Lovely

Lovely

I see her glide across the room
As if she floats on air
Waves of calmness flowing through
Her silky, amber hair

She sees me peering through left eye
(The right one’s still asleep)
She smiles sweetly and it still
Does make my heartbeat leap

I grunt and groan and lay back down
And wait for aches to pass
As is with every morning
My tank just has no gas

I hear the door open again
And Sweetness brings to me
Something healthy to kick-start
My engine, gluten free!

It’s a bowl of cereal
Chock full of oats and grains
So that I won’t have to add
To my list “stomach pains”

I tell her, “Thanks for cooking” and
She laughs at my remark
Not sarcastic, cynical
Or uncouth, rowdy bark

But a cute giggle, the kind
Only a kid enjoys
Followed by clearing her throat
To regain her poise

She walks up to the mirror to
Get ready for her day
She doesn’t need much makeup since
Beauty’s her natural way

As I eat and wait for all
My joints to activate
I cannot help but notice her
So long and slender trait

Toned, long legs peek out from under
Bathrobe that she wears
I feel a swell of pride to know
About her health she cares

She’s always worked so hard to keep
Herself in tip-top shape
(It’s just a bonus that it often
Leaves my mouth agape)

I hear a crack within her knee
As she walks from the mirror
Just like mine, our kindred joints
Make us feel a bit nearer

As she dresses, I think how
Fortunate is my life
To have a thoughtful lady such as
Her to call my wife

I finish oats and swing my legs
Off of the bed and stand
Having fuel to burn makes it
Easier to command

My unsteady, unbalanced bones
To start off this day’s quest
Thanks, Sweetness, for all you do
To make me feel so blessed

Watering Flowers

15 Sep

“There is no effect more disproportionate to its cause than the happiness bestowed by a small compliment.”  ~Robert Brault

Watering Flowers

There was a flower named Woman
Who, much like other flowers
Needed watering to bloom
But the name of these showers

Were “compliment” and “gratitude”
“Acknowledgement” and “praise”
These simple words of kindness made
This flower’s petals raise

Unfortunate to say the least
That there were very few
Who made the effort to water
These flowers so they grew

The thought was silly to most men
Who felt abashed to say
Anything that would help these
Flowers bloom all the way

Or if they didn’t think it silly
Then they were afraid
That despite good intentions, the
Flower would be dismayed

Harassment, innuendo, or
Some other type of tease
Said only to get something
So they themselves could please

One truth about the world is that
There are so few who speak
Words that are not intended
To be a harsh critique

There are so few who compliment
That any flattery
Will almost always be taken
With elation and glee

“You look nice today,” “I love
What you’ve done with your hair”
“You have a lovely smile,” few men
Ever seem to dare

“You’re beautiful,” “You’re gorgeous,”
“You are stunning,” “You’re so cute”
Every man can say these things
But most of them are mute

But pay attention if you have
The guts to say these things
You men, look closely, see what kind of
Radiance it brings

To Woman’s face when she’s watered
With this kind of affection
The pure smile, the joyful eyes
And rosy, warm complexion

So speak up, men, be Warriors
Not just with swords and spears
But with your words which can be liquid
Life to Woman’s ears
