Same Old Same Old

Same Old Same Old

“Lately” I hear people say
“There aren’t many who go
The extra mile, try harder
Who want to learn and grow”

It’s the word “lately” that makes me
Laugh a Warrior’s laugh
There’s nothing recent about the
Urge to only give “half”

It’s not just in the past ten years
That people have tried less
It has been thousands of years that
They’ve chosen to regress

For those who’ve only recently
Noticed the downward spiral
Welcome to being awake
To selfishness gone viral

There are those who are new to this
And they will act so shocked
“I can’t believe! I can’t believe!”
They’ve talked and talked and talked

But Warriors know very well
On which world they do dwell
They aren’t surprised when ugliness
Sprouts from this same old hell

They aren’t surprised, they don’t act shocked
They aren’t appalled or mad
They don’t treat laziness or selfishness
As a new fad

It is as old as the hills, mountains
Rivers, lakes and seas
The selfish quest for comfort, luxury
Enjoyment, ease

The Warrior accepts what is
The same old same old same
And they do not cry out in anger
Or try to lay blame

What it is is what it is
And all that one can do
Is disagree with how things are
And not let it change you

Not let other’s laziness
Stop you from choosing to
Walk an extra mile when
Another beckons you

Not let other’s fear distract
From what needs to be done
Not let other’s threats dissuade
And make you turn and run

Same old selfish, thoughtless world
With many who are dense
Who are oblivious, ungrateful
And take great offense

Nothing new about it, folks
It’s been that way forever
And since the dawn of time, there’s been
Warriors who would never

Let such fearful, selfish, shabby
People influence
Their attitude, their emotions
Their mood or common sense

“Beware the barrenness of a busy life.” ~Socrates

Sorry, I don’t have the time
To talk to you today
I’m too busy with my life
To hear what you’ve to say

I’ve got this thing to do right now
And it can’t wait a sec
But maybe if things do ease up
Can I get a raincheck?

Not sure when that will be though
This thing is so high stakes
I’m so invested and full-blast
I can’t put on the brakes

I wish I could put it on hold
And ask what’s new with you
But you have to understand
My spare moments are few

I’ve barely got the time to eat
Or make a change of clothes
Or watch the playoff game tonight
Or other favourite shows

Sorry, I wish I could help
There’s so much going on
I’m so tied up in my affairs
I’m just a bit withdrawn

With what is going on around
The world outside of me
Hopefully I’ll have time to
Open my eyes and see

That the greatest purpose in
Life is to serve others
Maybe once things calm a bit
I’ll have time for my brothers

I’ll tell you what, this thing I’ve got
Could hold on just a bit
It’s not the end of the world if
We take the time to sit

And now that I think twice about
This other thing I’ve got
It won’t take as much time as I
Thought that it would allot

And since there’s times I’m really bored
And have nothing to do
I’d feel like such a hypocrite
To have no time for you

When I stop and ponder how
The word “busy” is used
I realize I’m just asking
Myself to be excused

For only having time for me
And my selfish affairs
It’s not a word that’s ever used
By anyone who cares

So strike what I said earlier
I’m not busy at all
My stuff can wait ‘till later on
I’ve got time for your call

It’s funny how despite how busy
Every day would seem
I didn’t realize that time’s
Passing was not extreme

There’s always moments to step back
From our busy day’s work
Service is the one job that
We shouldn’t ever shirk

I Don’t Tweet

28 Nov

I Don’t Tweet

The social networking tool that
Is growing in support
More rapidly than most is the
One that must be kept short

Seems to me that everyone
Is Twittering today
But with just a hundred and
Forty letters to say

What is on your mind, our thoughts
Are being simplified
There isn’t much room to express
Inspire or confide

I tried it for a while, tweeted
Quotes that roused my vigor
But many times I couldn’t post
‘Cause limit wasn’t bigger

So I found myself tweeting
About trifling deeds
Like what I had for breakfast or
My material needs

A new trinket that’s coming out
That I would like to buy
And other times I’d use it to
Kvetch, complain and cry

I finally did recognize
That status line was not
An ideal place to show my thanks
For everything I’ve got

Instead, it’s just an exercise
In ego, bragging, whines
A warrior who has a point
Needs more than just 2 lines

I saw the limits they imposed
And the effect is makes
A growing group of people who
Do not have what it takes

To keep attention focused on
A write that’s longer than
One hundred and forty keys:
A “novel” for trash can

Part of being warriors
Is saying “Not for me
I don’t abide what’s going on
And I do disagree”

So I don’t tweet, it’s not for me
I just don’t see what good
Tweeting does, two lines cannot
Help you be understood

Status lines and cell phone texts
And very short e-mails
Modern day communication’s
Giant epic fails

I’ll keep to writing “novels” and
Poems more than a page
For the ones who seek to be
Inspired and engage

Have Book – Will Travel

2 Oct

Have Book – Will Travel

Feeling bored? Feel like you need
To take a trip somewhere?
Here’s a tip that doesn’t call
For flying through the air

Crack open a book and lose
Yourself within its pages
Many different worlds have been
Constructed through the ages

Oh, I know, you’re one of those
Who doesn’t like to read
Your lack of patience and craving
For TV does impede

But how often can you tell me
You’ve been completely drawn
Into all those TV shows
That only seem to spawn

Commercials for all the things
On which you’re pushed to spend?
Not to mention plot lines that
Don’t ever seem to end

And how easy is it to be
Transported elsewhere if
You’re in a movie theatre
And all you hear is sniff

And coughing, chatting, rustling
And chomping of popcorn?
All of these distractions leaving
You just feeling worn

Grab a book and crack it open
Sit down and breathe deep
Yes, I know the first few pages
Always seem so steep

But just like with anything else
If you can get momentum
You’ll be amazed at what that boring
Book will soon become

Despite not having flashing lights
Or any blaring tunes
Soon you’ll realize the best
Way to spend afternoons

Is not sitting in front of your
TV with mouth agape
Far off look in your eyes while
You’re hoping for escape

Only in the pages of
A good book will you be
Whisked away to other places
That you’d never see

Because the pages call you to
Be creative as well
To picture people and places
Imagine and foretell

It’s true when they say “less is more”
And most would not dispute
When a movie’s adapted
It isn’t as astute

As the book it was based on
Because they’ve taken out
All of our imagination
And put in throughout

Blaring sounds and S-F-X
And other baby food
Meant to spoon feed our senses
And keep all our eyes glued

Grab your remote and turn off
The lights and all the noise
Settle down with a good book
And the tale it deploys

Let your own imagination
Take you for a ride
Let the prose be your path and
Let author be your guide

Use those brain cells, interact
With stories you take in
Don’t just sit and vegetate
Because that does wear thin

Eventually you’ll feel boxed in
Because you’ve seen it all
Never having any say
Because of that fourth wall

But with a book you’re in control
Of what you hear and see
Not just shackled to the couch
But far away and free

The reason most enjoy the book
More than the movie is
Because the reader has more say
With books than with show biz

The reader can decide how someone
Would say certain lines
The reader is responsible
For clothes and set designs

The reader is empowered and
That’s why we all get lost
In the pages of the novel
And why they exhaust

Because we all participate
In the tale being told
Invested in the characters
As the myth does unfold

So turn off your TV and grab
A good old fashioned book
Or load one on your iPad, Kindle
Computer or Nook

And have a safe journey to where
The story will take you
Bon voyage, auf wiedersehen
Aloha, ciao, adieu
