King of Pain

29 Oct
crown
King of Pain

I wake up and the crown descends and digs into my skull
The King of Pain has risen and the day will not be dull
It won’t be numb, it won’t be foggy, cloudy, fuzzy, dim
Because I don’t use alcohol to make my aching slim

I don’t use weed to take the edge off of my Kingdom’s strain
I don’t use coke or smack to bring fleeting joy to my brain
I am a Warrior and I believe I do not need
Anything outside myself to survive or succeed

While peasants popped their pills at every hint of misery
While paupers took a swig or shot for one night to be free
While peons, rubes and boors lit up and blocked the pain with smoke
This King faced torment head-on and here’s what years did invoke:

Patience, perseverance, courage, adamance, resolve
Self-belief, self-confidence, incentive to evolve
Clarity to see that we empower all the things
From which we run and hide from, while confronting always brings

Growth and depth and understanding, confidence and peace
Normals robbed themselves each time they used something to cease
The lightning shooting through their nerves while Kings all choose to reign
Be challenged, tested, honed and forged by their Kingdom of Pain

The Right Place

The Right Place

“I just can’t seem to find someone
Who’s the right one for me”
Is what many single folks do
Solemnly decree

They talk about relationships
That ended up a waste
Never realizing it’s
Because they were not chased

Going to the bar does not
Count as making an effort
It’s just a place where people go
To drown sorrows and flirt

Superficial interactions
Lacking depth and soul
You’ll hardly ever meet someone
At one who’ll make you whole

“So if a bar’s not the right place
To find some soul and heart
Maybe a church is the best
Location to then start!”

If you think this to yourself
Be sure that you think twice
Just because someone believes
Does not mean they are nice

It’s been my experience
That churches, much like bars
Are just a place where people go
To try to forget scars

Despite their claims of following
Their Lord and Savior, Christ
I’ve met so many Christians
Whose temperaments were iced

They did not glow or radiate
With love and selflessness
They did not engage or welcome
Or any warmth express

“How ‘bout work? There’s a cute girl
Or guy I work beside
Surely they would make a perfect
Groom for me or bride”

Work’s another place that doesn’t
Usually pan out
Just one simple reason why
It’s not the ideal route:

Money is why so many
Couples who worked together
Were not able to endure
The harsh and nasty weather

Places where you make your dough
Are filled with people who
Are less concerned about others
Than making funds accrue

Same reason why many don’t
Have true friends at their trade
Most would throw you under bus
If it meant getting paid

“So not at bars or at a church
Or where you earn your pay
There’s got to be a place where folks
Can meet someone today!

How ‘bout school? There’s a guy or
Girl I’ve had my eye on”
Sorry, school’s the same as work
Your classmate will not fawn

Because, like work, they’re too busy
Accumulating grades
You’ll find about as much depth as
A quick game of charades

“So where’s a girl or guy supposed to
Find their one true love?”
I’ll tell you this, it likely won’t
Be one of the above

It probably won’t be wherever
You usually go
But something wonderful might happen
If you choose to grow

And venture out to new places
You haven’t ever been
Seeking something with more depth
Than just a lust for skin

I can only reassure
By telling you I’ve tried
All of the methods mentioned
And never found a bride

Until I left my comfort zone
And ventured somewhere new
That’s the only right place where
I found love that was true

Think about it, you won’t get
Your inspiration from
Negative and lazy people
Who are sour and glum

You won’t find hope among the folks
With whom you make your cash
Because the main thing on their minds
Is adding to their stash

And love is nowhere to be found
At places that serve booze
Bars are just places where folks
Go to drown all their blues

I cannot tell you exactly
Where “right place” may be
But it’s not part of your daily
Route, I’ll guarantee

If it’s love you’re looking for
The true and profound kind
The only way to find it is
If your legs are inclined

To move you out from your old path
And search new places where
Someone’s not just thinking of
Their own selfish affair

Their own pay or their drink or their
Own pass to pearly gates
Or their straight A’s, all of these things
Will lead to dead-end dates

Make an effort, seek and find
Get up and search for it
The right place is likely the  one
You currently omit

Shortcuts

Shortcuts

I wake up with a rush of pain
It courses through my frame
It leaves me short of breath and sets
My nerve endings aflame

My instinct is to reach over
And grab on my nightstand
A painkiller called Tramacet
With my numbed up, cold hand

I close my eyes and have to laugh
How that’s my first instinct
In the face of chronic pain
Not often have I blinked

Yet first thing in the morning when
My brain is all clouded
With buzzing pain and noise, my thoughts
Feel very much crowded

And the thought that knows the pill
Is just a quick shortcut
Gets lost among the others that
Want to bail out my butt

The problem with the bailing thoughts
Is that they think short term
They’re lazy, weak and cowardly
Afraid to ever squirm

And writhe and ache and throb with pain
They just want it to stop
They think everything will be fine
If that pill you just pop

Or throw back just a couple beers
Or something with more kick
Like whiskey, scotch or tequila
Become a numbed up brick

And if the liquid cure falls short
There’s always harder stuff
Things you can inject with needles
White dust you can snuff

I think the problem is that we
Don’t take the time to think
About the things we depend on
When we are at our brink

The reflex is to reach for something
That will fix our pain
So few see that we already
Have tools to sustain

Within ourselves, no pills or drink
Or drugs needed to aid
Focus, concentration and
Spirit will dull pain’s blade

Best of all, these cures won’t leave you
Trembling for more
Their effects do not degrade
From what they were before

Unlike pills, or booze or drugs
They grow stronger in time
Your natural abilities
Won’t ever pass their prime

Yes, sometimes you’ll need a hand
To make it through the day
To make yourself productive and
To endure all the fray

But take a moment to think of
The shortcut you are taking
And know you only circumvent
Whatever’s caused your aching

The only way to deal with it
Is with full faculties
The battle will be difficult
It will not be a breeze

But the more you deal with it
Without taking shortcuts
The quicker and much easier
You’ll find that pain’s door shuts

I pull my hand away from the
Nightstand and lay back down
I close my eyes and concentrate
While the pain goes to town

On my body, stabbing, clawing
Ripping at my joints
While it does its thing, I focus
On these finer points

I have the strength within myself
To endure its assault
Today is not the worst I’ve had
No need for the pill vault

I’ll keep it closed until a day
When I’ve tried all I can
Exhausted all my patience and
Don’t have a better plan

But today is not that day
I’ll take the long way there
‘Cause shortcuts only lead you to
Places you should beware

Edge

Edge

X’s on our hands reveal
The tribe of the Straight Edge
No drugs, no drink, no smoking too
Is in our daily pledge

We wear the X because we can’t
Display how we abstain
From all the screwed up substances
That will degrade your brain

A drinker puts bottle to lips
To show they love the booze
Liquid courage to relax
And wash away their blues

Smokers light a cigarette
That hangs off of their lip
To say “I know my lungs are black
And I don’t give a flip”

The drug user has many ways
To show their ecstasy
Needle marks and reddened eyes
Are signs of all their glee

But what about the Straight Edger
Who has no way of showing
All the things they believe in
And no one ever knowing

That’s why we choose to wear the X
On backs of all our hands
It symbolizes discipline
That our lifestyle commands

And if these words do come across
As somewhat condescending
That’s not the message most of us
Are actually intending

True, there are a few young ones
Who think it’s all a fight
Their pious attitude only
Manages to incite

But most of us do understand
That discipline’s no use
If you can’t control yourself
From giving out abuse

To those who choose to turn blind eyes
To poisons they put in
Themselves, all in a vain attempt
To gain a lasting grin

Control is what the Edge desire
And won’t give it away
Control of health, control of mind
Control of things we say

No hangover next morning
And no regrets about
What we may have done last night
Before we did black out

The courage to face any fears
Without a needed crutch
To not be trapped in inhibition’s
Terrifying clutch

And if that comes across to those
Who smoke and drink and use
As us saying that we are better
Then have fun with those views

But for the Edge the truth is known
About what X’s mean
Personal development
And always living clean
