“The single biggest problem in communication
is the illusion that it has taken place.” ~George Bernard Shaw

Someone took the time to write
To you to ask a question
They sent an e-mail so I’d like
To make you this suggestion:

Reply

Someone sent a text and is
Awaiting your response
Do not wait ‘till later and
Treat it with nonchalance

Reply

Some archaic soul decided
To send in the mail
An old fashioned printed letter
And wants to hear your tale

Reply

Someone left a message on
Your answering machine
They wouldn’t waste their breath if they
Knew you’d just wipe it clean

Reply

Someone took the time to tweet
Or post to say “well done”
Show some gratitude ‘cause when
You’re silent you show none

Reply

Someone posted this here rhyme
In hopes it would inspire
Think about what you have read
And if you do admire:

In Your Face

17 Nov

In Your Face

My style’s described by many folks
As being “In Your Face”
I’ve found when trying to convey
A point, it’s the best place

To focus all your energy
When expressing a thought
A point related far away
Is one that’s made for naught

But when you get right in their face
And grab their full attention
When it’s right up close, it seems
To get full comprehension

When the world’s distractions seem
So far away compared
To the thing that’s “In Your Face”
And leaves you feeling scared

Or awkward or uncomfortable
That’s when it will get through
Only then does the concept
Start to hit home with you

It’s why e-mails are ignored
And texts get no response
Why phone calls are often greeted
With aloof nonchalance

But when intense eye contact’s made
And full attention’s aimed
Squarely right between their eyes
And stated unashamed

The listener cannot ignore
The passion of what’s said
That’s why most effective points
Are made close to your head

A Little Help

12 Sep

In appreciation of all of the people who have recently reblogged, shared and spread the word about my writing:

A Little Help

There was a wise man who once sang
Of the means to his ends
He harmonized, “I’ll get by with
A little help from my friends”

There was another sage who had
A “Message” to get home
The line that stuck out most to me:
“I’m nothing on my own”

These brilliant men achieved success
But would have come up short
If they did not have all their friends
To strengthen and support

Now most of us will only think
That means when someone moves
Lifting heavy furniture
And everything that proves

But I think that there’s more to it
It’s in the fine details
Little things we overlook
Picks who succeeds and fails

Moments that were spared so that
We could provide a hand
Even though we were “busy”
Promoting our own brand

A weekday night out at the club
To see a singing pal
Hold a disc release party
And help boost their morale

Taking a minute to call
The local radio
And telling them your friend’s new tune
On the airwaves should go

Grabbing lunch at your friend’s diner
Instead of some franchise
That has over a billion served
And doesn’t need more buys

Picking up a copy of
The book that your friend wrote
And not just that, but telling others
Helping to promote

Spreading word about the talent
That your friends possess
Not just telling other friends
But going to the press

How many have called the news
Or written to a station?
And how many were too “busy”
Planning next vacation?

Just seems to me that most people
Spend just far too much time
On themselves to be able
To help another’s climb

That’s why it’s so good to see
When some creative folks
Go out of their own way to gather,
Influence and coax

Other people who come out
And support their friend’s act
Just a little help from friends
And success will attract

Try Harder

1 Sep

Try Harder

When you try your best and it doesn’t work
And you lose your cool and then go berserk
Try harder

When you make a plan that’s not in the cards
When you’re tackled short of just a few yards
Try harder

When you get a message and you think it can wait
And you put off responding ‘till a later date
Try harder

When you’ve had a bad day that’s pushed you to the brink
And you try to find solace by grabbing a drink
Try harder

When you’re mad at someone ’cause they screwed up once more
And you unload on them with your vengeful roar
Try harder

When you know you should go for a jog or a run
But you stay on the couch because it’s more fun
Try harder

When you’re asked for your help but you tell them “I can’t”
Because you’re so busy you’ve no time to grant
Try harder

When you see something weird and make fun with jokes
‘Cause your personal tastes are not like those folks
Try harder

When you throw in the towel and whimper “I quit!”
‘Cause you can’t bare to take another big hit
Try harder

When you come home from work and just sit on the couch
And spend your evening being a tired grouch
Try harder

When someone you love doesn’t get your attention
When their thoughtfulness doesn’t get any mention
Try harder

When you read or see something that brings up your mood
But you don’t share with others so they’ll feel renewed
Try harder

Later

Later

I don’t have time to write right now
This poem has to wait
I’m busy at the moment with
So darn much on my plate

I’ll reply to that e-mail that
You sent to me last week
When my workload isn’t at
Its utmost busy peak

I got your message and I meant
To call you back about
That thing you said but things came up
That I could not bail out

Got your text, whenever I
Do get the time, I will
Send you back a sentence but
You’ll have to wait until

I get a breather ‘cause I am
So damn busy right now
I barely have the time to wipe
A bead of sweat from brow

If there was in fact a bead
There isn’t, but I feel
Like there is because I’m working
So hard on this deal

I’ll get to everything later
Because at the moment
I’m too busy prioritizing
How my time is spent

Later because I don’t see
That now is the best time
‘Cause I don’t see the more I wait
The harder is the climb

Because I do not recognize
The ideal time to act
Is right away and more I wait
The more things will distract

So give me just a couple days
By then, it will not matter
You won’t care anymore and I
Won’t have the time to chatter

Works out perfectly for both
If it’s put off for later
Well, at least it does for me
If I make you the waiter

But did you get that note *I* sent
It’s crucial we commune!
I need an answer right away
So get back to me soon

Voices

Voices

We live within a world
Where everyone’s a voice
So many different ways
To spread your news of choice

There’s Twitter and there’s Facebook
And many more I’m sure
That haven’t yet attained
The texting world’s allure

But what I’m noticing
As people use their thumbs
To converse with others
Is what discourse becomes

Shorthand simple thoughts
Devoid of depth and meaning
Rushed and to the point
And no time for gleaning

Thoughts thrown out into
A sea of tweeting noise
With iPhones and Blackberrys
And other cordless toys

I got to thinking that
With gadgets such as these
The problem is how much
They make talking a breeze

No more do people call
And speak with vocal chords
Instead there’s just a few
Scarce words you hurl towards

Devoid of inspiration
Or any concise thought
Just what you had for breakfast
And what merch you just bought

Multitudes of voices
Simultaneously
Texting little facts
And no one to see

And the few voices
Whose messages are deep
Get lost among the others
Hid under the heap

That’s why I grab my shovel
And put the blade to soil
Some voices can inspire
But only if you toil

And dig and sweat and maybe
Even grit your teeth
That will lead to finding
The truth that lies beneath
