What I Don’t Want

“When you don’t get what you want, you’re unhappy. When you get what you don’t want, you’re unhappy. Even when you get what you want, you’re still unhappy, because it doesn’t last forever.” ~Socrates, Way of the Peaceful Warrior

What I Don’t Want

I don’t want people to be kind
And thoughtful and relate
I don’t want people to let go
Of all their ancient hate

I don’t want people to give of
Themselves without a thought
Of what they will get in return
And what to them is brought

I don’t want people to try hard
To go the extra mile
I don’t want strangers to say “Hi”
And give a friendly smile

I don’t want people to accept
Their struggles just as tests
I don’t want them to stand up straight
And beat upon their chests

I don’t want people to be strong
Courageous, passionate
I don’t want people to refuse
To ever, ever quit

I don’t want people to be patient
With others who stress
I don’t want people to be graceful
With those who aggress

I don’t want people to let go
Of petty little things
Like grudges, bitterness, insults
Cheap shots, offenses, stings

As long as I don’t want these things
I will not be unhappy
Whenever I see people treat
Each other very crappy

Reciprocate

“One of the main causes of burnout is a loss of reciprocity in social interactions. In other words, we have to give much more than we get back.” ~ Peter Richter

Reciprocate

Reciprocate, 4 syllables
A word that means “give back”
“Respond,” “return,” “reply,” “repay”
But one must have the knack

Of recognizing when one does
A favor unto you
And not just ones that cost a lot
But ones that cost a few

A couple seconds of your time
A few moments of thought
Don’t let someone’s kindness be
A gesture all of naught

Amplify the good that others
Take the time to show
When someone greets you, take a sec
To tell them back “Hello”

If someone spreads their joy and smiles
Then take your scowled frown
Reflect the warmth that they’ve shown you
And turn it upside down

If a person waves to you
It wouldn’t kill you if
You waved your hand right back at them
And not be such a stiff

And don’t just think the gesture must be
Paid back right away
Favors can be put in storage
For another day

Just don’t forget to pop the lock
And pull it out for use
A friendly gesture never given
Makes you seem obtuse

Yes, it’s nice to have people
Do thoughtful things for you
But kindness is a fountain whose
Supply you must renew

You can’t just take and take from it
One day it will run dry
Contribute to its selfless flow
Or kiss that spring goodbye

With seven billion people on
This planet that we live
The universal way to show
We care is when we give

So show some gratitude whenever
Someone does you right
Reciprocating has not once
Been shown to cause you plight

Don’t just be about yourself
And all that you can gain
Don’t sit still and watch as others
Give while you abstain

Reflect their grace and soon you’ll see
That others will in kind
Nothing’s as encouraging
As selflessness combined

The Missing Piece

“All along I’ve shown you by example that a warrior’s life is not about imagined perfection or victory; it is about love.” ~Dan Millman, “Way of the Peaceful Warrior

The Missing Piece

As I have beat my chest and claimed
“A warrior am I!”
There have been many that claim to
The same virtues apply

I’m always joyed to meet another
Warrior in heart
But sometimes they seem to be missing
The most crucial part

They speak of strength and wisdom but
Their motivation’s not
The same as what I believe that
The warrior has got

Love is what it’s all about
The driving force within
It is not fame or money or
Awards or a big win

My cause is always rooted in
My love for those that share
The air I breath, the ground I walk
For those not yet aware

Of all the strength and fearlessness
That they possess but never
Cultivate it, let it out and
Take control forever

It’s very obvious to me
When someone’s motivation
It not a selfless one, instead
It’s on their own fixation

Their own success, their own advance
Their own fortune and fame
One cannot be a “warrior”
If driven by acclaim

They never seem to share knowledge
From others who are wise
They often quote themselves as they
Inspire and advise

Be weary of the ones that claim
To be warriors but
Seem to think quite highly of
Themselves and tend to strut

Flash their name at every chance
And make real sure no one
Ever quotes a single line
Unless credit is done

The warrior is selfless and
Before themselves puts you
Beware impostors who just want
To make their wealth accrue

You’ll see the truth when you meet them
Your intuition knows
The missing piece of love will always
Shed light and expose

For love does radiate, it is
The peaceful, guiding light
That those out for themselves will never
Manage to ignite

                         Love,

Highlight

Highlight

A healthy exercise is to
Look back upon your day
At all the things you did and then
With all your vigor say:

“This one thing’s the highlight of
My last twenty-four hours
It reflects what I can do
When I use all my powers

My concentration, focus and
My courage and resolve
This one highlight is another
Step to help evolve

Into something stronger, faster
Wiser, more aware
It shows that I am trying hard
It shows that I do care”

I challenge you to do it now
Look back on yesterday
Was there one bright, shining spot
Or was it all just grey?

Did you make an effort to
Illuminate one thing?
Or did you let the ball blow by
Without taking a swing?

I challenge you to make damn sure
That when the day is done
And you go search for your highlight
That you have more than one

I challenge you to have your pick
From several different cases
Where you overcame your fear
Or displayed your good graces

Do not dwell on dark, low points
It’s best to let those go
And instead please focus on
Points that emit a glow

When Nobody Cares

When Nobody Cares

I know well how it feels
You hope your work appeals
But no one pays attention
To your soulful invention

It came straight from the heart
A writing, song or art
But it falls on deaf ears
And quickly disappears

It seems that no one cares
Nobody stops and stares
No one has the time
To notice your sublime

And if it leaves you sore
How many do ignore
If nobody cares
About all your affairs

Just keep in mind one thing
As you paint or write or sing
There’s one who’ll always care
One who’s always there

One with gratitude
Who cannot be subdued
One who seeks your work
And it gives them a smirk

It’s you and you alone
Don’t ever cry and moan
That no one’s following
Please end your wallowing

And realize the one
That will not ever shun
Who knows just what you meant
Gives you accomplishment

Is none other than you
So next time you feel blue
That no one gives a crap
Just give yourself a slap

And know the only soul
That you achieved this goal
In honor of was yours
‘Cause it never ignores

It’s the one that matters
Appreciates and flatters
Makes you feel fulfilled
And sees that you are skilled

Appreciate yourself
Don’t look for fame or wealth
Because all of that pales
To what self-respect entails
