Test

Test

Tests are not just something that
You have to take in class
The judgement of your fortitude
Is something that won’t pass

There’ll never be a final test
There won’t be an exam
And best not to procrastinate
You won’t have time to cram

Everything in life is meant
To analyse your worth
The tests have been administered
Since right around your birth

Sharing toys with other kids
And playing nice at school
Welcoming the new student
When others would be cruel

Losing baseball games with grace
And shaking winners hands
Respecting what your parents say
Obeying their commands

A few years pass, but tests still come
In every shape and form
Provoke you to give in to hate
And tempt you to conform

Every parking ticket is a
Test of poise and tact
Each one passed will help you with
The next time you’re attacked

Your boss may not be the most patient
Guy or gal you know
But the more that they test you
The more you will bestow

Tolerance and understanding
Upon your temperament
Peace of mind is what you’ll have
While they stress and lament

Family isn’t always going to
Get along so well
But speaking softly works much better
Than when people yell

Every seat kicked at the theatre
Every kernel chomped
Can put your patience to the test
If tolerance is prompt

There’s a list of things that can
Annoy you day to day
But if you bomb the test it will
Only cause you dismay

Study hard by staying calm
And letting go of things
That you have no control over
And severing the strings

The more you ace the more you’ll see
The tests for what they are
The more inclined you will be to
Receive one more gold star

Warrior Indigestion

Warrior Indigestion

As years go by, our bodies change and how we handle food
Changes due to indigestion and we must exclude
Those things we could consume with no effort in younger days
Those same things now cause heartburn and set intestines ablaze

For Warriors, there are some foods which no longer digest
Within the fiery pit that burns intensely in our chest
Things like whining cause a gag reflex within our maw
Laying blame elicits vomit shooting from our jaw

Having no accountability gives us the runs
Laziness to do the work sprays liquid from our buns
“1st World Problem” stress does not sit right within our gut
Lack of gratitude for blessings makes us puke somewhat

Pursuit of shallow status such as money, job and cars
Does not agree with stomachs decorated with old scars
The selfie/ego/snowflake generation gives us gas
Because our diet is made up of iron, steel and brass

Fire goes down easy, problems quench our intense thirst
Pain’s a yummy snack that we could gorge on ‘till we burst
Lighting is dessert and storms are delectable meals
We’re nourished by what makes most sick: challenges and ideals

Sacrifice and work, accountability and grace
With empathy and bravery is how we stuff our face
We’ll pass on all the fear and weakness buffets that most feast
They may slake appetites of sheep, but don’t nourish a beast

Out The Window

Out The Window

I’ve seen a lot of people claim to do the work each day
But when shit hits the fan, somehow all their grace goes away
For months or years they say “I’m working on it!” but when time
Arrives to use the fruits of all their training, they don’t climb

They do not rise, they don’t stand fast, they crumble and they fall
All their so-called work goes “out the window” as they bawl
If all your training is so easily dispatched and tossed
Perhaps it’s time to admit that nothing is being lost

Perhaps it’s time to admit that the work has not been done
Concede the easy path was taken, the one that’s much more fun
Admit the truth that when you had a chance to push your bounds
You failed to crawl through danger zones and stayed on safer grounds

“Out the window” they exclaim as if they did possess
Any focus, grace or strength before their newest stress
Nothing went out any window since nothing was there
For if it was, it would stay put and help to deal and dare

Grace and focus comes with the most outrageous price tag:
Time and patience, sacrifice, ego death (what a drag!)
And what goes out the window? Just a half-assed, lazy whim
That has about as much heft as a Sunday morning hymn

Easily discarded in favor of pain and rage
“Out the window”’s never uttered by those strong and sage
Because their training’s been burned in and holds a lasting place
There to use at will in order to maintain their grace

Hero Worship

Hero Worship

Strange days these are, my friends, in which the “nerds” proudly proclaim
To worship costumed heroes without timidness or shame
“I love the Batman! Spider-Man! The Hulk and Man of Steel!”
And countless other heroes with such zest, vigor and zeal
They buy t-shirts adorned with the visage of all these greats
Some go so far as to “cosplay” but many of the traits
Like courage, selflessness and confidence, self-mastery
Sense of honor, duty, understanding, empathy
Are nowhere to be found within their elaborate suits
Empty, selfish people with fancy masks, capes and boots
I’m speaking from experience because a year ago
I started doing charity events for kids with woe
I donned a superhero costume, covered toe to head
And learned that real world superheroes are not that widespread
Many of the “cosplayers” in town did not come out
Seems when there is no reward we have a hero drought
They only go out to conventions to try to win prizes
And get their ego stroked while wearing their detailed disguises
Many will take off their mask or helmet so all see
It’s not the hero that you think, instead, “IT’S ME! IT’S ME!”
There was one who did come out to a few children’s events
He too mugged maskless for the camera and tried to make cents
On a visit to the hospital’s sick children’s wing
Instead of focusing on kids, this selfish man did sing
About the “cosplay” things he could sell me to help fight crime
Shilling wares while kids around were dying ‘fore their time
It’s so bizarre how all these heroes with muscles and abs
With steel resolve and iron will who throw punches and jabs
Whenever challenges arise don’t do much to inspire
Seems their fashion sense is what fanboys and girls admire
The t-shirts, hats and tattoos all proclaim, “I’m on their team!”
But when their feelings do get hurt, “You bullied me!” they scream
“You bullied me,” is not a phrase a true hero would speak
“You bullied me,” are words spoken by egoic and weak
“You can bully me but there’s a price you’ll have to pay”
Is what a TRUE hero would calmly, strongly, fiercely say
The sacrifice of heroes has been lost amid the suit
Unfortunate that it’s the fashion that most “nerds” salute
And fail to mimic how these heroes respond with great grace
It takes more than a costume change and mask upon your face
To genuinely feel the traits that make heroes adored
It’s gained through service, sacrifice, not applause and award

Love Thy Enemy?

30 Dec

Love Thy Enemy?

I’ve seen a couple folks who feel their spirit has been roused
Their inner Warrior’s awakened as my writes were browsed
They warn how all those before them should beware what’s to come
They threaten others because “A Warrior I have become!”
How sad and misguided to have missed the point so badly
Yes, enemies must be fought…but do not do so madly
Yes, a sneer may don your lips and teeth bared with true grit
But deep inside the heart, nothing but pure love should emit
Posturing and performance may be required to
Dissuade the ignorant normals who know not what they do
But deep inside where no one sees, there must be empathy
There must be courage to admit, “I love my enemy”
To say “I understand you even if I don’t condone”
To say “It hurts me to do this, your pain is not alone”
A Warrior is so plugged in, connected, so aware
That though sometimes they inflict pain, to do so causes wear
It is a choice that’s made with great deliberation since
To cause pain to another person causes SELF to wince
Most who have not awakened don’t suffer the effects
Right away, the “guilt” or “conscience” takes some time to flex
But truly what we should call this is “Empathy” my friends
And if you are a human being, there’s no way to cleanse
You are connected to them all, both loved ones and your foes
And you can’t start an argument or have it come to blows
And “win” because your foe incurred more hurt than you sustained
That is why after the rush, eventually you’re drained
‘Cause even the most self-absorbed, egoic person feels
Empathy for all those villains, scoundrels, tricksters, heels
Try your best to hate them, you will fail no matter what
And that’s because you’re here to LOVE, it’s programmed in your gut
So when you feel like talking tough about how they will pay
Be sure to take a moment and mention your own dismay
Perhaps if you would ponder self-destruction, you’d relent
You wouldn’t be so quick to fight a years-long argument
Let it go and wish them well, there’s no battle to “win”
Instead focus all of your strength on the great war within

Nurture Thyself

Nurture Thyself

“Do you love yourself?” the question is so often asked
“Of course!” the answer’s said with a smile that expertly masks
A body that is not nurtured, it’s slow and brain is fogged
Black tar coating lungs and grease within arteries clogged
An irritated attitude, frustrated and hostile
“Yes, I love myself!” some say despite all of the bile
That does reside within them, that love quickly turns to hate
When they don’t get their way, they grow offended and irate
And all because they’re weakened by the lack of nurturing
The failure to treat their body like it’s a Queen or King
To love thyself means to encourage your own health and strength
To stimulate, develop, foster, go to any length
To sacrifice in order to fuel love’s demanding fire
To not just say the concept but to work, to do, perspire
And when the work is done, you won’t need to answer the question
Your glowing skin with pinkish hue will serve as your expression
Your wide awake and alert eyes will provide your reply
Your focused thinking, energy, cheer and joy will reply
Love yourself? Of course you do! Who’d admit they do not?
But do you nurture yourself? That will take a bit more thought

Warriors

Warriors

The knight fastens his armor and sheaths his sword
And rides into battle against the oncoming horde
Swords and shields clash and the Warrior battles
Till the life leaves his eyes and the death bell rattles
The Brave smears war paint across his stone cheek
Against the enemy’s rifles his chances are bleak
But he draws back his bow, fires into the blue
Defends his home land till bullets rip through
The Sarge laces his boots and slaps a clip in
“You wanna live forever?” he barks with a grin
He bursts on the beach, unleashes gunfire
Fights till his last breath amid the blood and the mire
The father kisses his babies, then kisses his wife
He’s off to the factory to make a new life
He works himself ragged to pay for their food
Till his bones and his sinew have all come unglued
The daughter cancels her plans to be with her mother
Just a night out with friends, there’ll be another
She caresses her forehead with a cool and wet towel
Mother gives a warm smile through the cancer’s cold scowl
These are Warriors who give of themselves
And not for rewards to stack upon shelves
They don’t do it for riches or glory or laws
They do it for love, that’s the Warrior’s cause
