Tool-Less
I spoke the other day about
How calendar does not
Decide when one’s a warrior
And neither does the spot
Another thing that doesn’t rule
On who’s a warrior
Is weapon, tool, instrument or
However you refer
To something that one must employ
In order to be that
A baseball player isn’t one
Unless he has a bat
A pitcher isn’t more than someone
Just standing around
Unless he has a ball to throw
And stands atop a mound
A hockey player needs his skates
To do the thing he is
A student isn’t one unless
He has to take a quiz
Writers cannot claim to be
Unless they have a way
Of taking down and recording
All of the things they say
Artists need their brushes and
Their canvases and clay
Dancers need their music on
And actors need their play
Musicians can make no music
Without drums and guitars
Even alcoholics can’t
Get drunk without their bars
On and on I see people
Who are by tools defined
I think of what I am and it
Gives me great peace of mind
I am a warrior and I
Don’t need a sword or shield
In any situation it’s
My own strength that I wield
My patience, grace, my fortitude
And my intensity
Aren’t dependent on if I
Have electricity
My supply of focus and
Courage will not run low
My resolve and my balance
Aren’t funded by my dough
You’re given everything that you
Require at your birth
Don’t believe materialistic
Things define your worth
The most important thing to be
Is tool-less in an age
Where everyone uses them to
Evaluate and gauge
“What you see is what you get”
Is our mentality
Warriors rely on what’s
Inside and are tool-free
