Same Old Same Old

1 Dec

Yawn

Same Old Same Old

“Lately” I hear people say
“There aren’t many who go
The extra mile, try harder
Who want to learn and grow”

It’s the word “lately” that makes me
Laugh a Warrior’s laugh
There’s nothing recent about the
Urge to only give “half”

It’s not just in the past ten years
That people have tried less
It has been thousands of years that
They’ve chosen to regress

For those who’ve only recently
Noticed the downward spiral
Welcome to being awake
To selfishness gone viral

There are those who are new to this
And they will act so shocked
“I can’t believe! I can’t believe!”
They’ve talked and talked and talked

But Warriors know very well
On which world they do dwell
They aren’t surprised when ugliness
Sprouts from this same old hell

They aren’t surprised, they don’t act shocked
They aren’t appalled or mad
They don’t treat laziness or selfishness
As a new fad

It is as old as the hills, mountains
Rivers, lakes and seas
The selfish quest for comfort, luxury
Enjoyment, ease

The Warrior accepts what is
The same old same old same
And they do not cry out in anger
Or try to lay blame

What it is is what it is
And all that one can do
Is disagree with how things are
And not let it change you

Not let other’s laziness
Stop you from choosing to
Walk an extra mile when
Another beckons you

Not let other’s fear distract
From what needs to be done
Not let other’s threats dissuade
And make you turn and run

Same old selfish, thoughtless world
With many who are dense
Who are oblivious, ungrateful
And take great offense

Nothing new about it, folks
It’s been that way forever
And since the dawn of time, there’s been
Warriors who would never

Let such fearful, selfish, shabby
People influence
Their attitude, their emotions
Their mood or common sense

You Know

16 Jul

You Know

“Tell me how to do it”
There are so many who ask
When they want help to overcome
Some scary, fearful task

To the people who have conquered
Lots of their own fears
The answers these trailblazers give
Is “blood and sweat and tears”

The question “How?” is asked because
The asker hopes to hear
An answer that will be easy
And quick and bring them cheer

They hope to hear a shortcut that
Has been eluding them
They’re hoping to discover that
Elusive hidden gem

That will deliver them from pain
From suffering and hurt
But deep down we all know those things
We simply can’t avert

You know all that you need to do
Stop hoping for a break
You know that it’s uncomfortble
And may cause you some ache

You know that it won’t be much fun
While you are doing it
You know that you cannot half-ass
And that it takes true grit

And biggest fact of all that many
Never seem to grasp:
You know that by the end after
You grunt and shake and gasp

That the toll that it takes does not
Last forever on you
It is replaced by something else
Because you gutted through

And that is courage, grace, resolve
And so much confidence
You know all that you need to do
So use your common sense

And stop asking all of the fighters
And warriors in hopes
That they will have a shortcut or
An easy way that copes

“THROUGH THE WALL!” they all will say
“NOT OVER OR AROUND!”
You know so stop asking and simply
Pound and pound and pound

Soft Times

19 Jan

“Most of the luxuries and many of the so-called comforts of life, are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind.” ~Henry David Thoreau

Soft Times

This ain’t the age of warriors
Of that there’s little doubt
The world in which we live in is
One where the soft have clout

It is the age of convenience
Where everything’s “right now”
Everything is “instantly”
With no time to allow

Everything at fingertips
And no patience required
Is it any wonder why
There are so few inspired?

Everything is effortless
But they can’t figure out
Even with this convenience
How to make folks not pout

They constantly complain and whine
About how life is hard
Very few do see that life
Today’s as soft as lard

Bad choices are everywhere
Junk food on every street
Liquor, drugs and luxury
The body does mistreat

The warrior’s a different breed
They’re not afraid to turn
Their backs on all these soft pleasures
Because for more they yearn

Patience, strength and grace which comes
From saying “Not for me”
They aren’t afraid to put chests out
And say “I disagree”

They do not eat when not hungry
For sake of socializing
They do not have another drink
And thereby compromising

Their set of values and virtues
They are not out to please
And all the luxuries in life
To them will not appease

Because the warrior knows that
Like warriors before
All their virtues are not forged
In comfort but in war

The war on ease and laziness
On convenience and leisure
This is why when gadgets bust
The warrior won’t seizure

When other doodads and knicknacks
Go on the fritz and break
The warrior has patience and
Does not become a flake

They do not get frustrated ‘cause
That is a soft reaction
The warrior’s as hard as stone
And suffers no distraction

Because they see the soft times that
Surround them and they say:
“Keep your fancy instant toys
Which frustrate and dismay

We are descendants of the ones
Who needed nothing more
Than what’s already inside us:
Our solid, sturdy core”

Comfortable Warriors

1 Jan

“If you don’t step out of your comfort zone and face your fears, the number of situations that make you uncomfortable will keep growing.” ~Theo Pistorius

Comfortable Warriors

Many words describe the ones
Who go by “warrior”
Peace and strength and grace and love
And selflessness infer

So do intensity and
Resolve, patience, courage
Balance, focus, fortitude
All these traits encourage

Notice nowhere is “comfort”
Listed in these virtues
Many “warriors” fall short
If there’s a threat of bruise

Or scrape or bleeding, broken bones
Or excess of much sweat
Or discomfort not physical
Like topics that upset

Uncomfortable issues like
Sickness, hardship or rape
The “Comfortable Warrior” makes
An impatient escape

The true warrior knows there isn’t
Comfort down the road
They understand that true peace comes
When comfort does erode

When one no longer strives just to
Make their lives more relieved
The warrior views comfort seekers
As ones to be grieved

Sad and selfish cowards who
Resemble pigs in muck
Wallowing in nothingness
And hoping for good luck

Striving for control so that
Their lives are convenient
Running from uncomfortable
Is how their lives are spent

Warriors say “Let it hurt!”
“I will survive the day!”
“I have no fear of awkward or
Unpleasant words they’ll say!”

“I’ve given up my search for comfort
For something much greater:
To fulfill all the potential
Instilled by my creator!”

‘Cause when He made the warriors
He said, “This won’t be pleasant
You never will grow in wisdom
When your comfort is present

But if you do accept a life
Unsheltered and devoid
Of convenience and luxury
And comfort you avoid

You will find your true strength and peace
And grace does lie within
The very same place that your comfort
Hasn’t ever been”
