Junk People

23 Dec

Junk People

“You are what you eat” as the old saying goes
But we’re also defined by the friends that we chose
Just like when we only consume junk food
Which leaves us lethargic and in a bad mood
So too do junk people have the same effect
Those who lack drive in us will reflect
The ones who are lazy, the ones so afraid
Malnourish our spirit and passion degrade
The ones who seek short cuts, the ones who complain
Junk people encourage our dread and disdain
And just as we must sometimes clear out the shelves
Of chocolate and chips to take care of ourselves
So too we must sometimes clear out our list
Of junk people who seem to constantly resist
The truth that we’re here to face challenges bravely
To not look on tests with an attitude gravely
To embrace change and seek, to grow stronger each day
To do all of the things that we so proudly say
The key to your health lies in foods consumed
The same goes for spirit, it lies in folks that bloomed
You must fill your circle with people who try
People who hope and themselves apply
Brothers and sisters who all show no fear
Who choose to inspire all those far and near
Don’t worry if you cannot track them down
I guarantee there’s quite a few in your town
But first you will need to clear junk people out
And once their effect of negative doubt
No longer lingers, you’ll finally see
The positive people who’ll help you be free
Of complaining and whining and accepting less
It’s these positive people that inspire success

Do The Work

22 Dec

Do The Work

A common response people have to many of my writes:
“If only we could be that strong and ascend to those heights”
Wishing will not get you there and waiting won’t help you
A Warrior once told me how, I’ll pass it on to you:
“Do the work,” he simply said and then sat silently
From his quiet tone I could tell that he could foresee
That most people he told this to would never do the work
They want the giant muscles but don’t do the clean and jerk
They want the toned athletic shape but do not want to sweat
They want to live a stress free life but continue to fret
They want the wisdom to live lives of substance, meaning, hope
But when the writings of wise men appear, they just say, “Nope”
“I’m not much for reading” or “I’m too busy right now”
“I’ve got a lot of things going,” “My schedule won’t allow”
If you do not make the time it will never be there
If you do not make the time it shows how much you care
That Warrior that spoke to me had encountered so many
That all wanted to be like him but very few, if any
Did the work to learn and grow, to master their own mind
They saw the price that must be paid and most of them declined
And now I know why he did speak so quietly that day
Why there was no vigor in the words that he did say
‘Cause most people just love the thought of being wise and strong
But do not like the hard truth that the training is lifelong
“Do the work” I say to all who think “I wish I could”
‘Cause wishing, craving, and waiting won’t do you any good

Your People

Anything of any worth in this life must be earned

Loyalty takes hard work as far as I am concerned

Yet many people pledge allegiance with no thought at all

No effort and no sacrifice, no passion and no gall

They simply look at their skin colour, see it’s white or black

And say others of the same hue are free from their attack

They label other people who were born under same flag

As fellow patriots with which to cheer and boast and brag

And those who are the same religion, that’s their people too

Confederates united AGAINST those who hate what’s “true”

They call them “My people” but never ponder what it took

To form that weak alliance, which is why so many shook

And faltered, crumbled to the ground over a little spat

Easy bonds that took no work can crumble just from chat

The truth is that “Your People” are just egos wrapped in same

Exterior of skin or flag or religion or game

The link is formed through shallow means of what the eyes could see

And when the topics go deeper, all that camaraderie

Quickly crumbles in the face of tempers that do flare

“You’re not the same at all!” they think as they become aware

A small iota of work’s done and quickly those allies

Are now betrayers who deceived with a shallow disguise

If anyone’s to blame for being fooled, I’d say it’s those

Who offered instant loyalty and never did suppose

That someone with the same skin may not hold the same ethics

That honour and integrity’s not something that’s ethnic

That empathy’s not exclusive to one theology

And all “Your People” quickly turn into “Your Enemy”

When time is spent and effort made to find out what’s beneath

The matching shell, familiar husk,  the carbon copy sheath

Alone Together

19 Dec

Alone Together

I’ve some time to kill before my work shift does commence
I head to William’s coffee shop, some java they dispense
I take a seat at a table that does have room for four
I take my laptop out and figure, “Time to write of war”
I look around for inspiration and see several souls
All sitting at tables for four with coffee and soup bowls
With laptops of their own or talking or texting on phone
Or simply staring out the window, in some other zone
A cop sits all alone beside me nursing his large drink
I’d love to sit and ask him, “So officer, what do you think?”
Another man peeks worriedly over his laptop screen
His eyes meet mine for a moment and I can’t help but glean
A look of worry, fear, concern, he feels threatened by me
“Who are you to pay attention? Be gone! Let me be!”
A lady reads her laptop with great worry on her brow
I can’t ask her if she’s alright, convention won’t allow
Not one of these lonely souls would welcome someone sitting
In one of their 3 empty seats, that is not at all fitting
“Mind your own damn business,  keep your distance, stay away”
“Are you insane? I don’t know you! Please leave without delay!”
Lonely people everywhere who wonder why they feel
So alone, yet are so blind to all their spikes of steel
To their barbed wire and stone walls erected in defense
Lonely people who hate people…that make any sense?

5000 Years

17 Dec

5000 Years

“I’m so appalled” and “I’m so shocked!” “I can’t believe my eyes!”
5000 years of history, yet billions are unwise
5000 years we have put pen to paper to record
Killing, anger and hatred yet so many are floored
Another car bomb goes off and another school shot up
The flock of sheep cry out, “GOD NO!” The Warrior says, “Yup”
Because the Warrior’s attention span is very sharp
Laser focus does prevent egoic need to harp
About the evils of the world, the Warrior has seen
The future right there written on the bright computer screen
It’s written in the history books, it’s told about in tales
On silver movie screens just how empathy always fails
EGO is the answer, now and then, forever more
EGO is the explanation to things you abhor
And since you do not recognize your own ego within
You gasp and *tisk* and hands tremble at other people’s “sin”
But if you were to recognize that parasite inside
If you shined the spotlight and no longer let it hide
You’d see quite clearly why such acts have been done all along
“I want, I want, I WANT, I WANT!” the ego’s classic song
Just think about how when you don’t get what you want, you’re mad
You’re frustrated, you’re angry, empathy goes down a tad
You didn’t gain so ego wants a balance, “They must pay!”
And so it inflicts suffering and misery, dismay
Vain attempts to set things right, it’s rage that spreads more rage
And onlookers get all upset and help to spread the phage
Take a lesson from the Warriors, the Zen masters
Tibetan monks and Samurai and rare Christian pastors
All filled with peace and grace who aren’t controlled, instead they own
Their feelings and emotions, never whine or gasp or groan
5000 years of history, yet so few pay attention
And act as if each tragedy requires apprehension
Spinning wheels and spitting drama, heads buried in sand
Unwilling to accept the truth, refuse to understand
“It’s too depressing! It’s too dark! I can’t live on this Earth!”
Then I suggest you grab your sword and let go of the mirth

Your Worst Enemy

12 Dec

Trojan

Your Worst Enemy

Your worst enemy is not a foe who caused you harm
Nor a former friend who did betray you with their charm
It’s not a former lover who ripped out your tender heart
It’s not a boss who treats you poorly at every day’s start
Here it is, the shocking truth, the plot twist in your tale:
YOU are your worst enemy, it’s YOU who drive the nail
Right into yourself each time you think others betray
Wake up, smell the coffee, no one thinks of you that way
You don’t have rivals in your life, you’re not Luke Skywalker
There is no villain clad in black, you don’t have a stalker
No one’s keeping tabs on you and plotting your demise
NO ONE GIVES A SHIT so wake up and open your eyes
All these crimes you think that have been wrought against poor you
Are simply figments in your mind that your ego did skew
You, yes, YOU are the culprit, you let others affect
You give permission and condone all of their disrespect
Yes, a tough plot twist to take, it was YOU all along
The scheming “phantom menace” who kept you from being strong
The mustache twirling ego who said, “What they think does count!”
Your unawareness of this heel means you cannot discount
The criticism, doubt, the hate, the lack of grace abound
Your true rival likes to point fingers up, down, all around
Here, there, everywhere except the one place it should point:
Turned back right to where the finger meets the knuckle joint
“Nah, it can’t be!” you may say, “That is too far a stretch!”
“How could I willingly make myself such a sad wretch?”
And that’s the thing, it’s not *willing*, you’re blind to ego’s spell
And long as you say “What ego?” you will writhe in its hell
But if you are a WARRIOR and turn your sword within
If you realize that YOU are where stress does begin
If you bring that sword down swift and hard right on the source
NO NORMAL WILL EVER KNOCK YOU OFF YOUR INTENSE COURSE
They’ll say, “You’re full of yourself!” but the opposite is true
With no ego inside, their hollow words will just pass through
With no effect, no wounded pride, no struggle, loss of joy
Surprise! Your worst enemy is the horse that stood in Troy
