What People Will Think

28 Apr
What People Will Think

You know what must be done but 4 words always hold you back:
“What will people think?” has always halted your attack
Those 4 words keep you from doing the things that must be done
To own your life and live with confidence but everyone

Casts judging eyes which make you second-guess yourself and say
“They’ll think I’m weird or crazy” if you choose a different way
But here’s the truth about what they will say if you decide
To empower yourself and choose to not blend in or hide

The cowards will think, “I wish I could be so very bold”
The narcissists will think, “There’s one less that can be controlled”
The fighters will think, “If they can then perhaps I can too”
The Warrior won’t think a thing ‘cause they’re right beside you

Do not be timid with your health, opinion or your soul
Do not allow what others think to unnerve or cajole
The weak and selfish will think poorly, the strong will be inspired
And none of it will play a part in what will be acquired

When you have done the work and earned unyielding self-respect
When you have sacrificed and sweat and kept your ego checked
When you have paid the price for iron will and steely grit
Nothing people think will ever coerce you to quit

Revelations

25 Apr

“When you look into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you.” -Friedrich Nietzsche

Revelations

It’s only blind people who let
Harsh words cause them dismay
They believe they are perceptive
But their eyes just betray

They’re told a criticism and
Their day is now “So bad!”
They’re told how they do come up short
And proceed to get mad

They lose control of inner calm
Because they don’t look close
They want to get away but these
Harsh words to me engross

Every bit of hate I’ve gotten
Negative feedback
Revealed a piece of the speaker
Their truth shed through attack

Haters who do hate themselves
And desperately lash out
People who do not have faith
And so they always doubt

Miserable, pathetic wretches
Filled with weakness, fear
Who futilely defend themselves
With words like “fag” and “queer”

Egomaniacs who think
About themselves all day
And then point fingers in attempt
To seem another way

“Ugly” by the cold hearted
And “rude” by the aloof
“Gross” by out of shape smokers
“Weird” by a boring goof

None of these assessments have
A negative effect
There is no drama since I choose
To observe and collect

Information on the speaker
To reveal *their* truth
Instead of being a victim
I choose to be a sleuth

And use these supposed “barbs” as ways
To pull the hiding veil
Off the haters and cowards
Whose attacks always fail

“To avoid criticism say nothing, do nothing, BE NOTHING.”
― Aristotle

The price you pay for having your creative voice be heard or creative vision be seen is having to hear the criticism of people who don’t have the courage or fortitude to put themselves on display for all to nitpick.

I find such “critics” to almost never employ any kind of balance in their critiques. They gleefully and snidely pick apart every so-called flaw, and yet rarely show any kind of balance by expressing passion or exuberance for what was done WELL.

Let the following phrase be your shield against any hater or critic who tries to steal your joy away: “Now say something encouraging.” I guaran-damn-tee you if you pay close attention, most of the time they won’t light up with excitement as they talk about the silver lining or saving grace of your creation.

And that, my friends, is what a true critic is; an imbalance. Everything in, nothing out (except negativity). A cowardly, hateful, selfish creature that’s only here to act as a parasite. Don’t you dare allow anybody to ever discourage you from putting something out there for fear that “they” won’t like it. Just remember: “they” don’t like anything, and nothing you can ever do will change that. I’ve posted hundreds of writings in spite of the few critics who tried to discourage me. They will never discourage me from being creative, and they should never discourage you either.

Make a great weekend,

Perfecto’s Vault

11 Jan

“A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault.”  ~John Henry Newman

Perfecto’s Vault

There once was an artist whose name
Reflected the work that he did
“Perfecto” was his name because
Imperfection is what he forbid

He worked as an artist and sculptor
Musician and filmmaker too
A writer, a poet, a dancer
Creative he was, through and through

But the problem was that young Perfecto
Just never could get things quite right
He wanted them perfect, and so
He worked on them all day and night

But Perfecto could never get works
To ever be without some flaws
“It has to be perfect to gain
The audience’s big applause!”

And so he kept tweaking and tweaking
But never could get it perfect
“It has to be just how I want it!
This artwork of me does reflect!”

And after way too much fine-tuning
Of it he eventually got sick
And so rather than unveil and let
A few of his viewers nitpick

He took it way down to his basement
And threw it into his steel vault
Along with all his other works
That had some sort of tiny fault

He slammed shut the door of the vault
And began to think of his next piece
Never once thinking it too
Would make his vault’s contents increase

Years later, when he was much older
And tried to store one more away
The vault’s door exploded wide open
And out spilled all of its cache

There he lay buried in pieces
That used to seem like they were flawed
But where once he’d been irritated
Now the old man was just awed

The years had done something to his eyes
No longer did he see the specks
All he saw was how amazing
Were all his abandoned projects

The joy and the wonder he got
Had suddenly made him admit
Perfecto had been very selfish
To think all his work was unfit

He understood there in that moment
Not everyone sees things the same
What one person thinks is imperfect
Another might loudly exclaim:

“I love it! It’s awesome! Fantastic!
I really enjoyed all your work!
Thank you for sharing it with me
And bringing to my face a smirk!”

And so Perfecto sat and cried
‘Cause all of his passion and talent
Lay on the floor of this dark basement
Because he had not been more gallant

To not care what others would think
About the work he had created
Drowning in work he now loved
That for silly reasons he had once hated

The end

“Once you accept the fact that you’re not perfect, then you develop some confidence.”  ~Rosalynn Carter

Imperfecto’s Vault

There was a guy named “Imperfecto”
Who got the job done and kept going
His vault was empty because
He wasn’t afraid of flaws showing

The end

Embarrassed

8 Aug

Embarrassed

I talked the other day about
A word that I won’t use
“Jealousy” is not the only
Word I strove to lose

“Embarrassed” is a word that isn’t
Part of my vocab
When others try to poke their fun
I just don’t feel their jab

Embarrassment is rooted in
The fear of ridicule
The fear that others will disprove
The fear you won’t be cool

And fear is something that I don’t
Allow to guide my path
My journey cannot be diverted
By a bully’s wrath

And that’s exactly what one is
Whenever they make fun
Instead of kudos and esteem
They simply choose to shun

Belittle, bad-mouth, criticize
Diminish and deride
Discredit, downplay, minimize
With attitude so snide

The irony that hit me just
A couple years ago
Was that the true cowards were those
That always seemed to crow

About how silly I would look
When I would do my thing
How absurd my interests were
Despite the joy they’d bring

It dawned on me there was no point
In trying to appease
People who had contracted
The deadly “Fear Disease”

Those who always thought twice of
The things that they enjoyed
Because embarrassment was what
They wanted to avoid

They picked the clothes most likely to
Be thought of as “in style”
They changed their interests to those that
Were least likely to rile

They were too scared to stand apart
To stand alone, unique
They’d rather be lost in the crowd
That be considered “geek”

They were afraid, and disappointed
That themselves they failed
That they let the door slam shut
By Fear and had been jailed

When I read of warriors
Who had no thought of Fear
My actions, interests and purpose
Had become very clear

No longer did Fear’s voice whisper
“What will the others think?”
Instead, my Courage screamed “Watch out!
I’m breaking out this clink!”

And it continues to bellow
Its strong and steady voice
Reassuring constantly
To help make the right choice

“Nevermind what cowards think!
The followers, the sheep!
Let them spew their ignorance
‘Cause I don’t give a *bleep*!

Let them watch from the sidelines
And snicker as I run
Towards the end zone while they stand
And get not one thing done

Laugh and mock the things I do
While they make very sure
That nothing on their end could be
Considered immature

Living to avoid the jeers
Of those who don’t deserve
Any kind of respect ‘cause
They don’t have any nerve”

Do what makes you happy and
Don’t ever be afraid
Of embarrassment because
It only makes joy fade

Recognize that those you fear
Are just as scared as you
Content to sit, banter and watch
As your Courage breaks through
