Light in the Darkness

11 Feb

Light in the Darkness

I hear a lot of folks complain
Of darkness in the world
How negative things have become
And hate that has unfurled

I see them fold their arms across
Their chest and just bemoan
Never doing anything
To change the world’s dark tone

“It’s hopeless!” they often declare
“What difference can I make?”
And that, my friends, is what is wrong
With folks who bellyache

They cannot fathom how one light
One tiny little flame
When lit up in pitch black rooms
Can so much darkness tame

There was a man two thousand years
Ago who was a light
And headlong did He walk into
The darkness of the night

He did not whine about how bad
That people treated Him
He didn’t sit and fold His arms
And let His candle dim

His name was Jesus and He was
The light in the darkness
No matter how much it enveloped
His light would not suppress

He taught people to not just hide
Away from all the gloom
But to enter into the
Most dark and somber room

To take their hope and faith and light
Into the darkest place
And let that light act as a torch
Illuminating grace

Casting out shadows of doubt
And silencing man’s greed
Acting as a beacon of
The hope that we all need

You cannot just sit by and wait
For your way to be lit
Your path can be made clear by light
That you yourself emit

You may work at a dreary job
With melancholy peers
But it will make no difference
If you go change careers

No matter where you choose to be
There will always be those
Who are the darkness in the room
And cast on you their woes

There may be some within your tribe
Who grumble and dissent
But in optimism’s light
Their darkness will relent

So don’t snuff out your flame of hope
And say it’s all for naught
Follow the shining example
That the Saviour taught

Go headlong into the night
And cast your brilliant glow
Just as the great King of Kings
Did all those years ago

Your light may not burn quite as long
As you may hope it to
But the flash left on their eyes
Will always imbue

And inspire others to
Spread their light to the dark
Sometimes all you need to see
Is just a little spark

Jesus Walked

6 Mar

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” ~Jesus Christ

Jesus Walked

I’ve never been too keen on going
To a single place
Every single week to pray
And worship the Lord’s grace

Churches have just always seemed
A bit monotonous
A bit too easy, too familiar
And too little fuss

I started thinking about how
The Savior didn’t go
To the same building each week
To make His parish grow

Jesus walked and came to those
Who needed strength and hope
Jesus walked to heal the sick
And help downtrodden cope

Jesus walked and didn’t have
A set weekly routine
Jesus walked which kept His legs
As well as His faith lean

Explore, venture, get off the beaten
Path you always travel
Forgo the comfortable paved roads
And set out on the gravel

Walk out of your comfort zone
And change, adapt, discover
Only when you look in new
Places will you uncover

New people, new challenges
New things to overcome
Enliven all those senses which
Have grown tired and numb

Follow in the footsteps of
The Savior and start walking
You weren’t meant to simply sit
And listen to some talking

If you’re blessed with legs then walk
And put your faith in motion
Sitting and listening doesn’t
Take any devotion

Don’t just hark on what Christ said
Take heed of what He did
Jesus never stayed put and
He surely never hid

Think about it next time you
Get in your car and drive
Down to church, just ask yourself
“Is this how people thrive?”

Maybe you’d be better off
To stretch your legs instead
And put to use all the things in
The Bible you have read

Clique

8 Jan

“They don’t join cliques — more times than not, they stand alone — but they recognize and gravitate towards one another. Only warriors understand other warriors.” ~Forrest E. Morgan

Clique

I’ve never been a fan of cliques
When folks have little groups
Of people that they know real well
Their comfortable small troupes

They form their inner circles where
They work and where they pray
It’s only folks they recognize
They’ll give the time of day

They do not welcome strangers in
With warmth and fearlessness
They don’t want to know more people
Instead, they do want less

Illumination came to me
When I spoke to someone
Who told me that because he was
So busy, he would shun

He only had time for himself
And those that he called “friend”
He made it clear he didn’t want
His circle to extend

And so each time he met someone
He didn’t recognize
His walls went up because he didn’t
Want some more allies

I find the whole thing even sadder
Since he follows Christ
A man who’s greeting to others
Was never, ever iced

Christ welcomed all with open arms
Embraced, invited in
He didn’t say “Sorry, I’d like
To keep my circle thin”

“Jesus Christ” is what I think
When I do think about
All the people who do not
Let their little cliques sprout

“Jesus Christ” is what I think
When I see Christians who
Do not go the extra mile
When they do greet you

“Jesus Christ” is what I think
When I see those with fear
Too afraid to open up
And hold new people dear

‘Cause Jesus Christ was fearless, loving
Trusting and intending
To add everyone to his clique
And keep the group extending

Zealot

21 Dec

“I think while zealots fast and frown, And fight for two or seven,
That there are fifty roads to town, and rather more to Heaven”
                                                                             ~Winthrop Mackworth Praed

Zealot

Zealot is a word for those
Who think there’s just one way
They promote fear and coming doom
In every word they say

I know a zealot who claims to
Have been saved by the Christ
But instead of words with much love
His words are always iced

He warns how everything we do
Is sinful in God’s eyes
How things that bring us hope and joy
Will lead to our demise

Case in point, this zealot says
That Jesus hates Christmas
“A pagan holiday that should
Not bring joy, only stress!”

I don’t exaggerate, he used
The word “hate” to describe
A feeling that the Savior had
Towards the Christmas vibe

And therein lies the truth about
All those who do preach doom
This warrior knows very well
And needs not to presume

That Jesus Christ did not feel hate
Not even on the cross
He did not hate His murderers
While suffering blood loss

He looked towards His Father and
Asked forgiveness of them
He didn’t spew doom and gloom and
Not once did He condemn

He asked his Father, “Where are you?”
When He felt hurt and pain
He got His answer three days later
And began His reign

The zealot doesn’t think of this
When they do walk the street
And shouting loud “The end is nigh!”
To everyone they meet

Instead of scrutinizing everyone
Else in the world
At themselves their scrutiny
Should be zealously hurled

Did their Savior shout at folks?
Did He use rage and hate?
Did Jesus threaten and disrupt
Did He taunt and berate?

I see Jesus for what He was
A source of love and grace
Of patience, understanding and
Much light in this dark place

And people who would take a day
Like Christmas which brings many
Peace and love and joy and say
That it should not bring any

Are adding to the darkness that
The Savior tried to light
You don’t add any love when you
Just rile and incite

If the zealot wants to help
They should try to speak less
And do a little more to clean
The world up of its mess

‘Cause actions speak louder than words
The Savior taught us this
So what’s the best way to show love
With warnings or a kiss?

Why Would You?

16 Dec

Why Would You?

Why would anyone attempt
To make fun of the Lord?
Who would try to belittle
A being so adored?

What does it say about the
Person who pokes their fun?
Who disrespects and shows contempt
For the Lord’s only son?

Why would anyone tear down
A symbol of such grace
A source of inspiration in
This dark and selfish place?

Why would someone berate one
As wise as Buddha was?
Is the only reason that
It’s simply what one does

When they come in contact with
Religion not their own?
Don’t they realize that faith
Goes deeper than the bone?

That when they trash talk Islam or
Talk bad of about the Jews
The Hindus, Taoists, or Shamans
They’re showing that their views

Are disrespectful to the soul
Because faith is a line
You do not cross when making jokes
It is how we define

Ourselves in everything we do
Our source of endless hope
A person’s faith is often what
Makes them able to cope

So everyone that cracks their jokes
With “harmless blasphemy”
Regardless of what God you follow
Or if you’re faith-free

Choose your words quite carefully
And with your steps be cautious
‘Cause jokes you think are so funny
Might make the faithful nauseous

And think about what’s causing you
To make light of what drives
So many to live peaceful
Loving and selfless lives

Tool-Less

12 Oct

Tool-Less

I spoke the other day about
How calendar does not
Decide when one’s a warrior
And neither does the spot

Another thing that doesn’t rule
On who’s a warrior
Is weapon, tool, instrument or
However you refer

To something that one must employ
In order to be that
A baseball player isn’t one
Unless he has a bat

A pitcher isn’t more than someone
Just standing around
Unless he has a ball to throw
And stands atop a mound

A hockey player needs his skates
To do the thing he is
A student isn’t one unless
He has to take a quiz

Writers cannot claim to be
Unless they have a way
Of taking down and recording
All of the things they say

Artists need their brushes and
Their canvases and clay
Dancers need their music on
And actors need their play

Musicians can make no music
Without drums and guitars
Even alcoholics can’t
Get drunk without their bars

On and on I see people
Who are by tools defined
I think of what I am and it
Gives me great peace of mind

I am a warrior and I
Don’t need a sword or shield
In any situation it’s
My own strength that I wield

My patience, grace, my fortitude
And my intensity
Aren’t dependent on if I
Have electricity

My supply of focus and
Courage will not run low
My resolve and my balance
Aren’t funded by my dough

You’re given everything that you
Require at your birth
Don’t believe materialistic
Things define your worth

The most important thing to be
Is tool-less in an age
Where everyone uses them to
Evaluate and gauge

“What you see is what you get”
Is our mentality
Warriors rely on what’s
Inside and are tool-free

Judgement

10 Oct

Judgement

It’s written in the Bible
Book of Matthew, seventh verse:
“Judge not lest ye be judged” and many
Do seem to rehearse

These words whenever someone has
A thought or observation
The truth is that on judgement this is
Not the sole quotation

“Open thy mouth, judge righteously
And plead the needy’s cause”
Proverbs thirty-one and nine
Commanding to show flaws

In Luke verse seven:fourty-three
Jesus gave Simon praise
He said “Thou hast rightly judged” when
He heard of Simon’s ways

Thirty-seventh verse of Psalms:
“The mouth of righteous speak
Wisdom and his tongue talketh
Of judgement,” not the weak

Later, in Psalms one-nineteen
Ezekiel twenty-two
Two:fifteen Corinthians
Has this enlightening view:

“But he that is spiritual
May judgeth all things, yet
He himself another man’s
Judgement will not beget”

The point to all of this is that
When someone grabs a Bible
Says “Judge not lest ye be judged”
Or warns of speaking libel

We must recall that verse was for
A certain situation
In that moment, he who judged
Himself had more damnation

The fear of judging because we
May be judged in return
Should be swapped with the desire
To attain, to earn

To try our very best in all
The things we do attempt
And not just sit on the sidelines
And hope we are exempt

To stay silent and be free of
The judgement of the Lord
It’s not a warrior’s purpose
To hide and be ignored

I do my best with every day
That He has given me
I use all of my passion to
Be all that I can be

I try harder each chance I get
To build my strength and poise
I concentrate, I focus and
I let go of the noise

I’m not driven by my ego
Not by my pride and greed
I’m driven by service to others
The warrior’s old creed

I judge the ones who I can tell
Are not trying their best
The ones who quit, the ones who cry
The ones who get so stressed

The ones who are so self-absorbed
The ones who just tear down
The ones who have so much to be
Thankful for, yet they frown

I’ll show some leniency for all
I judge except for one;
The man I see in the mirror
Gets absolutely none

And when the day comes when I will
Be brought before my Judge
I will have nothing to fear since
I do not hold a grudge

I hold no ill will for the ones
Who’ve failed me, who did lie
For anyone who gave up or
Did not bother to try

I’ll stand with confidence by all
The things that I have done
A warrior is self-assured
And does not turn and run

Because my Judge will not be able
To shed any light
On any weakness that I didn’t
Always try to fight

So next time that you’re warned to not
Be judgemental, take heed
Of if the speaker is using
The scripture to mislead

And if they warn because they have
A fear to be judged too
Would they seem uncomfortable
With their life on review?

And have you lived your own life with
All of your heart and soul?
Are you content to look back on
Your journey as a whole?

If you lived a warrior
Fearless, courageous, brave
Then you have nothing to fear
What lies beyond the grave

You know within your heart of hearts
What’s right, what’s good, what’s true
Live those concepts every day
And let judgement ensue

The King of Letting Go

5 Oct

The King of Letting Go

I am a humble servant of
The King of Letting Go
Every day I try to let
My Monarch’s teachings flow

This King did not possess riches
His life was about loss
My King did not sit on a throne
Instead He had a cross

He wore no fancy crown of gold
Adorned with studded jewels
Instead there was a crown of thorns
Placed on His head by fools

He walked away from His home town
From those who had raised Him
To cast His light in places that
Had grown shady and dim

He let go of the things He had
The things He did possess
He knew the key to happiness
Was knowing you need less

And when the only thing left was
His life, they took that too
He let it go as He explained
“They know not what they do”

I wonder why it’s so hard for
People to let it go
Everyday annoyances
That make our anger grow

But one thing we can’t seem to grasp
And hold on tightly to
Is the lesson this King taught
We just cannot construe

The thought that peace is in our grasp
If we let go, move on
Accept the things we cannot change
Accept what’s gone is gone

I am a humble servant of
The King of Letting Go
I will not be dragged down because
I will no longer tow

I will sever the lines that hold me
To anchoring weight
I will let go of my ego
My selfishness, my hate

Because my King has done the same
And asks no less of me
He’s taught us only when we let
It go can we be free

Uncorrupted Prayer

Uncorrupted Prayer

Dear Lord in Heaven, it’s me again
I’ve had a thought today
I know there’s many starving so
I thought I’d try to pray

For one kid in particular
That I don’t even know
I’ve never even seen a picture
Of this kid, although

I know they have it much harder
Than I have ever had
So any grace you meant for me
Please shine it on this lad

Amen
