Warrior’s Prayer

12 Feb

Warrior’s Prayer

The common routine
When one goes to pray
Is to get down on knees
And in one spot stay

Clasp hands together
Keep eyes closed tight
In an attempt
To not see the plight

That may work just fine
If you wish to give praise
But most don’t give prayer
Until darkest days

And when the storm comes
I’ve found it works best
To not just curl up
And beg to be blessed

And that’s a main problem
With people who follow
If you beg for a break
Then your prayers are just hollow

The point’s not to live
The easiest life
It’s to build up the strength
To endure the strife

When hardships befall
Don’t beg for an end
Get up while you pray
For the strength to transcend

Open your eyes
As you ask for resolve
And accept that motion
Is the key to evolve

Although this concept
To a few may appall
A prayer on your knees
Will do no good at all

It’s been my experience
When times are their worst
The best start to prayer
Is to get up first

One foot then the other
Keep myself moving
To God above
And to myself proving

I’m not looking for lenience
I’m not begging for pity
I know parts of life
Are not going to be pretty

I pray to the Father
For strength added on
To what’s already in me
To my own employed brawn

Upgrade my power
And my fortitude, raise
Enhance my patience
Amid all the craze

In the book of Isaiah
Forty-one: ten
“I will strengthen and help you”
The Lord said, amen

But strength will not do you
Much good at all
If you’re hidden away
Curled up in a ball

The warrior’s way
Is to charge with no fear
And the warrior’s prayer
Is made in high gear

Devil on my Shoulder

30 Nov
Devil on my Shoulder

There’s a devil on my shoulder
But he doesn’t tell me, “Drink!”
He doesn’t urge to lie or steal
Instead, he whispers, “Sink”

This devil took his seat way back
In two thousand and six
He caused my clavicle damage
Which no surgeon can fix

Every day he brings the pain
The first moment I wake
Under every smile and laugh
This devil makes me ache

He twists his pitch fork deep and hard
Whenever people doubt
The pain spreads to my gut and makes
Me want to puke lunch out

Sometimes lightning dances there
And sometimes lava pours
Of all the challenges I’ve faced
Of all the tests and wars

Nothing pushes my limits
As this small devil does
The fog, fatigue, the hurt, the ache
And all of it because?

More than 10 years have now passed
And still I don’t know why
And many with the same devil
Have made the choice to die

What is it that keeps me going?
What drags me along?
Why do I not cry and pout
Despite all that is wrong?

Perhaps because that devil is
Not just a part of me
He takes up space no matter where
On this world you may be

And our purpose is not to rid
Ourselves of that horned beast
Our purpose and our mission is
Not just to be released

Our purpose is to battle and
Our purpose is to duel
Charlie Mike, continue mission
Even with no fuel

And when the last breath leaves your lungs
There’s no peace to be had
I won’t be going to heaven
To chill with Christ and dad

That little shit who sat upon
My mortal shoulder can’t
Get away that easy, no
To him I will not grant

Reprieve simply because my body
Ceases to exist
I’m coming down to meet him and
I’m balling up my fist

Religious folk are scared of hell
And hope they can avoid
The fire and the brimstone by
Not getting so annoyed

But for the ones like me who carry
Devils dealing pain
Hell is where we are right now
And somehow we maintain

Grace, composure, empathy
Despite lightning and flame
Through focus and intensity
No sorries and no shame

Make yourself as comfortable
As you can, little scamp
‘Cause when it’s time to move on
I’ll be coming to YOUR camp

Distance

25 Nov

Distance

To deal with something that takes toll
To overcome and take control
Takes distance but not in the way you’d think

It’s not about the miles moved
Creative distance is what’s soothed
So many who have been pushed to their brink

Moving physically won’t do
Much good if your mind still does stew
Over the thing that threatens all your peace

And so that mind you must coerce
In creativity imerse
Yourself and soon your struggle will then cease

Create! Create! Do anything!
A painting! Writing! Sculpture! Sing!
Will something new into reality

Creative distance, every day
And soon you’ll see how far away
The bullshit is that made you take a knee

Get over yourself and stand tall
(Even if at first you crawl)
In time your creativity will trek

The distance that will show quite clear
What caused you stress and pain and fear
Is now just a distant and silly speck

You Are Loved

17 Nov

You Are Loved

When someone tries to make you feel
As though you do not matter
When someone criticizes what you do
Instead of flatter

When someone tells you to give up
And that you won’t succeed
When someone tries to make your faith
Within yourself recede

When someone who could help chooses
To not show empathy
When someone who could ease your pain
Instead hurts more with glee

When many band together and show
No thought or concern
When all those souls who could have helped
Do nothing except spurn

Remember you are loved by those
Who aren’t made of cold stone
Remember you are loved and that
You are never alone

You are loved by family
Who share your blood and bone
You are loved by friends who care
By picking up the phone

You are loved by survivors
Who know life isn’t fair
You are loved by warriors
Who boldly, bravely dare

You are loved by me because
I know the pain you feel
And since you are a warrior
You’ll endure it with zeal

And most importantly remember
You are loved by YOU
For all the strength and poise and grace
And courage you imbue

King of Pain

29 Oct
crown
King of Pain

I wake up and the crown descends and digs into my skull
The King of Pain has risen and the day will not be dull
It won’t be numb, it won’t be foggy, cloudy, fuzzy, dim
Because I don’t use alcohol to make my aching slim

I don’t use weed to take the edge off of my Kingdom’s strain
I don’t use coke or smack to bring fleeting joy to my brain
I am a Warrior and I believe I do not need
Anything outside myself to survive or succeed

While peasants popped their pills at every hint of misery
While paupers took a swig or shot for one night to be free
While peons, rubes and boors lit up and blocked the pain with smoke
This King faced torment head-on and here’s what years did invoke:

Patience, perseverance, courage, adamance, resolve
Self-belief, self-confidence, incentive to evolve
Clarity to see that we empower all the things
From which we run and hide from, while confronting always brings

Growth and depth and understanding, confidence and peace
Normals robbed themselves each time they used something to cease
The lightning shooting through their nerves while Kings all choose to reign
Be challenged, tested, honed and forged by their Kingdom of Pain

Warrior Indigestion

14 Jul

indigestion

Warrior Indigestion

As years go by, our bodies change and how we handle food
Changes due to indigestion and we must exclude
Those things we could consume with no effort in younger days
Those same things now cause heartburn and set intestines ablaze

For Warriors, there are some foods which no longer digest
Within the fiery pit that burns intensely in our chest
Things like whining cause a gag reflex within our maw
Laying blame elicits vomit shooting from our jaw

Having no accountability gives us the runs
Laziness to do the work sprays liquid from our buns
“1st World Problem” stress does not sit right within our gut
Lack of gratitude for blessings makes us puke somewhat

Pursuit of shallow status such as money, job and cars
Does not agree with stomachs decorated with old scars
The selfie/ego/snowflake generation gives us gas
Because our diet is made up of iron, steel and brass

Fire goes down easy, problems quench our intense thirst
Pain’s a yummy snack that we could gorge on ‘till we burst
Lighting is dessert and storms are delectable meals
We’re nourished by what makes most sick: challenges and ideals

Sacrifice and work, accountability and grace
With empathy and bravery is how we stuff our face
We’ll pass on all the fear and weakness buffets that most feast
They may slake appetites of sheep, but don’t nourish a beast

Greatness

11 Jul

In loving memory of Muhammad Ali.

Greatness

There once was a man from Kentucky
This Louisville Lip was quite plucky
Like a bee he would sting
Inside the squared ring
And not one person claimed he was lucky

With skill and with heart he would win
Throwing jabs and big hooks to the chin
He won millions of hearts
With his brawn and his smarts
Not to mention his infectious grin

But the public opinion did sway
When the government one day did say:
“You must go overseas
And must kill our foes, please”
But that didn’t sit right with young Clay

They accused him of being just yellow
“Draft dodger!” they all called this fellow
But young Clay, now Ali
Did not dodge, duck or flee
He showed up to the draft and did bellow

“No thank you,” he told them and stood
By his ideals of mercy and good
They warned of the price
Which he said would suffice
In order to do what he should

They took away his boxing belt
And his wallet a big blow was dealt
They had cut his prime short
But they could never thwart
This great man’s choice which was so heartfelt

Years would go by and the hate
Would soften and folks did see straight
In hindsight they saw
No fear, fright or flaw
Years later they called Ali, “Great”

For greatness is making a choice
And then never betraying that voice
That says, “Stand for what’s right”
Though consequences might
Cause some to no longer rejoice

Today we remember with love
The greatest to lace up a glove
But we must also recall
That the cost wasn’t small
Sacrifice is what greatness is made of
