Reciprocate

Reciprocate

Reciprocate, 4 syllables
A word that means “give back”
“Respond,” “return,” “reply,” “repay”
But one must have the knack

Of recognizing when one does
A favor unto you
And not just ones that cost a lot
But ones that cost a few

A couple seconds of your time
A few moments of thought
Don’t let someone’s kindness be
A gesture all of naught

Amplify the good that others
Take the time to show
When someone greets you, take a sec
To tell them back “Hello”

If someone spreads their joy and smiles
Then take your scowled frown
Reflect the warmth that they’ve shown you
And turn it upside down

If a person waves to you
It wouldn’t kill you if
You waved your hand right back at them
And not be such a stiff

And don’t just think the gesture must be
Paid back right away
Favors can be put in storage
For another day

Just don’t forget to pop the lock
And pull it out for use
A friendly gesture never given
Makes you seem obtuse

Yes, it’s nice to have people
Do thoughtful things for you
But kindness is a fountain whose
Supply you must renew

You can’t just take and take from it
One day it will run dry
Contribute to its selfless flow
Or kiss that spring goodbye

With seven billion people on
This planet that we live
The universal way to show
We care is when we give

So show some gratitude whenever
Someone does you right
Reciprocating has not once
Been shown to cause you plight

Don’t just be about yourself
And all that you can gain
Don’t sit still and watch as others
Give while you abstain

Reflect their grace and soon you’ll see
That others will in kind
Nothing’s as encouraging
As selflessness combined

“One of the main causes of burnout is a loss of reciprocity in social interactions. In other words, we have to give much more than we get back.” ~ Peter Richter

Madness vs Wisdom

Madness vs Wisdom

At the dawn of time, two forces
Came into existence
One was Wisdom, made of peace
And Madness, from resistance

The force of Wisdom saw things as
The way they really were
Madness, on the other hand
Saw what it did prefer

And when it turned out things were not
Precisely as it wanted
Madness lost control and felt
Frustrated, angry, haunted

It couldn’t let it go because
It thought that it knew best
Wisdom on the other hand
Did never feel as stressed

It took its peace of mind in knowing
That things cannot be
Exactly as the vision in
Your mind that you may see

Instead it opened itself up
To different paths and ways
Seeing obstacles as more
Than annoying delays

Wisdom recognized that those
Are opportunities
To learn, to train, to grow, not just
Struggles meant to displease

Eventually there came a day
When Wisdom and Madness
Crossed each other’s paths and blocked
Each other’s own progress

Madness used it’s anger and
It’s hateful, spiteful talk
It circled and it attacked and
It pushed and pulled and stalked

Wisdom fought with all its strength
But not by the same means
Instead it relied on its training
And all its routines

It let Madness do all it did
And did not expect more
It stood firm with its peace of mind
And waged a peaceful war

And what Madness soon learned was that
It could not maintain hate
For an indefinite time
It was far too much weight

It grew tired and silent in
The face of Wisdom’s peace
The hateful words and violent acts
Eventually did cease

And as Madness sat and recouped
Wisdom simply walked on
Walking into horizon
Until all trace was gone

It didn’t gloat of victory
It let it go instead
Just as it did with the acts
That had intended dread

Madness would recover and
Many foes would it thwart
But against one enemy
It always came up short

Madness vs Wisdom was
Always the same outcome
Because Wisdom was not entrenched
It never could succumb

It flowed and bent and let go of
Whatever came its way
And when the two collide, it’s still
The same result today

Angel Hair

Angel Hair

There is a charity up north
Called Angel Hair for Kids
They provide underprivileged tykes
With no hair with new lids

Little boys and girls who’ve lost
Their locks because of cancer
For those who can’t afford a wig
Angel Hair is the answer

When I heard about this cause
I knew there was no choice
I’m donating a foot of hair
And using my deep voice

To spread the word about their cause
To folks around the land
TV, radio and web
And try to lend a hand

But when I chop my ponytail
Is solely up to you
The audience now reading this
Should step up and help too

My goal is to raise two thousand
Dollars for a great cause
The Canadian Cancer Society
And that’s because

They are an organization
That helps all those who fight
The horrible disease that has
Drained so many of might

They bring hope to those who continue
To never give in
And honor the memory of those
Who fought but didn’t win

It’s a busy world and there’s
Not much time to reflect
Many people don’t care until
Cancer does affect

Themselves or one of their loved ones
Until it’s close to home
This message isn’t for those folks
It’s for those with a comb

Who brush their hair every morning
And do not think about
The little kids who’ve lost their own
Because it’s fallen out

This message is for people who
Have not lost mom or dad
To breast or prostate cancer yet
For folks who aren’t yet sad

So if you think that this cause sounds
Like a very good mission
Do not wait ‘till later to
Contribute your addition

That you will offer your help to
All those who’ll never quit
