“People say “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” True, but it goes beyond that. Don’t judge a book by its first words, first paragraphs, even its first pages. In fact, don’t judge a book until you have fully read and comprehended it.”
~Ryan M. Nash
“Good Looking”
A chiseled jaw, intense blue eyes
And flowing, thick, dark hair
Some people seem to think that I’m
“Good looking” and they stare
I see some guys who are intimated
By my look
I shake my head as they don’t think
Of the pain that it took
The discipline to watch my diet
And will to work out
They fail to realize it was
Work that made good looks sprout
I see a few women act shy
Bashful, timid, demure
In the presence of this “tall,
Dark, and handsome” allure
I see this shyness as quite silly
‘Cause when I was young
It wasn’t envy that they had
Instead, cruel words were slung
“Fatty fatty” the kids called
“You big, fat, ugly nerd!”
And many other insults which
Long time I have not heard
Because I learned about my health
And started working out
Their hatred for my physique soon
Silenced into a drought
And there under that “ugly, fat”
Exterior was a
“Brooding, tall, dark, handsome man”
(Or so the women say)
And now that all the fat is gone
People are not as vocal
They are too shy to speak their minds
When pleasant looks are focal
It’s taught me quite a bit about
The way that people judge
They do misuse their eyes to form
A silly, stupid grudge
And on the flip side, someone who’s
“Good looking” makes them flutter
Attractive faces and bodies
Make many melt like butter
But not many speak up and say
That they like what they see
Maybe they’re just jealous ‘cause
It’s how they want to be
As one who’s made the journey from
“Ugly” to “Quite appealing”
Let me reassure you that
Eyes are not truth revealing
Close your eyes and realize
That we are all the same
Every single person has
A coinciding aim
And that is to be recognized
For what is deep within
Not to be identified
Just by our shallow skin
~Miro

I know whereof you speak — you are the same person inside no matter what you look like, but people are not willing to see past it. I have had a similar experience and you just want to laugh at those who once made fun of you and now are shy of you — but you will still find many people who are with you no matter how you look – they see you for you
So true! One of my favourite people ever was my grandfather who was blind. He was a wonderful man who showed me a glimpse of what we could be if we never relied on appearance to judge, but listened instead.
so very true–I bet your grandfather would have been that way even if he could “see”–he obviously could see better than most of us
Miro yes unfortunately many only look skin deep. Its what’s within that counts. And working as I do with those whose looks can be off putting due to their disabilities. I see those looks often.
A hansome photo of you Miro. And a wonderful poem.
Keep shining your warrior spirit. For it is what is within that shines without. And you shine bright. – Sue
Thank you, Sue. It’s a shame so many have that reaction to those with disabilities. I like to tell people who become uncomfortable with it that they could be the selfless, understanding and beautiful people that they have the potential to be…if they just closed their eyes.
YAY ….A PICTURE OF YOU
27″ BLEW YOU UP !

I love the poem too
but’s it’s nice to see you
You are handsome
it’s the insides that count
we all know that
and one human emotion – i can never ever understand
is JEALOUSY
Happy to see you my bro
here is a great quote xx

Beautiful poem Miro. Keep shining your loving and warm spirit. You are beautiful inside and out. I wish more people looked skin deep. We are all going to get old and lose our appearances. What we are on the inside will always remain.
Wonderfully spoken. It is quite sad that people can be so judgmental… Beauty shines from within.
Well said, Miro, and so true just how people fail to look deeper into a person’s soul, rather than stopping at the outward appearance…And a very handsome photo of you, too! Thanks for sharing your personal story and turning it into a message everyone should read! xx
It really is important to see what is inside. So many people only look at the appearance. Thanks for sharing your own experiences with us xx
Hey, guy, don’t you KNOW you are a heart throb kind of guy for all us old ladies south of the Canadian border?
I can connect so much to this poem too. I was a gawky, bespetacled, pimply teen. From ugly duckling i never realised how i metamorphosed into a swan. Soon i was perceived as pretty and ppl’s behavior towards me changed a lot. Though at heart i was the same, shy, sensitive girl.
This brought along another set of problems-i was never given credit for my hardwork. Ppl assumed i got good grades bcoz of my looks or my smile. That was a very difficult period for me. Now i hav fought hard to be taken seriously and for folks 2 luk beyond my luks.
Thankyou for writing this poem. Itz amazing
