The Scorpion and the Frog

16 Nov

The Scorpion and the Frog

There was a frog who swam along
The river one fine day
He came upon a scorpion
On the shore in dismay

“What seems to be the trouble?”
The frog asked with some concern
“I need to cross the river!”
The sharp-tip tailed one did yearn

“Would you be so kind and give
A ride upon your back?”
The frog thought, then thought twice, then thrice
And cautiously said back:

“I’m not so sure that would be wise
I fear that you would sting
And I would sink and drown since I’m not
Much for snorkeling

“Don’t be silly!” the scorpion said
“I’d sink along with you!
I can’t swim or breathe submerged
To do so, I’D be through!”

“Hmmm,” the frog thought to himself
“That’s true, you’d drown as well
Ok, I’m always pleased to help
Climb on board for a spell!”

“Thank you!” scorpion said with joy
And creeped upon the back
‘Bout halfway ‘cross the river
The passenger did attack

The tail snapped down and stinger pierced
The frog and he went numb
“Why?” he asked with shock and sank
Surprised at the outcome

“Because,” the scorpion replied
With apathy so cold
“I am a scorpion, it’s in my nature
In my mould”

“But you’ll drown too!” the frog gurgled
As they hit river bed
“It’s what I do, I cannot change”
And soon they both were dead

You’re vs Your

16 Jan

“Me fail english? Thats unpossible.” ~Ralph Wiggum

You’re vs Your

It’s gotten out of hand, I just
Can’t take it anymore
Does anyone still remember
How to use “you’re” and “your?”

If I see one more person write
“Your funny” on the net
I may do something with my laptop
That I will regret

It’s not “you’re house” or “you’re city”
Nor is it “your welcome”
I’m being so bombarded that
I feel I’ll soon succumb

To using these improperly
Because of sheer exposure
It’s enough to make you lose
All of you’re composure

Because your constantly seeing
No one give a care
How did proper grammar become
So extremely rare?

You’re average Joe just can’t seem to
Grasp simple concepts like
Abbreviating “you are” by
Making “a” take a hike

And separating both the sides
With an apostrophe
What’s the matter, don’t have enough
Time to find that key?

Is it missing from you’re phone?
Or maybe your too busy?
Wait a second, is that right?
I’m feeling a bit dizzy

I think I’ll go and lie down while
Your reading this here ballad
And if you’re built-in spell check thinks
That my grammar is valid

If your finished reading this
And can’t find my mistakes
If nothing here seems incorrect
If you’re head never shakes

I’ll firmly plant my face inside
My palm to show the fail
Because my sarcastic lesson
Has been to no avail

Truth Hurts

Truth Hurts

I sat in darkness for a while
Comfortable, I thought
Details sharp, or so it seemed
‘Till one day I was taught

That what I had believed was full
Vision was true blindness
A mentor entered my life and
He caused me lots of stress

He pulled the blinds up and the light
Did hurt so intensely
“The truth can be quite painful for
All those who could not see”

I scolded him and cursed his name
“How dare you upset me?”
“Exactly,” he said with a smile
“I dare to set you free

Most would have you sit in darkness
Scared to pull the blinds
Fearful of hurting your feelings
Frightened, selfish minds

I have no qualms with riling you
‘Cause I know for a fact
It was painful for me as well
To find out what I lacked

I’m not concerned about your hurt
‘Cause I know it won’t last
Soon your eyes will focus and
You will not be aghast

Instead you will be grateful for
The chance to see things how
They were truly intended
When the light you allow

To fully shine through your window
Illuminating all
But it always takes someone
Who has a little gall

To not worry about upsetting
Your little ego
Silly fool, don’t you know it
Takes discomfort to grow?”

“You’re welcome” he said before my
Ego could muster ”thanks”
And off he went into the light
To combine with the ranks

Of the very few people
That had the guts to tell
The hurtful truth because they just
Wanted me to excel

What Goes Around

What Goes Around

A couple years ago, someone
Had opportunity
To help me out but didn’t ‘cause
They were just too busy

They say that things that go around
Will some day come around
Two years later, this came true
When this person had found

Me at the exact same place
That they had been before
And there they stood where I had been
Outside of a locked door

The irony was lost on me
Until they started speaking
Talking of the screw-up that
Had led them to now seeking

Entry into this building
The same one that I tried
To get into two years ago
But no one would abide

Every reason that they gave
To be allowed access
Was the same that I had given
But to no success

They smirked and said, “Sorry, can’t help
There must be reasons why
You can’t get into today so all
We have to say is ‘Bye!’”

As I tried to point out how
The situations echoed
This person seemed to think that they
Had something to them owed

Owed for doing nothing when
I came to them for aid?
Owed because they wouldn’t help me
Get through the blockade?

That was caused by someone who
Had made a big mistake?
Owed because when they could help
Instead they chose forsake?

I calmly said, “You know the rules
You’ve followed them so well”
And walked away, and that’s when they
Proceeded then to yell

“Are you fucking kidding me?!”
This classless person said
As they stood dumbfounded while
The irony did spread

Gape-jawed, stunned, oblivious
That what had just transpired
Was what I experienced
When others had conspired

“Sorry, can’t help, there must be
Reasons why,” I said
But since I had once walked that mile
More lightly did I tread

I didn’t mock or take pot shots
I didn’t smirk and chuckle
I didn’t take enjoyment in
Twisting in the knuckle

‘Cause I remembered how ugly
All those that took their joy
In mocking me were on that day
How much it did annoy

Be sure to leave revenge out of
The lessons that you teach
Enjoyment from one’s suffering
Will just negate your speech

But at the same time, don’t back down
Have courage to say “No”
Sometimes it’s unpopular
When you help others grow

I don’t know if it’s God at work
Or serendipity
But this experience has left me
Feeling somewhat free

Of the injustice that happened
And was never addressed
Where they all had shown their worst
I chose to show my best

Where they screamed and swore and stressed
I managed to keep cool
Where I waited patiently
They acted like a fool

Just remember, sometimes it’s
Uncomfortable to walk
In another’s shoes, so when
They do, try not to mock
