Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka has admitted that former Crystal Palace teammate Wilfried Zaha played a big part in helping him become a defensive monster.

Wan-Bissaka has his critics but one thing almost everyone can agree on is that he is almost second to none in one-vs-one scenarios.

The United star came on as a second half substitute during his side’s 3-0 win against Everton on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag preferred to name Diogo Dalot in the starting XI ahead of Wan-Bissaka.

The Englishman will certainly be hoping to get the nod when the Red Devils take on Galatasaray on Wednesday in a must-win Champions League affair in Istanbul.

Wan-Bissaka may possibly see himself come up against the tricky Zaha who moved to Galatasaray from Palace during the summer transfer window.

Ahead of the clash, Wan-Bissaka spoke to club media and said, “We’re still in contact. When I saw the draw, I thought about it. I’m happy for him to go out there and he’s playing well for them now. I think he’s enjoying it.”

“He’ll just be looking forward to the competition in that different league and also in the Champions League. You know, even from when I was training with him at Palace, I respected him a lot. That was the battle we had. That helped me as a player as well.”

“You just never know with him, on what day, and you have just got to be prepared.”

The 26-year-old added, “Obviously, you just play your own game and, all that comes, you deal with it then.”

Wan-Bissaka’s solidity and defensive prowess could certainly come in hand against Zaha’s skills and quick feet.

During the first leg match at Old Trafford, Dalot struggled to contain Zaha who got on the score sheet.

The Ivorian of course had a stint at United between 2013 and 2015. He made only four appearances for the 20-time English champions before moving back to Selhurst Park, from where Sir Alex Ferguson signed him.

Zaha was Sir Alex’s last recruit before the legendary Scot retired.

DR Congo have reportedly made an official approach to Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka to represent the country during the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

The competition is set to take place in Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11.

Already, United are preparing to see out a run of games within that period without the services of goalkeeper Andre Onana and loan signing Sofyan Amrabat, who play for Cameroon and Morocco respectively.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein reports that Erik ten Hag may also be forced to do without Wan-Bissaka after DR Congo’s latest move.

“Aaron Wan-Bissaka has received an approach to represent DR Congo at the Africa Cup of Nations next year.”

“The Manchester United defender has yet to make a decision but is considering the opportunity, which would involve a switch of international allegiance.”

The reliable Ornstein adds, “There also remains uncertainty about Wan-Bissaka’s future at Old Trafford. His contract expires at the end of this season, although United retain an option to extend by 12 months.”

Wan-Bissaka was born in England but is eligible to play for DR Congo by way of his Congolese descent.

The 25-year-old right-back made one appearance for the African country’s Under-20 side in 2015.

Wan-Bissaka is yet to feature for the England senior team, although he featured for the Three Lions at the Under-20 and Under-21 levels.

Back in September 2019 ahead of the 2020 Euros, the United star received a call-up from Southgate.

He however had to pull out of the squad and return to Carrington due to a back injury. He has not managed to force his way into Southgate’s set-up since.

With Manchester United not performing as expected due to the numerous injuries all across the pitch, countless problem areas are also emerging which manager Erik ten Hag will need to solve going forward.

The underwhelming performance of big-name players like Raphael Varane and Casemiro have highlighted the need to strengthen at the back and in the middle of the park.

At right-back, United have seen Aaron Wan-Bissaka miss a fair amount of games this season while Diogo Dalot has struggled to hit top gear.

United lack an elite RB

The right full-back berth has given Ten Hag plenty to ponder about since his arrival with both stars not quite up to the standard required to succeed.

The Portuguese earned a new five-year contract extension last season but he tends to switch off while defending. The former Crystal Palace star is far more secure when it comes to the defensive aspect but is not as comfortable going forward.

The former Eagles man has improved a lot but his United deal ends next summer and while initially there were plans to offer him a new long-term deal, the club currently seem to want to trigger the automatic one-year extension option instead.

At one point, lots of names were linked with a move to Old Trafford with Galatasaray star Sacha Boey one among them. The Frenchman impressed at the Theatre of Dreams when both teams faced off in the Champions League.

The 23-year-old, whose contract with the Turkish giants ends in 2025, was offered a new deal by the club but he seems to be backtracking after initially liking the offer.

As per Turkish outlet Aksam, the full-back wants to move to the Premier League with United, Arsenal and Brighton among clubs monitoring his displays.

Sacha Boey wants PL move

“The management proposed a new contract in order to sell Boey, whose value is increasing day by day, for higher prices. A four-year deal worth 1.5 million euros per year and an additional 1 million euro signing fee for each season. At first, the player’s manager responded positively to the offer.

“At the last moment, Sacha Boey did not agree to the new contract, stating that he had the English Premier League on his mind. The expectation for the French right-back, who has serious interest from clubs such as Manchester United, Arsenal and Brighton with the clubs watching his matches live, is at least 20 million euros.”

The report states that his future depends on Gala’s Champions League campaign with the Turkish side looking the likelier to make it out of Group A at United’s expense.

Most likely a move will occur next summer and not in winter. United will need to take a call on Dalot and Wan-Bissaka’s future first before incomings can be expected.

No Man United fans likes an international break, but this one is a blessing in disguise as time is desperately needed to get some injured warriors back on the pitch.

Going into the break, the Red Devils’ injury list looked more like a team sheet missing only a goalkeeper, with 10 outfield players unavailable for selection.

However, by the time United kick off against Everton in their next match on November 26th, there is a chance that some of those names will be available for selection again.

This is, as we understand it, the likely return order for the walking wounded.

Everton, 26th November

Aaron Wan-Bissaka missed the Luton game with illness and so should be back.

Amad Diallo could be available. He was last spotted around a week ago in individual training on the grass, which should put team training around now, and full fitness potentially in time for Everton. However, match fitness is another issue and while he could find himself on the bench at Goodison, he is more likely to be eased in with a guest appearance in the U18’s match at Southampton the day before.

Galatasaray, 29th November

Rasmus Hojlund’s thigh strain is thought to be mild and a November return has been mooted. It’s a race against time for the Gala game, with Everton likely to be too soon.

Newcastle United, 2nd December

Tyrell Malacia could just pip Luke Shaw to win the race of the recovering left backs and be available for this one as he returns after summer surgery.

Chelsea, 6th December

Luke Shaw’s return has been touted for the end of November but to our knowledge, there have been no sightings of him back in training yet. This puts him at least 2 weeks away and we think the Chelsea match is realistically the first real chance for the England man.

Liverpool, 17th December

Jonny Evans – a club statement on 10th November said Evans will be out for “a few weeks” with a thigh strain, so this could mean a mid-December return.

Christian Eriksen – on November 13th we were told Eriksen’s knee injury would keep him out for around a month, so a return against Liverpool also looks possible at this stage for the Dane.

Nottingham Forest, 30th December or FA Cup 3rd round, 7th January

Ten Hag has said that Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez, United’s two longest term injuries, will not be back before Christmas. The turn of the year will hopefully see them back on the pitch.

Permanently out

Jadon Sancho is not injured but exiled following a row with Ten Hag and is expected to be sold or loaned out in January. Unless there is a major rapprochement, he is highly unlikely to play again for the club.

West Ham have reportedly identified Manchester United star Aaron Wan-Bissaka as their number one target to solve their issues at right-back.

During the summer transfer window, West Ham expressed interest in Wan-Bissaka.

However, a move to the London Stadium never materialized and the Englishman ended up staying at United.

He suffered an injury on 16 September during United’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of Brighton. Wan-Bissaka recently made his return to action and played the full 90 minutes against Fulham and FC Copenhagen.

He missed the Luton Town game due to illness, prompting Erik ten Hag to start Diogo Dalot in his place.

Football Transfers report that West Ham are keen on landing Wan-Bissaka as early as January and the United star is not entirely opposed to leaving Old Trafford if he were to be made available for sale.

There is uncertainty surrounding Vladimir Coufals’s future with David Moyes’ side.

The Hammers are not keen on handing Coufal a contract extension to extend his stay at the club.

Negotiations with Ben Johnson, West Ham’s other right-back, have hit a major snag. Johnson’s representatives and the London outfit remain some way apart in agreeing terms of a new deal.

Johnson is unhappy with what has been put on the table and is seriously considering leaving West Ham in search of greener pastures.

Football Transfers state, “We are told that a January move for Wan-Bissaka could be on the cards despite interest from his former club, Crystal Palace.”

“It is thought that a move to West Ham is a more enticing prospect for Wan Bissaka than a return to the Eagles, where he spent three seasons.”

“West Ham are also actively pursuing Wolves’ Nelson Semedo as a potential replacement for Coufal.”

Many Manchester United fans will be dreaming of a busy winter window that will kick-start their season domestically and abroad.

However, the major stories from transfer windows are not always about who your clubs brings in, but also on who they decide to cut ties with.

Man United have seven players who have contracts ending in June 2024 and face an uncertain future beyond the end of the current campaign.

The Mirror has drawn attention to the players that could be moving on to new pastures in the summer. One rule of the transfer window is that “any player looking to move from one English team to another as a free agent can only open talks after entering the final month of their previous contract”. However, they can negotiate with foreign clubs from the January previous to the expiry date of their deal.

Safe in this knowledge, let’s take a look to see which of the seven Red Devils may opt for this route.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

The Mirror are downbeat on Wan-Bissaka’s chances of staying at the club. They sum him up as a player who has “veered from dependable player to a lightning rod for fan criticism”. The publication believes it is unlikely he will be offered a new deal. At the start of the season the English fullback seemed a shoe-in for a new contract but things on that front have certainly cooled down of late.

Consequently, The Peoples Person has reported that Ten Hag is interested in bringing in his own right back but many would argue that Wan-Bissaka may provide more effective backup than Diogo Dalot. Additionally, Wan-Bissaka would most certainly be of interest to English teams such as West Ham, so it is improbable that he would lack attractive offers from mid table Premier League clubs if United decide not to renew his deal. Unlikely to go.

Victor Lindelof

The Swede is another name that could depart the club in the summer. The Swedish captain has had plenty of admirers from abroad such as Atletico Madrid, so if he were to desire a new challenge, he would have numerous options as a free agent. However, Lindelof has already played 15 times for the club this season due to the defensive injury crisis and even scored the winning goal against Luton. Nonetheless, Victor may fall down the pecking order as United have been linked to many new central defenders including Jean-Clair Todibo, so the Swedish defender may choose this path, as he is certainly the most sought after of the seven. Likely to go abroad

Antony Martial

The French forward is probably a much clearer case. While Wan-Bissaka and Lindelof remain relatively popular players where you could envision a future back-up role at the club, Martial does not enjoy this reputation among supporters. The Frenchman has been heavily critiqued and has seemingly lost largely everything that made him winner of the Golden Boy award in 2015. Not many English clubs would be willing to sign the attacker but as long as he asked for sensible wages, a list of European clubs would most likely be attracted to him. The Peoples Person recently stated that Inter Milan and PSG are among such teams. Likely to go abroad

Hannibal Mejbri

The 20 year old Tunisian Mejbri is enjoying something of a breakthrough year, having played 5 times already for the Red Devils in this campaign and also having scored a wonder goal against Brighton in September. United do have an option to extend for a year and it is hard to see them not at least taking up this option. The Tunisian is hot-tempered and still has much to learn but it is unlikely that club or player are willing to give up on each other yet. Unlikely to go just yet

Jonny Evans

The Northern Irishman was a surprise signing during the summer but like Lindelof, has had to fill in more than he had probably anticipated due to the injury-ravaged defensive department. Despite admirably deputising, future summer signings at centre back, again like Lindelof, will most likely see Evans leave the club. He could decide to retire as he had contemplated before joining United or play for a lower division English team. Likely to go, but not abroad

Tom Heaton

The 37 year old keeper saw the arrival of two new keepers in the summer and has not played yet this season. The United academy graduate almost joined Luton Town in August but this deal collapsed. Heaton will most definitely leave unless offered some sort of coaching job, but again, he is unlikely to try and secure a deal abroad at this point in his career. Likely to go but not abroad

Alvaro Fernandez

The young Spanish left back will probably have developed the taste for first team football. Last season he played 42 times for Preston in the Championship and has been a regular for Granada in La Liga this year. He is highly rated at United and it is likely the club would love to tie him down to a new contract. However, with Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and possibly even Sergio Reguilon potentially in front of him, he may not have the patience to wait for his chance. Especially as the youngster is from Spain, he could well try and pursue a move to his homeland or elsewhere in the winter. Likely to go abroad

Manchester United suffered a devastating 4-3 defeat at the hands of FC Copenhagen in their fourth clash of Group A in the Champions League.

A Rasmus Hojlund brace and a converted penalty from Bruno Fernandes were not enough to sink Copenhagen at Parken.

United managed 48% possession to the opposition’s 52% share of the ball.

Erik ten Hag’s men had a total of 9 shots, with eight of these being on target. In comparison, Copenhagen amassed 16 shots with half of these requiring Andre Onana to swing into action.

United put together 497 passes with a success rate of 84%.

Copenhagen strung 517 passes with a pass accuracy of 88%.

One of the Red Devils’ better performers during a disappointing night at Parken was Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The Englishman made three important clearances during the time he was on the pitch.

Wan-Bissaka also registered four interceptions and came up with three tackles. He was not dribbled past even on one occasion.

The 25-year-old delved into seven ground duels and came out on top an impressive five times. Wan-Bissaka was required to contest two challenges in the air. He won one of these aerial duels.

The right-back lost possession of the ball 12 times and was fouled once. He had 83 touches of the ball to his name.

Wan-Bissaka successfully delivered 50 of the 56 passes he attempted, managing a personal pass accuracy of 89% to his name.

The defender made one key pass. He did not find his teammates with any of his crosses or long balls – an aspect of the game he will undoubtedly be keen to improve.

Wan-Bissaka embarked on one dribble which he completed.

(Stats obtained from Sofascore)

As a result of their defeat, United now have an uphill battle to make it out of the group ahead of crucial clashes vs. Galatasaray and Bayern Munich.

Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka has revealed just how hard he had to work to recover ahead of schedule and make his return to competitive action.

Wan-Bissaka suffered an injury back on September 16 during a 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford to Brighton.

After a spell on the sidelines, he made his comeback on Wednesday as United were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle in a 3-0 loss.

He was brought on at the interval in place of Diogo Dalot, who was partly culpable for Newcastle’s opener when he failed to mark the run of Miguel Almiron, who ran through on goal before easily beating Andre Onana.

Wan-Bissaka didn’t do anything special but after weeks of being out of competitive action, he looked relatively sharp.

He told club media, “Things were going in the right direction. I’d had pre-season and was looking forward to getting the games under my belt. I’d been playing, so it was unfortunate to pick up an injury at that particular time.”

“I was happy with how I started the season but it’s not just about me, it’s the team. I couldn’t have done it without the team helping me and helping the team. I always just aim to keep going and keep pushing. I was working hard, getting my head down and trying to get back quicker than expected.”

“I don’t find it easy, watching rather than playing. I hate it because I just miss being out there. You know, even when I come into training and doing the rehab, just seeing the boys getting ready for training. At that point, it hits me but I had to keep pushing to get back fit.”

He narrated just how helpful the club’s support staff were in helping him get back to top shape.

Wan-Bissaka noted that going forward, Erik ten Hag made it clear that he wants more from the defender, even as the club tries to get out of their current predicament and get back to winning ways.

The Englishman stated about Ten Hag, “He’s happy with me, with all the development that I’ve had since he came in, so the aim is just to keep going and keep improving.”

Up next for the struggling Red Devils is a trip to Craven Cottage on Saturday to take on Fulham before flying to Denmark to clash against FC Copenhagen on Wednesday.

Manchester United looked to continue their defence of the Carabao Cup by beating Eddie Howe’s Newcastle at Old Trafford.

Fresh off the back of an embarrassing defeat against Manchester City on Sunday, no doubt Erik ten Hag would have been keen to get his side back to winning ways and in the process, relieve some mounting pressure.

Ten Hag started Andre Onana in goal. In defence, the United boss gave the nod to Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Sergio Reguilon.

Casemiro returned back into the starting XI and slotted next to Hannibal Mejbri and Mason Mount in midfield.

Anthony Martial led the line with Alejandro Garnacho and Antony on either side of the Frenchman. Here are three things we learned from Manchester United’s 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat against Newcastle.

United are extremely poor defensively

The Red Devils demonstrated some control in the early stages of the work but as has been the norm this season, they could only sustain pressure and possession of the ball for roughly 20 minutes before the opposition grew into the game.

Newcastle took some time to get going but when they did, Ten Hag’s men barely had a sniff and primarily played second fiddle.

The Magpies created the most chances and got their reward in the 28th minute when Livramento easily cut through the midfield.

The Newcastle right-back powered through the middle of the park and effortlessly shook off Mount and Hannibal, who were left in his wake.

Livramento then passed the ball to Almiron. Dalot looked to be tracking the Newcastle sub, but the Portuguese defender lost his man who then went through on goal before putting the ball into the back of the net, beyond the reach of Onana.

It was a streak of costly defensive blunders from United which saw Newcastle take the lead.

For the second, Dalot was tricked inside his own box by a rival player who used his pace and tricky feet to bypass the United man.

Ten Hag’s players failed in their objective to clear the ball which landed on the feet of Lewis Hall just outside the box. Hall fired a shot which Onana could not keep out, to give Newcastle a two-goal lead heading into the break.

Newcastle’s third of the match came about as a result of Sofyan Amrabat being harried and dispossessed of the ball.

Willock then let loose a shot into the bottom-right corner to all but seal the win for his side and add to United’s woes.

This term, United have been made to suffer dearly for their laxity and defensive mistakes. These errors were harshly punished by the Toon who were ruthless in their execution.

It’s worrying how easily United are cut open and the number of chances they concede during games. There is simply no cohesion on the pitch and it’s hardly surprising that the backline often finds itself exposed.

Ten Hag has recently been speaking about the need to be pragmatic and direct but such a brand of football requires the team to be defensively compact and solid.

As the Dutchman seeks to stem the bleeding and get his side back to getting results, the defensive structure is an aspect of the game that will need to be addressed urgently.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka barely has a fight on his hands for a starting berth

Wan-Bissaka was the surprise inclusion in the United matchday squad.

The Englishman has not featured for the 20-time English champions since the loss vs. Brighton on September 16.

He returned to training just days ago and it seems he was given a clean bill of health to participate if needed against Newcastle.

Dalot had a nightmare during the 45 minutes he was on the pitch and if there were any doubts about whether Wan-Bissaka’s starting status should be immediately restored, these concerns were put to bed.

In Wan-Bissaka’s absence, Dalot has been decent and has done a relatively good job but against Newcastle, he proved that Wan-Bissaka does not need to do much to be above him in the pecking order.

United in shambles

United have now lost eight of their 15 games across all competitions.

After the City game, questions started being asked of Ten Hag’s tenure in the Old Trafford dugout and just how safe his job really is as the club continues to struggle.

A report covered by The Peoples Person indicated that the board and power brokers within United are still backing the 53-year-old coach.

However, one gets the feeling that he is no longer as bulletproof as he once was – the pitchforks are certainly coming out.

Both at half-time and the final whistle, there were audible boos from the crowd who were clearly exasperated by what they saw.

It did not help that the travelling Newcastle supporters incessantly kept singing “You’re getting sacked in the morning,” in reference to the extreme pressure that is mounting on Ten Hag and his staff.

Amidst rumours of unrest in the dressing room and players not really taking to Ten Hag’s methods, it’s not looking good for the former Ajax manager.

The players look completely short of confidence and lack any drive or desire to do even the most basic things.

The situation on the pitch is just as bad off it, what with the imminent partial investment of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the uncertainty that his overhaul of sporting operations could bring.

United are undoubtedly a club in turmoil and an end to the misfortunes does not seem to be near.

Manchester United have seemingly cooled down talks over a new contract for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Wan-Bissaka recently returned to training after sustaining an injury during United’s game against Brighton on September 16.

This season, United have struggled with multiple physical setbacks to key members of their backline. Alongside Wan-Bissaka, Erik ten Hag has had to contend with the absences of Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez.

The likes of Raphael Varane and Sergio Reguilon have also been in and out of the team.

It’s expected that Wan-Bissaka will not be rushed back into competitive action as the club are keen not to aggravate his injury.

Early last month, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that United were set to initiate talks over fresh terms for the Englishman.

Romano explained that Wan-Bissaka had convinced Ten Hag that he can contribute to his project and at the moment, the player is considered a key member of the team.

The Daily Mail have given an update and relayed that negotiations between United and the player’s representatives are no longer moving as fast as they once were.

“Contract talks between United and Aaron Wan-Bissaka appear to have gone quiet.”

“Negotiations over a new deal looked to be heading for a positive conclusion once the transfer window closed in the summer, but Confidential understands it now seems more likely that United will trigger a 12-month extension to keep Wan-Bissaka under contract until June 2025 and look at his situation again in the New Year.”

“If United didn’t activate the one-year contract extension for Wan-Bissaka – or Victor Lindelof – both players would be able to speak to foreign clubs on January 1 and leave as free agents in the summer.”

Another play in the same position as Wan-Bissaka and Lindelof is Anthony Martial. The Mail however states that the French striker is unlikely to be offered a new deal to extend his tenure at Old Trafford.
