Empathy and Proper Training

21 Jul

“Empathy is putting yourself in another’s shoes to find out what exactly that person is feeling or going through at the given time. It basically refers to being at a common wavelength with someone.”

~ Deepa Kodikal

But remember…

“It can be very dangerous to see things from somebody else’s point of view without the proper training.”

~ Douglas Adams

    Another perspective:

Highly effective empathics don’t need “Proper Training.” As with gifted warriors, they are blessed with abilities and qualities that enable them to contribute naturally and authentically.

I really appreciate your balancing the two quotes. Empathy is so important, yet I think that even though who are highly empathetic need a bit of training or guidance so as not to be overwhelmed by another’s emotions. There is some level of harnessing and control necessary, knowing the situations and individuals that deserve your full empathy versus those that are going to drain you without the other person taking anything to heart.
