Light in the Darkness

11 Feb

Light in the Darkness

I hear a lot of folks complain
Of darkness in the world
How negative things have become
And hate that has unfurled

I see them fold their arms across
Their chest and just bemoan
Never doing anything
To change the world’s dark tone

“It’s hopeless!” they often declare
“What difference can I make?”
And that, my friends, is what is wrong
With folks who bellyache

They cannot fathom how one light
One tiny little flame
When lit up in pitch black rooms
Can so much darkness tame

There was a man two thousand years
Ago who was a light
And headlong did He walk into
The darkness of the night

He did not whine about how bad
That people treated Him
He didn’t sit and fold His arms
And let His candle dim

His name was Jesus and He was
The light in the darkness
No matter how much it enveloped
His light would not suppress

He taught people to not just hide
Away from all the gloom
But to enter into the
Most dark and somber room

To take their hope and faith and light
Into the darkest place
And let that light act as a torch
Illuminating grace

Casting out shadows of doubt
And silencing man’s greed
Acting as a beacon of
The hope that we all need

You cannot just sit by and wait
For your way to be lit
Your path can be made clear by light
That you yourself emit

You may work at a dreary job
With melancholy peers
But it will make no difference
If you go change careers

No matter where you choose to be
There will always be those
Who are the darkness in the room
And cast on you their woes

There may be some within your tribe
Who grumble and dissent
But in optimism’s light
Their darkness will relent

So don’t snuff out your flame of hope
And say it’s all for naught
Follow the shining example
That the Saviour taught

Go headlong into the night
And cast your brilliant glow
Just as the great King of Kings
Did all those years ago

Your light may not burn quite as long
As you may hope it to
But the flash left on their eyes
Will always imbue

And inspire others to
Spread their light to the dark
Sometimes all you need to see
Is just a little spark

Light or Dark?

28 Oct

When people ask me how I am, I’ve taken to saying, “Unstoppable.” Our word choice matters, and something as simple as “Good” or “Not good” can cast light or darkness into the world. Don’t ever succumb and wallow in self-pity, because you never know who’s watching and listening. Inspired by a conversation I just had with an old friend who’s dealing with a severe leg and back injury. At the beginning of our conversation, he said he was doing badly. By the end, he said “I’m good. I’m great!” Stay in the light…

Light or Dark?

When hardships rear their ugly head
And dig their fangs in deep
Will you cast light out to the world?
Or will you only weep?

When challenges arise and cause
The loss of things held dear
Will you be grace’s example?
Or will you broadcast fear?

When troubled times befall us
It is easy to forget
That others can see us as we
Worry, suffer and fret

But if we keep in mind that eyes
Are always turned our way
It helps to remind us that all
The words we choose to say

Can cast a light onto this world
Instead of casting dark
To say, “I’m doing horrible”
To whine, complain and bark

Just causes more to be afraid
To worry what could be
“What if that horrible thing
One day happens to me?”

But if we choose to be the light
To let it go and say
“This is just another test
It won’t cause me dismay”

It will inspire others to
Look at their own distress
And have the courage to engage
To confront, to address

While keeping cool, while keeping calm
While maintaining their grace
“That warrior survived his own
Struggle without a trace

Of fear or doubt or misery
So I too will emit
A light of strength and grace and not
To the darkness submit”

Truth Hurts

Truth Hurts

I sat in darkness for a while
Comfortable, I thought
Details sharp, or so it seemed
‘Till one day I was taught

That what I had believed was full
Vision was true blindness
A mentor entered my life and
He caused me lots of stress

He pulled the blinds up and the light
Did hurt so intensely
“The truth can be quite painful for
All those who could not see”

I scolded him and cursed his name
“How dare you upset me?”
“Exactly,” he said with a smile
“I dare to set you free

Most would have you sit in darkness
Scared to pull the blinds
Fearful of hurting your feelings
Frightened, selfish minds

I have no qualms with riling you
‘Cause I know for a fact
It was painful for me as well
To find out what I lacked

I’m not concerned about your hurt
‘Cause I know it won’t last
Soon your eyes will focus and
You will not be aghast

Instead you will be grateful for
The chance to see things how
They were truly intended
When the light you allow

To fully shine through your window
Illuminating all
But it always takes someone
Who has a little gall

To not worry about upsetting
Your little ego
Silly fool, don’t you know it
Takes discomfort to grow?”

“You’re welcome” he said before my
Ego could muster ”thanks”
And off he went into the light
To combine with the ranks

Of the very few people
That had the guts to tell
The hurtful truth because they just
Wanted me to excel

Highlight

18 Nov

Highlight

A healthy exercise is to
Look back upon your day
At all the things you did and then
With all your vigor say:

“This one thing’s the highlight of
My last twenty-four hours
It reflects what I can do
When I use all my powers

My concentration, focus and
My courage and resolve
This one highlight is another
Step to help evolve

Into something stronger, faster
Wiser, more aware
It shows that I am trying hard
It shows that I do care”

I challenge you to do it now
Look back on yesterday
Was there one bright, shining spot
Or was it all just grey?

Did you make an effort to
Illuminate one thing?
Or did you let the ball blow by
Without taking a swing?

I challenge you to make damn sure
That when the day is done
And you go search for your highlight
That you have more than one

I challenge you to have your pick
From several different cases
Where you overcame your fear
Or displayed your good graces

Do not dwell on dark, low points
It’s best to let those go
And instead please focus on
Points that emit a glow

Circle of Light

4 Oct

Circle of Light

Tell me if this sounds familiar:
“Everyone I know
Is so negative and all
They do is bring me low

I wish that I knew more people
Filled with some hope and light
But everyone in my circle
Is filled with scorn and spite”

Most of us have felt like that
At one time or another
Surrounded by cutthroats and
Without a single brother

The key is realizing that
You have the power to
Illuminate your circle if
You resolve to pursue

If you make an effort to
Seek out new people that
Can provide you more than just
Some superficial chat

Odds are that you already
Know quite a few of them
But they do not come to mind
Because those that condemn

Are so much louder and garner
More of your attention
They serve to wipe out all your peace
With all their apprehension

Pay no mind, those who distract
Don’t let them sour you
Don’t let their failings project
On someone that is new

Let go of your pre-conceived
Notions which may impede
Your efforts to enlighten your
Circle once filled with greed

And jealousy and pettiness
And ego, anger, tripe
Clean the slate and seek out friends
Defined by a new type

People filled with courage who
Can motivate you to
Let go of your doubts and do
All of the things they do

People who inspire you
To try harder each day
To fight the good fight every moment
Every single way

People you can support and
Who will reciprocate
Who know that friendship is a circle
Not a line that’s straight

So if you find yourself surrounded
By a darkened ring
Seek out positive people
Because their light will bring

The hope and energy you need
To make your circle glow
It all begins with a smile
A handshake and “Hello”
