Patience

Patience

Patience isn’t something that
You can flip off and on
It can’t be gained with intellect
And can’t be forced with brawn

You can’t use complex formulas
In order to be calm
Logic doesn’t help that much
When folks aren’t in your palm

And muscle won’t change someone’s mind
When they refuse to hear
Instead of building up patience
You’re just instilling fear

So then the question begs to ask
“Just how does one keep cool?
How can I be more patient
Instead of act the fool?”

The answer comes in knowing that
Nothing is instantly
The cost is not with brains or brawn
But time that is the fee

I know that you will likely say,
“I haven’t got the time!”
Because you’re busy focused on
Your own successful climb

But that’s exactly where you’re wrong
So maybe it will aid
To think about it in this way
Of what your time is made

Time’s too big a concept for
People to comprehend
So break it down in smaller parts
To moments that append

You may not have the time to deal
With some kind of distress
But you can spare a moment to
Clean up a person’s mess

No one has the time to put up
With a person’s slip
But give a moment and you’ll see
Your patience start to grip

It may be hard to wait for someone
To get back to you
But give one moment and one more
The more that you accrue

Is directly related
To patience you amass
Benching moments just like weights
And building up your class

So next time someone does you wrong
Or tries to pass the buck
Don’t let yourself get all upset
And start to run amok

Take a moment from your stock
Of time you have to use
‘Cause that’s the price that patience costs
So have you paid your dues?

Test

Test

Tests are not just something that
You have to take in class
The judgement of your fortitude
Is something that won’t pass

There’ll never be a final test
There won’t be an exam
And best not to procrastinate
You won’t have time to cram

Everything in life is meant
To analyse your worth
The tests have been administered
Since right around your birth

Sharing toys with other kids
And playing nice at school
Welcoming the new student
When others would be cruel

Losing baseball games with grace
And shaking winners hands
Respecting what your parents say
Obeying their commands

A few years pass, but tests still come
In every shape and form
Provoke you to give in to hate
And tempt you to conform

Every parking ticket is a
Test of poise and tact
Each one passed will help you with
The next time you’re attacked

Your boss may not be the most patient
Guy or gal you know
But the more that they test you
The more you will bestow

Tolerance and understanding
Upon your temperament
Peace of mind is what you’ll have
While they stress and lament

Family isn’t always going to
Get along so well
But speaking softly works much better
Than when people yell

Every seat kicked at the theatre
Every kernel chomped
Can put your patience to the test
If tolerance is prompt

There’s a list of things that can
Annoy you day to day
But if you bomb the test it will
Only cause you dismay

Study hard by staying calm
And letting go of things
That you have no control over
And severing the strings

The more you ace the more you’ll see
The tests for what they are
The more inclined you will be to
Receive one more gold star

Warrior Indigestion

Warrior Indigestion

As years go by, our bodies change and how we handle food
Changes due to indigestion and we must exclude
Those things we could consume with no effort in younger days
Those same things now cause heartburn and set intestines ablaze

For Warriors, there are some foods which no longer digest
Within the fiery pit that burns intensely in our chest
Things like whining cause a gag reflex within our maw
Laying blame elicits vomit shooting from our jaw

Having no accountability gives us the runs
Laziness to do the work sprays liquid from our buns
“1st World Problem” stress does not sit right within our gut
Lack of gratitude for blessings makes us puke somewhat

Pursuit of shallow status such as money, job and cars
Does not agree with stomachs decorated with old scars
The selfie/ego/snowflake generation gives us gas
Because our diet is made up of iron, steel and brass

Fire goes down easy, problems quench our intense thirst
Pain’s a yummy snack that we could gorge on ‘till we burst
Lighting is dessert and storms are delectable meals
We’re nourished by what makes most sick: challenges and ideals

Sacrifice and work, accountability and grace
With empathy and bravery is how we stuff our face
We’ll pass on all the fear and weakness buffets that most feast
They may slake appetites of sheep, but don’t nourish a beast

Stepping Back

Stepping Back

The world’s become a smaller place, or rather it would seem
Thanks to wi-fi internet and video live stream
Instant tweets and Instagram and Facebook posts from those
Who suffer pain and use their phone to share all of their woes

We are indeed connected, each and every person here
But viewing hi-res images of events that aren’t near
Are causing a perspective loss, there’s folks who carry grief
For things half-way around the world with misguided belief

That there is something they can do by ranting or despairing
By hash-tagging and vlogging and by liking and by sharing
Focused half-way ‘round the world and not on what is near
Not present and not aware of their place on this sphere

Perhaps it’s time for stepping back from these world-wide events
These overwhelming weekly travesties that make no sense
Maybe it’s simply too much to know what’s happening
In every dark corner of Earth, each terrible, grim thing

Perhaps the wide-spread stress, anxiety and angst we feel
Is caused by what’s trending and in our newsfeed and newsreel
Perhaps it’s time to step back and be present where we are
Focus on the loved ones near, not strangers who are far

Perhaps it’s time to be aware of local matters more
That we can influence instead of some overseas war
Perhaps it’s time to turn the news off, edit feed, log out
Turn phone off and have local faith instead of global doubt

Deny Empower Deny

Deny Empower Deny

A misguided approach to dealing with things which pose threat
Or harm, discomfort, hardship, displeasure, distress or fret
Is to deny, ignore, avoid, to bury head in sand
To run away from all the things you think you cannot stand

It’s my pleasure to tell you, dears, that you are very wrong
Those things you think you can’t handle are really not that strong
If you would just confront, engage, clear mind and make contact
Denying just empowers all your fears, that is a fact

Now there will be the fools who misinterpret and will think
That means you should indulge in self-destruction such as drink
And drugs but no, it’s not about a substance, it’s a feeling
That angst, anxiety or stress that comes at thought of dealing

With someone or something which causes you to run and hide
I challenge you for the next time to move forward, collide
Meet it and experience with something more than dread
With empathy instead of ego’s whispers in your head

In my experience when I have chosen to engage
Instead of run away the result wasn’t pain or rage
I learned just how weak that thing was that I thought had such power
Because I no longer denied, it was them who did cower

And places which would cause me dread became my forge of flame
Strengthening and honing the Warrior that I became
I no longer avoid a single person, thing or place
Because experience has taught me that when I embrace

The truth’s revealed and all those things which I thought would subtract
My joy and peace were only strong because I’d always backed
“Oh no” is why each demon lives to haunt your waking days
“Ok” is how to sap its power and make your own raise

Be Appropriate

5 May

Be Appropriate

So many read self-help books and try to devise a plan
A be-all, end-all procedure to follow rather than
Treating every situation as if it’s unique
They’d rather go on auto-pilot than have to critique

Experience is valuable, but it cannot foresee
How EVERY situation going forward’s going to be
If there is one plain, simple rule on how to deal with all
It’s “Be appropriate,” sometimes you’ll laugh, sometimes you’ll brawl

There’s no way to predict a situation so you must
Discern what is appropriate, your gut’s what you should trust
Be peaceful with those who are peaceful and lower your voice
Be confident with schemers and be adamant in choice

Skip words like “I” and “me” with empaths, walk miles in their shoes
Show no mercy with narcissists and fight those who abuse
Praise the ones who give much praise, support the ones who care
And those who bully; push them back, go nose-to-nose and dare

So many carry so much guilt because their parents taught
“You should be nice to everyone” but that’s a naive thought
Monsters do exist and hoping for the best won’t work
It’s in presence of selflessness where these demons all lurk

They prey upon the ones who do not judge and tear them down
They satisfy their desires and leave the host to drown
And all these victims fall because they were taught to be nice
And just smile when someone puts their neck into a vice

May I suggest a different plan instead of “being kind”
Be apt, alert, befitting, be appropriate, not blind
Do what most find unpleasant and use your empathy
To look deep into people’s souls and accept what you see

Those who live for truth and love; cherish with high regard
Those who live for lies and hate, put fists up, be on guard
Life’s not just sunshine and rainbows, sometimes there is rain
Umbrellas work much better than hoping drops will abstain

The Arrow

4 Oct

The Arrow

The origin of the word “sin” means “To have missed the mark”
To have aimed for the bullseye but lodged it in the bark
Whenever arrow strays from goal and travels way off course
It is not target’s fault, but rather fault of arrow’s source
A lack of concentration on the shot we need to make
A failure to notice the wind or the arm’s subtle shake
A moment not taken to breathe, to relax and converge
To block out all distractions and superfluous to purge
If the arrow is to hit its mark, the eyes must stay
Laser-focused on the path and not for moment stray
The same is said for virtue, if we are to be our best
Our focus must not deviate from honorable quest
Only when we turn attention to things off the path
Do we feel the guilt of sin, its rueful, shameful wrath
Take a deep breath in and then slowly let it half out
Release the arrow and be sure of its intended route

Fall

6 Dec

“We do not rise to the level of our expectations. We fall to the level of our training.” ~Archilochus, Warrior Poet

Fall

Today my message isn’t that
I hope you rise to win
I don’t hope you ascend through all
Of life’s strife and chagrin

Instead, I hope you fall, but to
The level of your training
Not to level of normals
Of whining and complaining

Of weakness, laziness and fear
Instead, I hope you fall
To level of a WARRIOR
Of strength and grace and gall

I hope when challenges arise
You fall to a high level
And have accountability
Instead of blaming, “Devil!”

Or other people, fall to what
You’ve always done in past
Rolling up your sleeves instead
Of acting so aghast

I hope you fall to focus, courage
And intensity
Instead of clawing in attempt
To climb pathetically

I hope your muscles swell with strength
And mind is sharp and clear
I hope that when you fall, the ground
Below is very near

‘Cause warriors who train each day
Do not have far to fall
Never shocked or caught off guard
And nothing can appall

A warrior is not afraid
When they’re knocked off their feet
They know they don’t have far to go
Because they are elite

And know it won’t take very long
To get back up and resume
The never-ending battle that
Began back in the womb

And will continue ‘till the day
Eyes close the final time
It’s all about how far you fall
Not how high you can climb

Pushed

25 Oct

As shocking as it may sound, I’ve had some complaints at work made against me. Do you get offended, hurt or worked up when someone makes false accusations towards you? I used to, but having a warrior-mindset has eradicated the need to defend, explain, and exonerate my name. I’ve learned that there’s a common theme with all of the people who point a finger at me and say I’m rude, abrasive or difficult, and that common theme is that they lack what a warrior possesses and is capable off…

Pushed

They push and push until you crack
And when you do, then they step back
They see that you have had enough
So they watch as you huff and puff

But what if you simply don’t crack?
What if you bare their attack?
What if there is no effect?
What if they cannot deject?

What if you’re a rock when they
Have hurtful, hateful things to say?
What if your reserve stands fast
When you are bullied and harassed?

I’ll tell you what will happen, mate
When you refuse to take the bait
They’ll whine and cry that YOU’RE the one
Who was abrasive and did shun

A warrior’s an anomaly
From drama they are fully free
And since the normals cannot grasp
They imagine your voice is rasp

They imagine that you aren’t nice
They give their pathetic advice
They say, “You really need to learn
To deal with this kind of concern!”

They’ll make a complaint to your boss
Another try to incur loss
But boss will simply hear the tale
Of how a weak normal did fail

To push a warrior around
And tried to grind you to the ground
But since your grace was kept in tact
They snivelled to make an impact

By crying to authorities
To try to bring you to your knees
But no one, not grunts or a chief
Can give a warrior much grief

They can’t be pushed, they are a wall
And it’s the PUSHERS who all fall
While warriors stand firm and strong
Bear witness to all that is wrong

The ego and the selfishness
The cowardice and laziness
The fact they push so hard reveals
That they lack warrior ideals

Stand fast, stand firm, and do not bend
Do not explain, do not defend
And do not fear they’ll be believed
Because all those who are deceived

Are just as weak as those who shove
And push and are devoid of love
Who do not serve and give and care
Let your attack just be a glare

A knowing glance that weakness stands
Before you with its outstretched hands
In vain attempt to push you back
Do not falter, do not crack
