Manchester United academy product Alejandro Garnacho was playing for the U18s in the FA Youth Cup when the 2021/22 season ended.

At the end of the 2022/23 season, there is a genuine debate about whether he could have been given the famous No 7 shirt at United.

“Doing a Garnacho”, therefore, is when a youth player breaks out in a big and unexpected way, instantly becoming one of the more important players in the team.

Marcus Rashford “did a Garnacho” before the Argentine was even at the club, and now there are three players who – if things break right – could tread the same path as Rashford and Garnacho.

The preseason will be crucial for them, and then, an opening is needed in the first team. From there, just like the two players mentioned above, they will need to make an instant impact to solidify their place.

Nobody said it was easy, but if anyone is capable of it, it is these three players…

Kobbie Mainoo

Kobbie Mainoo is arguably rated even higher than Rashford and Garnacho were in their academy days. The 17-year-old has already been a part of a few matchday squads last season.

At his best, Mainoo has the potential physicality of Paul Pogba with the calmness and ball circulations skills of Michael Carrick.

High praise indeed, but that’s the kind of ceiling Mainoo has shown in his fledgling career so far.

Midfield is now a tough position to break into at United. Mason Mount’s arrival means even a player with the pedigree of Christian Eriksen is likely to come off the bench.

However, in a long and arduous season, a path could open up for Mainoo, particularly with other potential departures on the horizon.

The first step would be to impress in preseason and convince Erik ten Hag that he does not need a loan move. From there, it is all about biding his time until an opening presents itself.

The manager has already shown that he is not afraid of putting in young players if they show potential and willingness to learn.

Breaking into a United midfield will not be easy, but with a change of the guard coming, Mainoo may never have a better chance to do it.

Alvaro Fernandez

Fernandez belongs to the elite “Pre-Brexit” class of acquisitions which United made quickly as buying foreign players under the age of 18 was outlawed by Brexit.

Along with Marc Jurado, Willy Kambwala, Hannibal Mejbri, and a certain Alejandro Garnacho, the left back was part of a crop that came with huge promise.

One has already broken through, Fernandez is best placed to be the next.

A loan to the Championship is a baptism of fire for any youngster, especially for non-British ones. Fernandez, however, went to Preston, became their Young Player of the Year winner, and was a fan-favourite by the end.

The flying wingback showed all the qualities Ten Hag looks for in a defender. He is confident going forwards, can pick out a pass as per the spaces on the pitch, and his defensive work has come on leaps and bounds on loan.

With Luke Shaw tried in the heart of defence many times last season, and United looking increasingly unlikely to buy a new centre-back, a door could open for Fernandez.

Tyrell Malacia did an admirable job covering for Shaw last year but Fernandez could be an elite in-house solution for the next decade and beyond in a position that is difficult to sort in the transfer market.

Charlie McNeill

This is the wild card choice. Excitement around McNeill was at fever pitch when he scored 24 goals in 21 games for United U18s in the 2020/21 season.

However, since then, some dry spells have followed for the reserve team in Premier League 2.

Last year he went on loan to Newport County for his first senior football experience but it yielded only two goals in 20 appearances.

Clearly, his somewhat one-dimensional play is hindering his ability to make the final jump.

Right now, McNeill is a good finisher but not much else. Fortunately for him, that is the one thing hardest to teach and he is already very good at it.

Furthermore, in what would be a nightmare scenario, United might end the current window without any striking reinforcements.

The path would then become clear for McNeill.

Rashford got his debut when Anthony Martial was injured, and his backup Will Keane also picked up a knock in training. Even Rashford wasn’t particularly prolific in his academy days.

McNeill can look up to his example. A goal or two in the first few appearances can change the trajectory of a player’s career and those initial steps are a realistic proposition for a United side that looks desperately short in the striking department.

When Brexit was just about to come into effect, Manchester United went on a shopping spree of Europe’s finest young talents as a ban on buying foreign players under the age of 18 was forthcoming.

In came prospects like Hannibal Mejbri, Alejandro Garnacho, Marc Jurado, and Willy Kambwala among others as the youth squad was injected with fresh energy.

So far, the hit rate on these talents has been remarkably high. Hannibal is already knocking on the first-team door while Garnacho has blasted straight through it.

The next to follow him should be left-back Alvaro Fernandez.

The flying full-back, signed from Real Madrid, spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Preston North End. Before that, he was impressing tremendously in the U23s side at Old Trafford.

He continued his fine form in senior football as well as he went on to win the Preston supporters’ Young Player of the Season award.

He made 42 appearances in a remarkable introduction to senior football, especially for a young foreigner in a league as difficult to navigate as the Championship.

Attacking thrust was never a problem with Fernandez. However, his improvement in defensive discipline was a pleasant surprise.

He regularly used his breakneck recovery speed to cover the whole flank as he was found tackling in his box one moment and marauding into the opposition’s the next.

The Spaniard’s end product is already developed beyond his young age. Erik ten Hag likes his fullbacks to be attack-minded and comfortable with the ball. Those bits are Fernandez’s strengths with the potential to be elite at them.

With the manager having to play Diogo Dalot on the left many times due to an unforgiving schedule last season, the opportunity is ripe for Alvaro Fernandez to come in and make a claim for a senior spot.

His case is not like that of Amad, where the senior team is stocked with many options in his position. Fullback is an area where United could do with reinforcements and if that comes from within, there’s nothing better.

Breaking through into the first team needs a combination of talent, hard work, and then luck. Fernandez already has the first two down pat. Now he just needs to be given a chance in the team that he can seize with both hands.

As luck would have it, it could come soon due to United’s limited fullback options. The ingredients are all there for a breakout season. Expect to see him a lot in the pre-season as Ten Hag assesses his qualities. Then it is up to Fernandez to impress the manager and not look back.

His time has come and he is ready, now he just needs to prove that he belongs. Another loan should be out of the question. There’s no need to spend mindlessly when the solution is right at home.

Manchester United secured their place in the final of the FA Cup against arch-rivals Manchester City after overcoming Brighton at Wembley on Sunday.

With the Carabao Cup in the bag and the chance to add a top-four finish and the FA Cup, manager Erik ten Hag will be relatively pleased with the progress made by the team in such a short span of time.

However, the summer will be a very important period for the club with the Dutch manager deciding about incomings, outgoings and which academy youngster to reintegrate into the first-team squad.

Alvaro Fernandez has enjoyed a fruitful season in the Championship

So far, the most obvious candidate seems to be Amad Diallo who has shone for Sunderland. But Alvaro Fernandez of Preston North End will also argue about his impact in the Championship.

The Spaniard has represented the Lilywhites 40 times across all competitions this season and has garnered a total of six assists along the way.

The Championship outfit still have an outside chance of qualifying for the playoffs. They are 10th in the table, two points behind the race for the play-offs.

“It’s been a good season for me – I have taken the experience that I wanted right at the beginning, with 39 (now 40) appearances in total. It’s been the perfect season for me, I think.” Fernandez told LancsLive.

Whatever happens from now until the end of the season, fans at the Deepdale Stadium will be more than happy to welcome back the 20-year-old for another temporary spell.

But United might have other plans in mind. Luke Shaw seems to be the preferred option as left-back but if he is made to play as an auxiliary centre-back, a reserve spot might open up.

Fernandez hoping to break into United team next season

Tyrell Malacia has still not fully convinced and if either of Victor Lindelof or Harry Maguire move on in the summer, Shaw might be required at the heart of defence more often.

“I think I will go to speak with them in one or two weeks. They will say that I need to come back in pre-season, to Manchester United – then we will speak again, after training, to see what happens and what they want.

“The world is crazy. You never know in football. Erik ten Hag, he has to choose,” the youngster revealed.

Add the fact that the former Real Madrid youngster has also played further forward as a left winger and even in midfield, Ten Hag might have got a versatile option he can use ahead if next season.

Manchester United youngster Alvaro Fernandez has revealed that it is his dream to one day feature for the Red Devils in the Premier League.

Fernandez, who is currently out on loan with Preston North End, spoke to club media and outlined his ambition to represent the United senior team.

The Spaniard, who arrived at Old Trafford from Real Madrid in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic said, “It was always a dream of mine to play in the Premier League and Manchester United is a big team in the Premier League and across the world.”

“It was always a challenge and a dream to play there and that’s why I’m fighting to be there.”

The 20-year-old shed light on his time so far at Deepdale under the stewardship of Ryan Lowe.

As per Fernandez, he is learning a lot in the Championship and his wish is to continue playing as many games as possible.

The player claimed that he enjoys the hectic schedule as it leaves little time for feeling sorry for oneself in the event of a disappointing result.

Fernandez remarked that PNE’s primary objective this season is to make it to the play-offs and he will do everything in his power to realize this goal.

The full-back narrated just how hard he found it to adapt to life in Manchester, where he now feels firmly at home.

“At the beginning, when I came here to England, I was in digs with an English family. It was very good from them, that they helped me start to speak English. You always have to learn something new, but now I can speak it better!”

“The first year I could only go back at Christmas and summer, so it was hard to come to a new place and a new culture, with a new football team as well. It was hard, but the people have always been good to me in England.”

Fernandez has made 34 appearances for PNE this season and has on more than one occasion been singled out for praise by Lowe.

During this time, he has registered four assists – a relatively decent output. Hopefully, his time in the Championship acts as a launchpad for a senior United debut.

Manchester United were recently crowned as Carabao Cup champions and are still alive in both the FA Cup and Europa League while also fighting in the Premier League.

The whole club seems to have come back on track under Erik ten Hag. Not only in terms of first-team stars but they have also excelled in sending out young stars on loan.

United’s recent track-record when it comes to finding the right loan club has not always been top-notch but this season, it has so far produced brilliant results.

Loan system working

In the Championship, three players — Amad Diallo at Sunderland, Hannibal Mejbri at Birmingham and Alvaro Fernandez at Preston — are all shining.

United are currently well-stocked in terms of left-backs with Luke Shaw in the form of his life while Tyrell Malacia has been superb when called upon.

But it was interesting to hear from the young Spaniard that United have long-term plans for him and even said no to loan offers with the obligation to buy from several Spanish sides.

“I had good options for the Championship and some other league, but they recommended me to come here. Some came from Spain, but United were firm. There were purchase options and they were not willing,” the 19-year-old told AS.

The former Real Madrid academy star has been a mainstay in Ryan Lowe’s side and has played as an orthodox left-back as well as higher up the pitch as a left winger and left wing-back.

United have plans for Alvaro

And all these different experiences will aid him as he seeks to make a mark for the senior Red Devils team.

“In the end you arrive at a new club, you have to adapt. But I knew they were playing 3-5-2. I feel good, I am as if it were my position. I attack, which is what I like, I am a deep winger. Very good.”

Real wanted to keep a hold of him but in the end, the lure of United proved too strong to resist. That has not always been the case with the opposite holding true in so many cases in the past.

It is refreshing to hear that the young defender feels loved at United and wants to prove himself in England. He also revealed that he is in constant touch with Darren Fletcher and the club keep tabs on his progress.

“What I wanted was to grow in football and United came up with an incredible proposal for the future. Thank God I’m now on loan for a second, with a United first-team record. Luckily it wasn’t bad for me.”

Manchester United are “over the moon” with the progress of Alvaro Fernandez on loan according to Preston North End’s manager, Ryan Lowe.

The young Spaniard has made 28 appearances for the Championship club since making the temporary move in the summer.

After spending a short spell out of the side, Fernandez has returned to the starting XI for the past two fixtures which have seen Preston draw with Luton and Hull City.

Impressing upon his return to the side, the left back earned the highest rating in both matches from LancsLive.

Vs Luton “7 – On front foot from the start and brought more dynamism to the performance. Provided more of a threat and made a key block to keep out Clark in the first half. Played a different role after the red card, which was good to see.

Vs Hull City “7 – Quiet in the first half but grew into the game and dribbled past defenders more in the second. Out on his feet by the end but stuck to his task defensively.

Preston’s manager Ryan Lowe has also grown a fondness of the 19 year old quipping “my Spanish is getting better anyway, because he cannot understand the scouse. But look, Alvaro is a good player isn’t he?”

After a red card for Ben Whiteman against Luton, Fernandez was thrusted into a central midfield role for the remainder of the match and took to it like a duck to water.

Lowe said after that match “when we moved him inside, he was getting the ball on the left, coming inside and causing them real problems. I thought he caused them problems in the first half – with the ball he put in, just wide of Troy. It was a great jump to take the ball and that’s what he has got. He’s been excellent when he’s played and his attitude and application has to stay the same, to keep performing at that level.”

Featuring regularly throughout the season, the loan spell is impressing United according to Lowe who added “in terms of the games he’s played for us and the minutes he’s played for us, I know Man United are absolutely over the moon with it.”

Lowe is keen to keep the youngster grounded though and is happy with the running battle between Fernandez and fellow United academy graduate, Robbie Brady, for the left wing-back role.

“Because he is a good player, but he’s still young, naïve and we still have to tactically tell him what to do and what not to do. Even at the end there, he’s asking if he should jump or not. His awareness, defending, has got a lot better and it’s a learning process for Alvaro. When he plays and performs the way he can, he’s a very good player. The rotation we have, with him and Robbie – we have a youngster who can be on the front foot and then a bit more experience defensively and offensively. So, it’s a good battle between the two of them and we feel either can do the job required when picked.”

Alvaro Fernandez is making steady progress plying his trade in the Championship this season with Preston North End.

Fernandez, 19, played 88 minutes in yesterday’s FA Cup fixture which saw Preston defeat Huddersfield Town.

LancsLive described the teenager’s proactive performance:

“On the front foot all game, looking to make things happen. Delivered low crosses into dangerous areas, even if the end product wasn’t always there. A bit of miscommunication with [Freddie] Woodman in the build-up to the [Huddersfield] Town goal.”

This review is almost quintessential for a Premier League youngster developing in the Championship: impressive and determined, but liable to unforced errors and tactical mishaps.

Fernandez has had a fruitful time learning about and experiencing professional football in a tough league – he’s made 20 appearances so far in the Championship out of a possible 26 and has quickly become a mainstay in Preston’s team.

Preston have drawn Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth round of the FA Cup following yesterday afternoon’s victory. Playing against a top Premier League side should encourage Fernandez to impress the watchful eyes of Erik ten Hag’s staff.

The Spanish left-back, who signed for United from Real Madrid in 2020, has 18 months left on his current deal, but United hold the option to extend his contract by one further year.

With such, the youngster’s goal is to keep impressing at Preston in order to instate himself into United’s first team squad.

Speaking to Relevo about his desires for the near future, Fernandez said: “My goal is to return to Manchester United and earn a place in the first team,

“I speak enough with Darren Fletcher, who is involved in the thinking of the first team.”

Indeed, Fernandez has been fortunate with his man-management at Preston.

Head coach Ryan Lowe has been shrewd with his use of the Spanish teenager, taking him out of the starting eleven during November when he felt Fernandez’s mentality was beginning to drop.

“He lost a bit of focus a couple of weeks ago, I must say, when he was out of the team,” Lowe explained to LancsLive after Fernandez regained his place in December, “He knew that, so we sat him down, had a chat and spoke to Man United over one or two things.

“He loves it here, the kid, doesn’t he?

“Coming across the pitch and losing the ball; his recovery runs have got to be sprints. But, he is a youngster who has got fantastic talent.

“We still have to coach him and tell him that tactically he’s got to be on it.”

With coaches aware of the left-back’s superior raw talent and of the importance of mentality to make it at United, Fernandez can be expected to feature prominently in the Championship whilst learning and developing in the physical, tactical, and mental aspects of the game.

Manchester United youngster Alvaro Fernandez has praised the club for their handling of him so far in comparison to Real Madrid.

Fernandez, who is currently on loan at Preston North End in the championship, described his delight at being at Old Trafford and declared his target of returning to United in the summer and contesting for a first-team spot.

The Spaniard told Relevo, “At Real Madrid, I was just another player; at Manchester United they made me feel special. You arrive here and they already treat you like a footballer.”

“At Real Madrid, we were academy players. We trained in the gym, we had breakfast and ate at the facilities… And in Carrington, you go to have breakfast and at the table next to you are De Gea and Fred.”

“At Real Madrid, to reach Castilla there are 800,000 players ahead. I was a first-year youth player. At United, two months later I was already in the subsidiary. It’s always nice to go back to where you started, but for now, I’m very good at Manchester United.”

Fernandez explained that United’s sporting plan is what appealed to him the most. United presented him with a clear plan and demonstration for his future.

On his Preston loan spell, the defender remarked that while he enjoys competing with professionals and making a name for himself, it’s “outrageous” that they play every three or so days.

He added that his decision to go out on loan was prompted by Tyrell Malacia’s arrival. There was Luke Shaw, Alex Telles and then Malacia. He instantly knew that his opportunities would be limited.

Interestingly, Fernandez said that United and Preston got into an agreement that he would primarily play as a winger. The full-back has played there on a number of occasions. Fernandez said that in future he sees himself as a winger rather than a left-back.

The 19-year-old gave his thoughts on United teammate Alejandro Garnacho. He branded Garnacho as “daring.”

Fernandez opined that Garnacho has been given the opportunity to prove himself and has taken the chance with both hands. Fernandez mentioned that Garnacho, who he used to secretly meet during lockdown, was like family to him alongside his “father”, Juan Mata.

Fernandez said he’s also close to De Gea and Darren Fletcher, who speaks to him regularly.

Some of Manchester United’s loanees were in action for their sides over the weekend in the Championship, La Liga and even the Premier League.

Some of these stars that left Old Trafford in search of first-team minutes were exemplary and made extremely valuable contributions to their temporary employers’ causes.

Dean Henderson for instance, was incredible, making several heroic saves to help Nottingham Forest earn a hard-fought 1-0 win against Liverpool.

Amad Diallo impressed for The Black Cats, capping off an impressive outing with a first goal for Sunderland.

This is how United’s other loanees performed.

Alex Telles

Brazilian defender Telles featured for Sevilla in a 3-1 defeat against La Liga champions Real Madrid.

Telles registered one block, one interception and one tackle in the showtime game.

The 29-year-old had 44 touches of the ball and a decent 80.6% pass accuracy.

Telles failed to complete a single long ball or any cross and was unable to show his attacking dynamism against Real Madrid’s far superior galacticos.

He won two out of the three ground duels he went into and completed the single dribble attempt he had.

Telles, in what was a mixed performance lost possession nine times and had two of his shots at goal blocked.

Ethan Galbraith

Galbraith played for 57 minutes for Salford City in a 2-0 downing against Stockport County.

The youngster touched the ball 21 times and out of the passes he had to his name, including one key pass, had a 78.6% pass accuracy.

Galbraith completed 1/2 long balls and lost possession eight times.

An astonishing element of the 21-year-old’s came in the form of his duels, He won 0 out of his five ground duels but won four out of five of his aerial ones.

Finally, the midfielder committed two fouls for Salford and was dribbled past only once.

Ethan Laird

Laird appeared again for QPR in a 2-1 win against Wigan – a result that ensured they remain top of the Championship table.

Laird made one clearance, one interception, one key pass and one tackle.

The right-back had 38 touches of the ball and an astonishing 90% pass accuracy for Micheal Beale’s side.

He successfully delivered one out of the two long balls he looked to ping to his teammates.

Laird won 2/4 ground duels and 1/3 aerial duels. He was fouled once and registered a single shot that was off-target.

The academy graduate is one who seems to be relishing his spell out on loan, and is firmly taking advantage of the opportunity.

Alvaro Fernandez

Alvaro Fernandez participated for Preston North End in a 4-2 goal-laden thrashing at the hands of Michael Appleton’s Blackpool in the Lancashire derby.

The young left-back had 48 touches of the ball and a 66.7% pass accuracy. There were two key passes.

Out of the six crosses and five long balls he attempted, only two for each metric were successful.

Fernandez was poor defensively, only winning two of his seven duels, both on the ground and in the air.

The Spaniard lost possession an astonishing 18 times.

After a great start to the loan, Fernandez will undoubtedly know that he needs to improve on current form. The positive for him is that he is a guaranteed starter for Preston and is so far enjoying a positive time out on loan.

Some Manchester United loanees were in action today for their sides, in the Premier League, Championship and la Liga.

This is how United’s stars performed while featuring for their temporary employers.

Dean Henderson

Henderson started in goal for Nottingham Forest in a 1-0 loss at the Molineux. Henderson’s side were downed by a Ruben Neves penalty in the 56th minute.

The shot-stopper had a below-par performance, as his stats show.

The 25-year-old only made one save, and a single high claim. He had 38 touches of the ball.

Henderson only completed four out of the 20 long balls he attempted to ping to his teammates, failing to show his distribution and ability on the ball. He registered a 48.4% pass accuracy.

The result has left Forest bottom in the league. The United loanee along with his teammates have a fight on their hands to stay up this season.

Ethan Galbraith

Galbraith, currently out with Salford City, saw his team lose 1-0 against Bradford. The youngster played 90 minutes.

The 21-year-old had 71 touches of the ball and an impressive 88.5% pass accuracy. The Northern Irish footballer made two interceptions in the game.

Gailbraith will be disappointed in his duel numbers. He lost all his ground and aerial duels against Bradford. He also lost possession 12 times and failed to complete a single dribble.

Amad Diallo

Diallo’s struggles with Sunderland seem far from over after he only featured for 45 minutes for the Black Cats.

Sunderland cruised to a 2-1 win against Wigan Athletic.

Diallo registered one shot off-target and only completed one out of the two dribbles he attempted.

The attacker had 27 touches of the ball and an 84.2% pass success rate. In addition to this, the Ivorian completed the one long ball he tried and made two interceptions.

He made one tackle and lost possession six times.

Diallo urgently needs to address his productivity in his loan spell with Sunderland, which is not going according to plan. Should it come to it, the club must make a decision about continuing the loan to avoid stunting his development.

Alvaro Fernandez

United’s young left-back played in defence as Ryan Lowe’s men fell to Stoke City in a 2-0 thrashing.

Fernadez, who has earned himself plaudits for his star showings in Preston colours had 72 touches and a pass accuracy of 69.6% to his name.

The full-back made one clearance and five interceptions in the defeat to Stoke.

The 19-year-old completed 100% of his dribbles, 2/7 long balls and one key pass. He made one clearance and two interceptions.

Still a raw diamond, Fernandez lost the ball 20 times and failed to complete any of the four crosses he tried to put in.

Alex Telles

Brazilian star Telles played for Spanish club Sevilla in a 1-0 win against Mallorca.

Telles played for 67 minutes and had a mere 36 touches, 68.8% possession and just one key pass.

The 29-year-old only completed one cross out of the five he tried, won one ground duel and two in the air, and made a single foul.

He made one clearance, one interception and successfully delivered one long ball.

United’s loanees need to offer more than they have on today’s showing if they harbour hopes of breaking into Erik ten Hag’s plans and earning their big breaks with the first team. As their stats highlight, there is plenty of work to be done.
