Light Makes Right

4 Jun

Light Makes Right

Headlines popped up as I tried
To go about my day
Someone did a bad thing so
The world is in dismay

The fervor and the passion was
Intense to say the least
Unfortunately most people aren’t
Acquainted with that beast

Intensity: the power that’s
A monster or a saint
Depending on which spectrum of
The light which you acquaint

There’s people who are angry and
They’re breaking things with rage
And then there are the quiet ones
Who act with much more sage

They’ve paid attention to headlines
From not just their lifetime
But all the way through history
Back to the premiere crime

Of brother killing brother over
Really bad advice
Or jealousy? Or spite? Who knows?
But what’s for sure: the price

When one acts out of rage there is
A price that will be paid
Even if the destruction
Is for a pure crusade

The ones who take a deep breath and
Who dwell within the light
The ones who think instead of blurt
Who plan instead of fight

Are warriors who understand
The power in their hand
And use it each time to take an
Illuminated stand

Busy

9 May

Busy

Sorry, I don’t have the time
To talk to you today
I’m too busy with my life
To hear what you’ve to say

I’ve got this thing to do right now
And it can’t wait a sec
But maybe if things do ease up
Can I get a raincheck?

Not sure when that will be though
This thing is so high stakes
I’m so invested and full-blast
I can’t put on the brakes

I wish I could put it on hold
And ask what’s new with you
But you have to understand
My spare moments are few

I’ve barely got the time to eat
Or make a change of clothes
Or watch the playoff game tonight
Or other favourite shows

Sorry, I wish I could help
There’s so much going on
I’m so tied up in my affairs
I’m just a bit withdrawn

With what is going on around
The world outside of me
Hopefully I’ll have time to
Open my eyes and see

That the greatest purpose in
Life is to serve others
Maybe once things calm a bit
I’ll have time for my brothers

I’ll tell you what, this thing I’ve got
Could hold on just a bit
It’s not the end of the world if
We take the time to sit

And now that I think twice about
This other thing I’ve got
It won’t take as much time as I
Thought that it would allot

And since there’s times I’m really bored
And have nothing to do
I’d feel like such a hypocrite
To have no time for you

When I stop and ponder how
The word “busy” is used
I realize I’m just asking
Myself to be excused

For only having time for me
And my selfish affairs
It’s not a word that’s ever used
By anyone who cares

So strike what I said earlier
I’m not busy at all
My stuff can wait ‘till later on
I’ve got time for your call

It’s funny how despite how busy
Every day would seem
I didn’t realize that time’s
Passing was not extreme

There’s always moments to step back
From our busy day’s work
Service is the one job that
We shouldn’t ever shirk

Seek

25 Feb

Seek

Sorry but the old saying isn’t
“Sit and ye shall find”
It takes the movement detailed in
The aforementioned grind

You won’t find what you’re looking for
Unless you choose to seek
If all you do is sit at home
You’ve got the wrong technique

‘Cause no one found a single thing
By sitting on a couch
Complaining about everything
And being just a grouch

Seeking is what brings about
The changes in  your life
Don’t be scared that it will cause you
Suffering and strife

The truth is that there really isn’t
Much to fear out there
Scared of what people will think?
The truth is they don’t care

So why should you then care about
Whatever they may say?
Let them give their two cents worth
And then be on their way

Afraid that someone will say no
To something you request?
Ask again and once again
It works, I will attest

Send a letter every week
Like Andy in Shawshawk
Show them your tenacity
And take it to the bank

That no one can deny someone
Who tries their very best
Perseverance is the key
To closing every quest

Use each opportunity
To make another one
Everything’s connected to
The place you have begun

Now get up and out the door
And seek the thing you need
“Seek and ye shall find” it says
So seek and you’ll succeed

Friend

24 Feb

Friend

A friend is a person
Who’s different than most
Truth is there’s few
Of their number to boast

A friend is someone
Who doesn’t just say
“How are you doing?”
Then goes on their way

A friend is an ally
Who sets time aside
To simply be there
For you to confide

A friend listens closely
When you have to tell
Doesn’t point fingers
Just wishes you well

A friend makes an effort
To not drift apart
To maintain the bond
There was in the start

A friend writes you back
When you reach out first
And reaches to you
When roles are reversed

A friend is proud of you
When praise is bestowed
Never once thinking
To them something’s owed

A friend is not jealous
When something goes right
And gives benefit
Of doubt in a fight

A friend will come out
Not just in fair weather
They’ll join in the storm
To ride out together

A friend will support
When they’d rather decline
Defends in a fight
With heart, fists and spine

A friend is the one
Who’ll tell you the truth
Even when it
Is extremely uncouth

A friend will pop in
For no reason at all
No barbecue needed
No party or ball

They just want to say
That you’re a true friend
So be one to them
Let your friendship extend

Patience

23 Feb

Patience

Patience isn’t something that
You can flip off and on
It can’t be gained with intellect
And can’t be forced with brawn

You can’t use complex formulas
In order to be calm
Logic doesn’t help that much
When folks aren’t in your palm

And muscle won’t change someone’s mind
When they refuse to hear
Instead of building up patience
You’re just instilling fear

So then the question begs to ask
“Just how does one keep cool?
How can I be more patient
Instead of act the fool?”

The answer comes in knowing that
Nothing is instantly
The cost is not with brains or brawn
But time that is the fee

I know that you will likely say,
“I haven’t got the time!”
Because you’re busy focused on
Your own successful climb

But that’s exactly where you’re wrong
So maybe it will aid
To think about it in this way
Of what your time is made

Time’s too big a concept for
People to comprehend
So break it down in smaller parts
To moments that append

You may not have the time to deal
With some kind of distress
But you can spare a moment to
Clean up a person’s mess

No one has the time to put up
With a person’s slip
But give a moment and you’ll see
Your patience start to grip

It may be hard to wait for someone
To get back to you
But give one moment and one more
The more that you accrue

Is directly related
To patience you amass
Benching moments just like weights
And building up your class

So next time someone does you wrong
Or tries to pass the buck
Don’t let yourself get all upset
And start to run amok

Take a moment from your stock
Of time you have to use
‘Cause that’s the price that patience costs
So have you paid your dues?

Reciprocate

22 Feb

Reciprocate

Reciprocate, 4 syllables
A word that means “give back”
“Respond,” “return,” “reply,” “repay”
But one must have the knack

Of recognizing when one does
A favor unto you
And not just ones that cost a lot
But ones that cost a few

A couple seconds of your time
A few moments of thought
Don’t let someone’s kindness be
A gesture all of naught

Amplify the good that others
Take the time to show
When someone greets you, take a sec
To tell them back “Hello”

If someone spreads their joy and smiles
Then take your scowled frown
Reflect the warmth that they’ve shown you
And turn it upside down

If a person waves to you
It wouldn’t kill you if
You waved your hand right back at them
And not be such a stiff

And don’t just think the gesture must be
Paid back right away
Favors can be put in storage
For another day

Just don’t forget to pop the lock
And pull it out for use
A friendly gesture never given
Makes you seem obtuse

Yes, it’s nice to have people
Do thoughtful things for you
But kindness is a fountain whose
Supply you must renew

You can’t just take and take from it
One day it will run dry
Contribute to its selfless flow
Or kiss that spring goodbye

With seven billion people on
This planet that we live
The universal way to show
We care is when we give

So show some gratitude whenever
Someone does you right
Reciprocating has not once
Been shown to cause you plight

Don’t just be about yourself
And all that you can gain
Don’t sit still and watch as others
Give while you abstain

Reflect their grace and soon you’ll see
That others will in kind
Nothing’s as encouraging
As selflessness combined

Test

20 Feb

Test

Tests are not just something that
You have to take in class
The judgement of your fortitude
Is something that won’t pass

There’ll never be a final test
There won’t be an exam
And best not to procrastinate
You won’t have time to cram

Everything in life is meant
To analyse your worth
The tests have been administered
Since right around your birth

Sharing toys with other kids
And playing nice at school
Welcoming the new student
When others would be cruel

Losing baseball games with grace
And shaking winners hands
Respecting what your parents say
Obeying their commands

A few years pass, but tests still come
In every shape and form
Provoke you to give in to hate
And tempt you to conform

Every parking ticket is a
Test of poise and tact
Each one passed will help you with
The next time you’re attacked

Your boss may not be the most patient
Guy or gal you know
But the more that they test you
The more you will bestow

Tolerance and understanding
Upon your temperament
Peace of mind is what you’ll have
While they stress and lament

Family isn’t always going to
Get along so well
But speaking softly works much better
Than when people yell

Every seat kicked at the theatre
Every kernel chomped
Can put your patience to the test
If tolerance is prompt

There’s a list of things that can
Annoy you day to day
But if you bomb the test it will
Only cause you dismay

Study hard by staying calm
And letting go of things
That you have no control over
And severing the strings

The more you ace the more you’ll see
The tests for what they are
The more inclined you will be to
Receive one more gold star

Grey

19 Feb

Grey

Grey hairs are a fact of life
There’s no reason to fret
With each new strand that has no hue
I never get upset

I don’t see them as representing
That I’m getting older
Instead they are a testament
That I am growing bolder

Just as weathering will score
A proven tank in battle
The silver strands that grace my temples
Show that I won’t rattle

Ashen stubble on my chin
Is no concern of mine
It just means that when trouble comes
I bear instead of whine

Greys are badges from the years
Of having persevered
With every strand of pigment lost
There’s one less thing I’ve feared

Why would someone go and use
Some dye to hide the fact
That they’ve survived and proceed to
Withstand the world’s impact?

Salt and pepper is a way
Of telling everyone
That the battle’s half way through
And so far you have won

The amount of greys that you have on
Your head directly shows
That when the going got real tough
Your warrior arose

For grey’s the color of a fighter
One who won’t back down
The prize for bearing through it all:
A granite tinted crown

I’m thankful that as years go by
My dark mane changes tone
That both my hairdo and resolve
Together tint to stone

So next time you see greys peak out
From within your fine locks
Don’t fret over losing youth
Embrace your silver fox

It’s the color of experience
Clarity and poise
Leave the red and blonde and brown
For little girls and boys

Nice

18 Feb

Nice

For today’s inspiration
Let me impart this advice
It’s nice to be important
But more important to be nice

It feels good when people say
You’re great at what you do
But don’t forget to give
Your colleague their review

I know you must be busy
But so is everyone
Most have time for work
But for gratitude, have none

They’re busy with their day
They’re busy with their plans
Too busy to reciprocate
Too busy for their fans

“There’s just so much to do!”
They always justify
And so all of their praise
Does not get a reply

Now I don’t pull my punches
So let me be quite frank
There are four varieties
Of people who don’t thank

The first type is the lazy
The kind who’ll take acclaim
But doesn’t have the energy
In them to give the same

The second type is selfish
They hoard and hoard and hoard
They’ll take the pleasantries of others
But can’t spare a reward

The third type is the ingrate
Who doesn’t even hear
The kudos given to them
That somehow don’t endear

The final type’s the asshole
The prick that smirks, “I know”
The pompous ass who thinks that they’re
Entitled to your dough

I hope to God I’ll never
Become one of these four
Lazy, selfish, ingrate, asshole
I won’t be, I swore

Not that there’s much praise
For the work that I create
Not that I desire it
And not that I await

But for the folks that take the time
To tell me they’ve enjoyed
I’ll always make an effort
To have my thanks deployed

So next time someone says
That you’ve done something great
It’s important to remember
To not take on the trait

Of one of the four types
And let those types entice
It’s nice to be important
But more important to be nice

Grouch

16 Feb

Grouch

There once was a Grouch who never smiled
Whose expression was always dismal
And regardless of the company they kept
Their outlook was always abysmal

Even if others would say, “Cheer up!
The sun will eventually shine!”
The Grouch would frown and reply, “Maybe not!”
With a pessimistic whine

“The world is what you make of it!”
The believers said with passion
But how much could the Grouch achieve
With a face that was so ashen?

What kind of difference can one make
With no fire in their eyes?
What good’s a Grouch who just critiques
But never really tries

To make the world a better place
With passion and with cheer
What do Grouches hope to gain
With their melancholy sneer?

The most important thing to keep
In mind for every day
Is that your attitude affects
The things that you will say

And attitude’s directly wired
To muscles in your face
It’s your expression that reveals
The mood that’s at your base

So it’s ironic that the Grouch
Could not make the connection
Between their negative outlook
And their own complexion

But something funny happened when
The Grouch did try to smile
Their attitude improved and their
Approach was less hostile

By curving corners of their mouth
Upward instead of down
They found out more could be achieved
With smile instead of frown

The Grouch discovered what you give
Is squarely what you get
If anger is what you put out
Then you will be upset

But if it’s joy you choose to spread
To everyone you meet
Then you’ll discover how kind in
Return the world will treat

And so the Grouch would sneer no more
And not sit back and gripe
Armed with smile as their sword
They would engage the tripe

And always beamed from face and heart
Through good times and through bad
Recognizing the effect
On others that it had

And other Grouches would befall
The power of the grin
When they saw how their mood and smile
Were indeed akin
