Humanly Possible

Humanly Possible

“Only human” people say and think we’re all the same
That when it comes to discipline, we all must have low aim
One person gets discouraged and thinks, “No one could succeed!”
They think that their own shortcomings apply to the whole breed

“Only human” I have heard until it’s made me sick
“Only human” from the lazy, close-minded and thick
“Only human” from the ones who grew up with excess
“Only human” from those who think only God can bless

I recognized my shortcomings both in body and mind
Before my grey hairs had grown in but unlike most, declined
To excuse all my weakness as the limits of my race
Instead of shrugging, “Only human” like a weak disgrace

I sought out other humans, both alive and from the past
Whose strength, intensity, resolve and fortitude was vast
I did the work and hunted them, pursued without relent
I sniffed them out by tracking their indomitable scent

And while the lazy sensitives grew wider and more frail
And followed other wimps, I found the WARRIORS to hail
Samurai and knights, soldiers, mystics, a Savior too
Who kept his GRACE while being KILLED (“only human” like YOU)

Time and time again I found these humans who did hone
Their minds to steel, bodies to rock and fire in their bone
I saw what lack of passion did: love handles and a gut
Excess making body weak and mind stuck in a rut

And I compared that laziness and excess to the Lords
The Warriors, the Kings, the humans who all worked towards
Pushing limits, being more and choosing what they feel
Refusing to give up control, to whine, to cry, to kneel

“Only human” say the ones who sit and wait and think
“This is it” and never push their limits to their brink
But there are some who chose to stand, to run and to believe
“Human possibility” is not something to grieve

Arm Yourself

Arm Yourself

When you got up out of bed
Were you fully aware
That there may be some troubles
Ahead you’ll have to bare?

When you swung your legs to floor
Did you prepare yourself
By grabbing all the weapons that
You’ll need off of your shelf?

It’s true, we do not live in times
Of knights and swords and shields
But for modern warriors
The battle never yields

Gone are raiders, hordes and armies
That attack our towns
We are no longer ruled by
The ones who wear gold crowns

Still there are the challenges
That attack every day
And just like knights, we must be armed
Before we enter fray

The weapons that we need to fight
The battles going on
Are not axes or swords or spears
Or any kind of brawn

Patience is the weapon that
We should all reach for first
It will defend effectively
Against all of life’s worst

Understanding is another
Weapon we should take
Without it, we may soon find that
More squabbles we will make

A peaceful heart will serve us well
Whenever someone thinks
That it’s an opportune time
To fight after some drinks

And finally, equip yourself
With the mentality
Of a warrior who doesn’t
Cower and then flee

A warrior does not turn tail
A warrior stands fast
A warrior endures the storm
Whenever they’re harassed

Traffic, weather, imbeciles
Without a lick of sense
Morons who get on our nerves
And make us feel so tense

If we do not arm the tools
To parry their attacks
Metaphorically speaking
We’ll end up on our backs

But if we woke and realized
A battle was ahead
If we armed ourselves right after
We got out of bed

The challenges we’ll face won’t have
An easy time upsetting
The bigger weapons you equip
The less you will be fretting

Arm yourselves!

Let me beat my chest a bit
In Warrior-like fashion
About a group for which I don’t
Have all that much compassion

I mainly speak of love and strength
And optimistic things
But that does not mean I just see
The works of knights and kings

Though I don’t dwell on the acts
Of those who aren’t their best
I’ve ignored them long enough
It’s time they were addressed

Cowards are the focus of
Today’s rhyming essay
The kind of people who will turn
And run to get away

Cowards think just of themselves
Their own comfort and bliss
Speed bumps that get in the way
A Coward can’t dismiss

They complain about problems
That happen every day
Get down in the dumps instead of
Charging through the fray

Cowards run away and leave
Their family and their friends
Without the thought of who will be
The one who now defends

Cowards will look left and right
To see what others think
If someone voices discontent
The Coward will then blink

Cowards want an easy fix
To make them feel all better
They cannot do it on their own
The Coward’s not a sweater

You’ll never see it trickle down
The temple of their face
Unless the bead is made of fear
A trait they can’t erase

A Coward is afraid of losing
All material things
A Coward is a puppet who
Cannot get free of strings

Cowards always think the worst
They are devoid of hope
They don’t know how to deal with it
They don’t know how to cope

Cowards have no passion in
Themselves to give them strength
They like to keep safety close by
And hazard at arm’s length

Cowards cannot take the blame
For mistakes they have made
Their comfort would be ruined by
The price that must be paid

Cowards are so lazy that
They don’t often get out
And the few that do just spend
The time to bitch and pout

Cowards are so busy and
Don’t have the time to see
That if they just tried to make time
A Warrior they’d be

If they stopped running away
And faced the chasing dread
If they fought with all their might
The Coward’s skin would shed

If they filled themselves with hope
And faith and discipline
If they recognized that all
Those traits come from within

Then they’d see that Cowardice
Won’t get them anywhere
The only way to beat it is
To walk into Fear’s lair

Beat your chest and say “I’m here!
Come give me your best hit!
No matter what you throw at me
This Warrior won’t quit!”
