Dark and Quiet

26 Nov

Dark & Quiet

This message is more specific
Than most that I do write
It’s directed at people who
Wage a similar fight

It’s for those who are dealing with
A chronic kind of pain
Physical in body or
Emotional in brain

I’ve managed to reintegrate
Myself in the workforce
After years of having my
Ailments take me off course

I was not able to pick up
Exactly where I’d left
Some factors had to be tweaked and
Conditions made bereft

When one is constantly in pain
Your senses grow intense
Making things a bit darker
Serves as a good defense

The normal lighting tubes above
Which most will pay no mind
Over prolonged hours cause
Fatigue is what I find

And so I’ve made an effort to
Keep man-made light around
Dimmer than normal in order
To feel much less wound

Darkened lenses on my glasses
Also help to serve
To block excessive lighting in
Which plucks the painful nerve

Yes, some will look at you strange
Or say, “You think you’re cool?”
But to me, he who worries of
Such things is the real fool

The other factor that has helped
Is to keep the noise low
I’ve made an effort to stay clear
Of those who do bellow

And speak more loudly than is needed
All that extra noise
Over time will only serve
To erode all your poise

The truth is that most people talk
Far more than is required
And I have learned that excess only
Leads to getting tired

I choose my actions carefully
And made what I have last
And that applies to talking when
I’m contacted or asked

It isn’t necessary to
Just yammer on all day
And being one who has learned this
I like to stay away

From those who have no concept of
“Enough” because they just
Serve to be another pain
That is upon me thrust

Dark and quiet’s how I work
And where my peace does thrive
Dark and quiet’s how this broken
Vessel does survive

You cannot stop your body from
Breaking down, but you can
Change your outside factors and
Devise a fitting plan

To work around what holds you back
But you must have the guts
To make accommodations even
If they’ll think you’re nuts

The Way of the Warrior is (ego)Death

The Way of the Warrior is (ego)Death

“In order to master yourself you need to kill your self.”
The key to change. Most will take these words literally and balk, but 1-in-100 will see the true message in these words. The “SELF” is the Ego. It’s only concerned about itSELF. It’s own feelings, comfort and joy. The Warrior is SELFless. It is what enables them to face challenges head-on and endure more in the name of love & grace than those who only worry about themSELVES.

Bushido: The Way of the Warrior is the Way of Death

I could see this book becoming easily misunderstood. It brims with warrior energy—especially beneficial for someone going through a particularly low or troubling period of their life where they need some motivation and can vicariously appreciate the struggles of others.

The simple message of the book is this: in order to master yourself you need to kill your self.

What does that mean? It doesn’t mean suicide. Far from it—in fact it is the opposite: it is a birth or a rebirthing. What we are killing is that part of ourselves which confuses our values, which puts us in tension with ourselves: the ego. In the words of Guru Prem, Tsunetomo is asking that the EGO become an AMIGO. It is TAMING THE WILD HORSE—and, subsequently, breaking her.

The style is aphoristic. That means its…

YOU Are The Problem

25 Nov

YOU Are The Problem

This message goes to anyone
Who struggles with a vice
And thinks that outside factors are
At fault, YOU should think twice

Do not blame your shortcomings
On anything but YOU
It’s time YOU took a moment from
Complaining to review

That YOU’re the one who isn’t trying
Hard enough to make
Your situation any better
And deal with your ache

YOU’re the one who lets others
Get all under your skin
That hands over the power to
Others who deal chagrin

YOU’re the one who isn’t trying
Hard enough to break
Bad habits, to realize
Giving in’s a mistake

YOU can’t blame the weather or
Blame the economy
It doesn’t take a microscope
To be able to see

That most things wrong in your life are
Because of YOU and how
YOU sit and play passenger
And constantly allow

Stressing factors to control
Your mood, your joy, your fear
Take a look in the mirror
And the real problem’s clear:

A person who can take control
But chooses to sit back
And hopes that things will get better
And prays to God for slack

The problem won’t be solved until
The person in the mirror
Leans a little closer and
Sees themselves a bit clearer

Sees the dormant Warrior
That’s sleeping deep inside
Realize the Creator
Already did provide

Everything that YOU need to
Conquer all of your fears
All of your frustrations and
Explore all new frontiers

Awake that fighting spirit deep
Inside YOU and YOU’ll see
The Warrior within YOU will
Proceed to set YOU free

Of all of your temptations and
Your shortcomings, your flaws
YOU’ll find that where before YOU ran
Your Warrior now draws

Strength from situations that
Would usually just drain
Everything’s a challenge to be
Conquered, even pain

Let the spirit of your Warrior
Awake and solve
The root of the problem and all
Your vices will dissolve

Responsibility

25 Nov

Responsibility. Every day I see people who refuse to take it. It’s big. It’s ugly. It’s scary. It’s abrasive. It’s offense. If smells bad. It’s all of the gross, yucky, unpleasant things that mommy and daddy taught you from birth to avoid, and it’s why these people I see who refuse to take it are often in bad moods and are having bad days. They sigh. They moan. They whine. And it’s all because they refuse to take responsibility.

The truth is that if you are feeling anything other than great right now, it’s because you’re hoping that someone else will deal with that big, nasty, smelly beast known as responsibility. The truth is that nobody is going to do it for you. The truth is that nobody *can* do it for you, even if they wanted to (and very, very few genuinely want to do that for you). Nobody can reach into your mind and pluck the feelings of sadness, frustration or fear from it.

I don’t feel sorry for people who are having a bad day. I have no sympathy for someone who is “down.” I don’t give “prayers” and “well wishes” to people who are struggling with issues that are being created by their own selfish, lazy ego. I don’t do these things because they would be futile attempts at reaching in and plucking out what ails them. Harsh? Sure, if you’re still fully controlled by your own ego. But if you’ve learned to recognize that it’s the ego that causes a person to write-off an entire day as “bad” because of one stupid, insignificant bump in the road during that 24 hour journey, then you too will see the ego for the ugly, ungrateful, exaggerating parasite that it is. It wants perfection. It’s miserable when it doesn’t get it. There’s no such thing as perfection, hence all of the miserable people on the planet.

Responsibility. It means looking in a mirror and staring at what is really preventing you from dealing with the problem. It’s not the asshole who pissed you off and “burned” you. It’s the person in the mirror who won’t let it go. Who thinks too highly of themselves and believes they’re owed more than they actually are. It’s the person in the mirror who thinks they’re more important and special to other people than they really are. It’s a lack of humility and grace expressed not by the person who caused the irritation, but by the fool in the mirror who won’t let it go.

Take responsibility for your own mood, emotions and attitude. Nobody decides how you feel unless you let them. Only a fool tries to control how another feels. And only a fool allows them to.

Selective Righteousness

24 Nov

Selective Righteousness

Many speak up when they’re asked
About their views on gays
The sheep recite the Bible verses
That they seem to praise

They talk about how God has said
That being gay is wrong
They say it’s written, black and white
And so they feel quite strong

But also there in black and white
It says to love all those
Who you consider “enemy”
To love all who oppose

It also says in black and white
To not be jealous of
What your neighbor has amassed
Instead, to show them love

In black and white it says forgive
And walk the extra mile
It says to not allow anything
To upset or rile

It says “Fear not, for I’m with you”
And yet those who oppose
Homosexuality
Ignore much of this prose

Selective righteousness, they pick
And choose what comes with ease
They passionately stand by scripture
That the herd does please

But anything that comes with effort
Pain or sacrifice
Swallowing of pride or ego
Simply won’t suffice

And so the Christians who think “gay”
Is wrong will honk their horns
In traffic when another driver
Frustrates them or scorns

They’ll see a comrade’s gain as something
They wish was for them
They’ll say “So happy for you” while
Inside they just condemn

They’ll claim to follow “Prince of Peace”
But try to shatter love
That one man has for another
In name of Lord above

They’ll look on two women who love
Each other with pure hearts
And all they’ll see’s anatomy
The human private parts

They see not souls and spirits, just
The vessels which expire
They do not realize within
Is energy much higher

They’re prisoners of dying flesh
To bones that bend and break
And they are terrified of those
Who are now wide awake

They’re threatened by the ones who see
Above, beyond, more deep
Because they followed their hearts and
No longer act like sheep

For those that pick and choose by what
Is easiest to follow
This Warrior has something bitter
That you must now swallow:

Your Prince of Peace, your King of Kings
Preached to just let it go
And He would be ashamed of you
To see the grief and woe

That you spread with your ignorance
Your lack of sight and feel
Your inability to recognize
A love that’s real

Go ahead and pick and chose
What will test you the least
Keep following just the scripture
Spouted by your priest

Immerse yourself in just what works
For sake of ease and pleasure
Follow just the lines that come
With no effort, just leisure

But one day death will come for you
And it will all make sense
The fading of your mortal body
Makes the truth intense

And you will come to see how silly
It was to judge those
Who simply had same genitals
Underneath all their clothes

Mileage

21 Nov

“It’s not the years, honey, it’s the mileage.” ~Indiana Jones

Mileage

I often hear from readers that
I’m quite wise for my age
They are surprised that someone with
So few greys can be sage

As a fedora’d hero once
Described, “It’s not the years
It is the mileage” that strengthens
Enlightens and clears

There’s many silver-haired children
Who walk the Earth each day
Many years under their belt
But no wisdom to say

They lived soft, comfortable lives and
Avoided sacrifice
They ran away from challenges
That were not “kind” and “nice”

Wrinkles do adorn their faces
And their backs are stooped
But these old children with Warriors
Can never be grouped

It’s not the years but mileage
Which makes one who’s a teen
Much more understanding, introspective
And serene

Because of losses they’ve endured
And hardships they’ve survived
These fresh-faced “kids” took Hell’s best shot
And conquered, thwarted, thrived

Although I’ve not yet seen forty
I’ve walked the extra mile
Enough to make my odometer
No longer compile

Years no longer have meaning
Grey hairs don’t upset me
Wrinkles and crow’s feet don’t make me
Wail like a banshee

Because I’ve learned that years do not
Reveal wisdom accrued
The key is mileage which isn’t
As easily viewed
