Pop Culture Poetry: Knight

24 Aug

Knight

He looks up at the sky and sees
No ships above do fly
He looks around his old home world
And feels how hot and dry

The air still is, but what he hears
Is what surprises most
Not a single sound emerges
From dune’s coast to coast

A soft and faint wind tugs at his
Hood pulled over his head
Possibly warning him of
A sand storm up ahead

It quickly fades and then again
It’s absolutely still
He looks up and remembers when
He wished life was a thrill

He wanted adventure and that’s
Exactly what he got
But no matter where he went
On thing was not forgot

The calm and peaceful world where he
Grew up not long ago
He’d always been so restless here
Since life had been so slow

But now that life was speeding by
With no time to reflect
He’d take a moment to recall
His home and pay respect

That was one of the lessons
His new mentor had taught
A chaotic, busy mind
Will leave you just distraught

Calm your mind, let go of things
And be at one with here
So the knight now closed his eyes
And looked on with his ear

He heard the whirring of his droid
And shuffling of feet
Of the golden translator
Trying to flee the heat

In the distance, Sandcrawler
And further still, the raiders
He hoped they headed different ways
For sake of the traders

Beyond that, the palace where
His scoundrel friend was kept
They waited a whole year to strike
While his rogue friend had slept

And even further still, he heard
An unfamiliar voice
“Now go, my son” the gentle man
Said as he did rejoice

The knight opened his eyes and took
A final look around
He cleared his mind again and then
He knelt down to the ground

Beside his little droid and gave
Instructions for his plan
He placed his weapon in the droid
Who he trusted more than

The golden one, who made his way
Back over to his master
Although he meant well, the knight knew
Things would end in disaster

If he was appraised of what
The knight had plotted out
He put a finger to his lips
And little droid did shout

With beeps and whistles confirming
Of what he had to do
“Do what?” golden droid did ask
Wishing that he knew

“Just deliver a message
For me” the knight did say
And so the two droids ventured out
And left the knight to stay

Behind to look up at the sky
And be grateful to see
No Destroyers or dog fights
Above the hot dune sea

Just stillness surrounding him
The kind he once did dread
The kind he hoped to have again
In all his days ahead

Pop Culture Poetry: Rebel

Rebel

He looks up at the sky and sees
A Star Destroyer loom
Obstructed by the smoke drifting
From his home base’s plume

Of smoke, destroyed by giant walkers
He took just one down
It cost him a co-pilot though
He recalls with a frown

The young kid who had just joined them
Excited to take on
The same life of adventure and
Excitement that had drawn

This farmboy from his desert world
Across the galaxy
To this barren and frozen world
Now riddled with debris

Of Echo Base, attacked by those
He had watched in the sky
Had it been just three years since
He wished that he could fly?

He took a moment to let go
Of everything around
As giant walkers still advanced
Continuing to pound

He recalled the old wizard’s words
Before he took the shot
That turned the tide against the foes
And a new hope had brought

“Let go” his mentor said to him
And let go he now did
Just as with his aunt and uncle
And now with this kid

Who thought he’d take them on all by
Himself and win the war
Felt like only moments later
Walker’s lasers tore

Into the speeder and the kid
Adventure at an end
Wouldn’t be the first or last
Time that he lost a friend

As he mounted into the
Cockpit of his X-Wing
There was just one new adventure
To which he did now cling

He’d had enough of laser blasts
And dog fights in deep space
Constantly evading the
Relentless Empire’s chase

Something that the wizard said
To him not long ago
Half frozen to death he saw
His old friend stand aglow

And tell him where to find a great
Warrior who would teach
The ways in which he could help all
Break free from the foe’s reach

He lifted off and sped towards
The blackness of the sky
Hoping that for everyone
The war’s end would be nigh

Pop Culture Poetry: Farmboy

22 Aug

Farmboy

He looks up at the sky and sees
A pair of ships above
Usually his backward world
Is very devoid of

Anything exciting, anything
That’s interesting
You don’t usually see a Star
Destroyer or X-Wing

Soaring through the skies of this
Deserted, dried up ball
Life’s so boring it feels like
It’s moving at a crawl

But his heart races as he sees
The two ships above soar
He stops to watch and forgets of
His Uncle’s assigned chore

Everything can wait, he thinks
He wants to take it in
His excited youthful eyes wonder
Where these two ships have been

Probably across the whole
Galaxy at least twice
He looks down at the sandy ground and thinks
“It would be nice

To fly around in a space ship
And walk across the sky
To see another world that wasn’t
So hot and so dry”

He gets a sudden rush and thinks
“My friends have to see this!”
They’re just as bored as he is and
This battle they can’t miss

He jumps into his speeder and
He races off to find
His friends who are also on this
Hot desert world confined

“One day,” he thinks to himself
“I’ll find a way up there
I’ll walk across the sky while everyone
Down here will stare”

Familiar Blue

Twin suns beat down
As I make my way
To see your boy
To make sure he’s okay

You’ve been gone so long
But you’re with me still
Kind of blame myself
Think I always will

It’s what keeps me going
After all of these years
After all the regret
After all of the tears

I remind myself
It wasn’t you on that shore
Try to recall the man
That you were before

Hero with no fear
My brother, my friend
But the more I remember
The more I descend

Broken down
And all alone
Tired mind
And tired bones

So I walk the Wastes
But I walk so slow
Afraid I’ll fade away
Before it’s time to go

But when I see his eyes
That familiar blue
I see a new hope
to make it up to you

Another chance
To make it all okay
It’s what keeps me going
From day to day

So I’ll keep waiting
Till the time is right
When the darkness falls
To the blinding light

Till the day the force
Brings him in
To be the man
You could have been
