You Are Loved

17 Nov

You Are Loved

When someone tries to make you feel
As though you do not matter
When someone criticizes what you do
Instead of flatter

When someone tells you to give up
And that you won’t succeed
When someone tries to make your faith
Within yourself recede

When someone who could help chooses
To not show empathy
When someone who could ease your pain
Instead hurts more with glee

When many band together and show
No thought or concern
When all those souls who could have helped
Do nothing except spurn

Remember you are loved by those
Who aren’t made of cold stone
Remember you are loved and that
You are never alone

You are loved by family
Who share your blood and bone
You are loved by friends who care
By picking up the phone

You are loved by survivors
Who know life isn’t fair
You are loved by warriors
Who boldly, bravely dare

You are loved by me because
I know the pain you feel
And since you are a warrior
You’ll endure it with zeal

And most importantly remember
You are loved by YOU
For all the strength and poise and grace
And courage you imbue

In Loving Shape

15 Nov

In Loving Shape

You cannot run a marathon
Unless you’ve done the training
No one’s won an election
Without lots of campaigning

You cannot be well versed on topics
Without much research
Your soul or spirit cannot grow
If confined to one church

In all aspects of life we can’t
Do things we hope to do
Unless we do the work to get
In shape to see it through

Which brings us to the people who
Wish they could show more love
Despite their wants they do not have
Much training to show of

And how does one prepare themselves
To love all selflessly?
By loving themselves just as much
To very same degree

Much of loving lies in caring
Protecting, defending
How can one love others when
To themselves they aren’t tending?

How can someone who abuses
Their bodies with drugs
Or alcohol or cigarettes
Hope to give loving hugs?

How can someone who slowly
Poisons their veins with junk
Clogs their arteries and makes
Their heart strain, lurch and clunk

Hope to care for someone else
And rise to do what’s needed
To take care when their own advice
Goes constantly unheeded?

How can someone not in shape
From loving their own body
Caring for it, protecting
So that it isn’t shoddy

Hope to be in any kind
Of shape to love another?
If you can’t help yourself, how much
Can you do for your brother?

Your sister? Mother? Father? Friend?
Your children and your pets?
The most love you can give is the
Same as your body gets

So show some love and make the choice
That’s not rooted in craving
Physically and mentally
We should ourselves be saving

Not torturing ourselves over
Regrets from the past
And not consuming things that have
Bad effects that will last

Get in loving shape by caring
For your own well-being
Then you’ll start to see your love
For others fully freeing

Ode to Emptiness

26 Dec
Ode to Emptiness

There was a test that I endured ‘bout 15 years ago
I learned, moved on and worked hard for the life that I now know
I haven’t given it much thought but every now and then
I see another person with same challenge to their zen

I’d like to think if I could pass that test then so could they
I try to have faith that they know tomorrow’s a new day
But more and more this term pops up and a voice deep within
Says, “Share your story, share your scars, tell them where you have been”

As much as I don’t feel the need to stroll down memory lane
My conscience tells me there are some who could learn from my pain
And so I’ll tell you of a person I knew long ago
Someone I thought was a loved one but in fact was a foe

It’s only in these recent years that I’ve began to learn
About a certain term that causes empaths great concern
It’s “Narcissist” and in two words, it means “Empty Inside”
Except for all the bad traits such as jealousy and pride

Although I’d like to think that each of us is quite unique
Narcissists are almost clones with minuscule mystique
I’ve read a couple books and watched some ‘gurus’ on the net
And all the commonalities of which they spoke was met

With utter, gobsmacked shock at how identical they are
Narcissists all have the same agenda which will scar
They’re empty so they seek out those who are filled with great passion
While their partner thinks it’s true love, they think it’s simply fashion

Status is what concerns them, what other people think
And that is why their moods can shift as quickly as a wink
There’s no conscience, no voice inside that whispers, “Loyalty”
There is no heart that says, “Let’s walk their path with empathy”

Agenda is how they attempt to fill their empty void
And they don’t care who it leaves scarred, distraught, sad or destroyed
They’re disconnected creatures who use others as supply
And they can move shockingly quick when their victim runs dry

I see so many loving folks struggle with how they feel
I see so many genuine kind souls with this ordeal
I see them question themselves since it can’t be their ex mate
Take it from a survivor: your lost love’s filled with hate

And bitterness, hostility, disgust, distrust and scorn
And they sought out what they don’t have, something with which you’re born
They lack a soul and so they think proximity will help
While “gaslighting” their partner into a mistreated whelp

They’re very clever at it which is why so many want
To get back with tormentor who they think is confidant
I’ll give the same advice as all the gurus give as well:
Walk on, stay away, shut up and steer clear of that hell

‘Cause that is all that waits for you if you try to make peace
Narcissists don’t gain unless another does decrease
You’ll never hear a “Sorry” from them said, but if you do
Listen carefully, look close, and you’ll *feel* it’s not true

Of my own journey I can say that when we spoke years later
The ‘narc’ that I once knew was still a jealous, petty hater
Competitive and still concerned with prestige and esteem
Bragging and obsessed with all things trendy and mainstream

Sad, I thought, and more we spoke, the more it felt like old
Though years change most, for narcissists three decades won’t remold
They’re stuck the way they are, empty and always seeking source
Sucking partners dry and then filing for a divorce

Moving on the same day with no heart mending required
Genuine connections? No dear, that’s not how they’re wired
Some will have a child which they’ll use as their supply
Siphoning the joy from all the apples of their eye

Move on and use your time to find someone who’s more like you
As hard as it may be to trust, here is what I went through:
I chose to let it go and I got busy with my life
I met a girl, I fell in love, and soon made her my wife

We’ve shared a special love for 15 years and every day
I’ve kissed her, hugged her, said, “I love you” and she’s the same way
Every day, my dears, has felt like heaven here on Earth
And maybe that’s because with narcissists, there is no mirth

Maybe it’s because with narcissists, you live in hell
Constantly harassed with doubt and insults as they yell
I do assure you that it’s not normal for one who claims
To love you to bombard you with such hate as they spew flames

Be honest with yourself and show *yourself* love you deserve
Break the chains, burn the bridge and sever that raw nerve
Don’t dwell on what they did or said, there’s more where that came from
To be around such parasites will only leave you numb

Have the faith that you will find someone after your heart
And have the brains to circumvent those who tear you apart
Learn about the beast known as “the narcissist” and then
You’ll recognize their games and will not fall for them again

Greatness

11 Jul

In loving memory of Muhammad Ali.

Greatness

There once was a man from Kentucky
This Louisville Lip was quite plucky
Like a bee he would sting
Inside the squared ring
And not one person claimed he was lucky

With skill and with heart he would win
Throwing jabs and big hooks to the chin
He won millions of hearts
With his brawn and his smarts
Not to mention his infectious grin

But the public opinion did sway
When the government one day did say:
“You must go overseas
And must kill our foes, please”
But that didn’t sit right with young Clay

They accused him of being just yellow
“Draft dodger!” they all called this fellow
But young Clay, now Ali
Did not dodge, duck or flee
He showed up to the draft and did bellow

“No thank you,” he told them and stood
By his ideals of mercy and good
They warned of the price
Which he said would suffice
In order to do what he should

They took away his boxing belt
And his wallet a big blow was dealt
They had cut his prime short
But they could never thwart
This great man’s choice which was so heartfelt

Years would go by and the hate
Would soften and folks did see straight
In hindsight they saw
No fear, fright or flaw
Years later they called Ali, “Great”

For greatness is making a choice
And then never betraying that voice
That says, “Stand for what’s right”
Though consequences might
Cause some to no longer rejoice

Today we remember with love
The greatest to lace up a glove
But we must also recall
That the cost wasn’t small
Sacrifice is what greatness is made of

Stepping Back

Stepping Back

The world’s become a smaller place, or rather it would seem
Thanks to wi-fi internet and video live stream
Instant tweets and Instagram and Facebook posts from those
Who suffer pain and use their phone to share all of their woes

We are indeed connected, each and every person here
But viewing hi-res images of events that aren’t near
Are causing a perspective loss, there’s folks who carry grief
For things half-way around the world with misguided belief

That there is something they can do by ranting or despairing
By hash-tagging and vlogging and by liking and by sharing
Focused half-way ‘round the world and not on what is near
Not present and not aware of their place on this sphere

Perhaps it’s time for stepping back from these world-wide events
These overwhelming weekly travesties that make no sense
Maybe it’s simply too much to know what’s happening
In every dark corner of Earth, each terrible, grim thing

Perhaps the wide-spread stress, anxiety and angst we feel
Is caused by what’s trending and in our newsfeed and newsreel
Perhaps it’s time to step back and be present where we are
Focus on the loved ones near, not strangers who are far

Perhaps it’s time to be aware of local matters more
That we can influence instead of some overseas war
Perhaps it’s time to turn the news off, edit feed, log out
Turn phone off and have local faith instead of global doubt

Deny Empower Deny

Deny Empower Deny

A misguided approach to dealing with things which pose threat
Or harm, discomfort, hardship, displeasure, distress or fret
Is to deny, ignore, avoid, to bury head in sand
To run away from all the things you think you cannot stand

It’s my pleasure to tell you, dears, that you are very wrong
Those things you think you can’t handle are really not that strong
If you would just confront, engage, clear mind and make contact
Denying just empowers all your fears, that is a fact

Now there will be the fools who misinterpret and will think
That means you should indulge in self-destruction such as drink
And drugs but no, it’s not about a substance, it’s a feeling
That angst, anxiety or stress that comes at thought of dealing

With someone or something which causes you to run and hide
I challenge you for the next time to move forward, collide
Meet it and experience with something more than dread
With empathy instead of ego’s whispers in your head

In my experience when I have chosen to engage
Instead of run away the result wasn’t pain or rage
I learned just how weak that thing was that I thought had such power
Because I no longer denied, it was them who did cower

And places which would cause me dread became my forge of flame
Strengthening and honing the Warrior that I became
I no longer avoid a single person, thing or place
Because experience has taught me that when I embrace

The truth’s revealed and all those things which I thought would subtract
My joy and peace were only strong because I’d always backed
“Oh no” is why each demon lives to haunt your waking days
“Ok” is how to sap its power and make your own raise

The Time That’s Left

The Time That’s Left

A quirky twist of fate to be imbued with the belief
That we will live forever, yet our time on Earth is brief
We make bold declarations that “Tomorrow, things will change!
Tomorrow the battle begins! I’ll plan and rearrange!”

Procrastinating since we think because we’ve lived this long
Precedent would prove that we’ll for many years prolong
While all the truths which do dispel this naive ignorance
Are scoffed at, scorned, evaded or met with indifference

“Healthy” people dying of a heart attack at fifty
Time cut short despite their abstinence from drugs and whisky
Young lives cut too short because a mishap with car
Fate ignores how talented they were with a guitar

Children filled with love and life and innocence close eyes
And breathe their final breath despite their mothers’ prayers and cries
In one quick blink the life that was is now longer there
And though we witness death each year, so few seem to beware

“Tomorrow this, tomorrow that” despite constant reminders
“Tomorrow” is not guaranteed regardless of your blinders
So live for something that in fact you do possess right now:
This moment, wake up, look around, breathe deep, my dears, somehow

Be present and get up and do the things you have delayed
Revel in the chance, the gift and do not be afraid
The time that’s left is not something to look upon in fear
The seconds that remain are something to love and revere

Time is almost up, my dears, get up and make the most
May I remind that very soon your spirit leaves its host?
And what will the survivors say? That you just sat and thought?
Or that you were a Warrior and PUSHED and STRIVED and FOUGHT?
