
Keep it simple instead of
Being so philosophic

Take note from our warriors
Adorned in camouflage
“Charlie Mike” no matter how
Persistent the barrage

Short Wisdom

Short Wisdom

There isn’t much that can be said
If only a few words are read
Wisdom isn’t nice and short
And small attention spans just thwart

If you are serious about
Gaining some of wisdom’s clout
You’ll have to make the time to read
‘Cause it’s not a trait gained through speed

Finish It!

26 Aug

Finish It

Being someone who works hard
At many different things
I’ll often get a person who
Comes up to me and sings

“I’ve got an idea that I think
May be right up your alley!”
The problem is they don’t stick to
It until the finale

If someone gave me a nickel
For every great idea
I’d have enough to purchase both of
North and South Korea

They talk about their master plan
Excitement in their eyes
Strictly focused on the joy
That will come with the prize

But somewhere down along the road
Towards the finish line
Things don’t always go so smooth
What’s this, a steep incline?

An effort that must be expended?
Sweat that must be poured?
Oh no! Some hard work before you
Can claim your sweet reward!

I’m not the brightest guy around
I’m not the wisest either
Most talented in my field
Or passionate, I’m neither

The key to my success has been
That I will never quit
While everyone is tapping out
I just will not submit

I haven’t finished everything
That I’ve ever conceived
But the ratio of all
The things that I’ve achieved

Is high enough to make me proud
Of all the things I’ve finished
One or two things in limbo
Don’t make me feel diminished

But most of the ideas I hear
Don’t ever leave the ground
It starts with so much excitement
But then I have to hound

And pester and ask, “What’s the word?
Have you done any work?”
More often than not I hear
That they have had to shirk

Their wonderful idea because
They’ve been extremely ‘busy’
This pattern of vigor and then
Indifference makes me dizzy

Hold on to that feeling of
Excitement at the start
You’re going to need it all the way
Because it will depart

As you find out it takes time
And effort to complete
This wonderful idea you have
This monumental feat

Sorry if I come off crass
But I’ve just had my fill
Of great ideas that people have
Before they climb the hill

I’ve had too many conversations
Where I ask about
That great idea that never flew
Because someone bailed out

“Finish it!” I can’t resist
From saying anymore
“Shut your mouth and move your legs
Until they’re nice and sore”

‘Cause anyone can talk about
A great idea that came
It’s the ones who finish it
That will get the acclaim
