You Know

You Know

“Tell me how to do it”
There are so many who ask
When they want help to overcome
Some scary, fearful task

To the people who have conquered
Lots of their own fears
The answers these trailblazers give
Is “blood and sweat and tears”

The question “How?” is asked because
The asker hopes to hear
An answer that will be easy
And quick and bring them cheer

They hope to hear a shortcut that
Has been eluding them
They’re hoping to discover that
Elusive hidden gem

That will deliver them from pain
From suffering and hurt
But deep down we all know those things
We simply can’t avert

You know all that you need to do
Stop hoping for a break
You know that it’s uncomfortble
And may cause you some ache

You know that it won’t be much fun
While you are doing it
You know that you cannot half-ass
And that it takes true grit

And biggest fact of all that many
Never seem to grasp:
You know that by the end after
You grunt and shake and gasp

That the toll that it takes does not
Last forever on you
It is replaced by something else
Because you gutted through

And that is courage, grace, resolve
And so much confidence
You know all that you need to do
So use your common sense

And stop asking all of the fighters
And warriors in hopes
That they will have a shortcut or
An easy way that copes

“THROUGH THE WALL!” they all will say
“NOT OVER OR AROUND!”
You know so stop asking and simply
Pound and pound and pound

Truth Hurts

Truth Hurts

I sat in darkness for a while
Comfortable, I thought
Details sharp, or so it seemed
‘Till one day I was taught

That what I had believed was full
Vision was true blindness
A mentor entered my life and
He caused me lots of stress

He pulled the blinds up and the light
Did hurt so intensely
“The truth can be quite painful for
All those who could not see”

I scolded him and cursed his name
“How dare you upset me?”
“Exactly,” he said with a smile
“I dare to set you free

Most would have you sit in darkness
Scared to pull the blinds
Fearful of hurting your feelings
Frightened, selfish minds

I have no qualms with riling you
‘Cause I know for a fact
It was painful for me as well
To find out what I lacked

I’m not concerned about your hurt
‘Cause I know it won’t last
Soon your eyes will focus and
You will not be aghast

Instead you will be grateful for
The chance to see things how
They were truly intended
When the light you allow

To fully shine through your window
Illuminating all
But it always takes someone
Who has a little gall

To not worry about upsetting
Your little ego
Silly fool, don’t you know it
Takes discomfort to grow?”

“You’re welcome” he said before my
Ego could muster ”thanks”
And off he went into the light
To combine with the ranks

Of the very few people
That had the guts to tell
The hurtful truth because they just
Wanted me to excel

Mr. Specific

30 Nov

Mr. Specific

There once was a man named Specific
Who liked things to be done his way
He wanted things all black and white
And never wanted them to be grey

“I’ve got this specific idea”
Specific would always proclaim
And if someone else deviated
He’d only look it as a shame

“It’s not what I’m picturing in
My head for this particular piece
It has to be exactly like
My idea for me to feel peace”

One day he encountered a man
Who went by the name Mr. Different
Who didn’t have the same idea
Which lead to a big argument

“It has to be like my idea”
Specific would fluster and shout
“Things must be just as how I thought them
There can be no alternate route!”

But Different’s idea worked as well
As Specific’s did, but he would not
Relent and accept that perhaps
There could be another good plot

So Different decided to call
All of the townspeople together
And they would all have a big vote
And together would all decide whether

Specific’s idea was the best
Or if Different’s plan was ideal
Different did not want to win
Instead he wanted to reveal

To Specific that people decide
Which way that things should now advance
That no idea is definite
Someone else’s thoughts could help enhance

The people all voted and said
Both ideas seemed to be very good
It shattered Specific’s perception
Dumbfounded and speechless he stood

Mr. Different smiled and then said
“There’s always more than one way to
Do something, it’s not just your own way
And your selfish Specific view”

I wish that I could tell you Specific
Had a change of heart like the Grinch
Unfortunately for Specific
Letting go would not be a cinch

For years did Specific and Different
Work on their ideas parallel
Different took in much advice
Specific would only repel

Different produced many things
That for many people did excite
Specific was not as productive
‘Cause he never could get things quite right

They had to be just as they were
Inside is his own ego-filled head
The thought of not getting his way
Filled Specific with fear and dread

And Different would just laugh and smile
And tell him “Get over yourself”
“Stop being so darned self-absorbed
And thinking just your mind has wealth

‘Cause everyone’s not going to look at
The world from the same point of view”
And left it then up to Specific
As to if he stayed little or grew
