Motivation

The normals ask the fitness guru, “Please sir, kick my ass!”
Because they lack an iron will and ‘tween their legs, no brass
The normals ask the scholar, “Please sir, share what you have learned!”
Because reading is something for which they have never yearned
The normals ask the Warrior, “Please sir, help me wage war
With all the things that stress me out or make my life a chore!”
The normals ask the people who have done the work each day
For motivation ‘cause they don’t live in an intense way
They ask permission, say sorry and tiptoe on eggshells
“Is this ok? Is that alright?” the normal often tells
“Can I do this? Can I do that?” the normal always checks
They ask the masters such as Jesus, Gandhi, Malcolm X
They ask permission to show greatness, “Think that’d be alright?”
For motivation, “Lend a hand for my enormous fight?”
Motivation is admission that you are weak willed
Hoping someone else’s passion in you is instilled
No one’s going to give you what you’re asking for so cease
They did the work and paid the price and earned all of their peace
They had audacity to have unshakable belief
In themselves through all the criticism, hate and grief
Everyone who’s earned greatness that is asked to inspire
Achieved it not through urging but because they did perspire
Not through motivation but through DEFIANCE and DARE
Through CONFIDENCE and COURAGE, not through asking and through prayer
If you ask for motivation, he’s all that I’ve got:
“Those who do not motivate themselves live lives for naught”

Too Little, Too Late
 
Some folks choose to live their lives as though there’s no tomorrow
But not as in the sense that they live without fear or sorrow
They live without awareness of comeuppance, consequence
All they live for is cheap thrills, the price: their common sense
 
Drugs or booze or trash that masquerades as food these days
They slowly kill their body in a grease and sugar haze
They indulge laziness and play their games and watch TV
And hide behind their feelings, “Nobody better shame me!”
 
Society now says it’s wrong to speak against weak will
“Smoke and drink and eat all that you want and pop a pill!’
Do nothing and be nothing, destroy yourself for years
And any words of warning to the like falls on deaf ears
 
But guess what happens when a human body is attacked
For years with garbage shoved and stuffed through its digestive tract?
The body finally says what the owner found so tough:
“ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH!”
 
It is a concept quite foreign to most, the idea that
Despite your continued cravings for drugs and booze and fat
Despite the fact that you still want, your body says, “No more!”
Despite your cravings, your body no longer will ignore
 
Heart problems and cancer, seizures, organ failure too
These drastic repercussions give weak wills a different view
They finally awake and learn the price of all their thirst
And hunger so they swear to change…now that they’ve been coerced
 
Too little and too late for many of those who do swear
To take care of themselves now that they’ve had their little scare
But sad truth is an iron will is not forged within fear
And most of these assurances are not all that sincere
 
I’ve seen it time and time again, the pattern just repeats
Self-destruction, promises, then corpses white as sheets
That “wake-up call” for many is actually a death-knell
Too little and too late and no will power now will quell
 
Years of lack of awareness, and once again, “Don’t shame!”
It’s just “bad luck” that they will die, right? They can’t take the blame!
The time has come to say “Enough” to self-indulgent thicks
Who squander their own health each day in order to get kicks
 
Life’s not fair and you don’t always get back what you gave
But one thing that’s for sure is if you crave and crave and crave
And pour and shovel anything down your throat to feel good
Instead of moderation and eating health foods you should
 
Your body will revolt and no promise or bargain will
Undo the damage that obliviousness does instill
No pleading with the God above, nor doctors up the street
Undoing years of ignorance: an impossible feat
 
Repairing damage from cravings: a futile waste of time
Moving after years of lethargy: too steep a climb
A short and painful death that’s filled with wishing for reprieve
Followed by years of sorrow by your loved ones who grieve
 
My words are meant to be as sharp as the sword that I wield
But they are not written in hopes that the sick will be healed
I’ve given up on those weak wills, they’ve made their beds to lay
My words are meant for those who care for their bodies each day
 
Do not quit, do not give up, don’t grow tired and stray
Don’t follow the drunk, drugged and obese crowd, do not betray
Yourself, keep fighting, keep caring, keep paying that high rent
On your body with exercise, nutrition, don’t relent
 
It may not guarantee more years but quality will rise
More energy, intensity, more passion, clearer eyes
Do not be a “too little, too late” person like most
The world does not need another repentant, rueful ghost

Jesus Wasn’t Fat

“Fat,” a word that hurts feelings of those with no control
It feels like an attack when said by some skinny bean pole
Even worse when spoken by someone with muscled frame
A word that causes much self-doubt, embarrassment and shame

When heavy folks hear “fat,” most don’t look closer at the speaker
And see the stretch marks that reveal at one time, they were weaker
The ego stings and covers ears and doesn’t want to hear
Life advice from those who sweat the fat off of their rear

I was fat when I was young and never do I hide
The reason why my girth was large, my frankness exceeds pride
I was obese because I lacked control over myself
Overweight because I was oblivious to health

Asleep and unaware to the effects that poor health brings
The lack of energy and focus all ‘cause ego stings
I got over myself and focused on those who were svelte
Warriors who took the punishment that life had dealt

Lean and mean with hard muscle, wiry and flexible
Quick as cats and sly as foxes, intense as a bull
Many men and women that I did admire had
A sharp and focused mind because their brain matter was clad

In toned muscle and working in harmony with the soul
Apostle Paul said how fitness is a spiritual goal:
“Your body is a temple,” from book of Corinthians
Incredible how followers of Christ speak against sins

Like tattoos, piercings, drugs and homosexuality
Yet spilling out over their belt is their hefty decree
That their body is not a temple, just an endless pit
They eat and eat and eat but do not sweat and show true grit

One of the Warriors I studied to inspire me
Was son of God himself, Jesus, the lamb who died for thee
Though we have no photographs or selfies of the Savior
An image can be formed through His teachings and His behavior

And many artists have rendered an idea of His form:
Lean and slender, fit and steady, ready for the storm
No double chin or big belly, the King of Kings was trim
His physical condition wasn’t because of the gym

Jesus walked and walked and walked and walked and walked and walked
And walked and walked and walked and walked and then sometimes He talked
He didn’t sit in chairs all day, He used his legs to move
He knew HE was a temple that would every day improve

With self-control of His diet as well as exercise
He knew that clarity was in proportion to waist size
Somewhere down the road it did become rude, coarse and crude
To tell people they are too fat and need to eat less food

How did being overweight become acceptable
For those who follow one who stopped eating ‘fore He felt full?
How did it become distasteful to say, “Lose some weight”?
How did giving wise advice get skewed as spewing hate?

How did the excuses get accepted with no thought?
“I’ve got an injury, my back hurts and my knees are shot!”
“I’ve got a thyroid issue, I can’t help that I am fat!”
I have more reasons than most do so their stories fall flat

If I can remain thin and trim for over twenty years
Then I’m convinced you can as well if you’d just dry those tears
If you would stop feeling so hurt and instead, focus on
Moving what still works on you, you’d start to grow your brawn

If you would say, “No!” to yourself when those cravings arise
Be ADAMANT and STUBBORN then, like me, you would surmise
That being overweight is choice, it’s more calories swallowed
Than used, it’s inefficiency, a way of life not followed

It’s hoarding more than is needed, it’s lack of awareness
It’s being honest with yourself, not kind but full fairness
Many cannot handle all the truths behind the flab
It makes them sad so they reach for their food to soothe the stab

But truth is something that my King has taught me to not fear
The truth is something I embraced and to which still adhere
My inspiration was not fat and did inspire me
To treat my body as a temple which set my mind free

Despite the pain that courses through my body every day
I choose to move what still works well and that is why I weigh
The same each time I step upon the scale regardless of
What year it is, my temple is something I show much love

By getting blood to flow and by throwing sugar in trash
By eating fruits and vegetables and not wasting my cash
On candy, deep fried dreck and other junk that tastes so “yummy”
That adds nothing to your life other than a flabby tummy

Feelings hurt? That’s no surprise, the lard causes thin skin
But one in one hundred will choose to take it on the chin
They’ll hear the truth and do the work to own and renovate
Their temple and they’ll owe it to wisdom instead of hate

“All or nothing” is a way
Of thinking that will lead
To nothing more than standing still
If you have just one speed

As years go by the damage will
Take toll on a few parts
But when a limb is lost, that’s when
The intensity starts

And heightened training  on surviving
Limbs must then be done
If something is wrong with your arm
Your task is then to run

If knees are shot or ankles ache
Then get yourself a bench
Realize your arms still work
And can be used to clench

And lift and throw around dead weight
And get your life blood flowing
If atrophy attacks one part
Then others must be growing

Compensate, don’t sit and cry
About what doesn’t work
Don’t focus on injury
‘Cause healthy parts you’ll shirk

Warriors will find a way
To push themselves as far
Physically as they can go
No matter what does mar

They’ll run or walk with neck and back
And shoulder injuries
They’ll exercise their abs and chest
Despite their blown-out knees

They are aware of what remains
And let go of what’s gone
So that the healthy parts increase
In endurance and brawn

Champion Warrior

My good friend Fitz “The Whip” Vanderpool just won the Canadian Middleweight Title in his mid 40’s despite most people telling him he was too old. Once again, the Whip proves that “With Hope, It’s Possible!”

They told him “It’s too late, old man”
“You’re much too old to fight”
But Fitz “The Whip” knew that to be
Judged by age isn’t right

Those who judged were short sighted
And didn’t see the training
The heart, desire, sacrifice
The passion still remaining

The board, the public, so many
Gave doubt and disbelief
They tried to steal his Hope and tried
To fill his heart with grief

But Champions are not affected
By another’s words
Champions are not sheep that
Walk along with the herds

Champions look within and
They listen to themselves
A Champion sees strength inside
And bravely, deeper delves

A Champion does not hear what
The pessimists do warn
A Champion blocks it all out
‘Cause Champions were born

To jab, to hook, to uppercut
To fight ‘till final round
To take all that life has to give
And pound and pound and pound

And rip respect from clutches of
Those who don’t try their best
To take it by force from all those
Who much prefer to rest

Congratulations, Champion
You have proven once more
That with Hope it is possible
Now no one can ignore

Warrior Weight Loss Wisdom

Many people struggle with
The battle to lose weight
The problem is that they look for
Shortcuts to find their fate

I’m speaking from experience
When I speak of weight loss
Let me take a moment and
My weight history gloss

I was obese when I was young
Because I ate too much
And because I didn’t move
With running, sports and such

They laughed and poked their fun and called me
“Fatty” and a pig
I lost the weight because their insults
Did so deeply dig

I lost it through shortcuts like eating
Hardly any food
And shakes and pills because I was
Concerned how I was viewed

Surprise surprise, the weight came back
Because I hadn’t learned
Anything of discipline
And how weight loss is earned

Again I felt inadequate
Again I sought shortcuts
Diet pills instead of work
Starving instead of guts

Again the weight came off and then
Again it came right back
Again I felt that I was under
Their constant attack

But something finally came to me
The true reason to lose
All the weight I carried which
Had caused so many blues

When I chose to trim my waist
Not for another’s praise
But for my own accomplishment
That ended my fat days

I took the motto “try harder”
And didn’t look for ease
I finally accepted that
Weight loss was not a breeze

I disciplined myself with food
That didn’t taste that great
Compared to all the fried delights
That had packed on the weight

I exercised and learned about
What my true limits were
I stopped letting discomfort and
A little pain deter

The weight came off but I did not
Feel any swell of pride
I didn’t gaze in mirrors, my
New body wasn’t eyed

It was a by-product of something
Greater that I gained
An understanding of the power
Of being self-trained

No routines or regiments
No classes did I take
I didn’t have a trainer for
My convenience’s sake

I listened to my body and
Used it all that I could
And slashed my mind to ribbons when
It said “This is not good!”

“This is uncomfortable, this is
Too hard, this is not fun!
You’ be much happier if you
Ate junk and weighed a tonne!”

The weight stayed off because I have
The one thing that you need
In order for your weight loss to
Permanently succeed:

Discipline, the rigor of
Training, experience
Ability to make right choices
‘Cause you are intense

You cannot get it in a pill
Or shake or diet plan
The strength is already in you
So simplify your scan

Stop searching for methods to
Reduce your extra pounds
Cut out sugar and fried food
And push physical bounds

Go out for a jog, don’t fret
When you are out of breath
You’re falling to the level of
Your training, not your death

In time you will build discipline
And strength, conditioning
You’ll learn to stand up on your own
And to shortcuts not cling

And when you reach your goal you’ll see
The body that you’ve earned
Isn’t something that you’ll flaunt
For their heads to be turned

It’s something more, a symbol of
Your potential achieved
When you forsake the shortcuts and
In yourself have believed
