Too Little, Too Late
 
Some folks choose to live their lives as though there’s no tomorrow
But not as in the sense that they live without fear or sorrow
They live without awareness of comeuppance, consequence
All they live for is cheap thrills, the price: their common sense
 
Drugs or booze or trash that masquerades as food these days
They slowly kill their body in a grease and sugar haze
They indulge laziness and play their games and watch TV
And hide behind their feelings, “Nobody better shame me!”
 
Society now says it’s wrong to speak against weak will
“Smoke and drink and eat all that you want and pop a pill!’
Do nothing and be nothing, destroy yourself for years
And any words of warning to the like falls on deaf ears
 
But guess what happens when a human body is attacked
For years with garbage shoved and stuffed through its digestive tract?
The body finally says what the owner found so tough:
“ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH!”
 
It is a concept quite foreign to most, the idea that
Despite your continued cravings for drugs and booze and fat
Despite the fact that you still want, your body says, “No more!”
Despite your cravings, your body no longer will ignore
 
Heart problems and cancer, seizures, organ failure too
These drastic repercussions give weak wills a different view
They finally awake and learn the price of all their thirst
And hunger so they swear to change…now that they’ve been coerced
 
Too little and too late for many of those who do swear
To take care of themselves now that they’ve had their little scare
But sad truth is an iron will is not forged within fear
And most of these assurances are not all that sincere
 
I’ve seen it time and time again, the pattern just repeats
Self-destruction, promises, then corpses white as sheets
That “wake-up call” for many is actually a death-knell
Too little and too late and no will power now will quell
 
Years of lack of awareness, and once again, “Don’t shame!”
It’s just “bad luck” that they will die, right? They can’t take the blame!
The time has come to say “Enough” to self-indulgent thicks
Who squander their own health each day in order to get kicks
 
Life’s not fair and you don’t always get back what you gave
But one thing that’s for sure is if you crave and crave and crave
And pour and shovel anything down your throat to feel good
Instead of moderation and eating health foods you should
 
Your body will revolt and no promise or bargain will
Undo the damage that obliviousness does instill
No pleading with the God above, nor doctors up the street
Undoing years of ignorance: an impossible feat
 
Repairing damage from cravings: a futile waste of time
Moving after years of lethargy: too steep a climb
A short and painful death that’s filled with wishing for reprieve
Followed by years of sorrow by your loved ones who grieve
 
My words are meant to be as sharp as the sword that I wield
But they are not written in hopes that the sick will be healed
I’ve given up on those weak wills, they’ve made their beds to lay
My words are meant for those who care for their bodies each day
 
Do not quit, do not give up, don’t grow tired and stray
Don’t follow the drunk, drugged and obese crowd, do not betray
Yourself, keep fighting, keep caring, keep paying that high rent
On your body with exercise, nutrition, don’t relent
 
It may not guarantee more years but quality will rise
More energy, intensity, more passion, clearer eyes
Do not be a “too little, too late” person like most
The world does not need another repentant, rueful ghost

Nurture Thyself

nur·ture: to care for and encourage the growth or development of. To encourage, promote, stimulate, develop, foster, cultivate, boost, contribute to, assist, help, abet, strengthen, fuel.

“Do you love yourself?” I often hear people ask. “You’ve got to love yourself!” And almost always, the answer I hear is, “Yes, I love myself!” This to me is a good example of how the great and powerful word “love” is overused and has lost its meaning. I think a more appropriate question would be, “Do you nurture yourself?” Because that’s what love is. It’s not just standing around with warm, fuzzy feelings floating around in your brain for someone else or for yourself. It’s making an effort, taking the time and doing the work to nurture.

After completing my 10 Day Juice Fast, I can say in complete honesty that I love myself more than I ever have. I know for sure because I feel the love and appreciation resonating throughout my body. It feels amazing and it’s letting me know. Regardless of what your belief system is, whether you believe that humans were created by a higher power or not, no one can deny that the body is a living organism, and all living organisms function “better” (for lack of a better word) when they are nurtured. I shake my head at people who claim to love themselves, yet they turn the organism they dwell in, their bodies, into addicts of nicotine, alcohol, sugar and grease. We can even include the mind, which can be nurtured with deep, creative works such as poignant, intelligent books, art and music, yet some people who claim to love themselves only feed their mind “junk food” like shallow, stupid or hostile creative works. They also feed themselves with “junk people” as I wrote about in a poem once.

The funny thing about humans is that they know the difference between what nurtures and what harms. They may not like to admit it, and they may be very good at lying to themselves about it, but deep down we’re all programmed with that inescapable conscience that knows what we’re doing is positive or negative. Strong or weak.

Do you love yourself? Of course you do! Everybody knows the right answer to that question! But here’s a tougher one: Do you nurture yourself? Think it over and have an honest heart-to-heart with your own body. It’ll tell you the truth.

Nurture Thyself

“Do you love yourself?” the question
Is so often asked
“Of course!” the answer’s said with a
Smile that expertly masks

A body that is not nurtured
It’s slow and brain is fogged
Black tar coating lungs and grease
Within arteries clogged

An irritated attitude
Frustrated and hostile
“Yes, I love myself!” some say
Despite all of the bile

That does reside within them, that
Love quickly turns to hate
When they don’t get their way, they grow
Offended and irate

And all because they’re weakened by
The lack of nurturing
The failure to treat their body
Like it’s a Queen or King

To love thyself means to encourage
Your own health and strength
To stimulate, develop, foster
Go to any length

To sacrifice in order to
Fuel love’s demanding fire
To not just say the concept but
To work, to do, perspire

And when the work is done, you won’t
Need to answer the question
Your glowing skin with pinkish hue
Will serve as your expression

Your wide awake and alert eyes
Will provide your reply
Your focused thinking, energy
Cheer and joy will reply

Love yourself? Of course you do!
Who’d admit they do not?
But do you nurture yourself? That
Will take a bit more thought

Day 10!

It’s the final day of my 10 Day Juice Fast!

In addition to losing 10 pounds this week, I’ve also lost 2 dozen followers on my Facebook page. Very happy to see both of these forms of dead weight go! 🙂

There are people out there who are quite sick and tired of my constant Juice Fast updates, and probably think is has no part on a page calling itself “Warrior Poet Wisdom.” Unfortunately those people have missed the message I’ve been conveying right from the start here: one cannot only be a warrior in mind and spirit, they must be one in body as well.

The hang up for too many people is that they see someone else with a six pack of abs and go “I can’t do that!” So what? It’s not your duty to look as good as someone else’s potential. It’s your duty to look as good as YOUR potential. A warrior is not someone who has potential. A warrior is someone who is POTENT. There is no more “Slowly getting there! Getting better!” A warrior is THERE. A warrior doesn’t try to achieve someone else’s best, they achieve their OWN personal best and don’t measure themselves up against others.

Some have said to me, “But you don’t look like you need to lose any weight!” Compared to them, perhaps, but I don’t measure myself up against others. I knew I had a few extra pounds that weren’t doing me any good; only adding more pressure to my bad knees and making it harder to get out of bed in the morning. The extra weight had to go and I feel 1000% better now that it’s gone, no matter how much other people think I looked fine to begin with. The people who say “But you look fine” reveal a little about themselves right there. Looks have nothing to do with it.

Trust me, I’ve heard it all from overweight people. All of the excuses as to why they can’t lose the weight. I was one of them, and I spouted that horseshit myself for years until I showed some accountability, pointed a finger squarely into the mirror and said, “This is YOUR fault. Now YOU are going to fix it.”

Always remember that the mind cannot be strong unless the body is the strongest it can be. Don’t be discouraged if you’ve got some legitimate physical issues that keep you from being a professional athlete. Lord knows I’ve got a laundry list of them myself, but I refused to let those injuries, aches and pains keep me from being the best this body can potentially be. I have bad knees, a herniated disc in my neck and a severe shoulder injury that hurts ALL THE TIME, but I don’t let it keep me from being POTENT. I refuse to be another overweight victim of my circumstances, and I’ll never stop making an effort and trying harder than the average victim who gives up and says, “I can’t! It’s too uncomfortable!”

Weight Loss Tricks

Bombarded by all of the ads
All of the latest tricks and fads
New shortcuts that have not been tried before

Let me be bearer of bad news:
If you buy in, you’ll only lose
When you engage in that fat-burning war

The trainers and nutritionists
And pro-fighters who tape up their fists
And have a six-pack can’t save you at all

Even I, who’ve conquered my
Long battle with large gut and thigh
Don’t have the inspiration or the gall

To claim that I can enlighten
All that my “tricks” do is frighten
“Suffer” is all the advice I will give

Sweat and hurt and be stretched past
The point you thought you couldn’t last
Keep going when you’d much rather not live

Keep going when your sides both stab
Deep underneath all of  that flab
Keep going when your body says, “I quit!”

And only then will knowledge dawn
On you that you possess the brawn
To overrule the mind and not submit

To not depend on any tricks
Or rely on someone to fix
The flabby mess that you made all yourself

The most effective way to lose
The weight is to light your own fuse
Under your own ass and take back your health

To have accountability
To look in the mirror and see
The culprit who did this misdeed to you

Yourself; the one who chose great taste
Which left your own body disgraced
And left you feeling bloated, slow and blue

The naysayers will jump in, hurt
And angrily remind and blurt:
“No, Miro! You must love yourself they say!”

To that I strongly disagree
I love NO ONE who does hurt me
And that includes myself if I betray

My own body with choices that
Will leave me feeling weak and fat
The one who makes that choice can go to hell

I’ve killed that enemy within
Who caused my bad knees and stretched skin
And now I am lithe, toned and muscles swell

I’ve earned the right to have self love
Because I fought to get rid of
The “tricks and shortcuts” to transform my body

I stopped searching for someone to
Save me from all that was so true:
It was my fault that I had become shoddy

Too Much

Too Much

You go out to a restaurant
With your dear mate in tow
You take a look at the menu
And let the waitress know

What you’d like to order but
What they don’t’ seem to ask
Is if you’re really hungry and
If you’re up to the task

Of finishing off the whole plate
That they will soon bring you
An order seemingly for one
But actually feeds two

And while there are those who will simply
Stop eating when full
And throw rest out or doggie bag
Many do feel the pull

To keep eating and “clean their plate”
Just like when they were young
Mom and dad would not allow
The dessert to hit tongue

Until all food was devoured
And so now as adults
Many will keep eating and
Be sad with the results

For some it is a sick stomach
That will pass in a day
For others, it is discomfort
From how much they do weigh

It took me quite a while to
Recognize what they’re doing
That people who prepare your food
Bring too much to be chewing

That what you’re given isn’t what
Is best for your waist line
That they have no idea of what’s
The right amount to dine

Whenever my wife and I go
To some place for our dinner
We’re quite aware how hard it is
To leave the venue thinner

And so we decide on one thing
And split it between us
It may not seem enough at first
But by the end, it’s plus

Every time we end up full
And marvel, “How could one
Eat all that food by themselves
And feel good when they’re done?”

Just a quick reminder that
Not everything you’re brought
Is what you should accept and to
Forget what you’ve been taught

“Clean your plate” is bad advice
Instead follow your gut
When it says its had enough
Make sure your mouth stays shut

The 1-in-100 Warrior Award: You As A Machine

The way of the Warrior is not only about pushing yourself mentally, but physically too. There is a direct connection between your soul and body. As C.S. Lewis once said, “You don’t have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body.” And that’s all you truly have in this world. You may think you have a house, a car, a job, pets, even friends and family, but all of these things won’t necessarily be around until the end of your life. Some of them may even be gone tomorrow. Your body is the only constant from birth ’till death, and what you do with it plays a large part in your creativity, your productivity and your attitude.

Those who mistreat their bodies with lack of exercise and unhealthy eating are lying to themselves if they think they can get away with it. You’re lying to yourself if you think that you can push yourself mentally while taking shortcuts physically. Warriors are honest. They know the truth. They don’t lie to others, but more importantly, they don’t lie to themselves. They go into the gym knowing full well the importance of overcoming the challenge before them. How overcoming discomfort and physical difficulty makes you grow stronger not only in the gym, but when you’re dealing with an undisciplined, lazy, selfish and comfort-seeking person who makes the choice of unloading their frustrations on others. The Warrior felt their legs burning during that run or jog, or during that time on the Stairmaster, or during those squats, and persevered through it. The Warrior sees the undisciplined mind lashing out due to discomfort and remembers their own discomfort that was conquered. The Warrior keeps calm. Warriors see people throw fits from being pushed by challenges and remember constantly being pushed by weights. Warriors push back, and they understand that it takes focus, concentration and controlled, deliberate intensity over a sustained period of time to push back. They don’t snap back and bicker, because they’ve learned that doesn’t do you any good in the weight room.

And while so many fly off the handle or get stressed, Warriors choose to be calm, just as they choose the healthy food option when they’d much rather enjoy the unhealthy choice. Everything’s connected. The amount that you push yourself physically with exercise and how much you push against cravings is directly connected to how hard you’ll push yourself to excel at your job, to make the extra effort to start and finish that creative project you were thinking of doing, and how much you’ll expect of yourself when things don’t go as planned.

You As A Machine is a Warrior. We hear so many women talk about all of the weight they gained after having kids, and not being able to lose it. We hear so many talk about how as they grow older, the weight starts to pile on and won’t come off. As a 40 year old mother of two, You As A Machine is a reminder of the potential that we all have within us if we push ourselves. Here’s what a 40 year old mother of two achieved when she refused to lie to herself and chose to follow that innate truth we all have within us:

She’s an inspiration to everyone who ever listened to their own excuses as to why they’re not in the best shape they can be in, and an encouraging reminder to all those that listen and follow their own truth. True, some of us have rips, tears, breaks and other physical issues that will keep us from having washboard abs and bulging muscles, but the point isn’t to rise up to the level of other people’s potential, it’s to rise up to your own level. I know all about that, having suffered a permanent shoulder injury years ago. Despite the constant pain and weakness, I’m still in better physical shape than a vast majority of people I encounter every day that have no injuries or health issues. It’s because I push myself to my own limits and realize my own potential. I could be overweight and use the excuse of “I’m hurt” and nobody would fault me for it. But I’d be lying to myself. Just as You As A Machine could use her age and the fact that she’s had two kids as excuses to be overweight, but she doesn’t lie to herself either. She not only pushes and reaches her limits everyday, but serves others by giving advice and guidance on how they too can fulfill their own potential. Warrior Weight Loss Wisdom

Many people struggle with
The battle to lose weight
The problem is that they look for
Shortcuts to find their fate

I’m speaking from experience
When I speak of weight loss
Let me take a moment and
My weight history gloss

I was obese when I was young
Because I ate too much
And because I didn’t move
With running, sports and such

They laughed and poked their fun and called me
“Fatty” and a pig
I lost the weight because their insults
Did so deeply dig

I lost it through shortcuts like eating
Hardly any food
And shakes and pills because I was
Concerned how I was viewed

Surprise surprise, the weight came back
Because I hadn’t learned
Anything of discipline
And how weight loss is earned

Again I felt inadequate
Again I sought shortcuts
Diet pills instead of work
Starving instead of guts

Again the weight came off and then
Again it came right back
Again I felt that I was under
Their constant attack

But something finally came to me
The true reason to lose
All the weight I carried which
Had caused so many blues

When I chose to trim my waist
Not for another’s praise
But for my own accomplishment
That ended my fat days

I took the motto “try harder”
And didn’t look for ease
I finally accepted that
Weight loss was not a breeze

I disciplined myself with food
That didn’t taste that great
Compared to all the fried delights
That had packed on the weight

I exercised and learned about
What my true limits were
I stopped letting discomfort and
A little pain deter

The weight came off but I did not
Feel any swell of pride
I didn’t gaze in mirrors, my
New body wasn’t eyed

It was a by-product of something
Greater that I gained
An understanding of the power
Of being self-trained

No routines or regiments
No classes did I take
I didn’t have a trainer for
My convenience’s sake

I listened to my body and
Used it all that I could
And slashed my mind to ribbons when
It said “This is not good!”

“This is uncomfortable, this is
Too hard, this is not fun!
You’ be much happier if you
Ate junk and weighed a tonne!”

The weight stayed off because I have
The one thing that you need
In order for your weight loss to
Permanently succeed:

Discipline, the rigor of
Training, experience
Ability to make right choices
‘Cause you are intense

You cannot get it in a pill
Or shake or diet plan
The strength is already in you
So simplify your scan

Stop searching for methods to
Reduce your extra pounds
Cut out sugar and fried food
And push physical bounds

Go out for a jog, don’t fret
When you are out of breath
You’re falling to the level of
Your training, not your death

In time you will build discipline
And strength, conditioning
You’ll learn to stand up on your own
And to shortcuts not cling

And when you reach your goal you’ll see
The body that you’ve earned
Isn’t something that you’ll flaunt
For their heads to be turned

It’s something more, a symbol of
Your potential achieved
When you forsake the shortcuts and
In yourself have believed
