Finish It!

Finish It

Being someone who works hard
At many different things
I’ll often get a person who
Comes up to me and sings

“I’ve got an idea that I think
May be right up your alley!”
The problem is they don’t stick to
It until the finale

If someone gave me a nickel
For every great idea
I’d have enough to purchase both of
North and South Korea

They talk about their master plan
Excitement in their eyes
Strictly focused on the joy
That will come with the prize

But somewhere down along the road
Towards the finish line
Things don’t always go so smooth
What’s this, a steep incline?

An effort that must be expended?
Sweat that must be poured?
Oh no! Some hard work before you
Can claim your sweet reward!

I’m not the brightest guy around
I’m not the wisest either
Most talented in my field
Or passionate, I’m neither

The key to my success has been
That I will never quit
While everyone is tapping out
I just will not submit

I haven’t finished everything
That I’ve ever conceived
But the ratio of all
The things that I’ve achieved

Is high enough to make me proud
Of all the things I’ve finished
One or two things in limbo
Don’t make me feel diminished

But most of the ideas I hear
Don’t ever leave the ground
It starts with so much excitement
But then I have to hound

And pester and ask, “What’s the word?
Have you done any work?”
More often than not I hear
That they have had to shirk

Their wonderful idea because
They’ve been extremely ‘busy’
This pattern of vigor and then
Indifference makes me dizzy

Hold on to that feeling of
Excitement at the start
You’re going to need it all the way
Because it will depart

As you find out it takes time
And effort to complete
This wonderful idea you have
This monumental feat

Sorry if I come off crass
But I’ve just had my fill
Of great ideas that people have
Before they climb the hill

I’ve had too many conversations
Where I ask about
That great idea that never flew
Because someone bailed out

“Finish it!” I can’t resist
From saying anymore
“Shut your mouth and move your legs
Until they’re nice and sore”

‘Cause anyone can talk about
A great idea that came
It’s the ones who finish it
That will get the acclaim

Compliment

Compliment

I’d like to talk a bit about
The compliment today
The act of praise or admiration
To others we display

Specifically I’d like to delve
Into tepid acclaim
The kind of kudo that comes off
As shallow or just lame

I’ve never been one to hold back
When something grabs my eye
If something is phenomenal
I won’t try to deny

That the one who fashioned it
Does have a lot of talent
I’m not shy about giving praise
In fact I am quite gallant

The reason for my willingness
To compliment with vigor
Is because I’ve noticed most
Applause could be quite bigger

I’ve seen great things called “Pretty good”
And awesome called okay
I’ve seen creatives pour their heart
While no one gave a hay

I’ve seen musicians play with passion
In front of a small crowd
Who ignore the talent by
Conversing very loud

Clap whenever the musician
Finishes their tune
Then go back to yammering
While singer tries to croon

I’ve seen directors make their films
With message and with heart
Only to have know-it-alls
Go tear the flick apart

Miss the sweat and tears and blood
That went into the tale
And only nitpick over where
The lights and sound did fail

I’ve seen artists design an opus
With pastel and paint
Only to have people glance
And quickly and say, “How quaint”

I don’t make creative works
For something in return
Compliments are no longer
A thing for which I yearn

I think it’s because most of them
Just fell too short for me
One too many people who
Chose to subdue their glee

But for those who haven’t yet
Starved from the lack of zeal
I think it’s important to let
Them know just how we feel

So next time you think “Pretty good”
Please ask yourself one thing
Are you holding back because
Your ego just might sting?

Is it hard for you to grant
That someone else is great?
Does complimenting other folks
Make your own pride deflate?

Or maybe it’s a sign that you
Simply don’t give a care
“Not bad” is a great way to
Make everyone aware

That you have not taken the time
To hear the message sent
So take a moment and convey
Through hearty compliment
