Following their exit from the EFL Trophy during the week, Manchester United u21s returned to PL2 action hosting Everton yesterday.

United took an early lead at Leigh Sports Village in just the 7th minute through Joe Hugill.

Isak Hansen-Aaroen took out the Everton defender with a perfectly weighted through ball to Sam Murray racing towards the byline to cut back for Hugill to slot home from six yards out.

The young Reds doubled their lead on the half hour mark with a clever free kick from Shola Shoretire.

After being fouled on the edge of the box, Shoretire stepped up to cleverly roll a shot under the jumping Everton wall and into the bottom left corner.

Hansen-Aaroen had a chance to make it three just before the break, but the young midfielder could not keep his curled effort on target.

It went into the break 2-0 to United with Travis Binnion’s side controlling much of the first half.

Everton pulled one back early into the second half though. A counter attack opened the chance for Sean McAllister to get down the right wing and float a misguided cross straight into the back of Elyh Harrison’s goal.

United restored their two goal lead in the 79th minute when Hugill added his second of the match and seventh on the season.

United’s high press paid off and Mateo Mejia was able to win possession high up the pitch to quickly play Hugill into the box to finish low from a wide angle.

Hugill’s brace was enough to secure the three points for United and move them up to 10th in the table and securely in a play-off qualification spot.

United: Harrison, Nolan (Kambwala 62), Aljofree, Murray, Bennett, Shoretire, Collyer, Hansen-Aaroen (Huddlestone 73), Mejia, Hugill, Ennis (Mather 46)

Unused subs: Wooster, Curley

Manchester United u21s rounded out their EFL Trophy campaign on Tuesday night as they fell to Salford City late on to exit the competition. Here are our player ratings for the match.

Read the detailed match report of all the action here.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Elyh Harrison – 6 – Saved the easy shots and wasn’t really at fault for any of the goals conceded, although could have possibly got a better dive on Salford’s second goal. As composed as ever with passing the ball out from the back.

James Nolan – 6 – Involved in some good passing down the wing but was loose with possession too often. Showed good maturity under pressure with a clever ability to draw a foul though.

Willy Kambwala – 5 – A mixed bag of a performance, he swept up with a couple of very important interceptions but you can’t look past his involvement in Salford’s first two goals. Backed off far too much allowing them to run unopposed to the edge of the box twice in the span of five minutes and he was punished both times.

Rhys Bennett – 7.5 – Another good performance from Bennett, he was particularly good on the ball when working out of the press. Showed a good range of passing and dribbling to kickstart attacks. Defensively he was also solid with a number of good interceptions and clearances. Conceded the penalty for Salford’s winner but it looked harsh and was just normal contact expected when challenging for a cross.

Sam Murray – 6.5 – Nothing spectacular but provided an outlet down the left wing and largely kept it simple.

Toby Collyer – 6.5 – Kept the ball ticking over in midfield and did well breaking up play with six tackles, but his errant pass did lead to one of Salford’s goals.

Dan Gore – 7.5 – Central to United’s play going forward which was sensational at times. Picked out forward and incisive passes while rarely ever losing possession and it seemed the only way to stop him was by fouling him. Could have also arguably earned a penalty but for Shoretire immediately finishing the move with a goal.

Kobbie Mainoo – 8 – Started off the match with a great through ball and then another line breaking pass from deep which looked to set him apart from the rest. Ended up with two assists and could have possibly earned a penalty. Only possible criticism was that he spent too many spells in peripheral wide areas which lessened his impact.

Omari Forson – 8 – A very silky performance, he was exceptional in the tight central areas outside Salford’s box in keeping possession and evading tackles. Was rewarded with a goal for his efforts with the help of a deflection.

Joe Hugill – 5 – Just didn’t get involved and was largely a non-entity, not managing to get a single shot off in 90 minutes.

Shola Shoretire – 8.5 – Two goals and a fabulous performance all around, he was incisive in the opposition box and involved in much of United’s good play. Also worked hard going backwards and made a number of tackles.

Substitutes

Ethan Ennis – 6 – Provided energy and directness on the wing after his introduction although the final quality was missing. Conceded the first penalty with a handball but it is harsh to blame him for it.

Tom Huddlestone – N/A – Came on in the dying stages and didn’t make much of an impression.

Mateo Mejia – N/A – Not on for long enough.

Manchester United u21s took on Salford City in their final group stage match of the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night with a win required to have any chance of advancing.

The home side continued some familiar faces for United youth followers with former u21s manager Neil Wood leading the charge for the Class of 92 club and on the pitch Kelly N’Mai and Jacob Lara have both appeared in the red of United in the past year on trials.

Both sides exchanged corners early on but it was United who took advantage when Willy Kambwala’s header was spilled, allowing Kobbie Mainoo to flick to Shola Shoretire to dispatch through the crowd to give United an early lead.

United were producing some enigmatic football in the middle of the park which Salford couldn’t keep up with, drawing a number of fouls at the edge of the box but United could not capitalise.

In the 24th minute, Salford hit on the counter against the run of play to level the score with Willy Kambwala backing off from Conor McAleny until the forward struck from 25 yards into the bottom right corner.

Just three minutes later and it was an episode of deja vu. A sloppy pass from Toby Collyer in the midfield kickstarted the counter for Salford and again Kambwala was left jockeying too far back, allowing a clear run for Matty Lund to the edge of the box to place into the bottom right corner again to give Salford the lead.

United continued to dominate possession for the rest of the half but were unable to equalise before the break.

The young Reds came out after the restart on fire though and pulled it level within a minute. Fabulous hold up play from Mainoo at the edge of the box allowed the midfielder to turn and lay off to Omari Forson who’s shot was deflected past the keeper.

A minute later, Mainoo weaved through the Salford backline before being taken down in the box but his protests were waved away as Shoretire’s low placed effort was parried out of danger by the Salford keeper.

United then retook the lead in the 51st minute as Dan Gore was taken out while taking the ball on the turn inside the box but it didn’t matter as Shoretire was on hand to strike home with his weaker foot.

United continued to dominate proceedings into the closing stages with Gore, Mainoo, Shoretire, and Forson combining throughout with fluid attractive football but they could not extend their lead.

The youngsters would rue their lack of killer instinct in the 86th minute, when Salford were awarded a penalty after a cross cannoned off the hand of Ethan Ennis. Lund dispatched to draw it all level.

Into the dying minutes of injury time, Salford were awarded another soft penalty when Rhys Bennett challenged for a cross in the centre of the box and was adjudged to have fouled the Salford attacker. Lund stepped up to score again to complete his hattrick and earn the home side a 4-3 win.

A disappointing end to what was a fabulous night of football, unfortunately the result sees United crash out of the EFL Trophy at the group stage.

United: Harrison, Nolan, Kambwala, Bennett, Murray (Mejia 88), Collyer (Ennis 67), Gore, Mainoo, Forson (Huddlestone 82), Hugill, Shoretire

Manchester United u21s travelled to take on Blackburn Rovers on Saturday morning as they looked to rebound from their heavy defeat in the EFL Trophy during the week.

United took an early lead just after the 10th minute when Shola Shoretire played the ball down the right channel for Mateo Mejia to race in behind his man and fire low across the box which the Blackburn skipper, Patrick Gamble, could only turn into his own goal.

A loose pass from the Blackburn keeper then almost opened the chance for Dan Gore to add to United’s lead but the midfielder, who enjoyed a senior debut just days ago, rattled the crossbar from 20 yards out.

United’s high press was proving fruitful as yet again the Blackburn keeper’s clearance went straight to United as Omari Forson picked up the wayward ball and played it infield, which ended in Shoretire being denied by the woodwork as well.

Blackburn equalised in the 36th minute with a beautifully taken goal chipped over the outrushing Radek Vitek and into the top corner.

But it wasn’t level for long, Gore’s ball into the corner was picked up by Jack Kingdon, who laid back to Shoretire to race into the box and finish into the bottom corner.

It looked like United would hold the lead into the break but in the dying seconds and easy cross to claim for Vitek slipped out of the Czech keeper’s hands and fell to Tom Atcheson for an easy goal to make it 2-2 at the half.

Into the second half, Gore continued to show why he has impressed Erik ten Hag with a sensational goal, running through midfield before expertly dodging a challenge in the box and hitting the back of the net.

United added a fourth in the 75th minute, Ethan Williams’ corner was cleared to the edge of the area for Forson to run onto and thunder an unstoppable strike past the keeper.

United’s impressive performance was rounded off by Joe Hugill dispatching from the spot after Mateo Mejia was taken down in the box.

A good result to bounce back after the 8-1 defeat to Bolton Wanderers, but another two goals conceded brings United to 17 goals against after just six league matches and u21s development phase coach David Hughes believes there are many lessons to be learnt.

“Lots of learning, we had some really good positives in the first half hour and last half an hour of the game. There was a little bit, 15 minutes before half time and 15 minutes after where we needed to be a little more resolute and difficult to play against,” he said.

United: Vitek, Kingdon, Aljofree, Bennett (Kambwala 63), Murray (Williams 63), Oyedele (Collyer 63), Gore, Mejia, Shoretire (Scanlon 84), Forson, Hugill

Manchester United u21s were in action on Sunday before the first team with the young reds travelling north to Sunderland.

A week after a remarkable 10-1 victory over Stoke City, United’s u21s looked set for another goal show when Joe Hugill opened the scoring in the first minute against his former club.

United doubled the lead in the 15th minute after winning possession high up the pitch, Mateo Mejia passed to Shola Shoretire to finish past former United keeper Nathan Bishop.

Another mishap at the back for Sunderland gifted Hugill his second of the match when he pounced on a short pass back before dinking the ball over the keeper to make it 0-3 in the 34th minute.

Seconds before the half time whistle, United countered with Omari Forson who played through Shoretire to round past Bishop and slot into the net to give United a four goal lead going into the break.

The second half started when the first left off with Forson cutting in from the right and firing low from the edge of the box to make it five.

With the match expectedly out of reach, Sunderland didn’t give up and pulled one back through a long-range effort that rebounded straight to the feet of Harry Gardiner who was able to finish past Elyh Harrison.

Just two minutes later, Sunderland scored another when Harrison Jones sent a spectacular effort flying into the top corner from the edge of the box.

United had lost their head allowing for Sunderland to score a third in less than five minutes. Sunderland got to the by-line and crossed low for Michael Spellman to apply the finish.

Travis Binnion looked to the bench to turn the tide including a forced change in goal with Harrison exiting for Dermot Mee.

The new keeper couldn’t keep the door closed though as Sunderland added another in the 72nd minute. A one touch finish from Tom Chiabi outside the box rocketed into the top corner.

Holding onto the remaining one goal lead until the 9th minute of injury time, United’s youngsters couldn’t make it to the whistle and with the last kick of the game Sunderland equalised. Jewison Bennette picked up the ball on the right side and cut in onto his left foot and before firing home.

Letting a five goal lead slip was certain to have left manager Travis Binnion angry and with three weeks until the next match, there will be plenty of time to go over it on the training ground.

United: Harrison (Mee 64), Ogunneye, Aljofree, Kambwala, Nolan, Oyedele, Hansen-Aaroen, Forson (Williams 68), Mejia, Shoretire (Jackson 78), Hugill

Apart from permanent incomings and outgoings, Manchester United are also expected to sign off on a number of loan exits for their highly-rated academy graduates.

The Peoples Person has already written about Charlie McNeill’s temporary exit and now Shola Shoretire could be set to follow suit.

As per The Manchester Evening News, the 19-year-old is expected to depart before the transfer deadline after a ton of Championship clubs expressed their interest.

Shola Shoretire loan interest

“Manchester United youngster Shola Shoretire could leave on loan before the transfer deadline if a good opportunity can be found.

“The Manchester Evening News understands Shoretire has received interest from Championship clubs and abroad and that he could leave on a temporary deal on deadline day if the right offer is made for the player.”

Prospective clubs have been asked to provide their development plans for the 19-year-old and only after the Red Devils are satisfied will they agree to loan out Shoretire.

Last season, the England U19 international went out on a six-month loan to League One outfit Bolton Wanderers in January, where he impressed and is now yearning for more minutes at a more competitive level.

In 16 appearances, he scored once, provided two assists, and showed he was ready for the step up in terms of quality, hence the plan to send him to the Championship.

Shoretire highly-regarded at United

Shoretire had made his United first-team debut under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when he came on against Newcastle United back in February 2021.

He then proceeded to break the long-standing record of Norman Whiteside when he made his European debut against Real Sociedad in the Europa League at the age of 17 years and 23 days, surpassing the previous record by 108 days.

A lot was expected from the youngster back then but he seems to have stagnated a bit in the last couple of years, especially as he has outgrown academy and reserve football.

A loan move to a Championship side, which preferably likes to play with the ball, would be the ideal next step for Shoretire.

Manchester United enjoyed a season of progress under new manager Erik ten Hag and the boss will be hoping for another successful campaign this time around.

Ten Hag is trying to mould the squad in his own image and will be adding players to the squad in the summer that further suit his philosophy.

The United manager has a clear plan for the club and he will not be daunted before promoting another academy graduate.

Alejandro Garnacho broke through under Ten Hag in the last campaign and the Dutchman also gave chances to Kobbie Mainoo and will have his eye on the next starlet emerging from the academy.

A lot of hopes are pinned on versatile attacker Shola Shoretire who was loaned to League One side Bolton Wanderers in January with the view of providing first-team exposure.

The 19-year-old played 16 times for Bolton but only managed one goal against Bristol Rovers.

Shoretire did help Bolton secure a playoff place in League One but their promotion dreams were dashed by Barnsley, who proved too much for Ian Evatt’s side over two legs of the semi-final.

Despite his lack of goals, Shoretire left a good impression on the Bolton boss who described the forward as “a young player with an immense amount of talent” and believes the teenager is going to have “a really good future” in football.

The young forward will return to United for pre-season but it’s highly likely he will be sent on loan again next season to continue his development.

Shoretire is highly thought of at Old Trafford and Ten Hag will be hoping another season of first team football will help him eventually make the breakthrough for the United first-team.

The talented forward has been at United since he was nine and made history when he became the youngest player to represent the club in European competition back in February 2021 coming off the bench against Real Sociedad.

The England U-19 international has made five appearances for the United senior team, with former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer giving him his first chance.

The end of the season is fast approaching across the English footballing pyramid, with teams set to learn their fate in the coming weeks.

Manchester United have work to do to ensure they finish in the top four of the Premier League, as well as the small matter of the FA Cup final against Manchester City in June.

As reported by manutd.com, Erik ten Hag will be fully focused on ensuring his side finish the season as strong as possible but will also have half an eye on his loan players further down the leagues.

With the regular league season finished in the Championship, League One and Two, United have vested interest in the lower league playoffs.

Amad Diallo led Sunderland’s late playoff charge in the Championship, playing a starring role in Tony Mowbray’s side pinching the last spot to set up a semi-final against Luton Town.

Mowbray will be hoping Amad can continue his fine form this season to shoot The Black Cats back to the big time.

Amad has enjoyed an outstanding loan spell at Sunderland and helping them back to the Premier League would be a fitting sign-off before he returns to Old Trafford.

Should Sunderland get past Luton, they will run into either Middlesbrough or Coventry City, managed by former Reds, Michael Carrick and Mark Robins respectively.

Carrick took over the reins at Boro in October, with the club in the relegation zone but has turned their fortunes around and catapulted them up the Championship table.

In League One, Bolton Wanderers face a playoff semi-final against Barnsley, who finished five points above them in the table.

United youngster Shola Shoretire is currently on loan at Bolton and is hitting form at the right time, having scored his first professional goal at the weekend against Bristol Rovers.

Former Red Darren Ferguson is in the other League One semi, hoping to cause an upset as his Peterborough side take on Sheffield Wednesday for the right to play at Wembley.

United’s interest in the League Two race firstly comes in the shape of former under 21s boss Neil Wood, who leads Salford City into their semi-final against Stockport.

United legend Mark Hughes may be lying in wait for Salford in the final, with Hughes currently in charge at Bradford City who face Carlisle in their playoff semi.

Good luck to all the current and former Reds in their respective season-defining next few weeks.

Shola Shoretire put in a fantastic performance for League One side Bolton Wanderers yesterday as they trounced Peterborough 5-0 to go fifth in the table.

The Manchester United loanee scored a top score of nine points in The Bolton News’ player ratings, with the outlet purring that the Posh “didn’t know how to handle him.”

As per Statman Dave, Shoretire completed 100% of his dribbles successfully and achieved 93% pass accuracy. He won 9/12 ground duels and 6 fouls.

The 19 year old also won two penalties and made one key pass.

The Bolton News reported that “Shoretire had been practically strangled against Cheltenham, whose deep lying defence showed little inclination to engage.

“In this sort of chaotic environment, though, he could pick his moments to drop deep into space around the penalty box, and those to run at defenders.

“On one of the latter occasions, he was tripped by Nathan Thompson and referee Lee Swabey gave a 42nd minute penalty.”

Shoretire’s performances so far at Bolton have been impressive, especially given the fact that it is his first loan spell away from the United academy.

Joining a team jostling for promotion in tough League One half way through the season is quite a challenge, having just played a handful of U21 games for United previously this season.

Shoretire’s talent has been evident from a young age but Trotters’ boss Ian Evatt took a gamble on whether the young star would be physically robust enough to stand up to the intensity of league football at this stage.

If yesterday’s unplayable performance is anything to go by, Evatt’s faith is going to be amply rewarded.

Manchester United have had a very quiet January window, with only the loan signings of Wout Weghorst and Jack Butland coming through the door at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils do not expect too much in terms of incoming activity before the transfer deadline, but there may yet be a number of players on their way out.

The youthful trio of Shola Shoretire, Charlie McNeill and Charlie Savage have already completed temporary moves to lower-division sides, with Shoretire moving to Bolton Wanderers, McNeill to Newport County, and Savage joining Forest Green.

Although much of the outgoings concern youth prospects, as The Peoples Person recently reported Harry Maguire may also be on the move.

Inter Milan are supposedly keen on taking the United skipper to Italy on a loan deal, after being rebuffed earlier during multiple enquiries for Maguire’s long time partner at the back, Swedish captain Victor Lindelof .

Now, according to The Sun, another United centre-back, Di’Shon Bernard, is headed for the exit-door, as Portsmouth emerge victorious in the fight for his signature.

Bernard made his senior debut for Manchester United in a Europa League fixture during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign at Old Trafford, starting in a 2-1 loss against Kazakhstani champions Astana on 28 November 2019.

It was his unfortunate own goal that condemned United to defeat that night, and the youngster has never managed another senior appearance for the Red Devils.

He has since had impressive stints on loan at Salford City and Hull City in successive seasons, where he showed glimpses of his defensive prowess, but it wasn’t enough to convince Erik ten Hag that he has a place in the United first-team, at this present moment.

Bernard is best suited to playing in a centre-back role, but he can deputise at right-back as well.

Despite playing in the Championship with the Tigers last season, his willingness to drop another level to league one, shows how eager he is to get playing time.

The 22-year-old will be keenly aware that time is quickly running out for him to stake a claim for a first team place at United, but if he can impress at Pompey, he could yet force his way into Erik ten Hag’s plans.
