Reciprocate

7 Mar

“One of the main causes of burnout is a loss of reciprocity in social interactions. In other words, we have to give much more than we get back.” ~ Peter Richter

Reciprocate

Reciprocate, 4 syllables
A word that means “give back”
“Respond,” “return,” “reply,” “repay”
But one must have the knack

Of recognizing when one does
A favor unto you
And not just ones that cost a lot
But ones that cost a few

A couple seconds of your time
A few moments of thought
Don’t let someone’s kindness be
A gesture all of naught

Amplify the good that others
Take the time to show
When someone greets you, take a sec
To tell them back “Hello”

If someone spreads their joy and smiles
Then take your scowled frown
Reflect the warmth that they’ve shown you
And turn it upside down

If a person waves to you
It wouldn’t kill you if
You waved your hand right back at them
And not be such a stiff

And don’t just think the gesture must be
Paid back right away
Favors can be put in storage
For another day

Just don’t forget to pop the lock
And pull it out for use
A friendly gesture never given
Makes you seem obtuse

Yes, it’s nice to have people
Do thoughtful things for you
But kindness is a fountain whose
Supply you must renew

You can’t just take and take from it
One day it will run dry
Contribute to its selfless flow
Or kiss that spring goodbye

With seven billion people on
This planet that we live
The universal way to show
We care is when we give

So show some gratitude whenever
Someone does you right
Reciprocating has not once
Been shown to cause you plight

Don’t just be about yourself
And all that you can gain
Don’t sit still and watch as others
Give while you abstain

Reflect their grace and soon you’ll see
That others will in kind
Nothing’s as encouraging
As selflessness combined

    Beautiful message, Miro. 🙂

As adults, it is a little difficult, but possible, to adapt these kind of nice things. So, it would be the most wonderful thing if the parents themselves teach their children about showing care as a way of their daily lives, and not something which is forced upon them. Children learn and remember fast. Or just be like their role models in smiling often. 😀

And what I have seen, and which is truly amazing by the way, is watching those people who have this as a natural quality in them. We can always learn from them. 🙂

    Cheers!

Here is my smile. 🙂 And thank you for writing this.

So true, the role of parents is so important in teaching children this concept. But it’s good to know that even without guidance, we can all still uncover the universal truths that we all share within us with enough time and effort.
      Peace & grace,

Relfecting back the grace extended to us: how very spirit-warriorly this is! Yes, I am freshly resolved to put aside fear of “geekiness” and just shine back that grace to all others I enounter, today and on and on!

Very cool! I agree that it’s important to be kind and reciprocate when others do good deeds for us. 🙂

My problem has been in the past that I gave more than I received… there has to be balance in kindness, whether giving or taking. Another poem that has me thinking long after the last line.

    • Miro March 8, 2012 at 3:29 pm #

That is a tough one to come to terms with. You’ll just have to make peace with the fact that you’re 1-in-100, and very few will ever live up to your level of kindness, selflessness and generosity. 🙂

      • Christy Birmingham March 9, 2012 at 12:55 am #

Wow, thank-you Miro. What wonderful words. Your spirit exemplifies the meaning of kindness. I am so glad we have connected.

Wonderful poem and as always, filled with wisdom and truth – words that we can all learn from and live by, Miro. The most important things in life; love, kindness, generosity, peace, humanity, cost us nothing, but the returns to our souls are great – whether they are returned by those we bestow them upon or not doesn’t really matter in the long run. Well said, Miro, I loved reading this. ~ Julie 🙂
