Everybody Else

24 Apr

A common response I hear from people is “Everyone else is doing it” or words to that affect, as if the fact that other people being dishonest, lazy, selfish, aloof or inconsiderate legitimizes their behavior.

For people who defend themselves by saying “others are doing it” or “others aren’t going the extra mile so why should I?” I would encourage those people to take a long, hard, close look at the examples they’re using as their defense. Are those people who are doing it too exceptional? Are they impeccable? Are they driven? Are they selfless? Do they think for themselves and blaze their own trail, or are they just a sheep following the herd, and by their actions, influencing others to follow as well?

When someone says “Well that other person is doing it,” I believe a Warrior responds by saying, “Who is that other person? Describe them to me. Tell them how passionate they are. Tell me how fearless they are. Describe to me their limits and how close they push themselves to reaching and even surpassing those limits.”

People should be more picky about who they pattern themselves after. Proximity alone is not a good enough reason to emulate another person, so take a step back, get some distance, and take a wider view of “who else is doing it.”

God’s Hands

15 Mar

“The buck stops here.” ~President Harry S. Truman

God’s Hands

I hear a lot of people say
“I’ll leave it in God’s hands”
They pass the buck and hope that He
Deals with our life’s demands

Another trouble comes around
And off it goes to God
Another package sent right up
That’s screwed up, broken, flawed

“What is this? Some turmoil?
God’s hands still have some room
He has plenty of space for all
My misery and doom”

The Warrior’s relationship
With He who did create
Is one that is a bit different
Than sending just their hate

The Warrior is well aware
That there’s a higher power
But they will never pass the buck
Wash hands of it and cower

The Warrior is filled with strength
Because they know their source
They’re forged from something paramount
An immovable force

They are derived from One who can’t
Be controlled or destroyed
And being a supreme power
It never does avoid

Troubles, hardships, struggles, tests
Annoyances and stress
This Creator does not hand off
Instead it does address

And so the Warrior’s inspired
To face those same demands
Bravely by themselves and not
Pass it to their God’s hands

They feel assured to know that their
Creator watches on
But they can handle it themselves
With their own grace and brawn

Never will you hear a Warrior
Pass any buck
“Give me that!” they say and snatch
Grasp, grapple, grip or pluck

Whatever is the task at hand
And clasp it firmly tight
The Warrior knows each conquest
Bring them to a new height

“Don’t worry, I’ve got this one”
The Warrior tells God
You’ve done enough for me, and for
That I greatly applaud

But now it’s time for me to stand
To rise up and to deal
It’s easier to kick ass if
I stand rather than kneel”

No Apologies

5 Feb

“It is a good rule in life never to apologize.  The right sort of people do not want apologies, and the wrong sort take a mean advantage of them.”  ~P.G. Wodehouse, The Man Upstairs

No Apologies

Sorry is a word that we
Should try our best to lose
It’s a concept Warriors
Should rarely ever use

We say it with no thought of how
The word’s truly defined
So let me take a moment to
Look it up and remind:

Regrettable, deplorable
Sorrowful, grieved or sad
Wretched, poor and pitiful
Without use to be had

Warriors are never sorry
For a single thing
They understand the consequences
Of the words they fling

They put thought into what they say
And also what they do
And when some feelings get hurt they
Still hold fast and stay true

To what they do believe in
Even if feathers are ruffled
They don’t make up excuses and
Let their voices be muffled

The goal is to be confident
In all you do and say
All “I’m sorry” serves to do
Is shows that you will stray

“I’m sorry” is a “too late” phrase
It doesn’t change the past
Resolve to make the next time that
You say it be your last

Resolve to not do anything
That you will soon regret
Do nothing deplorable
That will leave you in debt

Save yourself from the sorrow
From being sad and grieved
If you said or did something
It’s because you believed

Be not wretched, pitiful
You’re much better than that
Differing opinions don’t
Have to end in combat

Agree to disagree and let
Each side have their own views
Never let another’s ego
Make you sing the blues

By saying that you’re sorry and
Indulging “sensitives”
Tip-toeing on eggshells is
Not how a Warrior lives

Replace “sorry” with “deal with it”
Or a similar phrase
Like “get over yourself” and watch
All of the eyebrows raise

Because it’s in that moment where
The ego shows its face
Showing no regret is how
We put it in its place
