Manchester United defender Jonny Evans picked up his MBE award from Prince William at Buckingham Palace on Monday.

According to The Belfast Telegraph, Evans was awarded the MBE for his services to association football in his native Northern Ireland.

Evans made his international debut for the national team in 2006 during a memorable 3-2 win against Spain in September.

Since then, the centre-back has gone on to chalk up an impressive 106 caps.

In that time, he has registered six goals – such has been his importance over the years for North Ireland.

Evans has also had a pretty decent club career. He is currently experiencing his second stint at United, eight years after he departed Old Trafford following a transfer to West Brom.

During his first tenure at the club, Evans won three Premier League titles. He was also part of Leicester City’s FA Cup-winning side in 2021.

So far this season, the 35-year-old has managed eight appearances across all competitions for the Red Devils. At the moment, he is recovering from a thigh injury expected to keep him out of competitive action for a while.

Before picking up the unfortunate setback, Evans was pretty much a guaranteed starter and seemed to even be ahead of Raphael Varane in the pecking order.

He formed a solid partnership at the back with Harry Maguire. Evans now joins Marcus Rashford to become the second United star to receive an MBE.

Evans said, “When I got the letter through the door and it had the Royal seal on the back I was a bit shocked, but it was also amazing.”

“It made me feel very proud, especially when I saw that it was in recognition of my contribution to association football in Northern Ireland.”

“It brought it home that playing more than 100 times for my country, and playing for so long for Northern Ireland, has been so good. I represented everyone in the country and had many good times along the way.”

Jonny Evans has named Manchester United teammate Rasmus Hojlund as the player who has impressed him the most since returning to Old Trafford.

Evans came back to United, eight years after an extremely successful spell at the club.

He left for West Bromwich Albion under Dutch boss Louis van Gaal in 2015. He went on to join Leicester City where he cemented his status as one of the Premier League’s most reliable and capable defenders.

Leicester’s relegation saw him temporarily train with the Red Devils to keep his fitness levels up. He impressed and a decision was made by Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff to keep the North Ireland international for the 2023/24 campaign.

He has made eight appearances across all competitions for United this term.

Currently, Evans is recovering from a thigh injury set to keep him sidelined for a number of weeks.

He spoke to club media and answered multiple questions from supporters all around the world. One fan asked Evans who has gained his admiration the most since coming back.

The veteran defender said, “I’d probably say [Rasmus] Hojlund. I think, for such a young lad, to have his attributes and his personality to be able to come in and, you know, his work-rate too. I think the fans have really taken to him already and he’s going to become a top player.”

Hojlund has of course had a promising start to life at United since his sensational summer move from Atalanta.

The Dane has bagged five goals, all of which have come in the Champions League.

Evans was also asked who are the three toughest opponents he has faced in his extensive career. The 35-year-old revealed, “That’s a tricky one. I would probably say I’ve played against some good strikers over the years and Luis Suarez would have been up there when he was at Liverpool. In the Brendan Rodgers team when they had him and [Daniel] Sturridge up front as well, they were very dangerous. [Didier] Drogba. And I’d probably have to put [Sergio] Aguero up there too.”

He spoke at length about one of the best attributes that characterise his game, his long-ball accuracy and technical ability.

Evans pointed out, “It’s probably something I probably did have to work on. I probably would say my longer passing was something that I was quite aware that I wanted to practise on quite a lot. And, you know, throughout the years, I’ve tried to work on that, with both feet.”

“Like I said earlier, I think for a lot of centre-backs now and you’ve got be able to play with both feet with different ranges of passing. Yeah, long-range patterns are something that I’d say I worked on a lot. So when something like that comes off for an assist, for a goal, you do think oh, all that hard work has paid off.”

On who is the greatest football of all time, Evans pinpointed United icon George Best, who he labelled as “a genius.”

Evans delved into what life was like while coming through the ranks at United.

He divulged that while there was always some pressure to succeed and break through at such a great club, United always offered much-needed support.

No Man United fans likes an international break, but this one is a blessing in disguise as time is desperately needed to get some injured warriors back on the pitch.

Going into the break, the Red Devils’ injury list looked more like a team sheet missing only a goalkeeper, with 10 outfield players unavailable for selection.

However, by the time United kick off against Everton in their next match on November 26th, there is a chance that some of those names will be available for selection again.

This is, as we understand it, the likely return order for the walking wounded.

Everton, 26th November

Aaron Wan-Bissaka missed the Luton game with illness and so should be back.

Amad Diallo could be available. He was last spotted around a week ago in individual training on the grass, which should put team training around now, and full fitness potentially in time for Everton. However, match fitness is another issue and while he could find himself on the bench at Goodison, he is more likely to be eased in with a guest appearance in the U18’s match at Southampton the day before.

Galatasaray, 29th November

Rasmus Hojlund’s thigh strain is thought to be mild and a November return has been mooted. It’s a race against time for the Gala game, with Everton likely to be too soon.

Newcastle United, 2nd December

Tyrell Malacia could just pip Luke Shaw to win the race of the recovering left backs and be available for this one as he returns after summer surgery.

Chelsea, 6th December

Luke Shaw’s return has been touted for the end of November but to our knowledge, there have been no sightings of him back in training yet. This puts him at least 2 weeks away and we think the Chelsea match is realistically the first real chance for the England man.

Liverpool, 17th December

Jonny Evans – a club statement on 10th November said Evans will be out for “a few weeks” with a thigh strain, so this could mean a mid-December return.

Christian Eriksen – on November 13th we were told Eriksen’s knee injury would keep him out for around a month, so a return against Liverpool also looks possible at this stage for the Dane.

Nottingham Forest, 30th December or FA Cup 3rd round, 7th January

Ten Hag has said that Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez, United’s two longest term injuries, will not be back before Christmas. The turn of the year will hopefully see them back on the pitch.

Permanently out

Jadon Sancho is not injured but exiled following a row with Ten Hag and is expected to be sold or loaned out in January. Unless there is a major rapprochement, he is highly unlikely to play again for the club.

Many Manchester United fans will be dreaming of a busy winter window that will kick-start their season domestically and abroad.

However, the major stories from transfer windows are not always about who your clubs brings in, but also on who they decide to cut ties with.

Man United have seven players who have contracts ending in June 2024 and face an uncertain future beyond the end of the current campaign.

The Mirror has drawn attention to the players that could be moving on to new pastures in the summer. One rule of the transfer window is that “any player looking to move from one English team to another as a free agent can only open talks after entering the final month of their previous contract”. However, they can negotiate with foreign clubs from the January previous to the expiry date of their deal.

Safe in this knowledge, let’s take a look to see which of the seven Red Devils may opt for this route.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

The Mirror are downbeat on Wan-Bissaka’s chances of staying at the club. They sum him up as a player who has “veered from dependable player to a lightning rod for fan criticism”. The publication believes it is unlikely he will be offered a new deal. At the start of the season the English fullback seemed a shoe-in for a new contract but things on that front have certainly cooled down of late.

Consequently, The Peoples Person has reported that Ten Hag is interested in bringing in his own right back but many would argue that Wan-Bissaka may provide more effective backup than Diogo Dalot. Additionally, Wan-Bissaka would most certainly be of interest to English teams such as West Ham, so it is improbable that he would lack attractive offers from mid table Premier League clubs if United decide not to renew his deal. Unlikely to go.

Victor Lindelof

The Swede is another name that could depart the club in the summer. The Swedish captain has had plenty of admirers from abroad such as Atletico Madrid, so if he were to desire a new challenge, he would have numerous options as a free agent. However, Lindelof has already played 15 times for the club this season due to the defensive injury crisis and even scored the winning goal against Luton. Nonetheless, Victor may fall down the pecking order as United have been linked to many new central defenders including Jean-Clair Todibo, so the Swedish defender may choose this path, as he is certainly the most sought after of the seven. Likely to go abroad

Antony Martial

The French forward is probably a much clearer case. While Wan-Bissaka and Lindelof remain relatively popular players where you could envision a future back-up role at the club, Martial does not enjoy this reputation among supporters. The Frenchman has been heavily critiqued and has seemingly lost largely everything that made him winner of the Golden Boy award in 2015. Not many English clubs would be willing to sign the attacker but as long as he asked for sensible wages, a list of European clubs would most likely be attracted to him. The Peoples Person recently stated that Inter Milan and PSG are among such teams. Likely to go abroad

Hannibal Mejbri

The 20 year old Tunisian Mejbri is enjoying something of a breakthrough year, having played 5 times already for the Red Devils in this campaign and also having scored a wonder goal against Brighton in September. United do have an option to extend for a year and it is hard to see them not at least taking up this option. The Tunisian is hot-tempered and still has much to learn but it is unlikely that club or player are willing to give up on each other yet. Unlikely to go just yet

Jonny Evans

The Northern Irishman was a surprise signing during the summer but like Lindelof, has had to fill in more than he had probably anticipated due to the injury-ravaged defensive department. Despite admirably deputising, future summer signings at centre back, again like Lindelof, will most likely see Evans leave the club. He could decide to retire as he had contemplated before joining United or play for a lower division English team. Likely to go, but not abroad

Tom Heaton

The 37 year old keeper saw the arrival of two new keepers in the summer and has not played yet this season. The United academy graduate almost joined Luton Town in August but this deal collapsed. Heaton will most definitely leave unless offered some sort of coaching job, but again, he is unlikely to try and secure a deal abroad at this point in his career. Likely to go but not abroad

Alvaro Fernandez

The young Spanish left back will probably have developed the taste for first team football. Last season he played 42 times for Preston in the Championship and has been a regular for Granada in La Liga this year. He is highly rated at United and it is likely the club would love to tie him down to a new contract. However, with Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and possibly even Sergio Reguilon potentially in front of him, he may not have the patience to wait for his chance. Especially as the youngster is from Spain, he could well try and pursue a move to his homeland or elsewhere in the winter. Likely to go abroad

Manchester United’s injury struggles have played a huge role in their underwhelming start to the campaign.

Defensively in particular, Erik ten Hag has been left short and has had to get by with a patched up back four for the majority of the season.

It feels like no player in United’s defensive ranks has been able to get a consistent run of games under their belt, including French centre-back Raphael Varane.

However, in the last couple of weeks he has had to make do with a place on the bench despite being back to fitness.

Ten Hag has cited tactical reasons for picking Harry Maguire and free transfer Jonny Evans in front of Varane in recent games, leaving the World Cup winner out in the cold.

As reported by The Daily Mail, former United defender Rio Ferdinand has spoken on Varane’s situation on his Vibe with FIVE YouTube show.

The decision to start Evans over Varane has raised a few eyebrows and Ferdinand believes Varane must be fit and ready due to his participation in squads, leaving him perplexed as to why he isn’t in the first XI.

“We don’t know. If he’s on the bench, you think he must be fit. In my mind, when you’re on the bench you can play – because you could have to come on in the first minute if someone gets injured.

So if you’re fit enough to travel and get on the bench, you’re fit (to play). So I don’t know what the reason is,” he said.

Varane’s pedigree has left fans echoing Ferdinand’s sentiments on questioning Varane’s current role in Ten Hag’s plans and the former England defender feels he will be shocked to be playing second fiddle to Evans.

“I know that Varane is waking up and his head has got scramblers going off it in, because he’s thinking: ‘I’ve banged out five Champions League medals, I’ve played an integral part in all of those, I’ve played with the best players in the world. I’ve come to Man United and Jonny Evans is starting in front of me!’

“No disrespect (to Evans). Regardless of what Evans has done, there is no way Jonny Evans was ever in Varane’s mind. He would never have been thinking about Jonny Evans,” said Rio.

Evans himself picked up an injury in last week’s Champions League defeat in Copenhagen but Varane was still left on the sidelines for the weekend win against Luton.

Victor Lindelof started, and scored the winner next to Harry Maguire, keeping a clean sheet in the process.

Having called time on playing for his country, the upcoming international break will give Varane the chance to get back to full fitness and impress the manager on the training pitch, in time for the resumption of the Premier League at the end of the month.

Manchester United’s unprecedented injury jinx is showing no sign of abating with the club revealing centre back Jonny Evans will be out for several weeks after sustaining an injury against FC Copenhagen on Wednesday.

Evans, whose fine form has been keeping Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane out of the side, limped off after 15 minutes of the Champions League clash with what looked like a hamstring problem.

The club announced on its official website that “The Northern Ireland defender suffered a thigh strain in the first half of our Champions League game with FC Copenhagen in Denmark on Wednesday.”

With Erik ten Hag having already confirmed that Lisandro Martinez will be out until Christmas after a second operation on his troublesome ankle and Luke Shaw still some time away from a return to action, the Red Devils are now down to three fit centre backs – Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof.

At yesterday’s press conference, Ten Hag admitted that “the build-up is not that fluid when one of them [Maguire or Varane] is playing from the left centre-half position. Licha obviously, Luke Shaw, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof are right footed but they can play really comfortably from the left and they can make the right angles.”

This suggests that Lindelof will be playing left centre back in Evans’ place and it will come down to a choice between Maguire and Varane as to who partners him.

For Evans, if the “thigh strain” is indeed a hamstring injury, it will be the latest of several sustained by United players this season, with Casemiro and Aaron Wan-Bissaka among others to have missed chunks of the season.

It will also replicate the injury that Evans sustained for Leicester City in 2021/22 that kept him out of action for 109 days (source: transfermarkt.com).

Evans also missed a big chunk of last season with the Foxes after problems with his calf which ruled him out for 30 matches.

This susceptibility to injury is believed to be one of the reasons he was released by the relegated side, allowing him to become a free agent.

For United, the wisdom of bringing in players with bad injury track records such as Evans and loanee Sergio Reguilon, who also missed 29 games last season, is questionable, especially when they were drafted in to bolster an already injury-ravaged defence.

United now have seven unavailable first team stars, with Tyrell Malacia and Amad Diallo also currently out of action in addition to Evans, Casemiro, Martinez and Shaw, and Jadon Sancho still exiled from the team after a bust-up with the manager.

]]>

Erik ten Hag’s relationship with one of his key players at Manchester United – Raphael Varane – has reportedly deteriorated and is now damaged.

This is because of Varane’s continued exclusion from the starting XI in favour of a centre-back partnership of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans despite the four-time Champions League winner being fully fit.

In yet another game against FC Copenhagen, Ten Hag gave the nod to Maguire and Evans, with Varane having to be content with a place on the bench.

It followed the third match in a row that Varane was not used from the start since Ten Hag told reporters during the defeat at the hands of Manchester City that the French defender did not start due to “tactical reasons.”

An unfortunate Evans injury just 15 minutes into proceedings at Parken forced Ten Hag’s hand and he was forced to thrust Varane into action, alongside Maguire.

As the World Cup winner was coming on, the cameras spotted him looking extremely glum. He and Ten Hag seemed very frosty with each other at the touchline.

Last season, Varane was a crucial player for United and alongside Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez, the three formed a solid spine that was the backbone for much of the team’s success during Ten Hag’s maiden season in England.

However, this campaign has been a different story and according to The Telegraph, there are fractions in the relationship between Ten Hag and Varane.

“Ten Hag could regularly be heard praising Varane’s leadership and mentality last season but their relationship is understood to have become strained in recent weeks, even if the Dutchman denied on Friday that there was any underlying issue with the player.”

“Nonetheless, it is thought that Ten Hag and Varane had a discussion in the wake of United’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City a fortnight ago when the manager claimed he had been dropped for “tactical” reasons at a time when the defender was said to still be wrestling with a fitness issue.”

James Ducker adds, “Either way, Varane has fallen out of favour – the extent to which may become more apparent against Luton.”

During his presser ahead of the Luton Town game at Old Trafford on Saturday, Ten Hag vehemently denied that there are problems between him and Varane.

The Dutch coach insisted that the 30-year-old’s peculiar exclusion from the starting XI is down to the need to foster balance at the back.

With Evans ruled out of action, all eyes will be on Ten Hag to see which defensive combination he opts for against Luton.

Manchester United’s Champions League journey was left hanging by a thread after a dramatic defeat to Danish league leaders, Copenhagen, last night.

In a game wrapped in controversy, United eventually succumbed to a 4-3 defeat at the Parkden Stadium.

As reported by The Daily Mail, an injury to Jonny Evans also added to Erik ten Hag’s headaches as his defensive injury crisis worsens once more.

Raphael Varane’s return from injury is a timely one with the Frenchman replacing Evans and now looking set for a run in the first team.

United haven’t been able to name a settled back four at any point this season, no doubt playing a huge role in their worrying form.

Evans limped off in the 16th minute of last night’s game with a suspected hamstring injury and faces a period on the sidelines.

Playing in his first Champions League game in a decade, the centre-back pulled up early on after starting his fourth game in six.

Perhaps more worrying for Ten Hag is the amount of hamstring injuries United are suffering this season.

Casemiro has been ruled out until the New Year after pulling up in Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle last week and Aaron Wan-Bissaka has just returned to the team from a hamstring injury picked up in the early weeks of the season.

With recurring injuries, there may be a tweak in training methods that could lower the risk of the suffering any more, with United’s squad spread thin.

United’s defeat last night has left them bottom of Group A and needing maximum points in their final two fixtures to stand any chance to qualify for the knockout phase.

However, the two games are made up of a trip to Turkey to face Galatasaray before ending the group against tournament favourites, Bayern Munich.

Numerous eyebrows were raised when it was announced that former defender, Jonny Evans, was returning to Manchester United to bolster the defensive department.

The Northern Irishman was a free agent after leaving Leicester City in the summer of 2023. The defender had an injury-ravaged 2022-2023 campaign and he disclosed in a recent interview with The Mirror that he was seriously contemplating retirement before he received the call from Erik ten Hag.

Many fans were astounded when they heard the news that the defender was training with the squad before pre-season to fill out the numbers for Ten Hag’s pre-season squad. The Northern Ireland international originally trained with the under-21s in their tour of America this summer and played in the defeat to Wrexham

Most fans assumed that this was some mutually beneficial agreement between the club and the player. Evans could train at a high level and get himself up to full fitness to secure a contract in the Championship and Manchester United got defensive cover and an experienced voice to help with the young players.

The arrangement was going well as the Dutch coach was full of praise for the defender and told the club’s official website that Evans is “a big personality, and I think he has big authority as well. He will help the young players especially.” It also mustn’t be forgotten that Evans enjoyed a trophy-laden time at the club between 2006-2015, playing 198 times and scoring 7 goals. He boasts a trophy cabinet many of the current United squad would kill for. Nonetheless, most assumed the short term deal would be over before the Premier League kick-off.

However, as the summer wore on, there was no defensive recruitment, Harry Maguire didn’t leave and Jonny Evans kept training at the club. The Red Devils were linked to numerous defenders such as Benjamin Pavard and Jean-Clair Todibo, however no move materialised. It always seemed such a move hinged on the sale of Maguire, which obviously never transpired.

So, the Northern Ireland international was the only centre-back recruit of the summer window. Many fans were critical and claimed it was yet another example of the Glazer family’s penny-pinching and lack of desire to back the manager in the market. Although, the defender was mainly brought in to add experience and cover. The defender himself must be taken aback by the amount of gametime he has received since rejoining the club where it all began.

The team from Old Trafford has faced a defensive crisis with all defenders in the squad missing crucial matches at some point this season due to injury or illness. Lisandro Martinez has been a long term absentee and Raphael Varane has had on and off knocks and fitness issues. Due to the scarcely believable simultaneous injuries to left-backs Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Sergio Reguilon, centre-back, Victor Lindelof, has been asked to deputise as a full-back.

Consequently, Evans and Maguire have been tasked to hold the defence together. This has had mixed results to say the least but also, it has probably gone better than expected. If you had told Man United fans at the start of the season that the Englishman and the Northern Irish man would be playing together regularly, it would have struck fear into their hearts. However, most would say whilst the arrangement is not perfect, it is far from the club’s most pressing issue.

Understandably for a player who is 35 years-old and in the twilight of his career, Evans suffered when asked to play against Arsenal and Manchester City. The defender on a couple of instances looked well-off the pace. Arguably Declan Rice’s crucial second goal at the Emirates Stadium was down to Evans’ slow reactions. However, to the defender’s credit, he has played quite well and been solid when asked to deal with mid-table and lower league attackers.

The Northern Irish international was outstanding against Burnley and not only in a defensive role. The Ulsterman scored a goal that was agonisingly ruled out for interference by Rasmus Houjlund and produced a Pirlo-esque wonder pass for Bruno Fernandes to volley in.

The performance was so commanding that Sky Sports pundit, and former teammate of Evans, Gary Neville, commented “I thought this would finish him” – that he felt the Burnley game would be a career ending game for the defender, where he would be brutally exposed at Premier League level. The former captain admitted his error and recognised the quality of the performance from the man from Belfast.

Nobody would sensibly argue that Evans is any more than defensive cover and if he hadn’t been a former player, he probably wouldn’t have been handed the opportunity to play at this level. However, the defender has been constantly praised throughout his career for his professionalism and leadership skills. Therefore, credit where credit is due that at the ripe old age of 35 instead of retiring, Jonny Evans remains an important player for not only United but also his country.

Manchester United travelled to Craven Cottage to take on Marco Silva’s Fulham after their disappointing Carabao Cup elimination at the hands of Newcastle on Wednesday.

Heading into the game, pressure was mounting on Erik ten Hag and his players to get back to winning ways after a number of poor results.

Ten Hag started Andre Onana in goal, with a defensive four of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Diogo Dalot ahead of the Cameroonian.

In midfield, Christian Eriksen started as United’s deepest-lying man with Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay alongside him in the middle of the park.

Rasmus Hojlund led the line with Antony and Alejandro Garnacho on either side. Here are three things we learned from Manchester United’s 1 – 0 win against Fulham.

Raphael Varane’s peculiar exclusion

In yet another game, Varane was left out.

Amidst suggestions of rifts in the background and dressing room unrest, it was reported that Varane is one of the players who may be unhappy with Ten Hag.

It was relayed that the Frenchman was not amused by the manager’s decision to leave him out of the game against Manchester City in favour of Evans and Maguire due to “tactical reasons.”

Varane did not feature vs. Newcastle in the Carabao Cup. United claimed that he was ill and that was the sole reason for his absence.

Conflicting reports relayed that the World Cup winner did not train and was not satisfied with his ongoing situation with respect to lack of game time despite being fit.

It was therefore surprising when the team sheet came out for the Fulham game and Varane was on the bench again.

It’s puzzling that Ten Hag gave the nod to Maguire and Evans once more despite Varane’s presence.

On more than one occasion across the 90 minutes, Maguire had to come off for treatment but even then, Ten Hag did not opt for Varane.

Not to say that Maguire and Evans have done anything particularly wrong when they’ve started together but few will disagree that Varane offers much more and is easily the better defender when in top shape and injury-free.

Varane only came on int the dying embers of the game for Garnacho, to ensure United got over the line.

United struggling to create enough clear-cut goalscoring opportunities

A noticeable theme of the game was just how much the Red Devils struggled to fashion enough goalscoring chances.

With the exception of McTominay’s disallowed goal in the opening 45 minutes, United barely created anything for the rest of the half – something that extended into the second period.

Most of United’s chances came about through trying long-distance efforts that frankly, didn’t trouble Bernd Leno who was mostly comfortable throughout the game.

Ten Hag’s men had a lot of possession but it’s disappointing they could not do much with the ball up until Fernandes grabbed the late winner.

United had Eriksen and Fernandes on the pitch, arguably two of the Premier League’s most creative midfielders but even then, chances were far between each other.

As has usually been the case, Hojlund cut a very frustrated and lonely figure up front. The Dane did not have much to pounce on.

He was visibly angry when substituted.

During the game, the away fans could be heard chanting “attack attack attack” in an apparent effort to get the players to speed things up.

United’s forwards have struggled to put the ball into the back of the net this term and while this has been down to poor finishing, another primary reason is that they’ve not been presented with enough opportunities to score.

This is something Ten Hag will undoubtedly be keen to sort out if he is to be successful in retaining his job as manager of the 20-time English champions.

Antony extremely poor again

Antony was easily United’s poorest performer against Fulham.

The Brazilian contributed next to nothing when he was on and it was hardly a shock that he was the first to be taken just minutes after the hour mark.

It has usually been said that Ten Hag’s continued selection of Antony and his favouritism for the player is one of the players’ major gripes with the Dutchman.

Consistently this season, Antony has failed to justify his inclusion in the starting XI and already, he appears to be another player United have wasted big money on.

Even Facundo Pellistri who only played a few minutes managed to do more than Antony did. The Uruguayan registered an assist for Fernandes’ goal.

It’s telling that when the 23-year-old came off, United fans cheered in response to the change made by Ten Hag.

If United are to be a successful team going forward, they can no longer rely on Antony – clearly a very limited and one-dimensional player not suited to playing at this level.
