“Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like.” ~Will Smith
Impressed
There’s only one you must impress
And it is not your boss
It’s not your family or friends
Or the man on the cross
It isn’t strangers that you don’t
Know anything about
There’s only one you must impress
If you are to gain clout
If you are to gain some peace
And focus and resolve
When trying to impress you must
Just your own self involve
No one else can judge you or
Knows what your limits are
Better than you do yourself
And knows how very far
You can push yourself to going
When you are applied
When you focus, concentrate
And increase your short stride
“I’m impressed” from someone else
Should not make you that proud
If that voice inside of you
Says “You have not allowed
Yourself to go the extra mile
To give a little more
To push your limits even further
Than they were before”
The catch is that your voice inside
Is never satisfied
It never will say “I’m impressed”
And fill you with great pride
And that’s exactly why you should
Always pay it most heed
While others will say “Well done!” your
Voice inside says “Exceed!
Keep it up, don’t let up now!
You aren’t finished just yet
‘Impressed’ won’t happen ‘till you’re sore
And tired, drenched in sweat!”
They say we’re our own worst critics
I’d like to redefine:
I say that no one but ourselves
Can so strongly incline
Nothing but that inner voice
Can push you all the way
Past “impressed” to something more:
Fulfillment to display
