Be Selfless

Be Selfless

I know it’s hard to just forgive
To say “Oh well, live and let live”
To do the right thing, let go and move on

I know the hurt they did to you
Feels like it cut and stabbed right through
To your heart and now you feel so withdrawn

And even though you know what’s right
You feel you just don’t have the might
To free that heavy burden from your soul

My word of advice isn’t to
Be nice or polite to those who
Steal joy and on your peace exact great toll

My only request: Be selfless
Don’t think of self and all your stress
‘Cause stress occurs just if ego resides

Hurt feelings and torment are
The evidence ego’s not far
It’s in that constant hurt that ego hides

Be selfless, think not of your pain
And more you’re selfless, more you train
The more you do not take things personal

The more you’ll see the deception
That ego has on perception
And soon from your eyes you will pull that wool

There is no way to rectify
The wrong things done that make you cry
And angry, hurt, frustrated and so sad

There’s no redemption for some deeds
And their ego rarely concedes
So be selfless or it will drive you mad

Be selfless and don’t keep score
Stop saying how they made you sore
Be selfless ‘cause it’s selfishness that makes

All the hurt and all the scorn
So be selfless and sound the horn
And witness how within spirit awakes

YOU Are The Problem

YOU Are The Problem

This message goes to anyone
Who struggles with a vice
And thinks that outside factors are
At fault, YOU should think twice

Do not blame your shortcomings
On anything but YOU
It’s time YOU took a moment from
Complaining to review

That YOU’re the one who isn’t trying
Hard enough to make
Your situation any better
And deal with your ache

YOU’re the one who lets others
Get all under your skin
That hands over the power to
Others who deal chagrin

YOU’re the one who isn’t trying
Hard enough to break
Bad habits, to realize
Giving in’s a mistake

YOU can’t blame the weather or
Blame the economy
It doesn’t take a microscope
To be able to see

That most things wrong in your life are
Because of YOU and how
YOU sit and play passenger
And constantly allow

Stressing factors to control
Your mood, your joy, your fear
Take a look in the mirror
And the real problem’s clear:

A person who can take control
But chooses to sit back
And hopes that things will get better
And prays to God for slack

The problem won’t be solved until
The person in the mirror
Leans a little closer and
Sees themselves a bit clearer

Sees the dormant Warrior
That’s sleeping deep inside
Realize the Creator
Already did provide

Everything that YOU need to
Conquer all of your fears
All of your frustrations and
Explore all new frontiers

Awake that fighting spirit deep
Inside YOU and YOU’ll see
The Warrior within YOU will
Proceed to set YOU free

Of all of your temptations and
Your shortcomings, your flaws
YOU’ll find that where before YOU ran
Your Warrior now draws

Strength from situations that
Would usually just drain
Everything’s a challenge to be
Conquered, even pain

Let the spirit of your Warrior
Awake and solve
The root of the problem and all
Your vices will dissolve

What If?

What If?

What if something does go wrong? What if it falls apart?
What if everyone does laugh and thinks I’m not too smart?
What if they think I’m a fool and think it’s a big joke?
What if I get nervous and start shaking and I choke?

What if the plan goes awry, what if something gets broken?
What if people aren’t happy and angry words are spoken?
What if folks are disappointed, saddened or upset?
What if all these things occur that haven’t happened yet?

What if you stopped worrying about what could go wrong?
What if you remembered that you’re focused, wise and strong?
What if you stayed present instead of living ahead?
You may just find your life will have not as much fear and dread

You Are Not A Warrior

“Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn’t even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back.” ~Heraclitus

You Are Not A Warrior

With seven thousand people on
This little page I’ve made
There is one thought that on my mind
Has occasionally weighed

The words of Heraclitus speak
Of how there are so few
Warriors while there are many
Targets just shot through

If you are on this page that claims
To be created by
A Warrior and is meant for
Those who wish to apply

The same virtues, then you must ask
Yourself which one are you:
Just another target or
One of the very few?

A Warrior does not wake up
And dread the day ahead
A Warrior does not wish he
Or she could stay in bed

A Warrior is strong enough
To be gentle but firm
A Warrior does not apologize
And does not squirm

You are not a Warrior
If you have no control
Over how much you do drink
Or food that’s in the bowl

You are not a Warrior
If people cause you stress
If you allow what others do
To influence, depress

You are not a Warrior
If you worry too much
You’ll never find a Warrior
Trapped inside of fear’s clutch

You are not a Warrior
If you are weak and scared
You are not a Warrior
If you have never dared

You are not a Warrior
If you’re concerned about
What others may think and let
Them fill your head with doubt

You are not a Warrior
If something offends you
Accusations and complaints
Only make ego stew

You are not a Warrior
If you wish it were easy
Or if you are a man and treat
Women dirty and sleazy

You are not a Warrior
If you have read this piece
And feel pissed off and press “Unlike”
And make the count decrease

You are just a target that’s
Been hit, bullseye, once more
As they say, “On your way out
Don’t let your ass hit door”

‘Cause I don’t have the time to waste
On people who can’t see
That every single person has
The potential to be

A Warrior but few step up
And make the sacrifice
So if you are a target then
You don’t need my advice

Matters

“Things that matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least” ~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

What Doesn’t Matter

It doesn’t matter when they insult
Or when they offend
It doesn’t matter if you feel
Betrayed by foe or friend

It doesn’t matter when a person
Passes on the buck
It doesn’t matter that they’d rather
Be a lazy schmuck

It doesn’t matter when a person
Questions your actions
It doesn’t matter what they say
Or their doubtful reactions

It doesn’t matter when they don’t
Follow through on their word
It doesn’t matter if your disappointment
Goes unheard

It doesn’t matter if you don’t
Hold grudges for wrongdoing
Use your time for things that matter
And should be pursuing

Things That Matter

It matters when you get upset
And what you choose to say
It matters if you take it in
Too sensitive a way

It matters when you don’t come through
On promises you’ve made
A declaration of assurance
That has been betrayed

It matters when you have the knowledge
To make the right choice
But eat junk food because it’s drowned out
By your craving’s voice

It matters when you choose to sit
When your legs work just fine
And simply watch TV and any
Exercise decline

It matters when you complain and
Don’t choose to let it go
It matters when you do not do
And only choose to know

‘Cause wisdom comes from doing things
That matter, while knowledge
Is simply unused insight learned
In institutes like college

Know the difference between things
That matter and do not
“Does this matter?” should always
Be a recurring thought

And you will be surprised at how
Few things actually matter
In time the trivial things will
Disperse, diffuse and scatter

Leaving those few things that do
Matter to great degree
Impossible to ignore ‘cause
They’re all that’s left to see

The 1-in-100 Warrior Award: You As A Machine

“Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn’t even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a Warrior, and he will bring the others back.” ~Heraclitus

The way of the Warrior is not only about pushing yourself mentally, but physically too. There is a direct connection between your soul and body. As C.S. Lewis once said, “You don’t have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body.” And that’s all you truly have in this world. You may think you have a house, a car, a job, pets, even friends and family, but all of these things won’t necessarily be around until the end of your life. Some of them may even be gone tomorrow. Your body is the only constant from birth ’till death, and what you do with it plays a large part in your creativity, your productivity and your attitude.

Those who mistreat their bodies with lack of exercise and unhealthy eating are lying to themselves if they think they can get away with it. You’re lying to yourself if you think that you can push yourself mentally while taking shortcuts physically. Warriors are honest. They know the truth. They don’t lie to others, but more importantly, they don’t lie to themselves. They go into the gym knowing full well the importance of overcoming the challenge before them. How overcoming discomfort and physical difficulty makes you grow stronger not only in the gym, but when you’re dealing with an undisciplined, lazy, selfish and comfort-seeking person who makes the choice of unloading their frustrations on others. The Warrior felt their legs burning during that run or jog, or during that time on the Stairmaster, or during those squats, and persevered through it. The Warrior sees the undisciplined mind lashing out due to discomfort and remembers their own discomfort that was conquered. The Warrior keeps calm. Warriors see people throw fits from being pushed by challenges and remember constantly being pushed by weights. Warriors push back, and they understand that it takes focus, concentration and controlled, deliberate intensity over a sustained period of time to push back. They don’t snap back and bicker, because they’ve learned that doesn’t do you any good in the weight room.

And while so many fly off the handle or get stressed, Warriors choose to be calm, just as they choose the healthy food option when they’d much rather enjoy the unhealthy choice. Everything’s connected. The amount that you push yourself physically with exercise and how much you push against cravings is directly connected to how hard you’ll push yourself to excel at your job, to make the extra effort to start and finish that creative project you were thinking of doing, and how much you’ll expect of yourself when things don’t go as planned.

You As A Machine is a Warrior. We hear so many women talk about all of the weight they gained after having kids, and not being able to lose it. We hear so many talk about how as they grow older, the weight starts to pile on and won’t come off. As a 40 year old mother of two, You As A Machine is a reminder of the potential that we all have within us if we push ourselves. Here’s what a 40 year old mother of two achieved when she refused to lie to herself and chose to follow that innate truth we all have within us:

She’s an inspiration to everyone who ever listened to their own excuses as to why they’re not in the best shape they can be in, and an encouraging reminder to all those that listen and follow their own truth. True, some of us have rips, tears, breaks and other physical issues that will keep us from having washboard abs and bulging muscles, but the point isn’t to rise up to the level of other people’s potential, it’s to rise up to your own level. I know all about that, having suffered a permanent shoulder injury years ago. Despite the constant pain and weakness, I’m still in better physical shape than a vast majority of people I encounter every day that have no injuries or health issues. It’s because I push myself to my own limits and realize my own potential. I could be overweight and use the excuse of “I’m hurt” and nobody would fault me for it. But I’d be lying to myself. Just as You As A Machine could use her age and the fact that she’s had two kids as excuses to be overweight, but she doesn’t lie to herself either. She not only pushes and reaches her limits everyday, but serves others by giving advice and guidance on how they too can fulfill their own potential. She’s 1-in-100, and we are lucky to have her: http://youasamachine.com/

Guidelines for the 1-in-100 Warrior Award: To acknowledge and honor the rarity of the Warrior, it is recommended that the recipient passes this award on to only *one* other blogger that they feel goes above and beyond to serve and inspire others, and who maintains their grace and positivity even in the face of difficult challenges, such as health issues, tragedy, injustice or loss.

Once an author is given the award, they may continue nominating one new blog author once a week, month, year… or whatever seems appropriate. It’s like a knight’s ability to bestow knighthood onto another whenever they choose. But only one at a time. The patience of a Warrior is required.

Woe is Me

“Do not listen to those who weep and complain, for their disease is contagious.” ~Og Mandino

Woe is Me

Allow me to use my soap box
To cry about my woes
I’d like to writhe in misery
And focus on my lows

I will express ingratitude
By focusing on times
That hurt, frustrated, caused me stress
The awful unjust crimes

Instead of thinking all about
The good things in my life
A father, mother, brothers, sisters
Nieces, nephew, wife

Employment when so many can’t
Get hired anywhere
Ability to walk when some
Are confined to wheelchair

Woe is me! Forget all that!
This is about my hurt!
Because I didn’t get the things
For which I did exert!

My fears about the things I’ll lose
My angst for selfish wants
My nightmares that I can’t let go
Of old forgotten haunts

I take the time to create this
And hope it will be read
Because I need someone to say
“Please feel better instead!”

And I will still not figure out
It won’t do any good
Until I stop my complaining
And do the thing I should

Because a write of angst does not
Inspire or empower
It helps not author or reader
To light their darkest hour

Perhaps some day I will attain
This universal fact:
That woe is NOT me, I am not
Damaged, broken or cracked

I have a well of strength within
Of love and grace and peace
But when I cry about myself
All of these virtues cease

Anyways, back to my tears
And bitter agony
My torture, torment, misery
My me and me and me

Let me know how much you care
By saying “It’s alright!”
“Hope that you feel better soon!”
And “Have a pleasant night!”

We’ll keep it up ‘till one of us
Sees that it goes nowhere
And recognizes there’s no point
To writings of despair

(In case you cannot detect my
Sarcasm in this write
I am not really suffering
From anguish or from plight

I am a warrior which means
When going does get tough
I do not cry, instead I say
“I haven’t had enough!

One more just like that and then
Another if you please!”
Think of this woeful poem
As just a little tease)

Peaceful Christmas

“I do like Christmas on the whole…. In its clumsy way,
it does approach Peace and Goodwill.  But it is clumsier every year.”  ~E.M. Forster

Peaceful Christmas

Merry Christmas, everyone!
I hope it’s filled with joy
But warriors are realistic
And know some annoy

Many waited until now
To get their shopping done
Recall my rhyme on consequences
It won’t be much fun

You’ve chosen to put it off ‘till
The very last minute
No complaining or frustrations
Or throwing a fit

Breath real deep as you brave all
The madness at the mall
Accept the situation that
You create when you stall

Many will have family
Come by for Christmas feast
And if you never have parties
Your stress will be increased

Recognize you’ll fall to level
Of your training now
Of course you cannot handle it
When they all come for chow

You cannot have a get-together
Only once a year
And expect all day to feel
Peaceful, joyous and cheer

Everything won’t go exactly
As you’ve planned today
Let it go and just allow
Things to flow as they may

Keep in mind the reason for
All of our celebrations
For presents and for all your guests
Let go your expectations

It isn’t about you at all
This day’s for something more
This day’s your opportunity
To show that you adore

All your friends and family
And others on the Earth
This is how the warrior
Honors the Savior’s birth

A symbol of pure selflessness
An icon of pure love
Embodiment of acceptance
From the Lord up above

Remember that when something threatens
To disrupt your peace
On your Christmas day, all those
Annoyances release

And don’t forget to keep it up
On 26th as well
Let it be a launching pad
For training to propel

And if you keep it up for an
Entire year, you’ll see
Just how peaceful your next Christmas
Will happen to be

                                         ~Merry Christmas, warriors!

Redefine

Redefine

One of the main reasons why
We’re not where we could be
Is ‘cause we go along with definitions
And agree

We hear such words as “ego” and
“Busy” and do not think
What the words do truly mean
Without giving a blink

Accepting common definitions
Words like “deep” and “ego”
It’s time to change how we define
Some of the words we know

Take control and redefine
The words that you employ
Erase, expel, remove, delete
Obliterate, destroy

Every definition that
You’ve grown accustomed to
Give those words some deeper thought
And redefine your view

“Ego” isn’t just a way
Of saying “I” or “me”
It’s the single biggest block
To all that you can be

“Busy” doesn’t mean that you
Are always on the go
Now it seems to only speak
Of non-stop work and woe

Something’s only “deep” if you’re
Always too far away
To recognize the truth that it
Is trying to convey

“Stressful” is a made-up word
For things you CAN control
But choose to let your “ego” rule
And drag you down that hole

“Jealousy” should not be used
When telling all your friends
That you envy them because
Of selfishness it sends

Think about those words you use
That reflect selfish things
Redefine and recognize
And see the strength it brings

To stand apart and think alone
And never be constrained
By shallow definitions that
Leave much to be explained
