Beautiful Day

Beautiful Day

It’s a beautiful day
If you just pay attention
And forget all the things
That build up the tension

Even if you have bills
That are three months past due
The sun is still shining
And the skies are still blue

Your co-worker may
Be an arrogant ass
But that doesn’t make
The lake have less bass

You can stew in your office
You can lurch in your cave
Or you can watch healing waters
Wave upon wave

Through all of life’s troubles
The pains and the stress
One thing that I’ve learned
Is that more is less

So I step back and notice
The little things
How the tree softly whispers
How the red robin sings

Try it some time
Grab a bench by a pond
Take a deep breath
You’ll soon feel the bond

It’s amazing the thrill
You’ll get when a fish
Jumps up from the pond
And twists with a splish

The quiet, the peace
It’s all so serene
The sun is so warm
The air is so clean

So get out of the office
Take off that tie
And your shoes while you’re at it
And get under the sky

Peaceful Warriors

22 Sep

“I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent. The pursuit of truth does not permit violence on one’s opponent.” ~Mahatma Gandhi

“Violence, even well intentioned, always rebounds upon oneself.” ~Lao Tzu

“Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.” ~Isaac Asimov

“Nothing good ever comes of violence.” ~Martin Luther

Peaceful Warriors

Some people like to use the term
Of “Warrior” to reaffirm
Their views on martial arts and other fighting

But “Warrior” to me does not
Involve a kick or knee or shot
To ribs, nor does it involve slaps or biting

It doesn’t have to do with punching
Leg sweeps, trips, throws, chops or crunching
These fighters I believe misuse the word

“Warrior!” they shout with fists
All balled up while they tape their wrists
But all I see is cowards who are stirred

To hurt and maim while they “defend”
Who are rigid instead of bend
They are not Warriors in my own eyes

Anyone who says to throw
A punch or kick to inflict woe
And pain and hurt is simply telling lies

A Warrior has peaceful heart
A Warrior will never start
A fight, nor do they finish one as well

To inflict pain is not their way
If needed, they will run from fray
Instead of causing someone else to swell

Or bruise or bleed or fall to ground
A true Warrior will never pound
A true Warrior has great empathy

And is directly linked into
Another person’s point of view
And usually, with courage, makes them see

That it does not need to degrade
To such a violent charade
A Warrior can look them in the eye

And rather than with aggression
They meet that threat of oppression
With calmness in their voice as they defy

With grace and poise and control that
Can diffuse anger behind bat
Or knife or gun or weapon that they wield

The peaceful Warrior needs no
Boxing, Kung Fu or Jeet Kun Do
Because they use their wisdom as their shield

Love Is…

Love Is…

Love is second nature
Love Is reflex, love’s innate
No struggle or effort needed
To care for your mate

Love obliterates ego
To point where there’s no “I”
Love for someone else bids that
Selfish ego goodbye

Love is instinct, built within
Our blood and DNA
Love does not need to “cool down”
True love has no delay

We see it in our animals
In how they care for young
Inherent duty to protect
The small lives which have sprung

We see it in the packs that travel
Together in wild
Loyalty for each other
Even the beasts reviled

But true love is so rare among
The human race it seems
A concept that only exists
Within most people’s dreams

Because the human mind is shackled
With such selfishness
Fear of hurt, embarrassment
Of having to confess

Their true love for another
Worry seeps in and corrupts
Choking the life out of love
As the ego erupts

Love is never angry and
Love is never hostile
‘Cause love is made of empathy
And ‘cause love walks a mile

In the loved one’s shoes and love
Lets go of own opinion
Love is not a slave to fear
And is not ego’s minion

Love is brave and bold and love
Makes no apologies
Love envigors, love strengthens
Love heals, love tames, love frees

From “me,” from “I,” from “myself” and
It opens selfish eyes
To smallness of the ego while
It makes the spirit rise

Self-Influence

Self-Influence

Influence is all around
And often there’s no choice
You’re bombarded by many a
Selfish, frustrated voice

Surrounded by those impatient
Walk beside those with fear
Spend all day or night in presence
Of those with no cheer

And they are all influences on
Even the strongest will
Eventually they will heat up
And melt those who are chill

That is why it’s important
To make sure self-imposed
Influence is around us
So that we stay composed

Wear a piece of jewelry
That helps serve to remind
Of what you are, a Warrior
And by that be defined

If you are surrounded by
Those who exhibit rage
To counter their bad influence
You will have to engage

Auditory influence
That broadcasts peace, control
As they rant, rave and scream and shout
Play music with some soul

Counter all the influence
That is ugly and dark
Don’t just sit there and take it
Make an effort, embark

Surround yourself with opposite
Of the things that you hate
Things of beauty, things of peace
Things that slow your heart rate

Yes, the ones who are angry
Will be put off by it
And that is the perfect time to
Say, “I don’t give a shit”

They do not realize that they
Are influences of
Negativity and so
Of course they’re blind to love

State it clear: “This is what I
Choose as my influence
Not what you currently do
Put out, a vibe that’s tense

I choose this peace, this quiet
This control, this poise, this grace
This is the self-imposed influence
I choose to embrace

Because the influence you give
For me just doesn’t work
So look, listen and show restraint
Or elsewhere go berserk”

Angel In My Bed

7 Jul

Angel in my Bed

Some days I battle through much hell
But each morning’s the same
I wake up, turn and see an angel
Who helps me reclaim

Some strength, some grace, some belief that
There’s beauty still on Earth
Her peaceful slumber always gives me
Some much needed mirth

I see her still serenity
And feel a wave of peace
I’m grateful to have one person
Who makes my calm increase

She’s like a peaceful lake or a
Perfect golden sunset
In her presence I feel no stress
No worry, doubt or fret

It makes me take a moment to
Appreciate the grace
That still exists in this cynical
Negative, snide place

And it inspires me to show
The same grace on my quest
When I go outside and am put
To the world’s rigid test

An angel in my bed each morning
Always helps remind
That beauty sleeps beside me before
I’m off to the grind

You Are Not A Warrior

27 May

“Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn’t even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back.” ~Heraclitus

You Are Not A Warrior

With seven thousand people on
This little page I’ve made
There is one thought that on my mind
Has occasionally weighed

The words of Heraclitus speak
Of how there are so few
Warriors while there are many
Targets just shot through

If you are on this page that claims
To be created by
A Warrior and is meant for
Those who wish to apply

The same virtues, then you must ask
Yourself which one are you:
Just another target or
One of the very few?

A Warrior does not wake up
And dread the day ahead
A Warrior does not wish he
Or she could stay in bed

A Warrior is strong enough
To be gentle but firm
A Warrior does not apologize
And does not squirm

You are not a Warrior
If you have no control
Over how much you do drink
Or food that’s in the bowl

You are not a Warrior
If people cause you stress
If you allow what others do
To influence, depress

You are not a Warrior
If you worry too much
You’ll never find a Warrior
Trapped inside of fear’s clutch

You are not a Warrior
If you are weak and scared
You are not a Warrior
If you have never dared

You are not a Warrior
If you’re concerned about
What others may think and let
Them fill your head with doubt

You are not a Warrior
If something offends you
Accusations and complaints
Only make ego stew

You are not a Warrior
If you wish it were easy
Or if you are a man and treat
Women dirty and sleazy

You are not a Warrior
If you have read this piece
And feel pissed off and press “Unlike”
And make the count decrease

You are just a target that’s
Been hit, bullseye, once more
As they say, “On your way out
Don’t let your ass hit door”

‘Cause I don’t have the time to waste
On people who can’t see
That every single person has
The potential to be

A Warrior but few step up
And make the sacrifice
So if you are a target then
You don’t need my advice

Upset

16 May

“He who angers you conquers you.” ~Elizabeth Kenny

Upset

There was a man who was angered
Because he did not get
Exactly what he had in mind
So he got quite upset

He whined, complained and let off steam
And then a few days later
Forgot about what angered him
And stopped being a hater

A Warrior walked up to him
And asked “You still upset?
A couple days ago you were
Filled with venom and fret”

“No,” the man replied, “that was
A couple days ago
It’s sorted itself out and now
I no longer feel woe”

“Then here is something that will bring
You back to that passed day”
The Warrior said and proceeded
To these harsh words say:

“You are a fool, you are disgusting
Weak, pathetic, lame
Selfish, how you spout your wrath
And constantly lay blame

You give no thought of how your words
Cause turmoil in others
All you care about is you
No thought for sisters, brothers

You don’t get what you want and so
You act like a big baby
Instead of taking days to cool
Do it instantly, maybe?”

The man who was upset was once
Again filled with much rage
The Warrior had poked the bear
And rattled his small cage

“How dare you say these words to me?”
He shouted angrily
The Warrior said, “‘Cause I won’t
Just sit here silently”

“You have a problem and I see
A chance to help you train
And so I make you this promise:
I will cause you much pain

I will ruffle your feathers and
I will step on your toes
I’ll stomp your eggshells and I will
Cause your ego great woes

You’ll get upset, then feel better
A couple days from now
And when you do, I promise you
I make you this stern vow:

That I will do it all again
‘Till pattern’s clear to you”
With that the Warrior turned and
Walked off into the blue

Leaving the upset man to
Huff and puff and be mad
Until a couple days later
When something made him glad
