Be Selfless

15 Feb

Be Selfless

I know it’s hard to just forgive
To say “Oh well, live and let live”
To do the right thing, let go and move on

I know the hurt they did to you
Feels like it cut and stabbed right through
To your heart and now you feel so withdrawn

And even though you know what’s right
You feel you just don’t have the might
To free that heavy burden from your soul

My word of advice isn’t to
Be nice or polite to those who
Steal joy and on your peace exact great toll

My only request: Be selfless
Don’t think of self and all your stress
‘Cause stress occurs just if ego resides

Hurt feelings and torment are
The evidence ego’s not far
It’s in that constant hurt that ego hides

Be selfless, think not of your pain
And more you’re selfless, more you train
The more you do not take things personal

The more you’ll see the deception
That ego has on perception
And soon from your eyes you will pull that wool

There is no way to rectify
The wrong things done that make you cry
And angry, hurt, frustrated and so sad

There’s no redemption for some deeds
And their ego rarely concedes
So be selfless or it will drive you mad

Be selfless and don’t keep score
Stop saying how they made you sore
Be selfless ‘cause it’s selfishness that makes

All the hurt and all the scorn
So be selfless and sound the horn
And witness how within spirit awakes

You Are Not A Warrior

27 May

“Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn’t even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back.” ~Heraclitus

You Are Not A Warrior

With seven thousand people on
This little page I’ve made
There is one thought that on my mind
Has occasionally weighed

The words of Heraclitus speak
Of how there are so few
Warriors while there are many
Targets just shot through

If you are on this page that claims
To be created by
A Warrior and is meant for
Those who wish to apply

The same virtues, then you must ask
Yourself which one are you:
Just another target or
One of the very few?

A Warrior does not wake up
And dread the day ahead
A Warrior does not wish he
Or she could stay in bed

A Warrior is strong enough
To be gentle but firm
A Warrior does not apologize
And does not squirm

You are not a Warrior
If you have no control
Over how much you do drink
Or food that’s in the bowl

You are not a Warrior
If people cause you stress
If you allow what others do
To influence, depress

You are not a Warrior
If you worry too much
You’ll never find a Warrior
Trapped inside of fear’s clutch

You are not a Warrior
If you are weak and scared
You are not a Warrior
If you have never dared

You are not a Warrior
If you’re concerned about
What others may think and let
Them fill your head with doubt

You are not a Warrior
If something offends you
Accusations and complaints
Only make ego stew

You are not a Warrior
If you wish it were easy
Or if you are a man and treat
Women dirty and sleazy

You are not a Warrior
If you have read this piece
And feel pissed off and press “Unlike”
And make the count decrease

You are just a target that’s
Been hit, bullseye, once more
As they say, “On your way out
Don’t let your ass hit door”

‘Cause I don’t have the time to waste
On people who can’t see
That every single person has
The potential to be

A Warrior but few step up
And make the sacrifice
So if you are a target then
You don’t need my advice

Ribbons of Angst

26 Jan

“When you feel fear, use the sword.  Take it up here and cut the mind to ribbons.  Slash through all those regrets and fears, anything else that lives in the past and the future.” ~Socrates, “Way of the Peaceful Warrior”

Ribbons of Angst

You’ll rarely find a rhyme of mine
In which I fret, bemoan and whine
In fact there may not be a single
Angst and torment laden jingle

True, there are some diatribes
Which contain a few sterner vibes
But not once have I written where
Just misery I did declare

There always is a message of
Empowerment, support and love
So since I’m human and still feel
The same frustrations, what’s the deal?

Where are the poems in which I
Kvetch, complain, lament and cry?
I feel the same feelings as you
But with my sword I cut them through

I recognized those tormentors
Unsheathed my blade and fought those wars
To ribbons they were reduced to
And with the wind, away they blew

I do not have a single piece
Of ribbon to make forehead crease
I could not humor you at all
Of fears that tried to make me fall

And that is why I do not speak
Of moments where I’m scared and weak
My blade reduces every fear
To ribbons which then disappear

When you are suffering and hurt
And grab a pen and want to blurt
Instead, try grabbing sword instead
And face the battle in your head

Confront your torments and swing hard
And leave them severed, slashed and marred
Reduce the angst to ribbons, then
Write of your conquest with that pen

Woe is Me

20 Jan

“Do not listen to those who weep and complain, for their disease is contagious.” ~Og Mandino

Woe is Me

Allow me to use my soap box
To cry about my woes
I’d like to writhe in misery
And focus on my lows

I will express ingratitude
By focusing on times
That hurt, frustrated, caused me stress
The awful unjust crimes

Instead of thinking all about
The good things in my life
A father, mother, brothers, sisters
Nieces, nephew, wife

Employment when so many can’t
Get hired anywhere
Ability to walk when some
Are confined to wheelchair

Woe is me! Forget all that!
This is about my hurt!
Because I didn’t get the things
For which I did exert!

My fears about the things I’ll lose
My angst for selfish wants
My nightmares that I can’t let go
Of old forgotten haunts

I take the time to create this
And hope it will be read
Because I need someone to say
“Please feel better instead!”

And I will still not figure out
It won’t do any good
Until I stop my complaining
And do the thing I should

Because a write of angst does not
Inspire or empower
It helps not author or reader
To light their darkest hour

Perhaps some day I will attain
This universal fact:
That woe is NOT me, I am not
Damaged, broken or cracked

I have a well of strength within
Of love and grace and peace
But when I cry about myself
All of these virtues cease

Anyways, back to my tears
And bitter agony
My torture, torment, misery
My me and me and me

Let me know how much you care
By saying “It’s alright!”
“Hope that you feel better soon!”
And “Have a pleasant night!”

We’ll keep it up ‘till one of us
Sees that it goes nowhere
And recognizes there’s no point
To writings of despair

(In case you cannot detect my
Sarcasm in this write
I am not really suffering
From anguish or from plight

I am a warrior which means
When going does get tough
I do not cry, instead I say
“I haven’t had enough!

One more just like that and then
Another if you please!”
Think of this woeful poem
As just a little tease)

YOU Are The Problem

25 Oct

YOU Are The Problem

This message goes to anyone
Who struggles with a vice
And thinks that outside factors are
At fault, YOU should think twice

Do not blame your shortcomings
On anything but YOU
It’s time YOU took a moment from
Complaining to review

That YOU’re the one who isn’t trying
Hard enough to make
Your situation any better
And deal with your ache

YOU’re the one who lets others
Get all under your skin
That hands over the power to
Others who deal chagrin

YOU’re the one who isn’t trying
Hard enough to break
Bad habits, to realize
Giving in’s a mistake

YOU can’t blame the weather or
Blame the economy
It doesn’t take a microscope
To be able to see

That most things wrong in your life are
Because of YOU and how
YOU sit and play passenger
And constantly allow

Stressing factors to control
Your mood, your joy, your fear
Take a look in the mirror
And the real problem’s clear:

A person who can take control
But chooses to sit back
And hopes that things will get better
And prays to God for slack

The problem won’t be solved until
The person in the mirror
Leans a little closer and
Sees themselves a bit clearer

Sees the dormant warrior
That’s sleeping deep inside
Realize the Creator
Already did provide

Everything that YOU need to
Conquer all of your fears
All of your frustrations and
Explore all new frontiers

Awake that fighting spirit deep
Inside YOU and YOU’ll see
The warrior within YOU will
Proceed to set YOU free

Of all of your temptations and
Your shortcomings, your flaws
YOU’ll find that where before YOU ran
Your warrior now draws

Strength from situations that
Would usually just drain
Everything’s a challenge to be
Conquered, even pain

Let the spirit of your warrior
Awake and solve
The root of the problem and all
Your vices will dissolve

Patience

23 Aug

Patience

Impatience comes from thinking that
There’s just not enough time
To finish all the tasks you’ve got
To complete your steep climb

I notice people agitated
When they have to wait
As seconds tick, they roll their eyes
And let patience deflate

They don’t want to wait anymore
They want it right away
They’ll never learn it’s not that fast
They just stand with dismay

Frustrated and stressed out ‘cause
Things are not going smooth
Never realizing that
It’s patience that will soothe

Patience is the one thing that
Will ward off all the stress
Patience is what you should use
When something slows progress

Frustration comes from expecting
Something that can’t be done
If you just take a moment
To breathe and slow your run

If you just accept that this
Person you’re dealing with
Can’t get it done by the first
But maybe by the fifth

If you realize you’re not
As busy as you seem
If you recognize that “busy”
Is a common theme

That it is the reason why
You often get so irked
You’d realize that you’re in fact
Not really overworked

You think, “This needs to get done by
The deadline or I’m dead!”
But you don’t see the cause of your
Frustration’s in your head

What can’t be done just can’t be done
It’s as simple as that
Stressing, screaming, threatening
And acting like a brat

Isn’t going to change the fact
That this deadline’s no use
No need to feel misery
And no need for excuse

“Not going to happen” is
All that you need to say
Accept the situation and
Let patience come your way

Get out of the habit of
Trying to meet deadlines
A warrior is not constrained
By a date that confines

Instead a warrior follows
Guidelines of what to do
A simple plan that’s flexible
In case things go askew

And a warrior does not
Expect immediate
Patience is the trait that will
Cause their stress to remit
